Candidate Connection

Doug Marks participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on June 4, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Doug Marks's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

End the Drug war

End our military deployments

End personal income taxation[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Limitations placed upon the federal gov't.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Doug Marks answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I have read and felt aligned with some aspects of Barry Goldwater and Calvin Coolidge but I'd have to say Thomas Jefferson would be my 'go to' guy.[5]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Critical thinking, Integrity, an understanding of the role of gov't and where it ends.[5]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Critical thinking, Integrity, an understanding of the role of gov't and where it ends.[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Through the filter of the constitution, as a sitting senator I would be beholden to the will of the legislating bodies of the State of Arizona as I would be their voice.[5]
What legacy would you like to leave?
A reduction in the federal gov't to levels prior to Lincoln. Repealing the 16th & 17th Amendments. Adding constitutional amendments to specifically define the welfare and commerce clauses based upon the writings in the federalist & anti federalist papers.[5]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
Bobby Kennedy assassination, I was 7.[5]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Delivering newspapers which I did for 3 years.[5]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
"Make them hear you" from the musical Ragtime. The character Coalhouse makes a passionate plea for remembrance as he is going to give his life so others can live. Yes, I'm a theater nerd.[5]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Understanding how taxation is considered, okay.[5]
What qualities does the U.S. Senate possess that makes it unique as an institution?
It represents the states in Washington and is the forward face of legislation to the world.[5]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for senators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Why? Does experience in those give one greater critical thinking skills to find better decisions or solutions? I don't believe it does nor did the founders of this country. These jobs were to be filled by common folks no different than anyone else. There is some education required to function like Robert's Rules of Order and the Senate rules but outside of that a good dose of common sense, integrity, fair play, and an open mind with a desire for peace will suffice.[5]
What do you think of the filibuster?
Truly an overplayed waste of time.[5]
What criteria would you apply when deciding whether to confirm presidential appointees?
Depends on the appointee[5]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Creating trade friends where we dropped drones and taking care of all the hurt soldiers and their families, as promised![5]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other senators?
Yes.[5]
If you are not a current senator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Appropriations, Armed Services, Commerce, Finance, and Foreign Relations.[5]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. Senate, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
I'd be the only one then there is that...[5]
Is there a particular senator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
No[5]
