Looking up at Bolton Castle from within the gardens. Bolton Castle is a medieval fortress built by Richard le Scorpe in the 14th century in the small village of Castle Bolton, in Wensleydale. The castle sits halfway up the valley in the midst of the Yorkshire Dales, saw action in the Civil War and was used as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots.
