Chapter 1

Summary:

Keziah Velho embodies everything that is magic and a true Champion of Hogwarts.

Notes:

Hello! If you haven’t noticed I did delete then republish this because at first I wasn’t happy, but then re-reading and then rewriting made me think I want to continue this and also if a few people enjoy it then that’s good enough for me! So if you enjoy the adventure, then thanks for reading and giving this a chance!

Keziah Velho is a Ravenclaw with brown hair and eyes usually in the braid tail. She has glasses as well.

I want to preface that I in no way support her views. I enjoyed the game, because I got it as a gift for a late birthday and so well, it was free and I am simple and might as well play it. I was also laid up for 2 weeks when I received it so why not, ya know?

Thanks for any Kudos, Comments, and just stopping by! I appreciate it more than you think and would love to know what you think! <3

Chapter Text

She never wanted to go back down there and yet that’s where she kept waking up to. She’d close her brown eyes and open them again hoping to find it all a dream. She tried over and over again getting the same result. The definition of insanity. It didn’t matter how many times she tried to escape, she still opened her eyes to see all the stone structures, murderous goblins charging after her all fueled by the same desires–bloodshed, revenge, falsehood, and power. Her heart was beating so fast and powerful that she thought it could have burst out of her chest. She was sick to her stomach as she looked at all the blood coating the rocks. She couldn’t wrap her mind around that all these people were laying their lives on the line for her, or for a cause they thought was worth dying for.

She couldn’t make any mistakes.

She couldn’t run away.

She had to be perfect.

She had to face it head on.

She had to or she’d be dead. They’d all be dead.

She looked at her mentor for guidance and reassurance. She needed to know that she could do this and that he could be there by her side because he was really the only one who was. She needed to know that everything she’s done over the past year was worth it and would be enough. For some reason she knew destiny led her up to his moment. She was used to running, being free, and now her hand was forced to submit to be destiny’s doll.

The moment their eyes met…he fell. Gone.

The cavern collapsed and the moment of truth arrived. If Ranrok escaped he would terrorize the world and destroy wizard-kind. She had to stop and not worry about those in the cavern, because if she failed, if she wasn’t strong enough, then it wouldn’t matter anyway.

The moment she stopped falling, she had to stand and fight. She had to get back up and finish what they started.

But it was all so painful. Every dark blast she wasn’t able to protect herself burned, fiercer than any Confringo or Incendio she had been on the wrong end of. It was like an agonizing darkness was attacking her own magic as well as her body. A darkness trying to swallow a light. While it was true one couldn’t be without the other, it didn’t mean the darkness wouldn’t try to prevail.

She was the light that needed to tame this darkness or she’d lose everything she thought she would never have. Before she couldn’t miss what she never had, but now she’s selfish. She wanted to keep her friends close and never let them go, never let them get hurt. While she knows she hasn’t been doing the best at that, she understands what measures have to be taken to protect the ones she cares about and not let them suffer.

Every time a pain surged through her, but felt someone there lending their hand. She couldn’t see them. Only they could see her helping them. She tried to get back up, but faltered. She landed roughly on her hands and knees only to stare at those who couldn’t help her. Her heart ached because she was the reason why. However, perhaps if she stopped him then everything could go back to the way it was.

She could hangout with her friends as they tried on clothes at Gladrags.

She could take on challengers at Summoner’s Court.

She could laugh at whatever mess Sebastian got himself into or go exploring nearby caverns. Just the two of them.

As she turned to deliver the final blow she saw them. Bodies scattered across the battlefield. They shouldn’t be there. They were all safe back inside the school. None of the people she cared about should be lying on the ground with soulless eyes staring at her silently pleading as to why she didn’t save them like she said she would.

Sebastian.

Natty.

Poppy.

Ominis.

Professor Fig.

And so many others besides them.

She stumbled, fumbled. Like she always had. Like always she fell and was too late to get back up. They weren’t coming back no matter how powerful or perfect she was. There was no wave of the wand that could fix any of this. Not even the power she completely yet understands inside her could help.

She felt like she was on fire.

She felt like she was drowning.

She felt like she was truly lost with her head in the clouds.

If she stopped him then she could get back the life she’s always dreamed of having. The life she saw through the broken windows of that place she thought would be a sorry excuse for home. She wasn’t just doing this for the world or her friends, but for herself too. She’s selfish like that. That pain in her heart stopped, as a darkness crawled up her arm, and she was able to stand on her two feet–

“You cannot stop me!”

A darker, more dreadful blast came toward her and in that moment, she never felt so powerless as it struck–

Keziah Velho gasped as flew straight up having been awoken from her nightmare. She hoped she hadn’t awoken anyone if she had been screaming. There were no sudden noises so she sighed in relief. If she had thought about it sooner she should have put up a silencing charm.

She clutches her shirt over her heart with a grip that’s borderline painful and just squeezes her eyes shut trying to imagine anything else then their blood and lifeless bodies. She put her head in her hands and massaged her eyes with fingers trying to make those images she was still vividly seeing while she was awake retreat to her subconscious. She needs to breathe because she feels like she can’t. She doesn’t know how long it takes before her lungs finally calm down.

For months it’s been the same dream over and over. Every time she closes her eyes she finds herself back underneath Hogwarts Castle. She’s powerless to watch as Ranrok takes the ancient power the Keepers attempted to protect to kill everyone she cared about. Just like Professor Fig. Everything is so vivid and real, because it actually happened.

Poppy’s tearful eyes that lost their light wondering why she hadn’t stood by her as her friend and protected them like she had done before.

Natty made her lurch as it seemed she had been struck again like the night they took down Harlow. She had protected her and she couldn’t do the same in return.

Ominis’s eyes always carried a sense of loss, but now his slack face wasn’t pinching at her with concern that he dare admit he had. He wasn’t making now cheeky remarks for good times sake

Sebastian’s hurt the most. Those joyful yet mischievous brown eyes of one of her best friends now stared at her like she failed him. It was like her own wand casted Avada Kedavra instead of his.

She might have as well killed off them herself with own wand since she was too useless, powerless to stop Ranrok.

They were all just lying there on the ground with blank stares, blaming her.

She was left completely alone where the thought of going forward hurt too much.

She couldn’t make her thoughts shut up. She knows they weren’t there and if they had they might have met the fate she saw over and over again. The same one that Professor Fig met.

His own roaring voice bleeding into her own.

“Your pitiful magic is no match for mine, child.”

She could have been stronger.

She should have just handled everything alone.

Then they wouldn't have lost anyone. If only she had stood up for herself and made everyone see that there is always another way. Maybe then Professor Fig would still be alive. Then maybe Sebastian wouldn't have to live with the guilt. Solomon could still be alive and maybe they could have found a safe cure for Anne. Natty wouldn't have literally put herself in harm's way for her. Keziah knew she could take the Cruciatus Curse; she had done so before. Poppy’s family drama would have been dug up and then targeted.

Keziah could handle the pain like she always had. It would be nothing new. She shakes her head to get rid of these thoughts. She doesn’t need these haunting her today as she looks out the window to see the sun starting to rise. She figures she might as well get and make sure she has everything ready. She was about to take the next step into her sixth year. She silently hopes it won’t be as exciting as the last one.

Keziah sullenly packed her things in her rented room at The Three Broomsticks. Within a couple hours she’ll be back at Hogwarts Castle in her room where she might start to actually feel safe and be at home. And maybe even perhaps even start to heal. Being around everyone’s light spirits and having distractions may help ease her pains and worries. It all just happened so fast and she couldn't believe all that had happened after the dragon attack. There was so much unnecessary bloodshed and loss.

She looks down at her hands. Although everyone else would tell her otherwise, all she could see was the blood lost. The stains of red that would never come out no matter how hard she scrubbed or tried to atone. Professor Fig. Lodgok. Rookwood. Ranrok. Goblins Loyalists. Ashwinders. Yes, most of those were people out to kill her and she had no choice to defend herself, but at the end of the day, they were all beings. They all probably had families to go home to. People who cared about them. She remembers the goblins talking about their mothers who made mushroom stew and brothers who worked at Gringotts.

Family.

Keziah couldn’t relate to that to ever having one. Closest thing to family were the people she met at Hogwarts and she sighs as she looks at the stack of opened, but unanswered letters. All her friends she had made had been writing to her over the summer, but hadn’t received until recently. Once she arrived in Hogsmeade, it was like all the owls flocked to her delivering their heartfelt words and wonderful adventures. She read them over and over again, knowing that these people were all alive and kept her going.

Natty had visited Marabeleland as well as Uagadou and her family had gotten more closure regarding her father’s death. Natty didn’t hesitate to mention it was all because of her and being sneaky enough to make her realize what she did for Keziah was the same for what her father did for her. She mentioned that she told all her friends there about their adventures and her new friend. Keziah was glad she made such an impact on her and it was such an honor to see her grow.

Poppy said she and her grandmother spent the entire summer examining all sorts of creatures. That she also retold everything to her gran and that the older woman wanted to meet her one day. She had tons of notes to show her when they met again. She also talked about all they could do during the year like going to The Three Broomsticks and checking in with the Centaurs about the Snidgets. She wanted to see how they’d grown. As long as they steered clear of any hostile nesting mother dragons then Keziah was all for it. It sounded like fun and a bit of normalcy.

Ominis had actually written to her which was about him complaining about his family, but also to inform her that he and Sebastian were on talking terms and they should meet in the Undercroft when school starts. There was also a postscript note to answer Sebastian as apparently he was getting insufferable as she wasn’t answering his letters.

She had the most from Sebastian as he sent her multiple letters asking her how she was, what she was doing, and eventually the letters were asking her to answer him because he was concerned. She might have to tease him for that one. That wasn’t all as he said he’d had been doing a lot of thinking, self-reflecting, and is taking her words about the second chance to heart. He did inform her in one of the letters that he hadn’t heard from Anne herself, but he had gotten word that she was safe which gave him peace of mind. He mentioned he wasn’t at complete peace however with Keziah not answering.

It wasn’t just that she didn’t want to answer, but she didn’t have the heart to lie to them about how her own summer was fairing.

Keziah didn’t want to tell them. After the madness of Ranrok, protecting the respiratory, and death of Professor Fig everything seemed to just continue downward. The realization that Professor Fig’s life wasn’t the only thing that ended in the cavern. She had lied to them enough and if she were to do so again then it would only be of omission.

She couldn’t tell them she didn’t have anywhere to go.

Keziah Velho knew she was a mystery to her classmates. Everyone had questions about who she is. She's not deaf to their whispers. To them she was the new fifth-year who came in late to the Sorting Ceremony to be placed into Ravenclaw only to rise up and stop the goblin war. However, they don’t know the girl from before. To be honest, Keziah didn’t quite know that herself.

Keziah’s memory from before is hazy. She was aware about the magical world and that she wasn’t allowed to be a part of it thus kept quiet in fear of being in trouble. Her memory was already muddled and she didn’t want to lose anymore of it. All she remembers is finding herself outside an orphanage at eleven with the selfish caretakers bluntly telling her that her parents left her to rot for being a useless thing. She thinks she would be furious with them, but she doesn’t remember them. She doesn’t know their names or what connections they had to the magical world. She figures they must have some for the reason she knows about it.

