Chapter Text
“Hey, Amity?”
“Hm?," the half-asleep witch answered with a tired groan, turning while claiming a little bit more of the blanket for herself.
“Do… you wanna get married?” Her voice was curious, but she asked it as if it was the most basic question to possibly ask out of the blue at eight in the morning.
It took a second for Amity to register what her girlfriend had just said, but once she did, she was wide awake in an instant, her eyes shooting open as she slowly turned back towards Luz. “HUH?” She must’ve misheard. “Do I WHAT now?”
Luz chuckled as she observed Amity’s face turning beet red in a matter of seconds - this was clearly not a conversation she expected to have first thing in the morning while still half asleep. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. I mean, generally. Don’t worry, this is not a proposal or anything.”
Her girlfriend cleared her throat in a desperate attempt to regain the slightest bit of composure. She remained quiet for a second, Luz carefully studying every little flinch of a muscle on her pretty face, her head propped up against her arm. “I… wasn’t worried," she finally managed to coax out, the redness slowly retreating to her cheeks. She’d be lying if she said that she had never thought about this before. Okay, she was thinking about this regularly. On a daily basis - and Titan, yes. There weren’t enough words on the boiling isles to describe how much she wanted to take their relationship to the next level; but she wasn’t one hundred percent sure how Luz felt about this entire thing - this was the first time they were actively discussing the topic. She’d always wanted to bring it up, but she didn’t want to risk coming off as too eager, or Titan forbid, clingy. The last thing she would ever want was to push Luz away from her.
So her plan was to play it cool first - just in case. “This was just… very unexpected… kinda out of the blue. I mean… we’re still young and…”
“No, sweet potato, like I said. This is not, I repeat, NOT, a proposal. You know darn well I’d think of a better - and cheesier - way to do THAT.”
Amity chuckled. “Sounds about right.”
“No, I mean, in general. Did you ever think of yourself in the future as a married woman?”
“Well… I mean, before you, there wasn’t really anyone I’d even considered spending the rest of my life with. And then you came into my life and, ugh, everything became so complicated all of the sudden,” she feigned an eye roll, before locking eyes with her human again, a small smile on her lips. She thought about the many wonderful times they’ve had together over the years for but the shortest of moments, before it grew into a confident, affectionate grin. “Yeah,” she said softly, slowly letting the giant wave of excitement she felt in her chest slowly leak outward, “I can definitely see us getting married.” The thought alone of calling Luz her wife felt crazy to her, crazy good. It just… sounded right. So very right. “I mean, at the end of the day, it would be a very selfless act! Think about it, little Cally needs a cool pair of aunts, right?”
Luz’ eyes immediately lit up, thinking about little Calanthe, the unexpected, yet adorable result of Hunter’s and Willow’s love. “Oh heck yeah, we’re gonna be the coolest aunts on the isles!” she giggled excitedly, “We’re always gonna have the best stories to tell. We’re gonna go on adventures. We’re gonna help people! Save families out of collapsing houses, becoming the presidents of the boiling isles…”
Amity remained silent for a moment, just observing her beloved babbling cute nonsense like she often did when she was excited. After she had finished, her girlfriend just smiled at her.
“So I take it you want to get married, too?” This was it. The moment of truth.
Her playful, quirky demeanor subtly shifted into a calm, serious, yet incredibly loving gaze. Gently, she pulled a strain of pale pink hair from Amity’s forehead and tucked it behind her pointy ear. Scooting even closer, she studied her face up close. She felt Luz’ shallow breaths against her lips, expecting her to close in any second now, desperately awaiting her beloved’s kiss, yet she kept her waiting, instead putting her face under playful, seemingly critical scrutiny, eyeing it up from top to bottom like a professor evaluating every single nook and cranny of a research object. “Hmmmm…” A mildly confused Amity smirked at her girlfriend’s dorkiness. “I think you’ll do… Gotta check again though, just to be sure.” She gave her another kiss, and another, and another. Before long, she was peppering her entire face, neck and shoulders - including the especially sensitive spot right in the crook of her neck - with little pecks, before things slowly escalated into a wild tickle fest, Amity feeling like nothing but a giggly mass of abomination goo in her beloved’s arms.
“Yeah, Blight, I think I’ll marry ya.” She finally seriously answered the question after both of them had calmed down again, coming to rest in the spoon position now; Amity felt nothing but warmth and safety with her favorite human pressed up against her back, her hand around her midsection and her melodic voice in her ear. “Really though," she whispered, before gently pressing another kiss onto the side of her neck, “I have a hard time imagining anything that could possibly make me happier. Ever.”
