Dark nebula

This dramatic image of a mammoth celestial body was captured to help celebrate the ESO's 60th anniversary.

Stars are forming in dark, dusty molecular cloud LDN 988. From dark sky sites this region can be identified by eye alone. It's part of the Great Rift of dark nebulae along the plane of the Milky Way galaxy known as the Northern Coalsack. Only about 2,000 light-years away, narrowband and near-infrared explorations of the dark nebula have revealed energetic shocks and outflows light-years across associated with dozens of newborn stars. The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is an iconic dark nebula in the constellation Orion. Along with the nearby Flame Nebula (NGC 2024), this region is one of my absolute favorite deep-sky targets to shoot with my DSLR camera and telescope.

This one is a composite of 2.5 hours of H-alpha from my QHY9 CCD and 2 hours of RGB from my modified Canon XSi DSLR. Both through my William Optics 66mm triplet at f5.6. They didn't line up perfectly, but if you don't look to closely it's a reasonably nice blend of nebulosity from the h-alpha data and star colours from the RGB data. Framed it just for kicks.
