Death is Proof that Something was Alive

Summary:

Definitelynottober/Poemtober day 31: under dying leaves

Work Text:

It was never meant to last
Nothing is, really, but the lifespan here was
Unnaturally shortened

It was never meant as a surprise, of course
The very server itself was named
A call for a life in peril

Day 1, they’re told revival has a cost
And that price will only ever rise
Until it’s too high to pay

No wonder people rushed to make friends
Or barring that, quick enemies
So much to do and no time at all

Deaths came, and coins went
Scraping together in concert
To keep everyone together as long as they could

And yet with nothing that could withstand
The ravages of time
They built so much that will outlive them

Homes, games, stores, competitions
Stations for fate coin acquisition, graveyards in advance
Even just space to spend time with each other

No matter the tricks Fate wove for them
No matter how high the cost of revival
A community they were determined to remain

Even in the pillager’s destruction they were united
All dead save three - Historian, Admin, Wanderer
And still had enough to bring back all but one (and the killers)

It took the very borders of the world itself
Tightening down life to a single chunk
To force them to face the end

And as the last leaves falls from the trees
Settling on the graves they didn’t have time to fill
All is quiet and content in memory and memoriam

Nothing is meant to last forever
And sometimes it is the fact that something ends
That allows it to have truly lived