Trying to keep her growing excitement in check, she placed her hand on top of Luz’, absentmindedly tracing patterns over the back of her hand with the tips of her fingers. “I know, right?” She paused for just a moment, before deciding to push her a bit further. “Amity Noceda has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?”
Luz backed away a little out of surprise, slightly leaning over her, trying to reestablish eye contact with Amity. “Woah, you’d be willing to give up your family name? Amity Noceda-Blight sounds just as good to me! Or Blight-Noceda? I love it either way.”
Amity softly shook her head. “No. Blight was Odalia’s family name. I love my family - what’s left of it, anyway - but honestly, I’m more than fine with leaving this cursed name behind.” She gently squeezed Luz’ hand on her core, “Also… I’d be honored to call myself a Noceda some day. If you, Vee, and Camila will have me, that is.”
For a moment, Luz had to fight back the stray tear trying to fight its way out of the corner of her eye. “Iloveyousofrickinmuch," she whimpered with a quivering upper lip, while Amity, with a soft chuckle, wriggled herself free from her lover’s embrace just enough to roll over so that she could face her again, gently wiping away the tear that was rolling down her cheek and, just for good measure, pressing a heartfelt peck on the spot where it had been. “You know you’re already a part of our family. Mom and Vee would be over the moon if we finally made it official some day," she grinned as she pulled her into a tight embrace, ending with Amity’s face cuddled as deeply as physically possible into the crook of Luz’ neck. They just stayed like that for a few more minutes. No one said a word; all Amity could hear was Luz’ calm, steady breaths that, combined with the warmth of her beloved’s arms around her, would usually lull her back to sleep, but the little voice in her head kept whispering to her, slowly increasing in volume, louder and louder until it screamed too loud to ignore. She couldn’t put this off any longer.
“Let’s do it, then," Amity suddenly interrupted the silence with the calmest voice she could muster, trying to overplay the fact that she was about to break out into an emotional mess.
“Hmm?”
“Make it official.”
Luz’ slowly opened her eyes, finding Amity’s right beside her. “What are you saying?” Her heart immediately started to bump faster, while Amity’s features noticeably began to shiver, lashed by the overwhelming, storming sea of emotion finally fighting itself free.
“I…I’m saying that I love you, you dork. That I love everything about you. I want to grow old with you, maybe start a family. I want… this, forever. I want you, forever.”
“Amity…”
“I… I want to love you for the rest of my life, Luz. I’ve never been so sure about anything in my entire life. Why wait any longer? We… we can get married under the grom tree, tomorrow, or maybe next week. We can take time off work, spend our honeymoon in the human realm. I…”
“Amity," Luz whispered, gently placing her hand on Amity’s cheek, wiping away the tears that were rolling down her cheek with the pad of her thumb, while her eyes locked on the witch’s, practically overflowing with nothing but pure love and affection. “I want to marry you, too," she whispered. “So badly. And I will, soon. But… this is one of the most important things we’ll ever do. Maybe the most important day of our entire lives. And even though I already feel like it can’t come soon enough, I think it would be best if we took the time to actually plan it, don’t you think?” Amity nodded, wiping away more tears as rationality slowly reclaimed her. “Besides, you know I’m a sappy dork who’s into all that romantic junk," she mumbled with a sly grin, “and I know for a fact that you are, as well.”
“Guilty as charged," Amity chuckled, leaning into Luz’ loving embrace.
“I promise, it will be soon. We just need… a little more time. Besides, I want to properly propose to you, too. If you’re fine with me doing the proposal, that is.”
The corner of Amity’s mouth shot up, drawing a crooked smile on her lips. “Doesn’t asking me for approval beforehand kinda go against the idea of a proposal? You know I’m gonna say yes, and I know that you’re going to ask me, so I won’t be surprised…”
“Amity Blight, I’m speechless. Flabbergasted, even!” she whined with a fake, overly dramatic voice, “you should know me better by now. You know darn well that I’m a romantic ninja. You won’t see me coming, and when you do, it’ll already be too late," her voice suddenly shifted to a dark, almost menacing tone as she closed in on her heavily blushing girlfriend, playfully baring her teeth. “Before you know what’s happening, you’ll have a ring on your finger. And then you’re stuck with me - forever," she whispered.
“I can’t wait," was all Amity could breathe before her ability to speak was taken from her, drowned in a blissful sea of kisses.
She really couldn't wait any longer, but she would bear the suspense if that meant that eventually, they'd have the most unforgettable day of their entire lives.
