Broken But Fixable (Hiatus)

Summary:

Izumi is living on her own after her father, a successful support technician and engineer, and her mother, a known lawyer when it came to cases against heroes, were killed in an explosion. Chapter 1: Breaking

Chapter Text

As soon as the bell rang I darted out of the classroom. I dodged as many people as I could, snaking my way towards the doors. Right before I got to the doors to the outside of the school I was stopped by a teacher.

“Deku, you know not to run in the halls,” the man said.

“Y-yes sir,” I said, going outside and looking back as I took off towards the edge of town.

Right as the tall cityscape started to become more apartments and houses I felt a hand grab my collar and toss me into the last alley before safety.

“Fucking hell Deku? Did you actually think you could escape us, you useless waste of space?” Bakugou laughed, kicking me in the stomach.

“Ha, look at her, she can’t even get up from such a small hit,” one of his cronies chuckled.

“Ya know, you’ve gotten better at running, but you’re still just weaker in every single sense of the term,” Bakugou laughed, hitting me with one of his smaller explosions. “This isn’t even fun anymore. You used to try to fight back, get away, but now you just lay down and take your beatings,” he growled, kicking me right where he just hit me with an explosion.

“Man, this is boring, let’s go do something actually fun,” his other crony said.

“Too bad Deku seems to have finally learned her lesson. That someone from the bottom could never hope to reach the top,” Bakugou sighed, walking away with his cronies.

Once they were a safe distance away I got up and dusted myself off. I walked out and made my way out of the city to the plot of woods my family owned. While it was technically in my grandmother’s name, she lived on the other side of Japan, so I lived alone in it. Well, I wasn’t fully alone. My dad built an AI that helped run the house. It couldn’t do much but it could keep the house running, at least it was until I upgraded it. I made my way to the workshop and turned it on to the sound of machines powering up and computers running.

Going to the desk I grabbed the microphone I had and turned it on while I went to the device that I was working on.

“RUI, start recording,” I called out, getting a beep in response. “Izumi Midoriya, entry 1573 of Project 142 aka, Project Mini. The device is fully built and ready for testing with emergency protocols being activated. Test number fifteen in 3  2  1,” I said, picking up from where I left off at the device I built. It was a small circular device with a glass plate on the front. I watched as it started to glow a white blue color and prepared to hit the emergency stop button as the glow intensified until settling. “Device seems to be intact, running diagnostics now,” I said, activating the computer it was hooked up to. “Power is holding steady at 3 gigajoules per second, slightly above expected compared to the larger versions making me believe that it has a different curve between sizes than theorized.” I smiled as I looked at it. “Still, this proves that it is possible to miniaturize the ARC reactor down and have it not lose all of its structural integrity. End entry,” I said as RUI beeped.

I looked over to my computer as it started to go off. I went and answered the call.

Hey Izumi, ” a man with brown hair, glasses, and a goatee said.

“Mr. Shield, I was actually about to call you,” I said, smiling.

Oh, about what? ” he asked.

“I did it.”

Did what? ” he asked, slightly concerned.

I held up the mini arc reactor and smirked at the camera.

Izumi, is that what I think it is? ” he asked, his face falling slightly.

“A fully functioning and structurally stable miniature arc reactor,” I said.

How? Wait, you knew about it? ” he asked.

“I was looking through dad’s old files on his designs just to kinda figure out what he was working on. I found this one, as well as the bet you two made,” I said, smirking

Even now he’s proving me wrong, even if it’s through you, ” Mr. Shield chuckled. “ Well, I guess that means my reason for calling now has a second purpose. I wanted to let you know that a package will be arriving soon at your house. I think you’ll like it.

“What package?” I asked, right as the doorbell rang.

I think that’s it. Just remember what I said previously, ” he said, hanging up.

“What he said previously?” I muttered, going to the front door and opening it.

“Surprise!” a blonde girl with glasses yelled, jumping in place.

“Melissa!” I yelled, engulfing her in a hug. “Wh-what are you doing here? I thought you had another month before school let out.”

“Technically I did, however they let me leave early once this came in,” she said, holding up a manilla folder with the UA crest on it.

“No way, did you get in?” I asked.

“I haven’t opened it yet, I wanted to open it with you,” she said, smiling.

“Let’s go,” I said, dragging her into the living room and the two of us plopped onto the couch.

“Alright, here we go,” she said, opening it and pulling out a small disk and setting it on the table.

Hello, if you don’t know I’m Power Loader, head of the support department,” a hologram of the hero said coming from the device. Melissa Shield, you took the recommendation exam for the Support Course with your father giving you one. For the written exam you scored a 94%, the highest score for one who doesn’t have an intelligence quirk as well as second highest overall by just a single percentage. As for the recommendation exam, you not only proved to understand the exam, but with the work you showed me it was clear you had the ability to back it up. So, welcome to UA’s support course class 1-F. I can’t wait to have you in my class.

“You did it!” I said, looking at her as the hologram turned off.

“Yes!” Melissa yelled, pulling me into a hug.

I felt myself melt into it and enjoy it in a way I knew I shouldn’t have. Then, she unexpectedly pulled away before grabbing my face and pulling me into a kiss.

“Hmmph!?”

After a moment she pulled away.

“I’m sorry,” she quickly said. “I should have asked a-hmph!”

