You know that orange wood nobody wants? Yeah, it’s gotta go. I’m turning this orangey dresser into a light wood beauty, and trust me—it’s easier than it looks when you’ve got the right tools. 💪

Here’s how I flipped this piece in no time (and how you can too!):

1️⃣ Strip & Sand: First things first, strip that old finish and sand smooth.

2️⃣ Bleach with Oxalic Acid: This is where the orange starts to vanish. Oxalic acid brightens up the wood like magic. 💥

3️⃣ Hand Sand: Yes, we’re sanding again to make it smooth and ready after raising the grain.

4️⃣ Paint Wash: This is where the magic happens! Prep work is one of the most important steps in refinishing furniture. Sanding your piece in preparation for paint or stain can make or break your final finish. Keep reading for my best sanding tips, and SAVE this video so you can refer back to it later!

1️⃣ SANDPAPER GRIT

80 grit: sand through layers of paint or stain - never use on bare wood or veneer
120-180 grit: smooth your piece and prep it for paint or stain
220-320 grit: gentle sanding in between layers of primer or paint
400 grit: gentle sanding in between layers of topcoat

2️⃣ SAND THROUGH THE GRITS

If you start with 80 grit, always make sure to do another pass with 100 grit, and then again with 120 or 150 grit, and finish with 180 or 220 grit. This prevents sanding swirls! Kate on Instagram: "Welp here we have finally reached my favorite of all stripping methods and that would be this fantastic inexpensive drill attachment set (it is under “tools” in my amazon storefront if you want to see the one i used) and it comes with 9 brush heads (3 different types, 3 different grit levels) that fit on any traditional drill! Again i used these on all of these even detailed appliqués i just used the higher grit brush heads for those areas and just was more careful about how long i held the drill to those spots!
