City government

The city of Santa Fe utilizes a council-manager system. In this form of municipal government, an elected city council—which includes the mayor and serves as the city's primary legislative body—appoints a chief administrative officer called a city manager to oversee day-to-day municipal operations and implement the council's policy and legislative initiatives.[2][3]

Mayor

The mayor appoints the city manager, with approval from the city council. He or she has a vote on the city council and represents the city on the state, national, and international levels.[3]

The current Mayor of Santa Fe is Alan Webber (nonpartisan). Webber assumed office in 2018.

City manager

The city manager is the city's chief administrative officer. He or she is responsible for overseeing the city's day-to-day operations, including by hiring city employees and implementing the city's operating budget.[2][3]

City council

The Santa Fe City Council is the city's primary legislative body. It is responsible for adopting the city budget, levying taxes, and making or amending city laws, policies, and ordinances.[3]

Eight members of the city council are elected by district, while the mayor is elected at large.[4]

Santa Fe has a Democratic mayor. As of November 2024, the mayors of 37 state capitals are affiliated with the Democratic Party, six are Republicans, one is independent, and two are nonpartisan. The partisan affiliation of four state capital mayors is unknown. While most mayoral elections in state capital cities are nonpartisan, most officeholders are affiliated with a political party.

Budget

The city's budget process operates by fiscal years running from July 1 to June 30 of the next year.[5] The city manager is responsible for preparing a proposed annual budget. The city council, including the mayor, adopt the budget by resolution.[6]
