Rya Weickert Zobel is a federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. At the time of her appointment, Zobel was a private practice attorney in Massachusetts. On April 1, 2014, Zobel assumed senior status after 35 years of service.[1]

Education

Zobel was born in Zwickau, Germany and graduated from Radcliffe College with her bachelor's degree in 1953. Zobel received her J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1956.[1]

Professional career

Zobel was a law clerk to former federal judge George Sweeney of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts from 1956 to 1966. Zobel was a private practice attorney in the State of Massachusetts from 1967 to 1979.[1]

Judicial career

District of Massachusetts

Zobel was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts by President Jimmy Carter on January 25, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Zobel was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 21, 1979, on a voice vote and received commission on March 23, 1979. Zobel assumed senior status on April 1, 2014[1]

Federal Judicial Center

From 1995 to 1999, Zobel served as the Director of the Federal Judicial Center.[1]
