In an effort to bring some normalcy back to the lives of soldiers injured during WWI, American sculptor Anna Coleman Ladd created portrait masks for the men to wear over their facial disfigurements.

GREAT WAR: The war's combatants were young men, who had to live with the results. That could be a loss of limb, damaged eyesight, or lung damage from mustard gas. Perhaps, the most difficult to deal with was a facial disfigurement. Recreated here is a a prosthetic mask used in lieu of plastic surgery to hide a veteran's facial disfigurement. The artist attempted to give back a bit of what was taken away.
