Chapter Text
***Sean’s POV***
“I can’t believe they shot me with rubber bullets.” Sean commented as he sat at the table in the spice shot.
It had been a shock to find out that he had been possessed by the spirit responsible for the Jack the Ripper killings over a hundred years ago in London. And in order to rid him of the spirit, Nick, Hank and Wu had tricked the spirit into believing Sean was being killed by shooting him with rubber bullets. Nick and Hank had headed off with a newly returned Trubel to check out what was going on at Nick’s house, with Wu joining them a short while later. It had left Monroe and Rosalee to explain to Sean what had been happening.
“Well, we had to make whatever was inside you think he was really dying.” Rosalee told him gently, placing a cup of tea in front of him. “Otherwise, he might not have left you.”
“And if it really was Jack the Ripper, he was from the 1800s, so he would have known about guns but not rubber bullets.” Monroe added. “So, he would have thought he was really getting shot.”
“I was really getting shot.” Sean told them, rubbing his chest where the bullets had hit him. “Those things hurt.”
“Take this, you’ll feel better.” Monroe said, pouring a small jar of…something into the cup of tea.
“I’m just glad he bought it.” Rosalee commented. “And went back to wherever he came from.”
Sean picked up the cup and took a sip, wincing at the taste.
“Wherever the hell that is.” Monroe added.
The spirit may be gone, but Sean still had to live with its actions. “I still killed three women.” Sean said quietly, unable to keep the guilt out of his voice.
“That wasn’t you.” Rosalee assured him.
Sean put the cup down. “I’m charged with finding the killer. I’ve got half the precinct looking for him.”
“Well, they never found the real Jack the Ripper.” Rosalee reminded him.
Sean sighed. “They’re gonna stop until they find somebody.”
Monroe looked at Rosalee. “That’s a problem.” He said before looking at Sean. “You need a somebody.”
Was Monroe suggesting they find somebody else to take the fall? Even if that were so, who?
***Lorelei’s POV***
It was late. Adalind and Olivia were asleep in their respective beds, while Lorelei was still out in the living room with Bud. Bud had fallen asleep in his armchair, baseball bat across his lap. Lorelei however was still very much awake. As tired as she was, she couldn’t sleep. Not even receiving a call from Rosalee, letting her know that Sean was no longer possessed had any bearing on Lorelei’s ability to sleep. Instead, Lorelei was sitting on the couch, staring mindlessly at the tv. A knock sounded at the door; startling Bud awake. Nick called out, letting Bud know it was him. The eisbiber hurried to the door and opened it, letting Nick, Hank, and surprisingly Trubel into the house.
“Trubel.” Bud said in surprise as the newest Grimm entered the house.
“Hey Bud, Hey Lorelei.” She greeted them. “Bud, I like your bat.”
“Ah, thanks. When did you get back?” Bud asked Trubel. “I mean, uh, welcome back. It’s good to see you, like really good to see you.”
“What’s going on?” Lorelei asked, standing up. If they were here, that meant, something had happened.
Nick turned to Lorelei; a look of sorrow written on his face. “I, uh, gotta tell you something.” He told her. Nick glanced over his shoulder at the others before grabbing her arm and leading her away from them.
“What is it?”
Nick let out a breath. “Mom’s dead. The Royals killed her.”
Lorelei stared at him. “Mom’s…are you sure? What would she be doing in Portland?”
Nick nodded, tears shining in his eyes. “I’m sure. I’m guessing Juliette is working with the Royals and lured her back into town.”
A numb feeling came over Lorelei’s body. Although she didn’t have the relationship that Nick did with her, Lorelei did love her mother. She had been happy she was alive and hoped that one day she would be able to meet her first born grandchild. And now…that would never happen. “Juliette did this?” Lorelei asked faintly.
“I don’t know for sure, but it’s the only thing that makes sense.”
Lorelei looked up at her brother, one thought coming to mind. “Where’s Diana? Mom wouldn’t have come without her.”
Nick shook his head. “I don’t know. I assume the Royals took her.”
God, Lorelei felt sick. Juliette, a woman she considered like a sister was responsible for her mother’s death. She had worked with a family that had caused so much pain. And worse, their mother’s sacrifice was in vain because the Royals had gotten their hands on Diana. Something they had been trying to stop from happening.
