Table Scraps - A Table Topper

My "liberated quilting"  table topper is complete.  Because the top and the backing would need different thread colors for the binding,  I chose to hand sew the binding to the back.

I have to say that the binding looks a lot better than if I machine stitched it in place. This little quilted topper makes me really happy.  It ticks all the boxes.
Scrappy/using up scraps ✅
Fun and random piecing ✅
Colorful  ✅
Random quilting designs  ✅
Finished!  ✅

Here is the finished piece, although it has not been in the wash yet.  That is my final step before I consider it "really finished."

In the borders, I used two different styles of triangular design.    Both were inspired by the quilting I saw in a photo from the Liberated Quiltmaking II  book by Gwen Marston.   Here are some closeups.

In the skinny insertions in the borders,  I did pebbles. In the one wider blue insertion, I quilted swirls.  All of that shows up well in the above three photos.

My next project????? I haven't decided.   I suppose I should spend more time learning my lines for the play I will be in in September - unless we have another quarantine lockdown.

PLAID - Finished

Yes, the plaid quilt is finished.  This quilt is a convergence design using one (discontinued) gradient from Colorways by Vicki. The borders are from a different gradient that she wasn't happy with and used as a giveaway prize. (Lucky me!)

I love the full range of colors in this quilt. Using the convergence plan (a Ricky Tims design) makes it look like a lovely plaid.  I opted for a black binding as the edges are mostly dark.

I had this "no-name" batik in my stash from years ago, so I decided to use it as the backing.

I think these photos do justice to this little table topper quilt.  I haven't decided where it should go at this point, so it is over a chair back so I can see it frequently. (grin) I love the colors and the design.

I need to pull out another PHD (project half done) and start toward another finish.   Heaven knows I have several more (several??? ha ha) in various places. I know that I have at least three tops that need quilted. Not to mention projects that were started and "put on hold" and forgotten. Or not forgotten but waiting for their time to be ripe for completion.

First September Finish

In the last post, I told you about preparing a binding.  Thanks to that binding, I have the first finish of September.  I am loving it!   One of my favorite things is how the corners mitered perfectly including the flange!

I confess I slowed down a lot when I got to the corners to be sure it lined up nicely.  I got my needle to drop precisely in the corner.  Yaay me!

I took this quilt to the park, along with another that you will see in a couple of days.  I put this one on the bench  in the shade - it was over 90F outside and little or no breeze.
You can see in the above photo that the backing matches the outer binding.  It was super easy to make that decision.  And the front has so many fabrics that anything would have been okay there.  I do wish I had added borders so the flanged binding would show up more.

It would have been really great if the bright green that was used for the diamond had been in my stash for the flange.  But this is a true scrap quilt and I had used most of that green in the string blocks. The diamond focal point was a last minute decision while I was laying out the blocks.

I hope you are putting your scraps to good use. They can add up to a really fun quilt.

"fine" (pronounced fee'-nay)

'The Italian musical term "fine" (pronounced fee'-nay) means "end," and marks the end of the composition.'

Need I say more?

I auditioned several fabrics for the binding to no avail. None of it was singing to me.  Then I decided to look in my bin of fat quarters. There were two of the purple ones, just alike.  I auditioned them and they sang a lovely song.  Ahhhh, music to my eyes!

Another *little* Finish

Some of you will remember my tumbler quilt top. I finished it quite a while back.

So finally I backed it and quilted it last weekend.  Tonight I put on a binding made from the same fabric as the green tumbler blocks.
Yaay for another finish!!!   Here is a picture that shows the pieced backing also.

Sorry for the glare from the flash. I don't have a place with good lighting to take my photos.

A Finish -commission quilt

Short and to the point  - I finished one of my two commission quilts.  These have really thick batting by request of the person who commissioned me.  I don't plan to use that stuff ever again ---well once I finish the SECOND one to fulfill the commission.
Here is a tiny peek at the quilt.  Sorry I can't show the whole thing.

Crinkly Quilted Goodness

First off, I washed three new lap quilts to get them ready for the sale. How is this for a pile of crinkly soft goodness?

Now, I showed a bit of this quilt earlier when it was just my "framed square" blocks. Well this one is one of my favorite squares. Isn't the little bird on the branch a happy sight?

Here is most of the quilt, some of it hung over the back of my easel and didn't make it into the picture.

I think I love doing wild free-motion quilting. For a while I thought I did too much quilting on this one. Now I understand what Goldilocks was talking about "this one is just right"

Bound and Determined

No April Foolin' No siree!

I was "bound and determined" to get this quilt finished tonite. (yes pun intended!)

So I sat at the sewing machine and sewed the final part of the binding. I have finished my first "Quilt As You Go" quilt. I am so happy!

This bright beauty goes on my bed! The front and the back are both bright loud colors. This is really a fun quilt. Even the binding is "scrappy" I used extra jelly roll strips that I had in my stash. They all have dots on them so there is a bit of a theme to the binding..but more importantly they are all bright and colorful to go with the quilt.
