the tiniest bit of insanity

Summary:

sugawara gets up to hijinks during the training camp and drags akaashi into it. just some hints of sugaaka but its mostly generic shenanigans that ensue really

Work Text:

“I ask this question with every ounce of diplomacy and tact at my disposal, and I am hoping that you will not take any undue offense—but are you sure you are not just the tiniest bit insane?”

Sugawara only laughs and waves airily at Akaashi, who is looking over with an expression of worry and exasperation.

‘Of course not! This will be fun!’

Akaashi rolls his eyes. He did not expect Karasuno’s older setter - and vice-captain too, no less, having the same roles as himself, except that he was a year older - to be this playful. Sugawara seemed convinced that it was a good idea, and no matter how many times Akaashi had tried to talk him out of it (while trying to hide his slight exasperation and remain respectful to the senior), he wouldn’t budge.

Now one of the dorm rooms had been elaborately set up - filled with string tied from one end to another, a bucket balancing precariously on the doorframe, a sack of flour (where did he even get that from? Akaashi ponders) waiting to swing down at the unlucky person who would trigger it, and much more. The irony was that Sugawara had also laid out mats on the floor, so if anyone fell they wouldn’t be hurt too badly.

'I’m a genius! See, Akaashi, these traps trigger one by one, so we need at least three people to come in!’

'Why are you doing this.’

'Why not! We deserve to have a bit of break from all that practice, right?’

Akaashi lets out a long sigh, one that really reflected how he was feeling towards the older boy. 'With all due respect, Suga-san, but you’ve spent at least an hour setting this up instead of practicing, bathing or sleeping, and you also got me to accompany you in this, when I’ve repeatedly said that it was a terrible idea, and-’

'Oh Akaashi, you’re so boring.’

Akaashi’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly, and Sugawara, who had just finished tying up the last knot in place, glances over at him and laughs again, that refreshing laugh of his, and flashes Akaashi his biggest grin and a thumbs up. Akaashi had to will himself not to show any break in his expression, folding his arms.

'Just you wait, Aka-kun, this will all be worth it!’

Akaashi makes it a point to roll his eyes slowly and obviously. Sugawara had started calling him 'Aka-kun’ a while after they got acquainted, and whether it was due to affectionate reasons or anything else, Akaashi had to admit to himself that he found it rather endearing, and Sugawara knew that that name would get Akaashi’s usually stoic demeanour to soften ever so little.

'Well then, who should be our unlucky victims?’ Sugawara rubs his hands in glee, looking over at Akaashi excitedly, who sighs again, then, wanting to humour him, vaguely suggests the three captains - Bokuto, Kuroo and Sawamura - since Akaashi knew that they were holed up somewhere playing card games or chatting. Sugawara nods, winks, then shouts, really really loudly, for the captains to come down.

There is dead silence following the shout, then suddenly the duo could identify Kuroo’s voice pierce through it, 'What’s happened?’

Just in time, Kenma slides open the door behind Sugawara and Akaashi, causing the two to jump.

'What are you two doing in here….I heard Suga-san…’ Kenma flatly asks, but Sugawara could tell that his curiosity had been piqued, especially after his eyes widened a little at the state of the room.

'Just in time, Kenma! Here, squeeze in, just be verrry careful…’ Sugawara eases Kenma into the room and slides the door shut behind them. Akaashi gives Sugawara a look that plainly said great now you’ve brought him into this, but Suga smiles with glee.

'CAPTAINS!!! THE SETTERS WANT YOU GUYS TO COME DOWN AND HELP US FOR A BIT!! IT’S QUITE IMPORTANT!’ Sugawara yells. Kenma visibly flinches, while Akaashi sighs in a oh no now he’s done it way.

The trio could hear footsteps stomping down the stairs and towards the room, with Bokuto calling 'Akaashi needs help? That’s a start!’, Kuroo snickering 'Oh, Kenma~~’ and Daichi sighing 'Damn it Suga, what have you done now’, before Bokuto slams open the door, seeing the three setters at the other corner of the room, and bounds inwards.

'Akaashiiii~ OOF!’

Bokuto manages in only halfway before he triggers a string and the flour sack slams him in the face and bursts open, covering him entirely in flour. Disoriented, he swings around, trying to get the flour out of his eyes, hitting into Kuroo, who had obviously noticed the strings and was trying to manuveur around them, but getting hit by Bokuto and the two go collapsing onto the floor, triggering all the strings at once, and Daichi, watching the commotion from the door, soon has a bucket on his head and his entire body soaked with water.

Sugawara bursts into laughter, and soon Akaashi and Kenma join in. The sight of Bokuto and Kuroo, both covered in flour and a tangle of strings, lying on the floor in a very interesting position, and Daichi at the door with a bucket on his head, completely unmoving, was too much to handle. Kenma takes his chance to snap a clear photo (it was so difficult, his hands were shaking from laughing), then Sugawara slides open the door, grabs hold of both Akaashi and Kenma’s arms, and drags them out, running into the dorm, all the while laughing maniacally.

No one ever let them live it down, and the three setters were punished with extra laps around the camp.
