Exalting, in the biblical context, refers to the act of lifting up, glorifying, or honoring someone or something, often in a spiritual or divine sense. This concept is deeply rooted in the Scriptures, where both God and His followers are called to exalt His name and His works.

Exalting God

The primary focus of exalting in the Bible is the exaltation of God. Believers are called to lift up the name of the Lord, acknowledging His supreme authority, majesty, and holiness. Psalm 34:3 invites the faithful to, "Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together." This call to exaltation is a communal act of worship, recognizing God's greatness and sovereignty.

Exalting God is not limited to verbal praise but extends to a lifestyle of obedience and reverence. In Isaiah 25:1 , the prophet declares, "O LORD, You are my God. I will exalt You; I will praise Your name, for You have worked wonders—plans formed long ago in perfect faithfulness." Here, exalting God is linked to acknowledging His faithful works and divine plans.

Exalting Christ

The New Testament emphasizes the exaltation of Jesus Christ as central to the Christian faith. Philippians 2:9-11 states, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." This passage highlights the divine exaltation of Christ following His humility and obedience unto death.

Believers are encouraged to exalt Christ in their hearts and lives, recognizing His lordship and the salvation He provides. In 1 Peter 3:15 , Christians are instructed to "sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts," which involves exalting Him above all else in one's life.

Exalting the Humble

The Bible also speaks of God exalting the humble, a theme that runs counter to worldly values. James 4:10 advises, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you." This principle is echoed in 1 Peter 5:6 , "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you."

This divine exaltation is not about personal glory but about being lifted up by God for His purposes. It reflects the biblical truth that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

Exalting in Worship

Exalting God is a central aspect of worship, both individually and corporately. The Psalms are replete with calls to exalt the Lord through song, prayer, and proclamation. Psalm 99:5 commands, "Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His footstool; He is holy."

Worship involves exalting God for His attributes, such as His holiness, love, and justice, and for His mighty acts in history and in the lives of His people. This act of exaltation is a response to God's revelation and a declaration of His worthiness.

Exalting in the Kingdom of God

In the Kingdom of God, the values of exaltation are often inverted compared to worldly standards. Jesus taught that "whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (Matthew 23:12). This teaching underscores the kingdom principle that true exaltation comes through humility and service, following the example of Christ Himself.

Exalting, therefore, is a multifaceted biblical concept that encompasses the worship and glorification of God, the recognition of Christ's lordship, the divine lifting of the humble, and the values of the Kingdom of God. It is an essential aspect of the believer's relationship with God and a reflection of His divine order.