Keziah has a theory that her parents were a wizard and witch who must have believed their child was a Squib. Perhaps her family and the Gaunts weren't entirely different. Perhaps they might have cared a little about her since they didn’t just outright kill her. She wishes she could ask them why they just left her all alone, but ignorance is bliss.

Four years she spent there being treated as nothing more than dirt on the bottom of someone’s shoes. The other children bullied her while the adults stood by and watched or turned a blind eye. She remembers the times they’d cut her braids, shove her, and even tore up what little belongs she had. However, Keziah didn’t quite take all their antics lying down and found creative ways to get some payback. Well placed book that makes one of them slip did nicely as the caretakers yelled at whoever owned the book. Or dirtying whatever chore they just completed so they’d get in trouble.

Nothing she ever recalls about her time before the orphanage ever stands out to her. However, she does note the only time a memory truly resurfaced about her family was when they were investigating the scriptorium and Sebastian used Crucio on her. It didn’t last long and she never saw anyone’s faces. She thought that was odd, but never had time to mention it to Professor Fig. They had more important matters to be concerned about, but she wonders if she should ask or do some research in the library.

Regardless, the moment her magic actually appeared and Professor Fig told her she was coming with him, it felt like a dream come true. She could actually run away to a better life she thought she was to have literally in a horse drawn carriage. Despite it later being attacked by a dragon, she didn’t mind it when she actually thought about the bigger picture.

Professor Fig felt like her fairy godfather.

He learned about the conditions she lived in and was absolutely furious at the notion she may have to return there after the school year. The thought of her having to live in such an unwanted place made his blood boil. She was a witch and apparently a mighty powerful one at that as the school year concluded. Just losing her temper could cause a chaotic result she wouldn’t have meant. Even worse with the ancient magic she possessed. Accidentally striking down someone with lightning wouldn’t be easy to cover up. She needed a safe place and he offered his own home. She cried in relief that he told she was more welcome to stay with him.

Professor Fig asked her once if she ever thought about using the power Isidora showed them on herself. To eliminate those painful emotions that have been swirling inside of her for years. Keziah was honest with him. She hadn’t thought about it. She once told Professor Ronen that his experiences made him who he was today and she believed that. She was strong because of what she went through and carried hope it would turn out better. It was all set in stone to be a happy ending…and then he died. It never truly sank in what his death meant until everyone was talking about the end of the year and going home. It was even worse when Professor Weasley wanted to talk the day school ended.

Keziah internally panicked all through the end of the year feast despite the cheering of her housemates that she had gotten them 100 points and were declared the winner of the House Cup. She didn’t know where she was going to go and there was this internal fear to tell her professors about her predicament. Would they just send her away and forget about her? That’s what everyone else did. She didn’t think they would, but adults weren’t always most forthcoming. She didn’t want to impose on her friends either by ruining their vacation by having her tag along. She didn’t want anyone to feel like she owed them or they owed her.

She thought about living out of the Room of Requirement, but couldn’t take the chance of Deek telling Professor Weasley. It felt wrong to ask him not to tell her even if he did find out. So on the last day of school she packed up everything she could fit including a hefty supply of Wiggenweld Potions and other necessities and simply left before anyone could ask any questions. As she ran through the halls heading outside the castle, she heard talk of people whispering about her friends and the staff wanting to know where she was.

For months she hid out in places either no one dared go or places she’d already raided in the past that were barren. Deserted castles and even going to Ashwinder camps throughout the area and in the Forbidden Forest. Certainly the places weren’t the most comfortable, but she made it work and most of them had at least beds. She was thankful that since she was in the area of Hogwarts she could still use her magic just in case she needed to defend herself.

She thought it would be simply spiders and mongrels she’d have to defeat. Not literally running for her life against a being she couldn’t defeat or knew anything about. At least she could hide and run from it. If anyone were to ask what her greatest fear of a creature was, it was whatever the hell that thing was. Once she got back to school she was going to look it up in a book or casually mention it to see if someone could provide an answer. A black cloaked being that screamed and made her feel completely chilled to the bone.

She practiced her magic and even picked up some new tricks she used throughout her time which made everything easier. Whether or not she was going to tell her friends about them was debatable. She might share them with Natty since she’d understand the most. It was certainly helpful to hang around and be inconspicuous, even if it might have taken almost the entire summer to accomplish.

Keziah thought, despite not having a stable base, she was fairing well. She sold any extra gear she found and took on request that people seemed all too willing to pay her for despite her not asking right out. Whether it was making deliveries, finding lost trinkets, or fighting trolls that strayed too close for comfort.  She also made nice of use of the Disillusionment Charm as she swore she saw a few teachers poking around. She might have even heard them asking questions, but didn’t stick around to find out if the answers were anything to follow through. Eventually she earned enough galleons she could spend the week of summer break within the safety of Hogsmeade and still have enough to afford her supplies. A list which arrived at The Three Broomsticks not long after she arrived.

She spent most of the first couple days resting in safety trying to relax. Luckily she hadn’t encountered too many tough battles, just a few endless nightmarish nights, but the months basically on her own in survival mode really drained her. Sirona cut her a break and oftentimes Keziah found herself helping around the place until she was shooed away saying she didn’t need to do so and should prepare for school.

Keziah had pretty much done all her school shopping once she got the list. There were books, scrolls, and seeds, but there were some last minute items required that were noted to be explained later. Items that were required for sixth and seventh years only and most of it seemed outlandish like needing a dress for females and robes for males. They weren't quite required yet as there was a note that said girls may take time to find dresses together. Keziah bets money on Garlick being the sole supporter of that decision. Keziah chalked it up to perhaps there being a dance of some kind. It actually sounded rather exciting as she had never gone to such an event before!

Keziah closed her trunk with all her clothes and supplies. She didn’t have much to begin with so it only took about twenty minutes and all she had left to pack was a few personal items on the table which included the letters. She had an excuse ready for why she never answered. She didn’t have an accurate way to send them considering her owl, Ajax, stayed at the Owlery over the summer as did quite a few students’ owls. While they cared about each other, he had a mischievous side where he’d deliver her post by dropping the letters on her head before flying off or going to his perch by her bedside.

Little bastard. But she couldn’t wait to see him. She knows he only does it so he sees her smile. When they first met his eyes shined at the bright smile she gave him and he cooed at her. Once he returned to school, she could sense he was watching her with an intense stare. It wasn’t until he started pestering her that he rubbed his head against her happily because she was laughing and smiling like she had when they met.

“Are you ready?” a voice said, grabbing Keziah’s attention which the young witch turned to see the owner of The Three Broomsticks and fellow Ravenclaw witch.

“Oh. Hello Sirona. I am actually. Rather excited to be getting back to school. Thank you again for letting me stay here.” Keziah answered, turning to the owner as she put her bag on her back and grabbed her trunk.

“No need to thank me. You were paying despite my discounted price. You’ve certainly done enough around these parts. I appreciated the help around here too. You know you’re welcome to come back anytime.” Sirona said as she walked up to her and put a hand on her shoulder. “Now listen here. I’m not one to tell, but please talk to your professors. You shouldn’t have to live like this. And if it comes down to it, come back here, you hear. You always have a place here.”

“Thank you.” Keziah answered with a smile.

“Now, I bet you can’t wait to get to school.”

“Absolutely.”

Keziah really couldn’t wait as she walked down the stone path. This year may not be as exciting as her last one, but at least she got to live to be a part of it.

Aw…kitty! Oo! Another one!

Keziah took a deep breath as she looked down the path to see Hogwarts straight ahead. She didn’t know, but she had a feeling about this year. Whether it was good or bad was up for debate, but it boded well at least. There was now so much more in store considering all of fifth year was about playing catch up to the world she had been dropped into and then having to save it. She could truly enjoy herself and what everything around her has to offer.

“There you are!”

Keziah instantly froze. Crud. She slowly turned around to see a brown haired boy storming toward her with both a temper and concern in his equally brown eyes. He hasn’t changed much over the summer. Not that Keziah was looking that intensely at him! Sure, he’s objectively handsome and charming, but that doesn’t mean he feels the same about her. She also doesn’t want to ruin their friendship as she can’t lose someone close to her because she got a little too close and tipped over the line.

“Sebastian–”

“Don’t start with excuses or at least it better be a good one. I’ve been writing to you all summer. No one else heard from you either. Where did you go? Did you receive any of our owls?” Sebastian asked frantically as he looked to make sure she was alright. From his perspective she looked…okay. He was looking respectfully of course because he was a gentleman and they didn’t stare at ladies like that. However, he couldn’t help notice that her clothes looked a little looser. Concern instantly flooded him as he tried coming up with a reason as to what could be wrong from not eating properly or the worst, she was sick.

“I did receive them, but not until roughly a week ago.” Keziah answered. “If you recall, Ajax was here over the summer. I couldn’t take him with me. I’m sorry, I should have said something to all of you before I left. I did love reading how everyone was doing and what they were up to.”

Hopefully he won’t ask any other questions and just let it go. If she were to tell him the truth, she knew he’d absolutely lose it. He’d start on a rant about why she didn't tell him and she won’t admit it to him, but he tended to make it his mission to solve people’s problems by any means necessary and no matter the cost. With him not having too many close people left in his life, she’s aware he isn’t going to let any of the slip from his grasp. She understands that better than anyone else.

“I guess that makes sense. Still, you could have come and visited or told us you wouldn’t be reachable. Despite what Ominis says, he would have enjoyed your company too.” Sebastian said. He briefly wonders if she returned to the muggle world in order to see her own family which is why Ajax couldn’t go with her. Internally he scolds himself not thinking that she could have a family who probably didn’t have many issues as his own or at least frown at the sight of magic. It would have been strange to see an owl flying back and forth. To think of it, he doesn’t know anything about her family. She never speaks of them and he wonders if there is a reason for it.

“I’m sorry, but I’m pleased to know the invitation is available and hopefully still there for any future breaks.” Keziah answered with a smile to which he agreed. “Plus I didn’t want to impose. It sounds like you're making amends with Ominis.”

“Yeah, he and I talked. Really talked and we’re able to sort out some things. No more dark magic to start with and I agreed. He’s been talking to Anne. There isn’t much to update for her condition, but at least she’s not any worse despite not being better. She says she won’t forgive me, but she’ll see me again if I can prove that I’ve changed. That I’m sorry for what happened and making amends.”

Sebastian has had a lot to think about since the end of last school term with how everything ended regarding his sister, killing his uncle, and finding out it was really Rookwood who cursed her. From what she remembers of his letters he’s truly trying to make amends for what he’s done wrong. He’s patching up what relationships he can and he’s even tried making Feldcroft safer for those who still live there. A rebirth for him and she only hopes he finds what he’s looking for.

“That’s good to hear and promise you’ll do so?” Keziah asked.

Keziah wonders if she can ask Sebastian once he finds it within himself how to do so herself. It’s a dark thought, but both their hands have blood on them. Compared to her, his is a speck to hers being soaked.

“As long as you’ll be there to help me.” Sebastian answered without thinking too much about the implications.

All summer he’s been thinking about her. She’s done so much for him and stood by his side despite everything telling her not to. He realized that he took their friendship for granted and never truly appreciated it. Just mere words that didn't carry any proof. He was going to change that. She was incredible and he wondered if she was even aware of it. Not just because she’s a hero. He meant it when he told he’s glad they’re friends and that she came to Hogwarts. However, he didn’t expect it to grow into something more than a kindred spirit and friendship. He’s pretty sure he’s falling in love with her.

