1972 Volvo 1800E 4-Speed
This 1972 Volvo 1800E was initially sold by Annex Motors in California to Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, shortly before his passing in 1972. The car was refurbished in 2013 with an overhaul of the 2.0-liter inline-four and a repaint in green. It was acquired by the seller in 2022, and subsequent work included servicing the four-speed manual transmission, replacing the overdrive unit, refreshing the black interior, and replacing the spark plugs and throttle position sensor. The car is also equipped with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, an Isky camshaft, an IPD exhaust, Bilstein and KYB dampers, and 15″ Minilite-style wheels in addition to chrome trim, front and rear disc brakes, front bucket seats, and a retro-style head unit. This 1800E is now offered in Texas with the owner’s manual, service records, and a clean Indiana title in the seller’s name.
The car was refinished in Dark Green following rust repairs in 2013, and the seller reports that a paint correction was performed and a ceramic coating applied in 2025. The bumpers were re-chromed, and other exterior trim pieces were refreshed or replaced.
VTO Minilite-style 15″ wheels are mounted with 195/65 Grand Prix Tour RS tires. Bilstein and KYB shocks are fitted, and the car has four-wheel disc brakes.
The front bucket seats were refreshed in 2025 with replacement black leather upholstery and are joined by a rear bench trimmed in black vinyl. Additional features include a padded dashboard, a rear parcel shelf, a retro-style head unit, and a heated rear window. The clock does not work, and the seller tells us that the heater blows warm but not hot. The rear seatbelt mounts are not installed.
The three-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and gauges for oil and coolant temperature. The seller reports that the speedometer intermittently sticks or reads higher than the actual speed. An analog clock and readouts for fuel level and oil pressure reside in the center of the dashboard. The six-digit odometer shows 171k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.0-liter B20F inline-four was overhauled in 2013 and is equipped with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection. An Isky camshaft is reportedly fitted, and work following the seller’s acquisition involved replacing the spark plugs and wires as well as the throttle position sensor.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and the seller tells us the overdrive was replaced and the transmission was serviced in 2022. An IPD stainless-steel exhaust is fitted.
