One of the Boston Tea Party ships, a replica of the former whaling brig Beaver, docked at Fort Point Channel visitor's center. It's small -- just 85 feet long and 24 feet abeam – because whaling vessels of the era could not draft more than 9 feet deep due to a sand bar at Nantucket Harbor's entrance. On December 16, 1773, angry colonists boarded the Beaver and two other ships at Griffin's Wharf, tossing 432 cases of British tea into the harbor. Dave Delay photo (flickr.com/photos/ddelay/)

Boston Tea Party, precursor to the American Revolution in which 342 chests of tea belonging to the British East India Company were thrown into Boston Harbor by American patriots disguised as Mohawk Indians on December 16, 1773. They were protesting a tax on tea and the East India Company’s perceived monopoly.

The Tea Act was set in 1773 by Great Britain's Parliament. Since tea was being so heavily boycotted among the colonies, the Tea Act was needed in order for the tea company not to fail. The Tea Act gave the East India Company the right to sell tea among the colonies to reduce the large amount of tea they obtained. This would help the tea company become financially stronger and prosper. This act led to one of the most memorable causes of the Revolution: NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.

We had a delicious royal afternoon tea at the newly opened, only North American Raffles hotel, in Boston's Back Bay. An expert eye for artful presentation and precision is evident from the luxurious Long Bar lounge design to the beautifully presented afternoon tea menu. This is an afternoon tea worth splurging on.