Keziah Velho embodies everything that is magic and a true Champion of Hogwarts. Any house would have been lucky to have her.

She’s brave as any Gryffindor. Only someone with true bravery would time after time walk into danger whether it was under their own choice or not. Especially with not knowing what may or may not lie ahead. He’s heard the rumors. Everyone talks about her and what she's done over the course of last school year. From helping takedown poachers, saving various magical creatures, to fighting Ranrok as a bloody dragon in the depths of Hogwarts. There wasn’t any challenge she’d ever back down from.

She’s loyal as any Hufflepuff. Only someone truly loyal would stay by his side and try to help him, even if they didn’t agree with his methods. Keziah voiced multiple times throughout their journey to try and save Anne that she didn’t agree with some of his choices. He could have saved his sister during the attack in Feldcroft with a different spell. They’re all right there at his fingertips. Accio. Bombarda. Or even his favorite, Confringo. While she did know the same curses he did, she said she’d only use them as a last resort. He doesn’t think she’s ever used them once.

She's as ambitious as any Slytherin. She was determined to catch up to the rest of them, no matter what it took to prove she belonged. She took every assignment with a smile and made sure it was completed to the best of her abilities. She completed each trial the Keepers put in front of her to be able to achieve what was expected of her and used whatever means necessary to do so. She wanted to learn all about the wizarding world and what it had to offer. She even learned more about herself along the way.

She’s witty and curious as any other Ravenclaw and Sebastian likes to think she’s the best one. Bloody hell, she was so smart and he’s pretty sure she’s at the top of each of her classes. Despite having been just introduced into their world, she took it like fish to water. She beat him in a duel despite having very little experience. She could make perfect potions on the first try. She could solve any puzzle put in front of her in a matter of seconds or coming up with creative solutions to the problems that lie ahead. They wouldn't have made it out of the scriptorium without her. With her he could always count on her to figure out a solution to save everyone involved.

Blimey, he didn’t think it was a maybe anymore. He was in love with her, but he didn’t dare tell her. He couldn’t lose her friendship when he feels like it could be hanging on by a few threads. He’s said it before, he’s surprised she didn’t give up on him.

Keziah froze for a second like someone had struck her with Glacius as the words left his mouth. The way he said it had struck her heart and made it skip a beat. He wanted her by his side to help him. She would always be there for him. That’s what friends were for, but she couldn’t help wondering if that’s what all they were.

Was she just a good friend who he knew would support him and keep him straight?

After all they’ve been through, from fighting side by side to their playful banter, it just dawned on her one day near the end of last school year that she might like him more than a friend. Even if he would never feel the same, that’s fine with her, but it would make her heart hurt. Perhaps she can make up for not stopping him sooner. If she had been more aware of her surroundings or outspoken then maybe she could have prevented so much pain and grief in the Sallow family. She would never bring herself to take that pain away like Isidora once tried, but at least she could be the one to try and prevent it. Or at least make it bearable to continue living on and not lose oneself.

“Of course!” Keziah answered with a smile. “If you ever think about using anything dealing with the dark arts, I’ll Confringo your trousers in front of the whole school.”

Sebastian let out a hearty laugh. There she was. He could see that and no doubt knew she would follow through. After their adventures last school year, he noticed she spoke out more about his choices once everything calmed down. She wasn’t afraid to be blunt with him, especially when she’s angry. He understands she’s trying to help and he appreciates it instead of just leaving him to drown in his sorrows.

“That is something you’d do. I’m kind of regretting teaching you the Blasting Curse.” Sebastian answered fondly.

“Too late now.” Keziah smirked as they continued to walk.

“By the way, you said you were here for a week already.” Sebastian wondered out loud. Even if she hadn’t mentioned it, it was still in the early afternoon and normally the train doesn’t arrive until after nightfall. Since he lives in the area, he usually arrives a little later, but he wanted to make sure he found a spot to keep watch for Keziah. He didn’t expect to see her this early.

“Yes, I felt a little anxious to get back and since I would be in the area of the school I could practice without getting into trouble. I also hadn’t gotten any of my supplies and took my time.” Keziah lied.

“Did you stop and pet every cat you walked past?” Sebastian asked, cheekily smirking at her. He fondly remembers their first visit to Hogsmeade and remembered him asking why it took so long. She excitedly told him she had to stop and pet all the cats. At first he didn’t understand why she had an owl instead of a cat, but she later explained that Ajax had been a gift from Professor Fig. He mentioned he didn’t want her to be completely alone since she was starting so late. That was sweet.

“What if I did?” Keziah snorted as she then smiled.

Keziah had to remember to keep her story straight as she retold it a second time outside the Great Hall. For the most part, they bought it, but she could see their worried faces with hints that they had inklings that she wasn’t being entirely truthful and simply would rather not talk about it.

“Just as you have done for me, I will listen when you need someone, my friend.” Natty told her as they walked into the hall to get seated for the opening ceremony. She won’t tell, probably her best friend, that she’s been super worried about her. Keziah was the first who made transferring to Hogwarts not as lonely and let her accept peace with her father’s death. They pushed each other to become better, past what they knew was possible, and to heal from within.

“I don’t want my human friends to feel like they're alone.” Poppy had mentioned as she gave her a quick hug. Poppy was so glad she took a chance during their first beast class to reach out to her and it paid off more than she could have ever imagined. She made a friend who is as passionate about magical creatures and wants to protect them as she is. However, she just wished she could have protected her too. She was so scared upon learning the poachers were after her then hearing about her heroic actions against Ranrok. She didn’t dare think what they would have done to her if they had captured her.

Keziah fondly looked after her friends as they all were smiling, happy to be back for another year, as they went back to house tables. She looked over at them all and it made everything hurt less. If she hadn't done what she did, they wouldn't be here, but that didn't make all she did sting any less. She knows they'll all disagree, having told her time and time again that she made an impact on their lives just because she came there. She's thankful for their friendship, but wonders if they’d truly stand by herself through tribulations she was allowed to share. Everything with the Keeper Trials and her ancient magic had been a secret until late last year. Of course she told them, but she couldn’t include them. Trials she had to do alone and walked the path alone at the end. Sometimes being alone was better. Last time others tried to help her, it cost them their lives. She likes to think they would have changed what happened underneath Hogwarts if they were allowed to fight alongside her, but she doesn't want to see her nightmare come true.

“Keziah! Over here! I saved you a seat! I have so much to tell you!”

Keziah looked over to see Amit calling her and waving her down. Beside him was Samantha who looked overjoyed to see her, still overly appreciative for helping her brother. Everett and Duncan were beside her and waved as well. One of them looked a little too happy to see her and she internally groaned knowing she can’t avoid going over there. She smiled as she walked over to sit at her house table unaware of the eyes watching her.

“Do you think he likes her?” Sebastian asked as he gazed at Amit animatedly talking to Keziah about something he wasn’t too interested in. Something about stargazing and going on a trip to find constellations. How their adventure last year had inspired him! Yeah, he totally wasn't paying too much attention.

“What are you going on about now?” Ominis asked.

“Thakkar.” Sebastian said in a low voice. “Do you think he likes her?”

“Oh my goodness, Sebastian. They’re from the same house and they are friends. From what I’ve heard, he helped her translate something she needed. He couldn’t stop going on about it. You can’t assume every single one of her male friends likes her the same you do. Are you going to accuse me next?” Ominis asked.

“What? No. I know you don’t like her like that.” Sebastian said before a moment passed. “You don’t, do you?”

“Bloody hell, Sebastian. No. I see her as a good friend and nothing more despite our rather rocky start.”

Sebastian nodded agreeing even if the other boy couldn’t see it thinking it best not to open barely closed wounds. He’s glad his two best friends are now friends. In the beginning, Ominis had a pure disdain for her. Said she was trying too hard to fit in while she should just lay low. Well, the moment she stepped into the Great Hall late for the Sorting Ceremony was when that idea was thrown out the window. It wasn't her fault that a dragon attacked their carriage. It wasn’t entirely her fault the trolls attacked Hogsmeade. However, since Sebastian had befriended her rather quickly, Ominis didn’t have a choice in hearing about her and later interacting with her. It was over the summer that Sebastian accepted that as the school year wrapped up he thought that he could see Keziah as more than a friend. Apparently Ominis thought he was daft for not realizing it sooner.

“It all worked out.” Sebastian answered.

“Sure, you think so. I think you have other people to worry about like Prewett or maybe even Weasley. Or apparently Hobhouse.” Ominis said. He knows he’s teasing Sebastian about this, but at least gets his eyes off him instead. He can’t see them, but he knows the other boy was staring at him.

Sebastian’s nostrils flared and he frowned. He’s well aware of this fact and doesn’t need the reminders. He remembers that she and Leander tended to the Chinese Chomping Cabbages last year and he could hear the echoes of their conversation through the ceiling. He doesn’t know which of what he heard made him angrier. Hearing him talk crap about him or hearing his failed attempts to flirt with her. Apparently he takes any chance to talk to her whether it’s in class or challenging her to Summoner’s Court.

He rolled his eyes at the thought of thinking about Hobhouse. He knows that he begged Keziah to do him a favor last year about showing his courage in the hidden herbology corridor. She gave him the leaf in the end, apparently he begged, but she told he needed to grow a pair and find his own courage instead of making people do it for him. Apparently he took it in stride and thanked her for the wake up call. Yeah, Sebastian thinks that’s where his fancy grew from and he finds it repulsive.

He wonders if Keziah noticed them or noticed at all the way people whisper about her even before all the madness of becoming the Hero of Hogwarts. Some people called her rather plain looking and that her skills made up for her lack of appearance, but Sebastian thinks they’re bloody idiots. She’s beautiful inside and out. She’s kind and helpful and doesn’t give up.  He admires that about her and just makes loving her easier.

Tink. Tink. Tink.

“Welcome back everyone to another year! It will certainly be exciting and put our year of Hogwarts into the record books!”

Keziah looked around to see almost everyone roll their eyes thinking the same thing. The headmaster means to put his name into the record books. There was no way he wasn’t aware of all the talk about him being the worst headmaster in Hogwarts history. Scrope probably tells him all the time they’re wrong while polishing the man’s bust. That was one loyal house elf.

“Now that the Sort Ceremony is over without any interruptions!” Black announced. Keziah rolled her eyes at that one and Natty just shook her head behind her at the Gryffindor table. Keziah realized the only thing that she didn’t like about being in Ravenclaw was that she couldn’t sit with her best friends. Sure, she talked to Amit, Everett, and Samantha, but she wouldn’t say they were people she went out of way to spend time with unlike Sebastian, Natty, or Poppy. Duncan also seems to have a not subtle puppy crush on her that she prefers not to entertain. “I’d like to welcome Professor Mavis Eugenia who will be taking over for our dear Professor Fig as the professor of Magic Theory. I have been advised by our newest staff member that she would like to have a chance to meet each of our esteemed students, thus one of your classes will be replaced with an individual course project with Professor Professor Eugenia for the first semester.”

The entire hall erupted into groans and cries of protest. This decision might not bother too many students, but sixth years and seventh years were preparing for exams coming up.

