Marina Garcia Marmolejo is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. She joined the court in 2011 after being nominated by President Barack Obama. Prior to joining the court, Marmolejo was a private practice attorney in Texas.[1]
Education
Marmolejo received her B.A. from the University of the Incarnate Word in 1992 and her M.A. and J.D. from St. Mary's University in 1996.[2]
Professional career
After graduating from law school, Marmolejo served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Western District of Texas.[1] She worked in the same position in the Southern District of Texas from 1998 to 1999. That year, she became Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas. In 2007, she went into private practice.[2]

President Obama nominated Marmolejo to the federal court on July 28, 2010.[2] She was recommended for this position by the state's two Republican senators.[3] Obama commented on the nomination, stating, "I am proud to nominate Marina Marmolejo to serve on the United States District Court. I am confident she will serve on the federal bench with distinction."[2]

Marmolejo's nomination was returned to the President at the end of the 111th Congress. President Obama resubmitted the nomination on January 5, 2011. Judge Marmolejo was confirmed on October 3, 2011, with a Senate voice vote.[5]
