1908 Fabrique Nationale FN Four
This 1908 Fabrique Nationale FN Four is equipped with a 412cc T-head inline-four equipped with a Bosch magneto, a spray-type carburetor, atmospheric inlet valves, and a four-into-one exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheel through a single-speed transmission with an exposed driveshaft. Finished in black, the bike rides on 24″ wire-spoke wheels and is further equipped with a leading-link fork, a rear coaster brake, a sprung solo saddle, and a pull-back handlebar. This FN Four was purchased by its current owner in 2019 and is now offered on dealer consignment in Rhode Island for display or off-road use only with a bill of sale.
The FN Four, built in Liège, Belgium, by arms manufacturer Fabrique Nationale Herstal from 1905 until 1923, was the world’s first production inline-four motorcycle. This example’s 1.5-gallon fuel tank, frame, and fenders are finished in black, and the bike is equipped with a sprung solo saddle with degraded brown leather along with a bicycle-style crankset.
Wire-spoke 24″ wheels are mounted with older 2.125″ Goodyear tires that show cracks in the sidewalls. The bike’s sole suspension consists of a leading-link fork, and stopping power is handled by a rear coaster brake that is actuated using the foot pedals, the right of which is missing.
A black-finished pullback bar carries a lever for a missing rear rim brake on the right, and levers mounted to the frame’s top tube control the ignition timing, air mixture, and choke. The bike is not equipped with instrumentation, therefore total mileage is unknown.
The longitudinally mounted T-head 412cc inline-four is started with bicycle-style pedals that are connected to the rear wheel via a stand-alone drive chain. Equipment includes a spray-type carburetor, a Bosch magneto ignition system, atmospheric inlet valves, and a four-into-one exhaust system. The engine is manually lubricated via a hand-operated pump located on the right side of the fuel tank.
Power is sent to the rear wheel through a single-speed transmission and an exposed driveshaft.
The bike does not have a title or registration and is being sold on a bill of sale only.