Lorelei suddenly became aware of Nick gently shaking her shoulder, calling her name. Her vision focused and she looked at him. “Are you going to be alright?” He asked her.
Lorelei nodded. “Yeah.” She said faintly. “Are you?”
Nick shrugged. “I don’t know.” He stepped away and turned back to Bud. “Where’s Adalind?”
“She’s asleep.” Bud replied.
“I need to talk to her.” Nick said, as Adalind came walking out to the living room.
“About what?” She asked, looking confused.
Nick approached her. “The Royals have Diana.”
Adalind’s eyes widened. “What? I thought she was with your mother?” Adalind asked.
“My mother’s dead.”
Adalind’s eyes widened more, if possible. “Kelly’s dead?”
“Oh no.” Bud said from behind them.
“I’m gonna kill whoever did this.” Nick told Lorelei and Adalind.
“That would be Kenneth.” Adalind advised him. “He took over when the King recalled Viktor to Vienna, and Rispoli, he’s in charge of the Verrat.”
Hank stepped forward. “Where were the Royals staying?” Hank asked her.
“At the penthouse at the Hotel Deluxe. Do you think they’re still there?”
Nick glanced at Hank. “Oh, they couldn’t have known they’d get Diana tonight.” Nick said.
“Nick, I want her back.”
“Can you get into the penthouse?” Hank asked her.
Lorelei glanced back at Adalind. Adalind thought about it. “I think I still have the key.”
“Get ready. We need you to drop something off.” Nick told her.
Adalind headed off to get dressed, as Trubel stepped forward, looking surprised. “She’s pregnant?” She asked Nick.
Nick looked at Trubel. “It’s mine.” He informed her, and Trubel’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Nick, the Royals aren’t gonna stop. They could come looking for you at Monroe and Rosalee’s.” Hank said, looking at Nick in concern before he started heading to the door.
“He’s right. They want you dead.” Trubel said.
Bud stepped closer to them. “We need to warn Monroe and Rosalee.”
“I’ll call them.” Trubel said, but Nick stopped her.
“No. Bring them back here.” He instructed her before looking at Bud. “Do you have any plastic wrap?”
***Adalind’s POV***
When Adalind arrived back at Bud’s house, she found that Bud and Trubel had arrived back with Monroe and Rosalee already. “Where’s Lorelei?” Adalind asked, joining them at the table.
“In her room. She uh, hasn’t really said much.” Bud answered, placing a tray with tea, cups and whatever else was needed for it. Plus pie. Bud’s wife made really good pie.
Adalind nodded. She knew that Lorelei barley knew her mother; she’d been a baby when she had left all those years ago, but she could imagine how she was feeling. Like Adalind, she had a somewhat complicated relationship with her mother. However, despite whatever her feelings had been, the loss still hurt.
“I can’t believe Kelly got killed.” Monroe commented, pouring some more tea into his own cup. “How did that happen?”
“I feel so bad for Nick, and for Lorelei.” Rosalee said, sitting back in her chair, arms crossed. She looked at Trubel. “Were you with him when he found his mother’s body?”
“Yeah, but it wasn’t a body.”
Everyone stared at her. “What?” Monroe asked in surprise.
“They put her head in a box for him to find.” Trubel informed them.
“Oh my god.” Rosalee said. “Animals.”
Adalind had to agree. That was morbid. Poor Nick, it was a horrible way find out about his mother’s death. The Royals were truly twisted. The others seemed to have similar reactions.
“Nick and Lorelei are gonna needs us now, more than ever.” Bud said, looking distressed.
“And Juliette.” Trubel said. “Wait, shouldn’t she be here?”
Everyone looked at her again. “Nick didn’t tell you?” Rosalee asked her.
“There were some side effects to him getting his Grimm back.” Adalind advised her.
Trubel looked her up and down. “Yeah. I remember.” She said, before looking across the Monroe, a questioning look on her face.
“Juliette’s a hexenbiest.” Monroe told her.
Trubel’s jaw dropped. “No way.”
“She torched the trailer, and almost killed Monroe.” Rosalee filled her in.
“And me.” Adalind added, even though she knew no one really cared about that. If Adalind was honest, she did kind of deserve the hate. But she did what she thought she had to do to get Diana back.
