Obi-Wan knew letting Rex go to Coruscant was difficult for Cody, both as a commanding officer and a brother. Strategically, it was a risk, letting someone that Vader, as Anakin was now known, was so familiar be right there on Coruscant, in the heart of the Sith’s territory. But Rex was smart and thanks to Ahsoka and Obi-Wan’s connections, as well as those Fox and the rest of the Guard had cultivated during the war, they had a formidable network to keep him apprised of danger. As a brother, Cody hated letting his beloved little brother go right into the heart of danger. Obi-Wan was proud of Cody for being able to let Rex go with such minimal argument.

“I know, darling,” Obi-Wan soothed the night Rex left, carding his fingers through Cody’s hair as Cody curled so close to him that it was difficult to tell where one of them ended and the other began.

Cody took a shuddering breath. “I hate it. I hate it so much.

Pressing a kiss to Cody’s hair, Obi-Wan assured, “I understand.”

Cody buried his face in Obi-Wan’s sleep tunic.

“We’re only going to be able to defeat these Sith bastards together,” Cody murmured. “And that means each of us playing our part. I know that. I do. I just wish Rex didn’t think this was the part he had to play.”

That was a feeling Obi-Wan understood well.

“It’s ok to worry about him,” Obi-Wan replied. “You just can’t let that worry rule you and make decisions for you.”

Cody huffed.

“I know that too,” Cody grumbled. “And I’d never tell him he can’t help our brothers in the way he thinks best. I’m just not obligated to like it.”

Obi-Wan smiled softly and pressed another kiss to Cody’s hair.

“That is often the hardest part,” Obi-Wan agreed. “When someone we love chooses a path we don’t like, but we know we cannot prevent them from following it.”

Sighing heavily, Cody nodded.

“I know Rex is smart and capable. It’s just that during the war, he had a hell of a lot more backup in case something went wrong. And look what happened in cases where he didn’t!” Cody pointed out.

Kadavo came immediately to mind and Obi-Wan had a feeling that was the first thing Cody thought of too.

“He has a number of your brothers with him,” Obi-Wan soothed. “And Dex and Ahsoka’s friends, and Bail and his people, and more allies than we expected to have. It’s different, yes, but he isn’t there alone and without backup. He has help. And many of those people know how to contact you immediately if something does go wrong.”

Cody nodded into Obi-Wan’s chest.

“I keep reminding myself of that,” Cody mumbled.

Obi-Wan smiled and resumed carding his fingers through Cody’s hair.

“The logical answer is that we defeat the Sith as soon as possible so he’s safe,” Obi-Wan pointed out.

Cody’s lips quirked into a rueful half smile. “I like the way you think.”

Obi-Wan nodded. “I rather thought you would.”

The next morning, Cody rose and went to work. The evil of the Sith didn’t stop just because Cody was worried about Rex. After all, as Obi-Wan had pointed out, the best way to make sure Rex was safe was to defeat the Sith.

He took his seat at the council table and looked at his fellow commanders.

“What updates from the field?”
