Chapter 7: Now Pretty Baby I'm Running...

Summary:

Sara was finally free from Gretchen, and all she wanted was to go back to Michael, but Michael was still in Sona where she couldn’t reach him, so she went to the only other person she knew she could trust unconditionally. That was how she found herself explaining all that had happened over the last few weeks to a very concerned Bruce.

Notes:

This chapter takes place during season 3 whenever Sara is supposed to have gotten away from Gretchen.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Sara was finally free from Gretchen, and all she wanted was to go back to Michael, but Michael was still in Sona where she couldn’t reach him, so she went to the only other person she knew she could trust unconditionally. That was how she found herself explaining all that had happened over the last few weeks to a very concerned Bruce.

“You were willing to go to prison for him?” That seemed to be the point in the story that bothered Bruce the most.

“It wasn’t just for him Bruce; it was the right thing to do. Lincoln Burrows was framed.” Sara was happy to see Bruce, she truly was, the man had practically raised her after all. She was however growing increasingly exasperated with having to continuously reexplain herself to him.

“I know but Sara you were kidnapped, you... You could’ve died.” Sara moved closer to Bruce, taking his hands in an attempt to show she appreciated his concern.

“Believe me I know, but I’m a grown woman now Bruce, and I can make my own choices.” Bruce sighed before bringing her close for a hug.

“I just want you to be safe Sara, that’s all I’ve ever wanted.” She couldn’t stay mad at him, not when he had shown her more love than her own father ever had.

“I need your help getting in contact with Michael and Lincoln, they need to know that I’m okay.”

“Sara...” He had let go off her and walked away. “You’re not wanted anymore, it’s over you, you don’t have to keep going with this.”

“No, it’s not. Michael is in prison again right now because of me, The Company is still threatening him, LJ is still with Gretchen, and who knows what else has happened since I’ve left. The least I could do is tell them that I’m okay, he needs to know that I’m okay.”

Bruce paced around pensively; he clearly was still against her desire to go back to Michael. Sara couldn’t blame him, she’d be lying if she denied her urge to cut and run, but it wouldn’t be right or fair to Michael.

“Sara, you risked everything for me once...now it’s time to say thank you.”

“What about this: I take you to a safe place, but you write a letter for Michael and I’ll make sure it gets to him.” Bruce smiled, this was the closest to a submission he would get and Sara knew that.

She took a deep breath before she responded, “Okay, I can do that.” Bruce’s shoulders relaxed at her concession.

“I’ll make the arrangements then.” Bruce left to the next room, and Sara sat down with a pen and paper. She was left incredibly uninspired with what to write. How could she encapsulate all she felt in such a limited space? They weren’t enough words to convey all of her feelings for Michael, and there never really would be. She resigned herself to her most basic thoughts:

“Dear Michael,

I escaped, and while I’m not completely okay, I’m much closer to being safe than I have been in a while. If I know you then I know that you’re working as hard as possible to free LJ, you may have even begun to blame yourself for what happened to us, but it isn’t your fault Michael, it’s The Company’s. Believe me, if I had the choice, I’d be right there with you in Panama, but for now it’s just not possible. This isn’t a goodbye, as I have no doubt that we’ll soon find our way back to one another, we tend to do that a lot after all. As soon as I am able, I’ll be making my way back to you, I promise. On the bright side, maybe I can take up origami to stave off the boredom and give you a run for your money Scofield. Send my regards to Lincoln.

All my love,

  Sara.”

She hoped that would be enough for Michael for the moment, it was all she could offer him at the moment, even though she wanted to give him so much more. When Bruce came back, she gave him the letter, closed so he wouldn’t read it. “Promise me you’ll make sure this gets to him.” Bruce took the letter from her hands and nodded, before placing the letter back on the table.

“I’ve made all the arrangements Sara; you’re going to be safe now.” If only he realized how little her own safety mattered to her in the moment. Maybe he did and that was why he was sending her away.

“I can’t thank you enough Bruce. I really can’t.”

Bruce rolled his eyes playfully, “Sara you should know by now that you don’t have to thank me. I’m always going to have your best interests at heart.” Sara’s eyes prickled with tears as she hugged Bruce one last time.

“I’m sure I’ll see you soon, goodbye Bruce.”

Bruce lightly kissed the top of her head, “Goodbye Sara.”

Notes:

This chapter seems a little bit like filler but I just really wanted to write Sara and Bruce and the events of this chapter will later come back in the story. The next chapter takes place in the 7 year gap.
