U.S. municipal elections, 2017

The city of Cleveland, Ohio, held elections for mayor, city council, and clerk of the municipal court in 2017. All 17 seats on the city council were up for election. Fifteen of 17 members of the council filed for re-election. The two open city council races are in Wards 2 and 10, where Councilmen Reed and Johnson filed to run for mayor.

Automatic recounts were triggered in the Ward 1 and 7 races because official results showed margins smaller than 0.5 percent. In these races, challengers Joe Jones and Basheer Jones were ahead of incumbents Terrell Pruitt and TJ Dow by eight and 13 votes, respectively. The recounts were conducted during the week of December 4-8. The recounts confirmed Jones and Jones as the winners of the two races.[1][2]

Only races with more than two candidates running appeared on the primary election ballot. Out of 17 council districts, 11 required a primary election. The two candidates in each race who received the most votes advanced to the general election. The races for Wards 3, 8, 11, 12, 15, and 16 only appeared on the general election ballot.

There were also three local ballot measures on the general election ballot: a proposal to renew a tax for the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, a proposal to renew and increase a tax for the use of the Cleveland Public Library, and a $227 million bond question for the Cuyahoga Community College District. All three measures were approved by voters.
