If you ever find yourself in Split-Dalmatia county, do not forget about Omiš, a famous port that offers many interesting sights. It’s about 25 kilometers away from Split, which can be reached via many traffic routes.
Omiš is also where the Cetina River reached the beautiful Adriatic Sea, making it look phenomenal in pictures. Nowadays, the municipality of Omiš counts about 14 000 people.
The History
Back in the age of the Illyrians and the Greeks, it was famous for naming various towns and villages by some geographical phenomenons.
Omiš is derived from Onaion or Oneon, which means „hill”. It’s also possible that the word came from Almissa, which means rock in the Proto-Indo-European language family.
If you know anything about pirates, you know that Omiš was famous for Corsairs of Almissa who used to leave their Sagittas, ships, nearby the town. These ships were pretty famous back in the day, and traveling through the Cetina river with them was simply a breeze.
Some of the most beautiful monuments worth visiting in Omiš could be the gorgeous Church of St Euphemia located by the couast and two fortresses – the Mirabella and the Starigrad fortress. Also, if you enjoy interesting cemeteries, this town will not let you down.
The Geography
As previously mentioned, the town is located on the very coast, where Cetina meets the sea. It’s located between the hills and the rocks, and many think it has the best potential for drone pictures out of all the Croatian sea towns.
The sea in this area is quite often turquoise, and it’s worth taking a bath, but not where the ships used to travel.
Why Should You Visit Omiš?
Omiš is a beautiful town that’s very easy to access, and there’s always something happening there. One of the most famous events is the festival of the Dalmatian a capella groups that sing to express the beauty of the coast.