Keziah stared at the older woman who smiled at all her future students. She seemed nice enough, but at the end of it, she was replacing Professor Fig. She understood that they had to, but she was going to have to get used to it. She mourned the loss of her teacher and the sanctuary his classroom and office provided. She felt a shiver go down her spine when her eyes stayed on her longer than necessary. Keziah shook it off. Must have been imagining it.

“Now, now, it’ll be the perfect way to allow our newest professor to set you all up for success even if most of you will fail. A couple other announcements. Quidditch has also been canceled again this year.” The entire hall erupted once more in much louder protest. “Silence! Allow me to explain! Hogwarts has been chosen to host the first attempt at the revival of the Triwizard Tournament in almost 100 years! A legendary event that brings together three schools who will select a single student to represent them in a series of contests. This event is not for the faint of heart as the chosen student will be standing alone. We will discuss more about this later, but for now let us welcome the two schools who will be joining us! First the lovely ladies of Beauxbatons!”

The ladies of Beauxbatons entered and Keziah saw almost every girl in the hall roll their eyes and every guy rise off the benches. She hates being judgmental, but these girls seemed rather stuck up and validated beauty. Keziah thought beauty was in the eye of the beholder. They appeared to be an all girls school to begin with, but do they have to act in such a manner? Keziah also noted that she’s glad doesn’t attend their school. She doesn’t think they have any other uniforms other than sky blue dresses and she prefers wearing pants with her boots.

“Now we have strapping young lads of Durmstrang!”

Durmstrang came in with  fierce expressions ready to win. Very serious guys who were here for blood and didn’t dare look at anyone in the crowd and only straight forward. The path to victory was forward. Keziah could respect that as they knew what the goal was in front of them. She wonders if they’re also an all boys school, probably even a type of military school by the short haircuts and uniforms.

Keziah did notice something odd. Either these schools had to be fairly small or they only brought a selected number of students with them. Perhaps they only brought those interested in the tournament and then Keziah curiously wondered if there was something else they weren’t aware of.

“And now we’ll have the Minister of Magic say a few words! Mr. Faris Spavin!” Black announced as the man came on stage.

Keziah snorted to herself remembering what Professor Fig told her about him. He apparently likes to hear himself talk as the man started to talk on and on about who he was and where he started. She looked toward the Professors’ table and her once joyous mood dampened when she saw Professor Eugenia in Professor Fig’s spot. The woman made eye contact with her, but Keziah quickly looked away. She briefly wondered if the new professor had been told anything about her or anything she’s done in the past year. Then she was brought out of her thoughts by the minister’s announcement.

“The Ministry has discussed that only students in their sixth or seventh year may put their name forth for the Triwizard Tournament!” Most of the crowd yelled in protest. “Silence! It is for your own safety as this contest could mean life or death! The selected students must be prepared for the challenges put in front of them. That is all we have to say on the matter. Now to start this tournament!”

The minister then turned around and tapped on the structure with his wand that was brought out behind him while he was speaking. Keziah recognized that structure. It was in the trophy room upstairs. One of her Field Guide Pages explained it and from what she remembered, it was called the Goblet of Fire. The case melted away revealing a stone like goblet which laid inside.

“This is the Goblet of Fire!” Spavin announced. “Any students who wish to put forth their name will do so on a piece of parchment by the end of the week! Please do not do so lightly as if you are chosen, there is no turning back.”

As the man finished his speech, The Goblet of Fire ignited itself in a blue flame. Everyone could only stare memorized by the fire that seemed to have this magic calling out to them. Calling them to attempt their hand at the promised eternal glory.

“You'll have to have your wits about you for this, won't you Ravenclaw?”

Keziah rolled her eyes to meet Sebastian’s smirk as they were leaving the Great Hall after the opening feast. Of course he needed to come make a remark before heading toward his common room.

“Are you ambitious enough to take part, Slytherin?” Keziah teased back, only making Sebastian smirk.

“I tend to think so. Best duelist in this school and a rather cunning young man willing to do anything to get the job done. I think I’ve got exactly what it takes.” Sebastian said.

“Last I checked you were the second best duelist.” Keziah smirked.

“Ouch. And where I thought we were partners in crime.” Sebastian said feigning to be hurt by her remark. “But seriously, what about you? Are you putting your name in?”

“Nooo.” Keziah answered without hesitation drawing it out and shaking her head. “I’ve had enough dangerous adventures to last me a lifetime. I don't need to add to the amount of times I've almost died. I’ll cheer on our champion and wish them the best.”

“And if it’s me?”

“Then I guess I might have to make sure you don’t get yourself killed.” Keziah said as she nudged him as he just smiled in return.

She’d be his cheerleader if he was chosen. He’d go to her for help because he could always count on her. She’s always done so for him and it looks like he might have to wait a little longer before he could return the favor.

Notes:

There’s the new first chapter, lol! Hope you enjoyed it whether you're returning or starting from the beginning! You’ll be happy to know that I’ve actually got all 3 trials planned out already and a good guide set in how it’s going to go! Psst, there is actually a hint in this chapter ;) The next chapter of this hasn’t been newly edited so it might be a hot minute before it goes up!

Keziah’s obsession with the cats is me when I first played, I had to pet every cat I saw. It one-ups Zelda in that regard. We can pet the cats!

If you’re curious, yes, the other story will also be reposted sometime this week, probably later tonight if not the next few days as it’s currently being edited. It’ll also have a new title so I hope you’ll be on the lookout!

Anyway! Hope you enjoyed the chapter and the overall story! Hope you're all doing well!
Thanks for reading and hope you'll stay tuned for the next chapter! See you! (o´ω`o)

Chapter Text

Keziah got a rude awakening the next morning when a piece of paper was dropped on her eyes and she woke up to Ajax staring at her.

“Bloody hell.” Keziah groaned as she waved him off and he simply flapped up to his perch by her bedside. However, seeing that his antics would continue on, it did bring a smile to her face. Was she laughing as she yelled at him to quit it? Maybe, but that’s between her and the bird. Ajax can’t smirk, but she can see the mirth in his eyes. She rolls her eyes as she thinks that the joke is on him next time he wants a treat before she looks at the letter.

Greetings Ms. Velho,

Here’s to a new school year. Do see me after your first class today. I wish to speak with you about this year concluding from your last. As you already know, we have much to talk about. I will see you upon arrival shortly after your class ends and please don’t be late.

Professor Weasley.

Keziah sighs. She doesn’t think Professor Weasley is going to buy that she’s ill. The woman would make it her mission to track her down. This also sounded non-negotiable and she had at least two hours before her second class of the day started after the first was expected to end.

Great. She was going to be thinking about this all day and would no doubt distract her. She also hoped that it would take too much out of her considering her second class of the day was Potions. She almost wanted to write back and ask to speak now. One, in order to get it over with, and the second, she really didn’t want to go to her first class.

She’s thankful that she doesn’t have History of Magic first thing in the morning. That class never fails to put her to sleep. She remembers last year Ominis and her practically falling asleep on each other or making sure the other stayed awake. More her than him. One of the few classes they shared that didn’t include Sebastian which helped develop their friendship since Ominis didn’t really care for anyone else. He appreciated that at least with Keziah, they could have intelligent conversations about subjects inside and outside the classroom.

However, that didn’t mean her first class wasn’t…‘Magic Theory’.

“Hello all! As introduced, I’m Professor Eugenia! While I know sixth years don’t take my class I asked the headmaster to include a special course so I could meet and get to know each and every one of you! I know you must be used to how Professor Fig runs his class, but I’m going to do something a little differently! Through the art of spells you call upon your magic abilities to take shape through the conduit of your wand which starts at the source at its purest form! You. You and where you started. That’s why each of you is going to make a family tree! Let’s explore where you take root and branch out! Find out who you truly are! You just may find out you have more power than you realize!”

‘Did she get this out of an ancient scroll or something? Or she’s definitely been sniffing too many potions.’ Keziah thought. She just looked down at her desk trying not to snicker at her own comments. She couldn’t wait to tell her friends later, especially Sebastian, who would get a kick out of it more than the others. Poppy will just say she’s being mean and Natty will just say to have an open mind. A differing opinion as Sebastian would say.

Keziah couldn’t put her finger on it, but something about the woman was rather unsettling. On the outside looking, she wouldn’t think none the wiser. She was a middle aged woman with her hair in a bun. Her hair was kind of graying, but not super noticeable. However, it isn’t the woman’s appearance that’s making chills run, but it’s how her gaze always seems to find her and stay there. It was only for an extra couple seconds, but it was certainly enough for Keziah to notice. She wonders if after class she should just confront their professor, but ultimately decides against it. She’ll just ask her friends if she’s being crazy and if it’s something to be concerned about.

“Now! Each one of my classes will have a project! This class will be making a family tree of sorts! You’ll discover where your magical power stems from whether it be from your parents or some distance down the line. What were their specialties while in school? What careers did they go into? How did their experiences shape you and will you follow in their footsteps? Answer the questions that could one day influence you. Ah. Don’t worry you muggle born students, you shall not be disincluded. We shall find where you truly came from and where you’re going! Now, for the rest of class, why don’t we write down anything you can think of! You also might want to owl your families and ask anything you don’t know! I’m certain they’ll want to take part in adding to the value of their children! It’s a parent’s job to look out for them and do what’s best. Their best interest should be you and your place here in the world!”

Keziah knew she was going to dread going to this class. She enjoyed every class she had been in last year, and she had hoped this year would be the same. Can’t win them all, but she worried about how she was going to complete the project. All of this surrounded a sensitive subject that Keziah had no immediate desire to seek out. She knew she didn’t need the class, so could she fail her now? She’d probably lose her spot amongst the top grades in her year and be frowned upon by her house, but she’d take it if it meant not needing to come back. She could be doing so many better things with her time.

“Well now, if you didn't finish your letters, please do so tonight, then mail them out as soon as possible. I hope to see responses by next week! Class dismissed!” Professor Eugenia said at the end of class.

Keziah stared at a blank piece of parchment for the entire class period. She didn’t know what to put beside being orphaned and that she didn’t know anything regarding her family. Thankfully having to meet with Professor Weasley meant she could put off asking about the assignment a little while longer. Especially considering the woman went into the office and shut the door. Certainly other students would have similar difficulties and she would have needed to make adjustments.

Keziah looked over at Sebsatian who was packing his things and thought about how he couldn’t ask his family. His parents had died, his sister wasn’t in contact with him and his uncle…yeah, she didn’t want to think about it. She hadn’t asked him about his summer, but from his letters, it had gone well and the people of Feldcroft were looking out for him. Since he was sixteen, apparently as long as he had support he could live on his own.

“That class certainly was…interesting.” Sebastian said as they walked out and got into the hall. They had about two hours before Potions started. Normally they’d go to the Great Hall for lunch and then work on assignments or go to the library to study.

“I’ll say.” Ominis snorted. “I dare not think what my parents will say. No doubt they’ll find out.”

“I think it’s pointless.” Keziah snorted.

“Don’t you want to know if your unique ability is part of your family?” Sebastian asked.

“My ‘unique’ magic has nothing to do with any of that. It’s just a gift that I have that was all by chance.” Keziah answered.

“Maybe you’re related to one of the Keepers or Isidora?” Sebastian questioned.

