Injury to the oropharynx can be potentially life threatening. Innocent-looking injuries of the or... more Injury to the oropharynx can be potentially life threatening. Innocent-looking injuries of the oropharynx may result in intravascular thrombosis of the internal carotid artery. The symptoms often appear some time after the initial injury. We present a case in which an apparently minor injury of the oropharynx developed into a life-threatening thrombus stretching from the internal carotid to the brain. Our patient underwent endarterectomy and thrombectomy. The case is presented with a review of the literature.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of bronchiolitis during infancy and is... more Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of bronchiolitis during infancy and is associated with subsequent wheezing and asthma, but the nature of this association is not fully understood. In that sense, RSV bronchiolitis may serve as a marker, reflecting predisposition of the individual for virus-induced wheezing early in life and/ or asthma later in life. This review discusses existing data on RSV infection and respiratory complications later in life, as well as the link between RSV and asthma.
Peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) from asthmatic individuals lose their former ability to adhere ... more Peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) from asthmatic individuals lose their former ability to adhere to glass when incubated with leukotriene C4 (LTC4). A modified leukotriene-induced leukocyte adherence inhibition (LAI) assay was therefore used to study the ability of anti-asthmatic drugs to abrogate such activity. Ketotifen, disodium cromoglycate, Verapamil, and dimethpyridene, all at concentrations of 2 X 10(-6) M, were co-cultured with 2 X 10(-7) M LTC4 and their effect on the LTC4-induced LAI determined. Verapamil, Ketotifen, and disodium cromoglycate all inhibited the LTC4 activity while the H1 antagonist, dimethpyridene, did not. These results suggest that the beneficial effect of Verapamil, Ketotifen, and disodium cromoglycate in bronchial asthma is probably as calcium antagonists that cause the inhibition of leukotriene activity.

E. rosettes, mitogenic response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con A) as well as Con A induced suppression were measured in 15 asthmatic patients before and 1-3 months after treatment with ketotifen (1 mg x 2/day), and in 20 normal healthy controls. No significant difference in immunological parameters studied were found between the pre and post treatment periods in the asthmatic patients, neither was any difference demonstrated between the asthmatic and control group studied.
Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPX) levels were determined in 56 asthmatic children. Lowest ... more Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPX) levels were determined in 56 asthmatic children. Lowest levels were found during acute asthmatic attack (13.53 +/- 2.94 IU) which were significantly less than controls (20.4 +/- 5.44 IU) (P less than .001). Post-attack levels 1 week later rose significantly (16.77 +/- 2.63 IU), but were still less than normal values (P = .001). GPX levels (16.96 +/- 3.28 IU) were less than controls (P less than .03) even in patients with mild symptomatology. Asymptomatic patients receiving theophylline had normal levels. Low GPX activity in asthmatic patients may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

A new power plant has been in operation in Ashkelon since the end of 1990. In order to record the... more A new power plant has been in operation in Ashkelon since the end of 1990. In order to record the effect of the environmental changes on lung health, a prospective monitoring system was established during the planning and construction phase of the plant. Data about lung health in the general population as well as the sensitive population (asthma patients) are recorded, and air pollution is monitored by seven monitoring stations located within a 5-25 km radius of the power plant. The lung health monitoring system includes: (1) A record of all visits to the local emergency room. (2) A record of visits to ten representative outpatient clinics related to cardiac and pulmonary symptoms. (3) A close follow-up of 200 asthmatic children enrolled in the local pediatric pulmonary clinic. This includes spirometry four times yearly, an annual winter check-up by a pediatric pulmonologist, and daily symptoms diary filled in by each patient for two weeks after the spirometry. (4) Spirometry and health questionnaires filled out by the parents of the 3600 studied children once in three years. (5) Mortality rate monitoring, relying on the Ministry of Health death registration. This system has been in operation since 1988, collecting base line data; the follow-up is planned to be operating for ten years. A dynamic interaction of the environmental and epidemiological monitoring systems will facilitate more efficient control of the emmissions from the power plant and better protection of the health of the population.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) has been increasing worldwide. While the incidence in the youn... more The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) has been increasing worldwide. While the incidence in the young is lower than in adults, it mirrors that of the adult population. Infants do not exhibit typical symptoms, and may present with only a low-grade fever and a mild cough which resolves within a few days. Often physical examination is within normal limits. Over the past year we diagnosed TB, confirmed by culture and histology, in 6 children under 2 years of age. We wish to increase awareness among pediatricians of the clinical forms of this disease in children.
