Work Text:
“Willkommen in Österreich!” the flight attendant said with a radiant smile and Dean just stared at her, not having a clue what she said. The words sounded like English, but made no sense. They could have been Japanese for all he knew. That was the first clue that something wasn’t right.
He wasn’t a good flier and he hated that he had to go overseas for work, but he couldn’t have been so out of it to make everything seem off. It was like he landed on a different planet. Everyone spoke this weird language that sounded like English, but wasn’t, everything was clean and people were smiling. Glancing at a random newspaper sold at one of the airport shops confirmed his suspicions.
This was definitely not Australia.
“Excuse me! Excuse me, sir?” He tried to stop the first person that moved past him. The guy stopped and gave him a quizzical look. “Where am I?”
“You’re in Austria. Vienna Airport… Are you alright?” The man reached for him as Dean stumbled, feeling lightheaded. Austria? No, no, he wasn’t supposed to land in Austria, he was supposed to land in Australia! How the hell did he manage to make this mistake?
He must have said it outloud, because the guy chuckled before pulling up an oops face. “You might not believe it, but it happens to a lot of people. Come, I’ll show you who you can talk to about this and we could get you back on the plane ASAP.”
Two hours later, Dean was back on the plane, this time hopefully heading in the right direction. It even turned out it was cheaper for him this way than if he had bought a direct ticket.
„Entschuldigen Sie, sind Sie Dean Winchester?“ A flight attendant addressed him and he stared at her for a moment before snapping out of it. "What was that? I only caught my name?"
The woman chuckled. "I am sorry. I was asking if you were Dean Winchester?"
"Yeah, that's me?"
"Excellent. If you would come with me, please."
Dean got out of his seat before he even managed to ask if everything was alright. She assured him that it was, and as soon as they were in the little entry part of the plane, she informed him they had a spot in the first class and that he was being upgraded.
Dean was thrilled.
Halfway through the flight, another flight attendant approached. "Hello, sir, are you enjoying the flight?"
"Why, yes, I am, thank you." The truth was, and he had no idea why it was so, he wasn't scared this time. He didn't even notice the time fly by as he kept thinking about the man he stopped at the airport and had a minor panic attack in front of.
He introduced himself as Castiel Novak.
They exchanged a few words before the man told him he'd see him around and then hurried off to his flight and Dean kind of regretted not having the nerve to ask for his number. But still, it was a ice experience and would be a fond memory once
"Excellent. We are very happy to hear it," the flight attendant said with a smile, then looked at the other passengers as if she was making sure nobody was listening. "How would you like to see the pilot's booth?"
Turned out, Dean already knew the pilot.
"Hello, Dean. Why don't you take a seat there?" Cas said, only glancing back at Dean for a split second before turning his attention back to the plane. Dean couldn't wipe the smile off his face.
"So, you enjoying your flight so far?"
"Yeah, it's been– I– Did you have them upgrade me to first class?" There might have been a small blush forming on Cas' face. "Maybe."
Dean chuckled. "Well, thank you. I am actually doing well, considering my fear of flying. Though, I have to admit, being in here and seeing that , it's kind of giving me some anxiety…" Dean gulped when his eyes drifted to the large windows… Windshields? Whatever they were called.
"Oh! Well, we can't have that," Cas said and communicated something worth his copilot, then unbuckled and stood up, nearly making Dean's heart stop.
"Dude! The plane!"
"Don't worry, my copilot's got it." Said copilot turned and winked at Dean for a second before refocusing on the instrument board. For some reason, the guy reminded him of Gordon Ramsay, but that was absurd.
Any thought of the copilot flew right out of Dean's head when Cas gave him a bright smile and sat in the seat next to Dean's. "Maybe we can find you something else to focus on?"
Was that a proposition? Did he just–
"Have you had a meal yet? We have some wonderful–" Cas started to say as he reached for a button that would most likely call in one of the flight attendants.
"No, uh-huh. No way I could keep anything down," Dean shook his head.
"You know what? I think I know something that can help, and I am sure you'll be able to keep it down... When in doubt, have a piece of pie."
Dean's mind was spinning. First, he thought it was another proposition, but even when it turned out that it wasn't, Dean wasn't disappointed because pie? Did Cas just offer him pie?
"Apple pie with Vanilla Ice Cream, no better thing in the world," Cas said.
"I'd beg to differ," Dean replied, looking at the man with big, round eyes. Damn it, he was in love.
They spent the most magical of evenings together that night. They had an amazing dinner (Dean tried some kebabs, they were to die for), they talked, laughed and kissed before they parted ways. At least this time, they exchanged numbers and agreed to meet once they were both back in the states.
Cas had a flight in the morning, so he couldn't spend the night with Dean, but he promised to make it up to him when they met next time.
Dean was over the moon.
They texted and talked on the phone over the next few days, and the more he learned about the guy, the more he fell in love with him.
Running through the airport to catch his flight home after being in Sydney for two weeks, Dean accidentally ran into someone. "Scheiße!!" The man yelled.
"Sorry!!" Dean yelled, grimacing, but he couldn't stop, he didn't want to miss his flight. Making it just in time, Dean entered the plane and gave the flight attendant his ticket. The guy looked it over then smiled at Dean.
"It appears we have some room available in first class, how would you like an upgrade?"
Dean couldn't help but chuckle. "Sure, I'd like that."
Only when they walked through the first class section, the flight attendant didn't stop at any free seat, but rather kept walking. All the way to the pilot's cabin. Dean couldn't contain his smile as the realization dawned. If he was scared of going on yet another plane ride, all the fear was wiped away by two simple words.
"Hello, Dean."
