This is an example of a column from the Persian Empire era (559 B.C. - 1600 A.D.). It features addorsed (back-to-back) animals upon the top of the column, which was typical of the time period. Columns similar to this one featured in the photo were usually made of stone, but it was not uncommon for columns in residential homes is be made from wood, covered in plaster, and painted to resemble stone. Most of the carved relief figures were painted also.
