Chapter Text

“Can you believe I got this green onion for only 50 yen!” Hatsune Miku exclaimed while swinging it around, right along with her plastic bag of purchased goods. She was being however careful to not hit the rose bushes lining the asphalt sidewalk, as well as her yellow-haired companion who had joined her on her late grocery run. She was giggling as she walked beside her blue-haired friend, swinging her own bag of groceries back and forth, although considerably more carefully, she was the one carrying the eggs after all.

“What is it with you and green onions?” Rin chuckled, hand raised to slightly muffle it, all while looking fondly at her twin-tailed green-onion-lover of a friend. “You always buy those- and Crypton forbid if there’s a sale-” “There’s a green onion sale!?” Miku exclaimed again, face having gotten way up close and personal to Rin’s, eyes twinkling- “No no! If! If!!”

Kagamine Rin watched as the blue haired girl’s shoulders fell in disappointment, face following suit not long after. “Oh.” Miku muttered, backing off a bit and immediately pouting, languidly swinging her bag and kicking a stone she spotted onto the road. The yellow-haired girl sighed, patting her friend on the back, looking at her endearingly as she found her enthusiasm cute, along with her pouting.

Hatsune Miku sighed, muttering something like ‘Got my hopes up and everything-’ Prompting a stifled snicker from Rin. “You’re cute when you’re pouty.” Her lips slipped- prompting her to bite them in retaliation- as her cheeks slightly dusting themselves with red.

“What was that-?” her friend turned to look at her- and she swears that for a second she saw some pink on her cheeks. Rin shook her head, not wanting to kid herself as she brought her free hand up to her head, scratching it in mock-obliviousness. “Oh? Did I say something?”

Miku’s lips drew into a sly smile, not buying it. “Pretty sure you did~” Forget Rin’s cheeks becoming slightly dusted- They were blatantly turning redder as she her eyes flitted around, looking for something or other to use as an excuse to explain her way out of this, like she always did, as she was beyond incapable of actually dealing with her feelings. “W-Well-” She stuttered- before a comical exclamation mark appeared beside her head- spotting an orange tail in the rose bushes a bit further ahead and rushing to point at it.

“YOU’RE RIGHT I DID SAY SOMETHING- THERE’S A CUTE CAT IN THAT BUSH-!” She blurted, redirecting Miku’s attention away from her and to the tail, sighing in relief that her improv excuse seemed to have worked as her friend’s attention stayed on the tail, before noticing how said friend had brought her eyebrows together into a frown.

“Miku-?” “Rose bushes have thorns.” The blue-haired Vocaloid remarked swiftly before depositing her green onion into her shopping bag as she headed towards the cat, giving Rin all she needed to put the pieces together herself. “Oh-” Rin blanked, before it clicked as her eyebrows furrowed in concern, muttering a quick and low “oh no-” as she followed her friend.

Miku crouched down in front of the bush, setting her bag aside on the sidewalk as worry etched itself into her face as she gingerly pushed the leaves apart, wincing at what she saw. A small orange tabby had gotten caught up in the stems and thorns, hairs on end as it was too scared to move. Every time it had the thorns had pricked its skin, such was evident from the scrapes and cuts it had sustained, along with the thorns visibly stuck in its fur.

Miku was visibly frowning as Rin crouched down next to her, wincing as she saw the sight herself. “Oh you poor thing-” Rin muttered before Miku leaned further in, trying to get a good angle to grab the frightened kitty while simultaneously dodging all the thorns. It flinched, noticing the two and staring at them with wide eyes, its pupils forming thin slits. Miku paused, noticing it pushing itself further into the thorns out of fear, letting out a low rumble, clearly a warning growl.

“Miku-” Rin gingerly grabbed her shoulder, visibly concerned as Miku looked back at her. “It’s too scared, even if you grab it- it’ll just panic and hurt both you and itself.” Miku was about to protest, incredulous as she couldn’t believe Rin would abandon a poor animal in need of help- Before shutting up as she watched Rin set her own bag of groceries down beside Miku’s, and scoot closer to the bush. She had a concentrated look on her face, as she carefully reached and moved more of the thorned bush out of the way, taking over for Miku. “Here, I’ll hold the thorns away- you get the poor cat to settle down and let you help it.”

Hatsune Miku could feel herself mentally facepalm- of course- of all people- Kagamine Rin would never do anything as heartless as that- She sighed, shaking her head as she redirected her attention back to the predicament the cat had gotten itself into.

It took several minutes, around 20 at least, to earn the cat’s trust. Miku had started by gently holding her hand out, letting it sniff it at its own leisure, really trying to show she wasn’t a threat- She slowly worked her way up, inching her hand closer and closer until the orange cat willingly bopped its head against it. Then it was gently touching- before finally getting to petting. The cat seemed to have calmed down considerably, its pupils resembling almonds a lot more than just slits now.

From there, it took another 15 minutes as the duo carefully worked to remove all the thorns, move the stems and put them aside, Rin collecting them, careful to not get pricked while Miku firmly held the cat’s neck, just to keep it from squirming. Unfortunately they did get some pricks and cuts here and there- Miku specifically getting way more of them from a specific anxious feline.

It had taken them 40 minutes since they’d started- the sky was even starting to turn orange but now they have one squirming cat in Miku’s arms, a whole bunch of scratches they’re gonna need to disinfect when they get home, and a relieved consciousness while sitting on the asphalt, having gotten the poor cat out of the thorny rose bush.

Rin grinned at the mangy little thing, leaning down to boop its snoot. “This thing is gonna need a bath-” She snickered before looking up at Miku “You get to deal with that,” Miku remarked as she snickered back “I’ve got more than enough scratches for one day-” “I’ve got scratches too!” Rin interjected. Miku let out a small laugh, before speaking up again. “Forgive me if I’m wrong but I am positive I’ve got more!” She shifted the cat into of her arms, before lining it up with both of Rin’s that were draped over her knees, Miku’s arm having noticeably more scratches than both of Rin’s arms combined.

Rin sighed, defeated smile on her lips as she rolled her neck. “Yeeaaah alright alright, I’ll handle the bath.” “Damn right you will.” Miku chimed, chuckling as she pet the orange squirming kitty in her arms, while fondly watching her resigned yellow-haired friend.

They sat a while, enjoying each other’s company, along with the slowly changing shades of the sky and playing with the energetic cat. Eventually Miku sighed, bundling the cat up in her arms. “Wanna head home?” She languidly turned her head, seeing her friend reluctantly sigh and slump herself. “Yeah alright, I’ll grab the groceries.” Rin smiled as she got up and stretched her arms, before grabbing the bags and helping her blue-haired friend to her feet.

On the way home Miku and Rin chatted and chuckled between themselves, discussing what they should do with the cat as the sun ever so slowly set over the horizon, painting the sky in warm shades of deep orange.
