Michael Manypenny (Democratic Party) was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, representing District 49. He assumed office in 2008. He left office in 2014.

Manypenny (Democratic Party) ran for election to the West Virginia House of Delegates to represent District 73. He lost in the general election on November 8, 2022.

Manypenny was also a 2016 Democratic candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 1st Congressional District of West Virginia.[1]

Manypenny earned his B.S. in agriculture/forestry from West Virginia University in 1986.

Manypenny was the owner of Blue Ridge Landscaping and Environmental Services from 1979 to 1987. He then worked as manager of Prime Landscaping from 1986 to 1990 and as manager of Central Coast Landscape from 1990 to 1994. From 1999 to 2008, he was Director of Global Impact, Incorporated. Manypenny worked as an operations manager for Oak Grove Greenhouses from 2003 to 2008. He has also been an agricultural/environmental consultant.

Manypenny was a campaigner for the West Virginia Presidential Election Campaign in 2000. He was a candidate for the West Virginia State House of Delegates in 2004 and 2006 but was not elected.[2]

Issues

Marijuana legalization

In 2013, Manypenny introduced a bill to legalize marijuana in limited and medical cases. Manypenny said that marijuana could be more effective and less harmful than some prescribed drugs, including drugs given to children with epilepsy. In September 2013, after the Obama administration announced that the federal government would not punish states for legalizing marijuana as long as the distribution was regulated, Manypenny told The Charleston Gazette that his chances for successfully forwarding his legislation had increased.[3]

Elections for the West Virginia House of Delegates took place in 2014. A primary election took place on May 13, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was January 25, 2014. Incumbent Michael Manypenny was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Amy Summers was unopposed in the Republican primary. Manypenny defeated Summers in the general election.[4]

Manypenny ran for re-election in the 2012 election for West Virginia House of Delegates, District 49. Manypenny defeated Francis W. Nestor in the May 8 primary election and defeated Jeff Tansill in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[5][6][7]
