|I'm running to fix the broken public safety infrastructure leaving our sons and daughters dying, I am fighting our broken mental health system that allows homelessness to be rampant and substance abuse to take our brothers and sisters, and I'm fighting for a better infrastructure for our broken streets, bike lanes and sidewalks.
- Trust in Public Safety is at an all time low.
- Out Mental Health and Social Support systems are broken
- Our Streets grow more and more dangerous every day.
I ask for data directly from IMPD. This year, key terminology has been changed as that the mayor can claim a win. All the while the raw data shows we are in the wrong direction.
Downtown is suffering due to lack of growth, allowing our vibrancy to languish. We let others control the narrative about safety, when for most of us that live downtown, we wouldn't live anywhere else. However, we do not clean the streets, we do not give homes to the homeless and they line up in the only areas they know they will be fed -- where the tourists show up. We do not promote ourselves and have let amazing programs suffer due to the lack of vision.
Residents should always have say in the process. It should not be solely the decision of lawmakers and those that donate to the campaign fund. I am a community activist, I believe that citizens should be there for every decision.
Transparency is key to everything. Without transparency, the public cannot trust us.
Public Safety Plan for Indianapolis
1. Introduce Civilian-Based Crisis Response to address mental health crises, homelessness issues, and wellness checks.
2. Rebuild Transparent Community-Based Policing, including more civilian oversight, mandated release of body-worn camera footage within a short timeframe, and accountability to the public.
3. Ending the war on drugs with a focus on ending addiction and overdose.
4. Stopping gun trafficking at the crossroads of America by working with the US Attorney and programs like Project Safe Neighborhoods.
5. Create a better model to minimize ‘Use of Force’ and create a de-escalation model.
Our officers are at the lowest morale in years. And our trust in policing has always suffered, No one is trying to unite the two sides. We need radical transparency -- we need to have statistics of crime easily available, we need all body-cam footage released within 2 weeks of any incidents, we need to know our officers have our backs and remove any from the streets that we have lost trust in.
My significant other is an environmental scientist working as a consultant with city, state and federal. We are failing in a lot of ways. That said, I would lean on her for a lot of her expertise, while asking that she recuse herself from citywide contracting.
A 4-Point Plan for Revitalizing Infrastructure
1. Prioritize repairs and maintenance: It is important to prioritize repairs and maintenance to prevent small issues from becoming larger, more expensive problems. The city should regularly assess the condition of its infrastructure and prioritize repairs based on need.
2. Invest in technology and innovation: Technology and innovation can help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of infrastructure projects. For example, the city could invest in sensors and data analytics to better understand and predict the needs of its infrastructure, or explore the use of advanced materials and construction techniques.
3. Engage with stakeholders: Infrastructure projects can have a significant impact on the community, and it is important to engage with stakeholders to understand their needs and concerns. This could include holding public meetings, working with community groups, and seeking input from local businesses and residents.
4. Develop a long-term plan: It is important to have a long-term plan in place to ensure that infrastructure in Indianapolis is maintained and improved over time. This could include setting goals and benchmarks, identifying priorities, and establishing a timeline for completing projects.
We are down over 200 officers. I am proposing a 200 unit force of unarmed civilians that will handle the mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness crisis.
Officers have told me over and over they do not want to be social workers. I agree. Let them focus on what they are good at. And let those that are good at handling social services handle what they are.
My background is in community-based mental health, along with an empirically driven science background. I am passionate about creating a world where the most suffering can thrive, and to life all with it.
My first job was delivering newspapers as a pre-teen in Benton, Arkansas as a kid. Delivered both Grit as well as the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
A mayor should not be going to dinners nor shaking hands every day. They should be out on the street leading projects, ensuring that the boring work gets done, that the most vulnerable's needs are met.
We need to lift the city, we don't need to lift our egos just because we got it wrong in our last two terms.
Our mayor is never at the city council and refuses to act with them in public. I would be at meetings and open myself up to the public.
We have a sense of community that cannot be beaten. Our communities are giving, and cultured, and weird, and they are all the things we want in a vibrant city. And yet, our representatives do nothing to promote these which leads to the feeling that we are a cold city until folks dig deep into the culture.
We are the economic driver for the state with 70% of the economy coming from one country. We should have a far larger seat at the table, and yet we have our wallets stripped for communities that want nothing more that to see us fail. We need to be better stewards to the rest of our state, but with the expectation that they understand we should control our own destiny -- not the other way around.
