Effect

Generation IV-VII

When used in tall grass, caves, or while surfing, Honey triggers a wild Pokémon battle (like Sweet Scent as a field move). In Generation VI, this will trigger a Horde Encounter if they are present in the area; however, in Pokémon X and Y, it cannot cause a wild encounter if the overworld weather is not clear.

In Sinnoh, Honey can be slathered on Honey Trees in order to attract wild Pokémon.

Oddities

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl only, using Honey (or Sweet Scent) inside a shop or Poké Mart will cause the descriptive text of purchasable items to vanish until the player opens the "SELL" menu or leaves the shop. This is known as the Poké Mart text glitch.

Generation VIII onward

In Pokémon Sword and Shield and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Honey serves no practical purpose other than to be sold.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Honey can again be used to trigger a wild Pokémon battle in tall grass or caves, and can be slathered on Honey Trees in order to attract wild Pokémon.

Though unavailable as an item in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Honey is mentioned as being a food produced by the Beedrill and Combee of Nectar Meadow, overseen by their queen and manager Vespiquen. Due to its nutritious properties, Budew heads to Nectar Meadow to obtain some Honey for her ailing mother, despite being warned that the Pokémon are usually on edge during their Honey-making season. Misunderstood as a Honey thief, Budew is rescued in time by the player and partner from the angry Beedrill and Combee. After they are defeated, Vespiquen intervenes and resolves the misunderstanding, and gifts Budew with some Honey.

Pokémon the Series

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

In Some Enchanted Sweetening!, Honey was slathered on a tree, attracting several wild Bug-type and Grass-type Pokémon as well Ash's Aipom and Cheryl's Burmy. The Honey appeared to have been slathered by Cheryl, who wanted to catch a male Burmy to help her find the Enchanted Honey. Cheryl later explained to the group that Enchanted Honey was Honey gathered by Combee in the Amber Castle, located deep in Eterna Forest, which is said to be hundreds of times sweeter than normal Honey. With the help of Ash and his friends, and with her Mothim leading the way, she located the hive of a Vespiquen and its many worker Combee. After helping defend the hive from Team Rocket, the Vespiquen shared some of its Enchanted Honey with Cheryl, Ash, his friends, and some of their Pokémon. All of them loved the Enchanted Honey, except for Brock's Croagunk, who looked disgusted by the sweet flavor.

In A Trainer and Child Reunion!, Honey was used by Team Rocket in an attempt to catch Aaron's Vespiquen. It instead attracted a Munchlax.

In Strategy Begins at Home!, Honey was planted on a tree by a young boy named Nathaniel, which attracted a Heracross.

In a flashback in Historical Mystery Tour!, it was revealed that Barry used Honey to attract his Heracross. He repeated this same scenario in an illusionary adventure that a Clown sent him to.

Pokémon Adventures

Diamond & Pearl arc

In Honey for Combee, as Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum ventured into Floaroma Meadow, Diamond and his Pokémon smelled Honey and ran off to lick it off a tree, only to be attacked by a swarm of angry Combee, whom the Honey had been meant for. Later, the trio ventured into the Valley Windworks, where they met Mars, who filled the Windworks control room with sand in order to do away with them. Pearl and Platinum ended up outside the building and were able to uncover Diamond's location inside the building and save him thanks to a group of Combee being attracted by the scent of Honey on Diamond and his Pokémon.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!

In Find Munchlax!!, a Collector used Honey in an attempt to lure out a Munchlax. However, the Honey instead ended up being eaten away by Hareta.

In the TCG

Sweet Honey in the TCG
Main article: Sweet Honey (Astral Radiance 153)

Sweet Honey was introduced as an Item card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Sword & Shield Series (the Japanese Sword & Shield Era). It was first released in the Japanese Battle Region subset and the English Astral Radiance expansion, with artwork by ORBITALLINK Inc. It allows the player to choose one of their Pokémon, flip a coin until they get tails, and heal 40 damage from that Pokémon for each heads.

Additionally, Honey is held by Combee from Stormfront. It allows the player to search their discard pile for a Basic Pokémon and put it onto their Bench when Combee is moved from their hand onto their Bench.