Keziah hoped not and she highly doubted it. Also it wouldn’t matter much if it were true because the people themselves are dead and the one person she was aware of that descended from a Keeper was a criminal…and also dead.

For the moment anything regarding the ancient magic and the repository was quiet. Well, not as quiet as she hoped as she heard whispering voices when she slept or got close to the chamber. She could still see the flashes of memories of how the said power corrupted everyone. She could be blissfully sleeping and then she’d see flashes of white and red wisps of magic dueling each other underneath her eyelids. She just did her best to resist, knowing she wasn’t able to truly stop it.

Before going to the common room last night she dropped in to make sure the stairwell leading to the Map Chamber was still sealed. She figured it would be considering she’s the only one with the power to open it. She just wishes that this weight wasn’t completely on her.

Niamh said it best, ‘Light does not exist without shadow nor shadow without light. Simply because one can eliminate darkness does not always mean that one should.’

Keziah remembered that and applied it to everything that’s happened, whether she was directly involved or not. This applied to even rather mundane things such as spells. There’s a reason for everything and everyone in the world despite it being ‘evil’ or otherwise misfortunate. Evil is born so good can grow and prosper into their stronger selves.

While Keziah didn’t agree with Isidora, she understood. She understood the pain she felt watching someone else suffer and wanting to do all within her power to make things better. However, people grieve for someone they lost because it is a testimony of how much they were loved. Some people just love too much and that’s what blinds people’s ambitions. It was important to not let that painful grief be all consuming.

That’s how she chose to look at Professor Fig’s death. She cared about her mentor and the reason his death affected her so, was because she truly cared about him. In return, the reason he followed her down underneath the school was because he cared about her and wanted to help her so she didn’t have to go alone like she had been throughout the trials.

She knew he didn’t want to feel guilty to let that grief consume her, but it was difficult. He was the first person, in such a long time, that genuinely cared about her. One day that pain would fade to be a dull reminder in her heart and the nightmares would fade as well. Time heals wounds they say and she would think she’d be tired of waiting.

“I doubt it and if the latter is true, then I don’t want to know.” Keziah answered as she put her hands in surrender and snicker for a second. “Are you going to speak to her about your situation? You know, since your parents are dead.”

“I know enough about my family and I’ll tell her they’ve passed. I’m sure she’ll understand. So why are you so against the project?” Sebastian answered, before he snapped like it all came together. “I know. Your parents are either Muggles, boring, dark wizards, or criminals.”

Keziah breathed heavily out her nose, completely exasperated with him.

“I don’t know.” Keziah said a little louder than she’d like with a hint of frustration. He seriously couldn't drop a subject once it grabbed him in its claws. It's like a new book on the shelf that he won't put down. Yes, she called him a nerd once and he just said right back at her. She cheekily agreed as her grades were better than his.

“You don’t need to tell us anything you don’t want to.” Ominis said, stepping in.

Ominis wasn’t blind to the fact that Sebastian was about to venture into territory that seemed like a touchy subject for Keziah. He’s aware that his newest friend doesn’t speak much about herself and like himself, he knows there is a reason for it. After last year, they couldn’t go down this road again being at each other’s throats when the other crossed a line. The shoe is on someone else's foot now. He understands family certainly aren’t people one chooses and from experience, he also gets wanting to be far away from them. These people are becoming like a new family and he certainly doesn’t want to see them hurt when they’ve learned to calmly talk things out.

“What do you mean by that? How could you not know?” Sebastian said in shock and not quite understanding what she meant. She spent the whole summer with them. Was she embarrassed that they were Muggles? That’s nothing to be ashamed of and she should be proud! She’s a powerful witch who saved the entire world single handedly!

“I do not know about them at all, Sebastian.” Keziah repeated with the same tone and not caring about a filter. She bit her lip trying not to completely lose control and either start screaming or crying. “I don’t know anything about my family. I was dropped off at an orphanage at eleven with hazy memories and knowing that my parents apparently didn’t want me. Even if I wanted to know, which at one point I did, I don’t think I would want to. Not anymore. Yes, a small part of me will always be curious, but I've closed that door right now. Professor Weasley wanted to see me after this class today and she’ll be cross if I’m late. I’ll see you in Potions.”

Sebastian watched as she walked away as it felt like everything was clicking into place. Everything she revealed yesterday to what had uncontrollably came out now. He’s well aware she doesn’t talk about her family, always changes the subject. All he knows is that she was studying with Professor Fig for some time in London before the start of last term.

Wait a minute. She was living in an orphanage? She wasn’t still there, was she? Was that the reason she couldn’t write back to him? Was that the real reason why she came back earlier? The reason being that she had to live amongst muggles and couldn’t because it endangered the secret of the wizarding world. So many more questions ran through his mind. Questions that he needed to know. Was she at least treated well? He already fretted that the answer was no by her apparent loss of weight and disdain for the subject. They were probably starving her and treated her just as worse. Did they know that she was a witch? He looks up to ask her more, but finds she’s already gone. He needs to find out and can only ask her.

“Sebastian wait!” Ominis’s voice was deaf in his ears.

Maybe he'll be able to help her after all. She can come stay with him in Feldcroft. She’ll always have a place in his home. They can be each other’s family in a sense seeing that Hogwarts might be all she has. Well his door is always open and he hates that hers isn’t. Maybe, just maybe he can unlock it and she’ll let him in. Distantly in his mind he thinks that this might open the door for him to tell her how he feels.

_______

Keziah stood outside the Transfiguration classroom for a couple minutes. Professor Weasley might already know that she's arrived, but she just needs a minute to collect herself. She's also trying to convince herself this has nothing to do with where she went after last year and more based on the fact this is technically her second year at Hogwarts. Yeah, she doesn't believe the latter either. Well, time to face the music she decides as she takes a deep breath to calm herself as she walks in and goes toward the professor's office.

“You wanted to see me, Professor Weasley?” Keziah asked. She pushed the door closed behind her, not paying attention to any sounds that followed.

“Yes. Thank you. I wanted to check in to see how you were doing with the start of term and everything that transpired last year. You certainly had quite the year.”

“Fine, thank you.” Keziah answered hoping that her professor wouldn’t be able to see her lying through her teeth. She might say it’s fine, but she’s not. The bags under her eyes say otherwise. The new scars and alertness say differently.

“Ms. Velho, I would think you should heed the advice of your late mentor about keeping secrets.”

Keziah clammed up and she tightened her fist. Professor Fig talked about how perhaps they should have told Professor Weasley about everything beforehand. She was a smart and resourceful witch who knew how to take charge in any given situation. She might have been able to make everything go a lot smoother and made sure she was protected, prepared, and cared for.

“I’m sorry, ma’am.” Keziah said, bowing her head. A sadness overwhelmed her eyes and the brown-haired girl didn’t want her to see her cry.

“That’s quite alright. I’m guessing you’re not handling everything, especially Professor Fig’s death, as I thought.”

“No ma’am. I’m having nightmares about what's happened. Down there and his death. Not just him but everyone I care about and um…I…” Keziah started before she started to sniff as she felt the tears starting to well up as clenched her robes.

“How have you been handling them?” Professor Weasley asked softly. She can tell the girl in front of her is tired and that was simply putting it. She could tell the moment she walked in. Her clothes seemed a little looser and her eyes looked like they were ready to close or shoot open at a moment’s notice of peace or danger.

“Lately I've just been getting so tired until I pass out. I think last night was the first time I really slept in months. Sometimes having something to hold onto like a pillow helps keep me grounded, but it's rare it works now. I've been looking into potions, but the ingredients are rather hard to come by or expensive.” Keziah explained as she sat in the chair in front of the desk and just kept her head down, not meeting the professor’s eyes.

“Hopefully being back at Hogwarts will grant you the safety to rest. I had wished to speak with you before summer break. We might have arranged something better than what you forced yourself to endure. I know what Professor Fig did and was going to do for you. I also know that despite his death, he's still looking after you.”

“W-what?” Keziah questioned. How could that be possible?

“Yes. When he came to me telling me about Ranrok, he told me everything. If anything were to happen to him I was to make sure you were taken care of so you wouldn't have to return to that dreadful place. He explained where he found you and what he promised. I also have instructions to go over his will with you. Ms. Velho, I’m truly sorry if you felt like you couldn’t come to us, but we are here for you and will always be. We're not like those caretakers who ingrained into you that we couldn’t be trusted.

As one of our dear students at Hogwarts, how could we not look out for one of our own? I had hoped you would have seen that for yourself at the end of last year, but that’s hindsight on my part. You’ve exceeded the expectations we’ve placed upon you and the staff couldn’t be prouder. We are here to help, even for the simple things of having a place to stay. I’m sure that the room and Deek could have been more accommodating than hiding around in the highlands all summer, sleeping outside in bandit camps, or scrounging galleons to rent a room.”

Keziah nodded as she finally started crying. All the weight holding back the tears just was relieved and the dam broke. She wasn’t kidding, last night she slept better than she had in months. No nightmares, just a peaceful sleep. All summer she would count how many days, weeks, months, until she could return to Hogwarts and be at home again. At first it felt pointless and then the number dwindled. She hid out in hamlets, camps, and abandoned sites hoping not to run until trouble.

She was also so mad at herself and at what the orphanage did to her. Professor Fig was part of the group who looked after her, it wasn’t just him. Even now, Professor Fig was always looking out for her after he died. She should have expected as much. A man who was always a step ahead and ready for any challenge. They both joked about how they’re both Gryffin-claws. They both carried a wit to solve the problems the bravery got them into at fault of their curiosity. The only difference is that he went to Gryffindor and she went to Ravenclaw. She wouldn’t have minded either house.

However, he left her in his will? That was certainly news to her. She knew he didn’t have any family remaining so she guessed the school or the ministry might have taken care of anything regarding his belongings.

“H-His will?” Keziah asked, a little confused.

“Yes. Professor Eleazar Fig left everything he owned in your name. He and his wife didn't have any children.” Keziah flinched, which didn't go unnoticed, but Professor Weasley continued on. “Thus he instructed that anything he possessed is now yours. I'm sure you're aware he had a home in London.”

Keziah nodded. That's where they stayed while he was working with her at the start of term. It wasn't necessarily small, but wasn't large either. It had three bedrooms. One being his master bedroom, the other a guest room, and the other being an extensive library and office the couple had shared. The office had a secret magical space where they practiced in private and safe confines. It was a nice place that she adored like it was home. It was like she had been adopted for a short time and it warmed her heart the nights he would bring her some tea and tell her to rest as she poured herself over books trying to catch up as much as possible.

“Yes, professor.” Keziah said as she wiped her face which didn't help as she was still crying. For a moment she felt blessed again. It was magical how things just seemed to fall into place. At the orphanage, she dreamed of spreading wings and flying away to a better life. She just never thought those would be wings of broomstick and literally being a witch.

“We've taken the liberty of making sure everything is in order for you. It's your decision what to do with anything whether it be his home, money, or collections, but that won’t be until you come of age eighteen. If you need help, please, don't hesitate to come to us. We’re here for you”

Keziah felt her mouth was dry. She couldn’t find the words to speak. She wanted to thank Professor Fig for taking care of her, but he wasn’t there. In her thoughts she thanked him for always being there for her when she thought no one else would be.

“I-I was just so scared that I’d lose everything I gained here. I never felt like I belonged anywhere until I came here.”