I quickly pulled her into another kiss.

“I thought you were straight,” I said after I released her lips from mine.

“I’m as straight as a wet noodle,” she chuckled.

“So, I’m taking it you like me too,” I said.

“Hmm, maybe,” she said, smirking.

I looked at her unimpressed before both of us started to laugh.

“Yes, I’ve had a crush on you for a few years now. It’s just been difficult since I was on I-Island and only ever got to see you when you would visit or dad needed to go meet with a hero about equipment. I didn’t want to try a long distance relationship, so I decided that if I got to UA I would ask you out, but in my excitement I kinda forgot all that and just kissed you,” she admitted.

“Well, since you made it, where are you going to be staying?” I asked.

“If you’re asking me to stay with you the answer will be no sadly, dad got me a small apartment not too far from here or UA to stay at. I’m pretty sure he already knew that I passed since he told me that he had a place for me to stay,” she chuckled.

“Well, before you go to your apartment, I wanna show you something,” I said, standing up.

“Lead the way.”

I went into the lab and to the computer and held up the arc reactor.

“Wait, is that what I think it is?” she asked.

“A miniaturized arc reactor. Just like my dad theorized. Now, if only I knew someone to help me patent it,” I said.

“Done, tomorrow after school,” she said.

“Perfect,” I said, putting it down. “This will be the first patent of my own and not just what I got from dad,” I said, looking at the patents that were all now mine on the wall.

“Have they ever figured out what happened to them?” Melissa asked.

“No, the case officially went cold a year ago. My thing is, I don’t think they wanted to solve the case. I looked into it a bit and it seemed as if the only thing they had to go on was a single image with a blur hitting the boat. They say that it must’ve been a malfunction in the engine and caused the whole boat to explode since they couldn’t find any bodies or even debris for that matter. Still, it wasn’t an accident,” I declared.

“Well, Miss Detective, don’t focus on it too much. Live your life a little and look towards the future not the past,” she said, wrapping her arms around me.

“Fine.”

We spent the rest of the week hanging out, after I got the patent for the miniature arc reactor I hung it up next to dad’s. I also had her help me with a device I thought of for heroes who are melee fighters, but don’t have much range. It was meant to just knock them down, but using the arc reactor to power it made it a bit more powerful than I wanted and turned it into a laser. Making a way to adjust the power we figured out that it could be just a bright light, a powerful blast that could knock things around, a weak laser that could slightly scorch things, and a powerful laser that can cut through steel or just blast a hole in it. After a few tests we figured out we could possibly use it to stabilize flight with boots giving most of the propulsion. We decided to spend the next few weeks working on boots.

Then, one day at school my whole life changed.

“Now then, next year will be your final year here, so you might want to start thinking about what you want to do for a living and where you want to go,” the teacher said. “Who am I kidding, all of you want to be heroes,” he laughed.

“Don’t try to give the others false hope, I’m the only one who’s gonna be a hero from this school by making it to UA,” Bakugou chuckled.

“Ah, right, Midoriya, you were also talking about going there too right,” the teacher said, smirking at me before going to the desk.

“Hah? What the fuck are you thinking about going to UA, Deku?” Bakugou asked, walking over towards my desk as the teacher ignored it. “You think your worthless, quirkless ass could make it to UA’s hero course?”

“No, I-I’m planning on g-going to the s-support course,” I stammered.

“You think you’re good enough to make things for top heroes?” he asked, picking me up by the collar.

“W-who knows?”

“Don’t fucking apply,” he yelled, tossing me to the ground. “I don’t need them to see your quirkless application and think I’m worthless like you just because I went to the same school,” he said, kicking me in the gut. “You see, there are stories about those who rose up from shitty places, leaving rejects and extras behind them as they went to the top. That’s my fucking story, the perfection made for me. That means you ,” he said, punctuating it with a kick to my gut, “and all the other rejects here, need to know their place and stay out of my way as I go to the top. I’ll be the number one hero, with the perfect quirk, perfect back story, and perfect rise to the top with no one like you getting in my fucking way,” he said, stomping down on my arm. “Understand?” he asked, in an eerily happy tone.

I nodded as much as I could without crying out in pain.

“Still, what else would I expect from a defect like yourself,” he continued. “Your parents hated you so much, they decided the best way was for your father to make a boat explode, killing everyone there just to get away from you.”

W-what did he just say? I asked, my head beginning to pound.

“Instead of just dropping you off a bridge like they should’ve, they became killers ,” he chuckled.

“You don’t know a fucking thing about them!” I yelled, turning around and slamming my fist into his face with as much force as I could. While I wasn’t as jacked as him, since I worked with moving metals I had more than enough strength to send him off me.

Quickly getting up before anyone could react I ran out of the classroom and went to find a place to hide knowing I couldn’t get home before he found me. I went into the gym since it was empty before a hand grabbed me from behind and slammed me into the brick wall.

“Fucking Deku, think you could hit me and get away with it?” Bakugou asked, blood coming from his nose and mouth. He kneed me in the gut before slamming his knee into my face. “I think I need to teach you that you don’t belong in this world, any part of you,” he said, putting his hands right on my right shoulder before releasing a large explosion with both of them at once.

My ears started ringing right as my vision faded I felt another explosion to my chest.
