William Clark O'Kelley was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1970 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon and served as a senior federal judge until his death on July 6, 2017.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, O'Kelley graduated from Emory University with his bachelor's degree in 1951 and from the Emory University School of Law with his LL.B. in 1953.[2]

Military service

O'Kelley served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957 and in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1957 to 1966.[2]

Judicial career

Northern District of Georgia

O'Kelley was nominated by President Richard M. Nixon on October 7, 1970, to a new seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia created by 84 Stat. 294. O'Kelley was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 13, 1970, and he received his commission on October 16, 1970. O'Kelley was the chief judge of the Northern District of Georgia from 1988 to 1994. He elected to take senior status beginning on October 1, 1996, and he served as a senior judge until his death on July 6, 2017. O'Kelley was succeeded in this position by Judge Richard Story.[2][1]