“And here is where you will remain.” Professor Weasley said as she walked closer and pulled the sixteen year old into an embrace.

She simply patted the child’s back as she started to sob. That’s just it. She is a child. A child who was dragged into a war meant for adults and now is dealing with the aftermath. No doubt she probably is experiencing some survivor’s guilt. The adults who failed her because she thought she had to go in alone. All because she was given the power to make sure their world would see another day. Drowning in fear that just like any other adult, they'd leave her. It was a miracle that the late Professor Fig had gotten her to open up.

Her successes covered their failures.

“Thank you.” Keziah said softly as she released her.

“Now, onto my next question, are you planning to put your name in for consideration for the Triwizard Tournament? I think you’d do quite well in the events.” Professor Weasley wondered.

“No ma’am.” Keziah answered as she shook her head. “With everything going on with my studies, ensuring the protection of the repository, and the aftermath of all that’s happened in the last few months, I need to rest. If I were in a better place I’d be interested, but I’ll be okay if I miss this opportunity.” Keziah explained.

“That’s very mature of you. I bet you’ll be an excellent help to one of your classmates if you choose to do so.” Professor Weasley said.

“I hope so.” Keziah said. If one of her friends were chosen, she’d be there at their side like she always has been.

The door was cracked to Professor Weasley’s office. If anyone were to recall, it was supposed to be closed for it was a private conversation. However, a hand grabbed it before it closed, keeping it just open enough for the conversation to be listened to. No one saw a disillusioned figure creep away with a heavy heart.

Why was it always her? What other pains would plague her? Why wouldn’t she confide in them or even himself? No matter, he would protect her. He would do all he could to make sure she was able to wake up everyday wanting to keep going and fall asleep without worries of what was to come.

This time Sebastian Sallow wouldn’t fail another girl he loved.

.

.

.

“Professor, may I ask a question?” Keziah asked.

“Of course, dear.”

“I encountered a being during the summer. It made me feel like I couldn’t be happy and sent what felt like ice through my body. It chased me through the forest until I lost it by hiding in tombs or by other means. It had a black cloak and appeared like a ghost of some kind.”

Professor Weasley knew immediately she needed to speak to someone, at least from the ministry about this.

Sebastian never got a chance to bring up what she, herself, revealed to him before their next class. He already rolled his eyes at Ominis who was giving him the riot act. Although the other boy told him to tell what he had overheard. He’d tell him back in the common room, but he at least told Ominis it was rather concerning. It was also rather concerning that she wasn’t in class yet.

“To start off this class we are going to be doing something a little different–” Professor Sharp started before the door opened and Keziah walked in.  “Ah, Ms. Velho, how kind of you to join us.”

Sebastian is instantly drawn to her face. Despite her glasses covering some, he can tell she’s been crying because her eyes are a little red. He doesn't blame her considering the emotional ordeal he heard. The talk with Professor Weasley must have gone on longer than expected because she walked in and went straight to Sharp with a note. He wanted to go to her, but they were in the middle of class.

Sebastian won't say he isn't curious about what was written in that note that made the usually stoic and stern teacher look as harmless as a puffskein for a moment. The man quickly read it before nodding, patting her on the shoulder, and instructing her to take her station. He curses that she somehow had gotten one all to herself, but if they’re brewing anything he can always pop by and check on her.

“Back to the lesson, I have several potions here I brewed this morning. Your job is to identify them and what they do. Your homework assignment will be a ten inch parchment on what ingredients are used and why someone would use it. One at a time, come up and carefully smell each one.”

One by one they each took turns. Sebastian kept an eye on Keziah and saw how she silently went about doing the assigned tasks and making notes in her notebook. She goes before him and as she reaches the last potion on the table her eyes widened and the red from her eyes had traveled to her cheeks. He won't admit out loud that he likes the clearly evident blush. It’s rather cute. He’s curious to know what kind of potion granted that reaction. As he gets to the same potion he takes a whiff wondering what about it could have made her react in such a way. It has a pearly like sheen to it and the steam rises in the form of spirals. Odd.

He smells…mallowsweet. Keziah always has some on her as she cleverly completes Merlin Trials. He smells burning wood which is the same smell Keziah’s broom makes. She prefers riding a broom than any of her mounts. She says she's afraid she could be attacked and they'll get hurt. He remembers her saying as much as she loves Highwing, she loves Sepulchria, her Thestral. A gentle beast who sought her out after the dragon attack to see if she was alright. And then there is a hint of perfume that he recognizes instantly as one Keziah brought last year when she was out shopping with Poppy.

It then dawns on him as he then remembers what the assignment is. He’s read about this potion. It's Amortenia. It's a powerful love potion or more like gives the drinker an infatuation. It smells differently to each person based on what they're attracted to. All he can smell are things that remind him of Keziah Velho. Each one reminding him what he loves about her. He doesn’t know why he’s surprised.

She uses the mallowsweet to do the Merlin Trials she showed him. Puzzles that a researcher showed her that she adores to figure out as she is curious to know what will happen if she solves them all. He’ll never understand how she finds those entertaining. He loves how intelligent and curious she is. It never takes her long to figure out how to solve each one and even if it stumps her, she always finds a way. A true Ravenclaw.

The broom smell says she's compassionate toward her beasts to not risk the chance of putting them in harm's way. With so many poachers they could mistake them as a singular beast and shoot them down. She also is competitive as she took on Imelda's taunts and jabs at the flying trials only proving to the Slytherin girl she had underestimated her abilities.

Then it was her perfume. While he didn't think she needed it, he certainly didn't mind it, especially after she borrowed something of his. Leander, the arsehole, made a comment one day about how she smelled like she had been outside all day and it was rather un-lady-like. She takes care of her beasts daily and loves to explore but it never bothered anyone. Apparently it bothered Keziah as she went out with Poppy on a trip to Hogsmeade and bought a scent that smelled of berries. She needed to not worry about that, but it's what made her considerate of others.

“Take the rest of class figuring out the assignment.” Professor Sharp instructed.

Sebastian nodded to their professor and himself. That's his que as he picks up his notebooks. He’s going to go talk to her–

“No Sebastian.” Ominis said, throwing his arm out and grabbing his robe blindly. He knows his oldest friend hasn't always been the type to take a hint.

“Ominis. She needs someone–”

“I think right now, she wants to be left alone.” Ominis said. He thought it was obvious. If she wanted to talk to them she would have immediately come to their table after they were to complete their task. He also noted how Professor Sharp’s demeanor changed shortly after she walked in late. People have been late to his class before and gotten detention. Day one or not, if a student was late they’d be scrubbing caldrons.

Sebastian just let out a heavy sigh. When he and Ominis talked over the summer the other promised to start listening to him, to the both of them more. A voice of reason. A voice of wisdom. That they were looking out for him and at times he can get a little lost in his own ambitions which makes him blind and they sorrowfully know can end in people getting hurt.

“Fine.” Sebastian snorted and his tone let Ominis know that he was listening, but he wasn’t happy about it.

“Good. Perhaps apologize later for sticking your nose further than she wanted and not worry about her family issues right now. I’m sure we all have better things to worry about.” Ominis added to his suggestion.

Sebastian just sighed. He hates that Ominis was usually right. Hopefully he might change his mind when he tells him about what he overheard. While at Hogwarts, her family matters weren't too worrisome, but what about the approaching breaks? For all he knows, she'll be completely alone.

Class ended for the day and immediately Sebastian ran to Keziah with Ominis following not too far behind.

“Hey, Kez…” Sebastian started to say. A simple little nickname he gave her and he couldn’t tell if she either didn’t mind, liked it, or loathed it. He’s thinking perhaps all three as she rolls her eyes.

“What, Seb?” Keziah cheekily answered.

Alright, he had to give her points there. The moment ‘Kez’ left his mouth one night in a mine, it was game over. It was an accident really, but she wittily turned around and called him ‘Seb’.

“I just wanted to say I’m sorry. I went too far earlier. Clearly you didn’t want to talk about it and I made you reveal sensitive information you didn’t want to. I’m sorry and if you ever want to talk, I’m here.”

“It’s okay. Thank you for apologizing.” Keziah said with a soft smile. “Perhaps later we can talk. Just not right now.”

“Sounds grand.” Sebastian said with a smile back. “And you promise you’ll come to us if you need anything?”

“Yes.” Keziah said, smiling at his insistence. “If I need help, I know who to go to. You, Natty, Poppy, and Ominis have made it clear to me that if I ever need anything, you’re the first to know. Bloody hell, even just for a pat on the back I can go to any of you.”

“Good. As long as you’re aware.” Sebastian replied.

“Great, we missed lunch so can we please go to Great Hall to grab a bite to eat.” Ominis interjected.

“You all haven’t eaten yet?” Keziah asked.

“No. This one wanted to wait on you.” Ominis said, throwing him under the carriage.

“You didn’t have to, but that’s sweet.” Keziah said before she chuckled and grabbed her boys’ arms. “Come on then. Apparently before you fade away.”

“Are you sure you’re not entering your name? Today is the final day. I would think a witch of your caliber would sweep the floor of the competition.” Sebastian said as he and Keziah walked through the halls on the day before the night of choosing.

“Flattery will get you nowhere, Sallow.” Keziah snorted. “My decision was final. Everyone has asked me this anywhere I go and I’ve said the same thing. I need to focus on myself and not on my next adventure that might get me killed.”

She wants to put everything that happened within the last year as part of what made her stronger, but also something she can put behind her to focus on the future. There will always be a dawn after the night after all. Despite the pain she endured, she’s ready to see what’s in store for this year. There was just so much going on and a little normalcy will be exactly what she needs. Just simply going to class, hanging out with friends, and doing her assignments–oof, not as exciting.

The moment the smell wafted into her nose, she immediately knew what the third potion was that Professor Sharp had them identify. Certainly it doesn't help that the person who the smell comes from is walking beside her. Geez she can't get the smell of him out of her nose, but she hates she isn't completely against it. She can't tell him that in the Amortentia, she smelled smoke, books, and his cologne. She also got a hint of Butterbeer reminding her of promises he made in her letters and the time he truly first tried to protect her in The Three Broomsticks.

His favorite spell is Confringo as he’s always been impartial to more fiery forms of magic. The smell of smoke permeated in the Undercroft and it proves that he truly does trust her. Like she's said before, he's a nerd who enjoys a good book he can put his nose in and get lost. So does she and they’ve often found a spot in the library together to just read in. Even she enjoys smelling the pages. Butterbeer reminds her of how he said in his letters they were going to go for a drink or two at once a month along with her first visit to Hogsmeade. He originally said a week but retracted saying it might be too much. She wouldn’t mind it being their ‘thing’, but they can always go with their friends.

And as his friend, she’s worried about him having put his name into the Goblet of Fire. The odds of him being chosen, in her opinion, are rather high. From what she learned about the Goblet, it picks the student who has the most potential to attempt the trials that would await. While there were several seventh years entering, that didn’t mean a sixth year couldn’t give one of them a run for their galleons. She was aware of all who had put their name forth especially in their year.

Sebastian. Leander. Imelda. Garreth. Eric. Nellie. Charlotte. Constance. Astoria.

Duncan says he did, but Keziah doesn’t believe him and everyone called him out on it.

