Work Text:
Inquisitor Herah Adaar, by pure accident, adopted a ram.
During one of the trips to the Hinterlands, Herah had met One-Eyed Jimmy, who had asked her to find his lucky ram, Lord Woolsley, who had gotten so spooked by the Breach that he had ran away. The Inquisitor had immediately agreed to help, and while her main objective had been clearing the roads of bandits and closing the remaining rifts in the Hinterlands, she had had no problem organizing a detour to locate the runaway ram.
The thing was, Herah loved animals. Her parents kept dogs, chickens, and goats on their little farm, and Herah had been taking care of all them ever since she could remember, so when she had heard that someone's pet had gotten lost, offering to help look for it had been the reasonable thing to do.
The team's initial plans had to be adjusted a little bit to fit in the new detour, but Herah, with the help of Scout Harding, managed to come up with a solution that wouldn't prolong their stay in the Hinterlands too much.
Cassandra wasn't particularly happy with the Inquisitor's decision, since she thought closing the rifts as soon as possible and then going back to Skyhold to decide what their next step would be should be the priority. Cole, on the other hand, was elated. He immediately lit up at the idea of helping One-Eyed Jimmy find his wayward ram, and the rogue's enthusiasm was genuinely contagious. Dorian, who also agreed to accompany Herah on the trip, was mostly indifferent towards the whole idea. While he wasn't exactly thrilled at the idea of walking through the woods and all the mud, he was definitely enjoying the sunshine, a pleasant break from the ever present snow blanketing Emprise du Lion any time the Inquisitor traveled there.
Herah, Cole, Dorian, and Cassandra looked for Lord Woolsley for a few days, which delayed their plans a little bit more than Herah had initially expected. At the end of the last day they planned to devote to finding the wayward animal, when the Inquisitor was slowly starting to lose hope in locating Lord Woolsley, she had spotted a ram with a beautiful white and golden pelt grazing on top of a small hill. Since its coloring matched the description they had been given, Herah immediately approached it, convinced she finally found One-Eyed Jimmy's ram. Once she was close enough, she immediately started talking to the animal, letting it get used to her presence, and it took more than an hour of waiting and promises of food before her patience was rewarded. When the ram finally approached Herah and sniffed her outstretched hand briefly, the mage felt herself smiling, ecstatic that she was able to help One-Eyed Jimmy.
As it turned out a short while later, the ram Herah befriended was not, in fact, Lord Woolsley, so the mage left it to graze in peace where she found it.
They encountered the actual Lord Woolsley by accident a few hours later, when they were passing the cabin where Herah had first met Blackwall. Cole ended up talking to Lord Woolsley, who was surprisingly chatty, the whole way back to Redcliffe, and the happiness on One-Eyed Jimmy's face when he spotted his ram was gratitude enough for the job done. Herah had no idea if Jimmy was aware that Lord Woolsley was a spirit or not, but she decided to leave them be.
On their way back to Skyhold, however, they stumbled upon the ram Herah had befriended earlier, and once she looked more closely Herah could spot the obvious differences between this ram and Lord Woolsley, which led to an unexpected outcome. Didn't matter how much all of them tried to discourage the animal from following them, it was as stubborn as it was gorgeous, and it ended up joining them anyway. Herah was happy to acquire a new friend, and the ram must have sensed that, because soon it started to follow her everywhere, including sleeping in her tent.
Some people of Skyhold were puzzled by the arrival of the keep's newest resident, some were distressed, and more than once Herah and her Inner Circle had to explain that the ram, which Herah named Sir Yarnton, was not to be touched, but the mage got used to his presence very quickly.
After a few weeks no one was surprised to see Sir Yarnton wandering around Skyhold anymore.
What was more important, however, Ambassador Josephine Montilyet, who Herah was in a relationship with, found Sir Yarnton adorable.
When the ram wasn't following Herah, he would from time to time wander into Josephine's office only to settle next to her desk, where she had thrown a couple of ridiculously plush pillows for him to lounge on. Whenever Herah visited during those particular instances, she would greet Josephine with a kiss, and Sir Yarnton with a pet on the head, and sometimes even a carrot to munch on.
Herah enjoyed walking into the Ambassador's office to find Josephine engrossed in her work, petting Sir Yarnton's head slowly while she was talking to Leliana or Cassandra, or when she was thinking about how to word certain letters. It was endearing, and the Inquisitor couldn't help but smile whenever she walked in on the two of them spending time in the same room.
One day, after Herah came back from a two week long trip to Emprise du Lion, she headed to the Ambassador's office right away. As expected, she found Josephine and Sir Yarnton in their usual spots. Both of them raised their heads as soon as the door opened, and the smile that appeared on Josephine's face when her eyes met Herah's, so bright and open, immediately made the mage smile back, because how could she not?
Josephine walked up to her, but just as Herah reached out to wrap her arms around the other woman, she felt a furry body fit neatly between her and Josephine, causing them to hug awkwardly with Sir Yarnton in the middle.
Herah looked down at the ram, both eyebrows raised, but Sir Yarnton didn't seem to be ashamed of his actions, not at all. He just bleated loudly, making Josephine giggle.
"He really missed you," Josephine stated, managing to maneuver around Sir Yarnton, allowing Herah to finally hug her. The mage kissed her forehead, then both cheeks, before pressing her lips to Josephine's in a slow kiss.
"I missed him, too," Herah smiled against Josephine's lips, reaching down with one hand to pet Sir Yarnton's head at the same time. "But I'm afraid he'll have to stay in the stables tonight, or with Cole, because I missed you a little bit more."
Josephine caressed the Inquisitor's cheekbones with her thumbs, before kissing her once more. "I could have food brought to your chambers, if you'd like."
"Only if you eat with me," Herah covered one of Josephine's hands with hers. "I'll take all the notes and reports I'd received to Leliana, ask Cole if he wouldn't mind watching Sir Yarnton tonight, and then I'll come find you. How does that sound?"
Sir Yarnton bleated in what Herah assumed was protest. "I know you don't like it, but I'll give you a bunch of tasty carrots if you go with me, I promise. You like spending time with Cole, don't you?"
"I will ask to have the food prepared, and finish reading a letter from Bann Wulff, then," Josephine walked back to her desk, while Herah nodded.
"I shouldn't be gone too long. Come on, Sir Yarnton, let's find Cole."
Cole was excited to see Sir Yarnton, and when the ram settled on Cole's bed, the rogue immediately started asking him all sorts of questions. Herah decided to leave them to it, and headed to the rookery to find Leliana, so she could get back to Josephine as soon as possible. She would just have to make it up to Sir Yarnton later. Getting him all of his favourite treats should be enough to make the ram forgive her for abandoning him.
