Laws governing ballot measures in Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Legislature may place measures on the ballot as legislatively referred constitutional amendments, legislatively referred state statutes, legislatively referred bond measures, and legislatively referred constitutional convention questions. Referred amendments, statutes, bond measures, and constitutional convention questions require a simple majority vote from each chamber during one legislative session. Statutes and bond measures require the signature of the governor to appear on the ballot.
The Rhode Island Constitution requires that a constitutional convention question appear on the ballot at least once every 10 years.