Each one of her friends has asked her if she’s doing the same. Every day someone asks and she dreads when they tell her she should, or has to, because she’s the Hero of Hogwarts. She’s not entitled to do anything. She knows Sebastian is only asking to joke with her as she knows he’s aware of her feelings on the matter. It’s all good fun and not serious so she’s pleased that no one has yet asked her today–

“Keziah!” a voice called.

Sebastian kept his snickers to himself and only smirks when he sees Keziah roll her eyes and hold in a groan. However, he then recognizes the voice and now he’s unhappy too.

“Oh my goodness.” Keziah sighed as the person calling out to her caught up.

“What do you want, Hobhouse?” Sebastian asked, turning around to face him with a stern glare.

Keziah resisted the outward urge to smile, appreciating her best friend for speaking out. She takes a little joy in seeing the other Ravenclaw tense up around her ‘guard dog’ as she has heard a few people whisper last year. A part of her can’t wait until Cross Wands starts back up and she can remind people that she can fight her own battles, but for the moment seeing the ass she once helped turn annoyance practically wet himself is a treat.

“Oh. Sebastian. Didn’t see you there. Um, I just wanted to ask Keziah a question.” Duncan said nervously as he looked at her. He definitely saw Keziah’s big bad protector as everyone else has been putting it lately. It makes talking to the bravest and smartest girl in school rather difficult. He isn’t the only one. A few others from their year have taken note of his protective streak. He doesn’t blame the guy. She’s so pretty and kind despite the fact that she's been rather moody with him lately. He remembers telling his family about her and they all requested he try and court her. He wholeheartedly agreed! He remembers having a conversation with Andrew Larson about her in their room the other day. That was before Everett told them to be quiet. He doesn’t understand why she’s good friends with that troublemaker. “We don’t see each other much in the common room so I was curious if someone as brave and smart as you was competing in the tournament.”

“I’m not, Duncan. You are not the first person to ask nor do I think you will be the last before tonight.” Keziah deadpanned, letting her tone suggest she was rather fed up with the question and conversing with him.

“Right!” he said, like it was obvious. “Should have known because you're so humble. You were so gracious to help me and give advice which I can’t thank you enough. Also, you’ve already saved Hogwarts so no need to show how spectacular you are. If you did compete, Ravenclaw will definitely support you, especially me–”

“Duncan. Leave.” Sebastian growled as he narrowed his eyes on him.

Duncan froze as he looked into the anger of the male's brown eyes. He knows this is a losing battle and the little confidence he did have to come talk to her is immediately snuffed out by Sebastian Sallow. He really doesn’t want to be on the wrong end of his wand.

“Um, right. I’m going to be late for something. Bye Keziah.” Duncan said as he turned and ran.

Sebastian smirked watching him run practically with tail between his legs. He was also aware that quite a few people have dubbed him Keziah’s guard dog. Not the most flattering name, but he’ll take it. Ominis was the one who told him and he just laughed, feeling proud of himself. Good, then people will know he isn’t going to leave her side and if anyone wants to get to her, they’ll have to go through him first.

“I might have thrown up in my mouth a little.” Keziah said as soon as he was gone. She then gagged. When he said he never sees her in the common room, he wasn’t kidding. She avoids it like the plague some days.

“That was revolting. Does he do this all the time?” Sebastian inquired.

He agreed with her. He’s known that the other boy, several other boys in their year, have fallen head over heels for their ‘new fifth-year’. He can’t really talk because he’s one of them, but he’s not creepy about it or only cares that she’s a hero! He was also her friend first, one of her best friends if he’s been frank. He appreciates Keziah for who she is and not entirely for what she’s done. She's done so much for him personally with barely any ask in return and that's what he appreciates so dearly. He sees how brave she is to even take on such endeavors and kind to help those who need it. He also isn’t a blood status ass as Keziah once revealed to him.

“He isn’t the only one. That’s why I don’t return to my common room as much as my housemates would like.” Keziah remarked.

“He wasn’t kidding?” Sebastian asked. “Do you ever go back?”

“I do. Only to sleep and after everyone’s gone to bed. I sometimes sneak in through the roof.” Keziah said with a laugh. “Samantha owes me and I simply requested a favor from her. Since I helped her brother with a rather unfortunate curse upon their family, she doesn’t tell anyone where I’m at. If I didn’t, everyone in Ravenclaw would never leave me alone the moment I step into the room. I can name five people who run toward me like a moth to a flame. It drives me mad somedays.”

Her closest friends in her house are Amit, Samantha, and Everett.

She and Amit are friends. She genuinely likes his company. While they don’t share too many common interests she can carry a conversation that isn’t singing her praises or making her feel uncomfortable which some are awful attempts at flirting. They often talk about star constellations and while he’s more into locating them, Keziah wants to know the stories behind them or perhaps write them. Why are each of them named that way and if there is some kind of legend based on each one? Her favorites are Corvus and Phoenix.

Everett is also her friend. They can hold a conversation and at one point last year she finally got him to try out the timed trials. He didn’t beat her fastest time which, she will humbly say in front of Imelda, is number one on the board. She’s also been helping him afford his own broom. After talking with her last year, she mentioned that she might be able to sell some of what she found or that he’s found. He’s grateful and promises to never dungbomb her. He’s even offered to team up with Samantha to sneak her in.

Zenobia and Sophronia are like the annoying little sisters she never wanted, but she got anyway. They both follow her like little ducklings wanting to be around their ‘hero’. Keziah doesn’t care for Gobstones and she can only hear about Depluso and quizzes so much. She likes to learn, but on her own terms.

Keziah has never thought herself as a violent person toward her classmates outside of a duel, but Astoria can trip down the steps in the common room. Keziah can’t walk past the girl without her saying something rude. She just takes a deep breath becoming a bigger person, but she can’t help wondering if the other girl is jealous or still mad she beat her Cross Wands. If she is jealous, Keziah has absolutely no clue of what because Keziah doesn’t like the attention as much as people think.

Don’t get her started on Andrew or Duncan. Both boys share a common interest–her and she’s heard from Everett that he’s thrown a pillow at them at night to get them to shut up. They both obviously fancy her to an almost obsessive degree and Keziah can’t seem to be at peace around them. They just stare at her and talk about how she could be the best thing that came to Hogwarts. She seriously doubts that.

“You can always sneak into the Slytherin common room.” Sebastian said nonchalantly.

“You know I can’t, but I appreciate the offer.” Keziah said as she gave him a shove.

“It wasn’t an offer; it was a suggestion.” Sebastian said with a smirk.

“You’re insufferable.” Keziah said as she rolled her eyes and Sebastian just chuckled. “Come on or we’ll be late.”

Keziah then turned the corner as she slammed right into someone. Both parties hit the floor rather hard. The fall didn’t hurt as Keziah had taken enough spells to know true pain, but it was more of the shock. However, what hurt was the piercing shriek in her ears as the feminine voice screeched her disdain for the accident. Looking up a little she saw the fancy blue uniform of Beauxbatons.

“Ugh! Watch where you’re going, would you?” the blonde girl said as she got up and started brushing herself off like she had gotten dirty.

‘My bad, princess.’ Keziah bitterly thought as she rolled her eyes.

“Keziah, are you alright?” Sebastian asked as he helped her off the floor and Keziah thanked him.

“You can’t ask me if I’m alright? A guest? She bumped into me!” the girl said before looking at Sebastian as she smiled both rather sweetly to any onlooker, but malicious to those in present company. She can’t help notice he’s rather good looking and from what she’s heard he’s a powerful wizard who is also entering the tournament. She hopes that he gets picked so they might have a chance to spend time together. She can show him that she’s worth looking at more than whoever this girl is. “You would think a handsome guy like yourself wouldn’t belittle himself with rags like her. Don’t pity the weak. Once I win the Triwizard Tournament, I'll be sure to let everyone know beauty is those who take what they want no matter what and aren’t afraid to take others down too. See you around, handsome.”

Keziah took a deep breath remembering to be the bigger person as she saw her wink at the boy she harbors a major crush on. She hasn’t gotten detention during her time at Hogwarts and she doubts being the Hero of Hogwarts will spare her any if she just so happens to jinx the girl to trip and fall flat on her nose. No one would know the Descendo came from her. No one is around to tattle on her and she definitely knows Sebastian won’t, but she decides that it isn’t worth it.

“She was a treat.” Keziah snorted as she walked away.

Sebastian just smiled as he snorted. They both get along so well and it’s the times when her more snarky and blunt personality comes forth is when he sees she’s more than intelligence, courage, and a pretty face. It’s always entertaining and she never fails to make him laugh. In return he does the same just so he can see her smile.

“Don’t listen to her. You can duel circles around her.” Sebastian said. “If she knew what all you’ve done then she’d take those words right back.”

“Ranrok would have probably spat her back out.” Keziah continued the joke, silently thanking him.

The entirety of the Great Hall was filled with chatter. A lot of them were speaking about how they had a chance to be chosen while others wanted to see if their friends would become their champion. Keziah decided to sit with Natty and Poppy near the middle as some of the people she knew who entered had chosen to sit near the front. The doors opened and Sebastian and Ominis walked in. They parted ways after their unpleasant meeting in the hall with him saying he needed to meet with Ominis and would see her later. He mentioned she better holler louder than anyone when he’s chosen as the Hogwarts champion. She promised. His brown eyes looked toward her and she gave him a smile in return and two thumbs up.

“What was that about?” Poppy asked as she nudged her shoulder.

“What do you mean?” Keziah asked, a little confused.

“That thing with Sebastian.” Poppy clarified with a grin.

“Nothing.” Keziah answered. Not completely nothing, but in the moment, it was her being supportive of one of her best friends. “He entered and we are friends so I’m showing him my support in case he’s picked.”

“Sure you are.” Poppy said with a cheeky smile.

Keziah rolled her eyes, but smiled anyway. It wasn’t until she came to Hogwarts and found true friends did she understand how they all talked about each other's personal lives like it was something plastered on the front page of the Daily Prophet.

Natty could only giggle at her defensive responses. She knows her friend well and that she and Sebastian are close. Almost too close, but for the moment, that’s none of her business. Perhaps she can nudge them later on in the year, but for now, they had to focus on other matters than of the heart.

“Isn’t this exciting?” Natty asked to move on and prevent one of her best friend’s from being embarrassed by her crush that is obvious to some and oblivious to others.

“Sure is! This will be the first in such a long time!” Poppy answered.

“Natty, I never got to ask, did you put your name in?” Keziah asked.

“Oh no. My mother pleaded with me not to. She said she’d respect my decision if I chose to or not, but regardless, I decided not to and listened to my mother’s concerns.” Natty answered.

“For once?” Keziah joked with her.

“You are funny, my friend.” Natty said, tapping her on the shoulder and Keziah just smiled. “As much as I willingly went after Harlow and the thought crossed my mind, my mother forewarned that these trials are not for the faint of heart. That she couldn’t bear to watch me take on such challenges.”

Keziah wondered if Professor Onai saw what the trials were going to be. She probably has an inkling. That could turn out to be a valuable piece of information if it were possible. Certainly give the champion enough warning to prepare. She does wonder though if it could be considered cheating.

“Oh geez. Handling poachers and the tournament seem all so different when you put it like that. There aren’t too many people we know. I wonder if any of them will be picked.” Poppy said as she looked around.