“I can’t believe this.” Trubel said.
“Believe it.” Rosalee told her, anger clearly simmering below the surface of the fuschbau.
Monroe suddenly sat up, hushing them as he looked in the direction of the door. “Somebody’s out there.” He whispered, quietly getting up from the table and heading towards the front door.
The others got up as well, with Trubel pulling out a machete. Monroe peered out the door, his shoulders losing some of their tension as he sighed in relief. “It’s Nick and Hank.” He told them, unlocking the door and opening to allow the two detectives to enter.
They headed into the living room, and Adalind followed. “Juliette’s a hexenbiest?” Trubel asked Nick.
“Yeah. And she’s with the Royals.”
“That bitch has my kid.” Adalind asked angrily.
“She helped the Royals take her.” Was Hank’s answer. “We’re going to need you on this.” This was directed toward Trubel.
“You got it.” Trubel said, sheathing her machete. “Never should have left.”
Nick’s phone rang and he answered it. “Wu, I’m putting you on speaker.”
Sergeant Wu’s voice came through the phone. “I triangulated her cell. She’s in North Plains, outside our jurisdiction.”
“I don’t care.” Was Nick’s reply.
“I didn’t think so.” Wu replied in return. “Big gated compound. Only one road in about a mile off the highway.”
“You got an address?”
“422 Mountain Estate Drive. I’ll meet you there.”
Nick shook his head. “No, not this time. It’s too risky. I don’t want you getting pulled down with what I have to do.” He said, before hanging up the phone.
Hank looked at Nick. “Considering who’s in the compound, my guess is it’s going to be heavily guarded.”
“How are we going in?” Trubel asked.
Nick looked back at her. “Quietly. We need some things from the shop.”
“I’m coming with you.” Monroe said.
“Me too.” Rosalee added.
“Well, someone needs to stay here with Adalind and Bud just in case.” Nick told them.
Bud stepped forward. “Yeah, yeah, that’s a really good idea, ‘cause if anybody does come here, it’s just me and Adalind, Lorelei, and Olivia, and, and you know the little guy.”
“Lorelei’s still here?” Nick asked.
“Uh yeah, she’s in her room. Hasn’t come out. I should probably check on her, now that I think about it.”
“I’ll stay.” Rosalee volunteered. “I know Lorelei hasn’t been feeling well. It’s probably better to let her rest.”
Nick nodded before heading to the door followed by Trubel, and Hank. Adalind watched as Monroe and Rosalee said goodbye to each other before he also left. Once he had, Rosalee locked the door behind him before turning back to Bud and Adalind. “How are you feeling?” She gently asked Adalind.
Adalind sighed. “Tired, angry, scared.” She said, before turning around and heading back to her own room. Her daughter had been so close, and now…she wondered if she would ever see her again.
Adalind hadn’t been able to fall asleep, so she had moved back to the living room to lie down on the couch. After falling asleep for a while, she woke up to find Rosalee had taken over watch for Bud, who had moved to another armchair. “Has anyone checked on Lorelei?” Adalind asked slowly sitting up.
Rosalee looked at her. “I check in on her before. She seems to be asleep. She didn’t stir when I looked in.”
Adalind nodded. A couple of minutes later, she heard a door open, and Lorelei came walking into the living room. Rosalee stood up. “Hey, how you going?”
Lorelei’s face was pale, and Adalind could see that her eyes were red and puffy, no doubt from crying. “Yeah, been better.” The younger woman replied with a shrug as she came to sit beside Adalind on the couch.
Rosalee suddenly stood up and rushed over to the door, peering out of it. “They’re back.” She told them as she opened the door. Adalind watched as the others filed into the house. Nick’s eyes settling on Adalind.
“What happened?” Bud asked.
“They got away.” Trubel answered.
“All of them?” Bud asked.
“They had a helicopter.” Hank told him as Nick approached Adalind.
“You didn’t get Diana?” Adalind asked Nick, needing him to confirm it.
“I’m sorry.”
Adalind let out a shaky breath, feeling disappointed. She was really hoping they would be able to get Diana back.
“What about Juliette?” Bud asked Nick. “Was she there?”
Nick looked at him, however Trubel answered for him. “She got away too.”
“Oh Nick.” Bud said sadly.
