Work Text:
"Having a bad day?" Twyla asks as she peeks past her 1,253rd book. She had a blanket loosely wrapped around her lower half and a couple other books by her side, along with some stuffed animals. There were freaky fairy lights providing light for her reading.
Lagoona doesn't respond immediately, as she was close to wearing a hole in her hoodie sleeve the way she was chewing it. Chew stims that Twyla had suggested were proven inefficient to great white chompers, and Lagoona had gotten tired picking plastic out of her mouth, so this was her current solution. The sea monster didn't have a blanket, but she did have a comically large whale-shark plush she seemed to have in a headlock. Her legs were crossed as she sat on cushioned ground. There were also freaky fairy lights providing her light and making her scales shine.
"Lagoona, your hoodie." Twyla adds on, using her foot to bump Lagoona's head.
Lagoona pauses with her mouth full, before prying her sleeve away. "Sorry, I just- aaaand I tore it." She sighs before plucking the piece of fabric out of her mouth. "Ugh, these finals are driving me mad. My chomps are unending and I've been going through hoodies like a hermit crab goes through shells." She explains as she hugs her plush tightly. "I didn't mean to ignore you, Twyla. I'm sorry."
"It's okay. I know you can't help your chomps. I just feel bad my ideas didn't work. I didn't mean for you to cut your cheek with one of the chew stims I suggested." Twyla explains while setting her bookmark in her book, closing it and setting it by her side.
"That's okay! Don't worry about me and my face."
"I like worrying about your face."
Lagoona blinks before blushing a bit and giggling. "Well I guess I won't stop you. And I appreciate the suggestions, really. I just guess that my genetics are a bit of my enemy. My mama says that chomps are always in my family, but I don't know, mine seem pretty extreme compared to my relatives."
"Maybe you just need to take more extreme measures. Or maybe choose less breakable chews. Would silicone chews work?"
"I mean I don't think I could chomp that into pieces, so it's certainly an idea." Lagoona ponders as she sinks more into her spot. "I still can't believe Headmistress Bloodgood let you make this hidey-hole in the library."
"Everything but the books is mine, so she wasn't worried about money."
"She always seems to be worrying about money."
"I mean there is always one monster in the boo crew causing destruction somehow."
"That is... very true. Suppose we're lucky she only sends us to detention for it." Lagoona remarks with a nervous chuckle.
Twyla just smiles at the lack of chomps. "Headmistress Bloodgood is nice, and I think she's too busy dealing with the preparations of the Monster Ball. But I do love this space a lot. Now I get to be right beside my books and not worry about the crowds of monsters cramming for finals." Twyla states with a broader smile. She does pause with a squeak from Lagoona. "Sorry."
"It's okay." Lagoona assures, though she does chomp twice.
Twyla blinks once before holding her arms out. "Hug?"
Lagoona just nods as she sits up, shimmying over on her knees before relaxing in Twyla's arms and lap. The sea monster giggles as she rests her head on Twyla's collar and lets her weight relax. It was a little comedic seeing the small bookworm try to swath the bigger sea monster in her arms, but the effort was there. And it was welcomed as both monsters let out content sighs.
"I like this time together." Lagoona murmurs.
"So do I." Twyla adds on as her voice was but a whisper.
"I wish I didn't have to study."
"I think you've earned a break from studying."
"Yay." Lagoona quietly squeals, making Twyla giggle. "I love you, Twyla."
"I love you, Lagoona." Twyla repeats, smoothing Lagoona's back as the sea monster cuddles up closer. The boogeymonster had to admit that she loved not needing to worry about someone seeing her and Lagoona cuddling. She got very anxious about any attention on her. She knew that her friends were happy for the couple, but they tended to get loud when talking about the couple. At least Lagoona appreciated the quiet.
Twyla blinks with a soft snore, and she smiles when she realizes Lagoona was napping in her arms. She used her hand to turn off the freaky fairy lights, then relaxed more as the shadows overcame the two.