Nick turned around to face the others. “Go back home now.” He told them.
“What about me?” Adalind asked. What was going to happen to her? She couldn’t stay at Bud’s forever. “Where am I supposed to go?”
Nick looked back at her. “Stay here with Bud. Until we wrap all this up.” With a sigh, Nick turned around and headed towards the door.
Hank called out after him. “Nick, you go home. I’ll handle the Captain.”
Nick didn’t say anything. He just nodded and left. Slowly, one by one, the others left as well. And then there was only Adalind, Bud, and Lorelei. However, Lorelei stood up, moving towards the door. “Um. I, uh, need to clear my head. I’m gonna go for a drive. Do you mind if I leave Olivia here?” She asked Bud.
Bud nodded. “Uh, yeah, of course. We’ll keep an eye on her. Do you know how long you’ll be?”
Lorelei shook her head as she grabbed her purse from near the door, placing her phone in it and fishing out her keys. “No. But, uh, there’s formula in the kitchen if I’m not back before she wakes in the morning.”
And like her brother, she left without another word.
***Lorelei’s POV***
Lorelei spent the rest of the night driving around. It was just before dawn when she pulled up at the home she shared with her husband and daughter. Thankfully, Sean didn’t appear to be home. He had tried calling her around midnight, but she hadn’t answered. So, he wouldn’t worry, she had sent him a message letting him know she was fine. No doubt by now he knew about her mother and the groups failure to get Diana back.
Lorelei didn’t feel like talking to or interacting with anybody. She just wanted to be alone to deal with her emotions. And she had a lot. Upon hearing about her mother’s death, Lorelei had found herself feeling numb. Sure, she had cried, hidden away in her room at Bud’s. But overall, she had felt numb. It was only after finding out they hadn’t been able to get Diana back when Lorelei had started to feel the floodgates holding back her emotions start to crack. She felt trapped, desperate to get away from everyone. Fear, anger, rage, sadness, grief, hatred, so many emotions that had been building up over the past week. It felt like everything was crashing down on her at once.
As Lorelei entered the house, Molly came running up to her followed closely by Daisy. She briefly greeted the pets, locking the door behind her as she trudged towards the living room, setting the alarm again before she dropped down onto the couch. Letting out a loud sigh, Lorelei put her head in her hands, covering her face, as tears started to pour down her face and a sob erupted. Lorelei had barely begun to let go when she was interrupted by the doorbell ringing. She looked up. Who the hell was visiting at this time of the morning? Feeling pissed off her breakdown was being interrupted, Lorelei got up and stalked angrily over the panel to see who was standing at their door through the security camera. A man was standing at the door. He seemed tall, though not as tall as Sean. He was dressed in all black and seemed to have dark blonde hair. It looked like he was carrying something, something large and covered by blanket. “What do you want?” Lorelei asked through the intercom, as she slid her gun out from her waistband.
The man glanced towards the camera. “I am looking for Sean Renard.” He said in an accented voice. “It’s important that I see him.”
“What do you want with him?”
The man paused. “Are you Lorelei? His wife?”
Lorelei glared at the man through the camera, even though he couldn’t see her. “And what if I am?”
The man glanced behind, stepping closer to the camera. “My name is Meisner, and I come bearing an important package.”
Lorelei froze. She recognised that name. He was the one who worked with Sean to get Adalind and Diana out of Vienna and then Europe. What was he doing here? “What’s the package?” Lorelei got out, her throat thick and she felt a new emotion bubbling up within her. Hope.
Meisner stepped even closer to the camera, glancing behind him again, before he lifted the blanket up slightly off what he was holding. Lorelei caught a glimpse of blond hair. No, it couldn’t be. “Wait there.” Lorelei told him before dashing towards the door, trying to slow her breathing down.
Gun still gripped tightly in her hand, ready to use it in case she was wrong, Lorelei opened the door and stepped back, allowing Meisner to enter. Once he was in, she quickly shut the door and locked it before turning to face the man.
“Thank you. I can’t afford for anyone to see us. If anyone knew she was here…” He trailed off, completely removing the blanket covering the small child he was holding.
Lorelei stared at the small child, a little girl, who looked to be about three or four years old. It shouldn’t be possible. She wasn’t that much older than Olivia. But Lorelei knew. It was her. Diana.