Before anyone could comment or continue on, a voice rang out, echoing through the hall.

“Everyone! Settle down!” Spavin called as the entire room silenced as Black stood next to him just grinning, eating up any publicity as someone from the Daily Prophet stood nearby taking notes and a few photographs. “The moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived! It is time for the Champion Selection! First, the Beauxbatons Champion will be–” the Goblet of Fire flashed pink as it came to life. A piece of parchment was spit out a second later and fluttered down like a bird toward his hand. “Astrid Griffith!”

Everyone started clapping as an average height girl with platinum blonde hair and blue eyes stood and was clapping to herself excitedly. She seemed so pleased that she had been chosen.

Keziah immediately recognizes her as the girl she bumped into who blatantly flirted with Sebastian in front of her and insulted her. She shakes her head. They aren’t courting and he isn’t her boyfriend. She shouldn’t be jealous that other girls find him also to be quite handsome and charming. However, the thought crosses her mind that she hopes that Sebastian isn’t chosen. She doesn’t want to manifest it though as it wouldn’t be fair to him who seemed so excited about the events.

Spavin pointed to the Goblet of Fire once again and it flared to life as the second champion was being selected. Another piece of burnt parchment flew out of the flames and fluttered down toward his open hand. He flipped it over and read it aloud.

“The Durmstrang champion is Jarek Ragnar!”

Durmstrang's champion was a tall seventeen year old with dark short hair, a chiseled jawline, and green eyes. He looked at the girls waving and clapping for him before winking. They all squealed before he disappeared.

“And now, the Hogwarts Champion!”

The Goblet of Fire flashed red as it searched within itself for a name. A name it saw as a worthy individual. The only one who would be able to conquer the trials set forth. Once the name flashed through its fire, it knew. No other possible competitor could carry the flame as brightly as it spat the name out that fluttered down.

Everyone held their breath waiting to see who’s name would be called. A stomach churning suspense lied in everyone's stomachs as they waited.

Would it be their name?

Would it be their friend?

Who would fight to take the glory for not only their school, but themselves?

Who would be their champion?

Who’s name–

“Keziah Velho!”

What now?

Keziah’s eyes widened as she felt sick as she whispers erupt throughout the hall. People cheered and clapped as Keziah seemed to lose all senses around her. She felt her friends touch her shoulders and their voices, questions and concerns, went deaf in her ears as well. She thinks she saw two different sets of hands pass her field of vision, but that isn’t where her focus is. Her vision tunneled as she only looked at the Goblet and the adults leading the selection as they grinned toward her.

The students of the two visiting schools looked around at who was the supposed brave soul that would be challenging their champions. Since arriving they’ve heard the rumors. The goblin attack a few months ago was stopped by a student. A singular student who was a witch with immense abilities and skill. They all questioned if this girl would step forward and claim the challenge for herself.

The Hogwarts students all silently whispered about how it made sense that the Hero of Hogwarts would be the appropriate champion for their school. A powerful witch that took down many Goblin Loyalists, Ashwinders, Rookwood, Harlow, and Ranrok himself. Some of the more bitter students snorted that of course said that the glory-hog would do such a thing.

Those whispers reached the visiting students. It was her after all. The hero they’ve been hearing was the competition. They all glared at the girl who everyone was staring at. Sizing up the competition. She didn't look like much as Spavin waved his wand which made Keziah stand on shaking feet. Black had walked toward and grabbed her around the shoulders guiding her.

Keziah could barely hear his words as the man made excuses as to why she didn’t move.

She was shocked.

She was just surprised.

Despite everyone voicing their thoughts around her, Keziah only had one running through her mind.

She never remembered putting her name into the cup so how had her name been chosen?

Keziah doesn’t know if she can do this and will they make her?

Notes:

Uh oh...Keziah has been chosen as an unwilling participant of another set of trials. How will things end up and will she falter? What reasons are behind such a ploy and what other 'side quests' will our other heroes get into!

Chapter Text

Sebastian couldn’t believe what he heard; he was completely dumbfounded. She said on multiple occasions that she wasn’t going to put her name in the cup. She was never the type of person to change their mind when it was clearly made up. He couldn’t help thinking that she lied and didn’t want to tell him, but he quickly dismissed the thought. Curses himself for even thinking about it. She’s never lied to him. They trusted each other since the day they met. He doesn't think he's ever trusted anyone more. She was always so honest with him.

So how was Keziah Velho chosen to be the Hogwarts Champion?

He needs to see her and make sure she’s alright. His brown eyes scan the area to find her own brown eyes widened in what looks to be shock and dare he think, fear. She’s being forcefully led toward the front by Professor Black who looks to have a rather tight grip on her shoulders that he can't tell is hurting her. He’s a foul git if he is. He wants to meet her eyes to give her some support, but she’s forced away from him.

Moments later Spavin takes her by the arm and practically drags her away. He decides he’ll check for bruises on her arm later. He doubts she’ll let him look at her shoulders without getting smacked, but he’s concerned. She doesn’t need more adults, or let alone anyone else hurting her. He feels his stomach tighten in suspense as the minister practically shoves her down the hall before turning around to address them. He’s barely paying attention as the man calls for a round of applause for their champions and to look forward to the first event due to take place in a month. Words he doesn’t bother paying attention to as his own thoughts interrupt.

Her name getting chosen must have been some kind of mistake. They weren't required to put their names in if they were of age; it was completely voluntary. Something she didn’t volunteer for and didn’t have any desire for. Nonetheless, it happened and he doesn’t know what he can do because he knows this won’t end well. She could get hurt and he just has to stand by and watch. Once a trial begins she’ll be in complete solitude.

Sebastian knows that look on her face. He’s seen it only once before.

During the entirety of Professor Fig's funeral she sat at the edge of the Ravenclaw table with such a grief stricken look. She was crumbling. It looked like she was clutching her goblet so tightly it might have snapped in half. She was holding herself together because that was what was expected. She was supposed to sit there and honor him without shedding a tear. She did, but the way her jaw trembled said she was one ‘I'm sorry, I knew you were close’ away from sobbing.

He remembers speaking to her briefly after and she just kept pushing her own feelings aside to tell something she knew he would think was important. It was, but it shouldn’t have been above her own wellbeing. He could see that she was just pushing the feeling away and not wanting to confront them. It was too late as they caught up to her later. He heard from her roommates that for the next couple days she just lied in her bed, crying her eyes out. He should have pulled her aside and gave her his shoulder to cry on. He should have given her a hug like she’s done for him to let her know she wasn’t alone as she thought she was. He understands now she wasn’t just crying for the sake of losing someone she cared about.

He never felt so useless then and those similar feelings are starting to creep back on him again. He feels like they’re going to appear behind him, claw into his shoulders, and hold him down. He can’t, he won’t just sit there and allow all this to happen again. There has to be something he can do to take this unwanted burden off her shoulders.

“Sebastian, wait!” Ominis cried, feeling the bench they shared move as he got up. Blindly, he reached for him to grab his robes or something, but missed. He knew where he was going. He was rashly chasing after Keziah. This wasn’t something he needed to put his nose into. He could get himself into serious trouble acting in such a manner. Certainly the professors would figure something out as they promised to look after her.

Ominis couldn't go through that again. He had hoped the events of last year drilled lessons into his friend’s stubborn head, but that dark, yet admirable, side of him was rearing its head. The pure obsession to help someone he cares for. While noble, he lost himself and he couldn't stand by and listen to that again. Definitely not with Sebastian who was finally getting his head on straight again and now certainly not with Keziah. Who might they lose this time? While Ominis wasn’t close with Solomon, he didn’t want to acknowledge the man getting murdered, and he couldn’t bear to hear someone else die too. He doesn’t have very many people left that he actually gives a damn about and he refuses to lose them due to recklessness, foul play, or their own demons.

Ominis could say he called it. He should have bet galleons on it when Sebastian confided in him that he had ‘more than friends’ feelings toward Keziah. He seems to think ‘feelings’ was a simple term as Sebastian couldn’t shut up about her and constantly worried about her. Despite the numerous times Ominis told him she could take care of herself, he still fretted. While he doesn't share the same romantic feelings, he’s grown to platonically care about her as his friend. She's always tried to do the right thing and find a way out of the messes Sebastian got them into.

He could see the appeal of his friend’s fancy. Sebastian said she always seemed to have some kind of magic when talking to people. Always knowing what they need to hear and being able to help solve any problem. He's certainly been on the receiving end of that quality a number of times already. And yes, he means that’s both thankfully to hear what he needed to hear to move forward and reluctantly that’s he hates to admit it that it’s kind of annoying and gets them into trouble.

Despite coming in as a fifth-year, Keziah is at the top of the class and can solve just about anything put in front of her. Her curiosity about the world around her is what keeps her from sitting down for too long. And she’s certainly creative when combining spells and defeating foes. She’s logical and yet filled with such compassion for others. She truly thinks of what's best for others and what they have to gain from her aid even at the risk of herself. Certainly proving one didn’t need to be in Gryffindor to be brave or a Hufflepuff to be loyal. There was nothing selfish about that girl. A little blunt perhaps, but that's Ominis's favorite aspect about her. Hearing her rather witty remarks make him chuckle.

Ominis let Sebastian know about his disagreement about him eavesdropping on her very private and personal conversation with Professor Weasley. Sebastian made him swear not to tell her. What Sebastian doesn’t know is that Ominis said he understood him not wanting her to know. Teach a little lesson as payback from last year. Ominis knows he’s being a little petty, but he feels like he’s entitled to be after everything they both put him through last year. Ominis had half a mind to tell her that he eavesdropped, but he doesn’t want to stir up trouble.

While he was cross with him about invading her privacy, it did answer some questions that were raised over the summer. From what he understands, she was orphaned at a young age and it seems like she wasn’t treated the best by whoever was caring for her. Professor Fig and her magic awakening saved her from a miserable life. His heart actually hurt for her as it made him think about his own family and the similarities. A dreadful feeling of being unwanted and ostracized. He hated that he knew some of what she was going through. It transforms his animosity toward her at the beginning of last year into guilt. His threats and foul words were probably either something that filled her fear or phrases she’s heard before.

‘Trying too hard.’

Hogwarts made her feel safe and allowed her a chance to have something she never had before. Something he never had either. A real family. One that cares about you, looks after you, and supports your decisions. Ominis decides to at least tell her that he put two and two together and that if she ever wants to talk, he’s all ears. She’s well aware he isn’t figuratively blind and knows he’d figure something out.

Pain and suffering isn’t measurable. He also promised his friend he'd help him with whatever he could within reason. Any absurd plans would be tossed out and he’d tell her Sebastian knows. Ominis knows Keziah won’t let Sebastian do anything like that again and will be rather cross with him. Sebastian currently is at a point where he’s carefully treading with the both of them so he doesn’t upset them again. Is Ominis going to take advantage of that? Possibly, but he guessed that just meant he really does belong in Slytherin after all.

Ominis sighed at the thought. He understands, but Sebastian has learned the hard way of going too far. He’s already lost Anne and he couldn't live with the thought of something happening to her too. This enigma that had been dropped into their lives at the beginning of last year has had such an impact on them. While she may not know it, everyone in school has taken note of her whether she knows or likes it. Admittedly more good, but there are some who aren’t fans. However, it isn’t just because she started school five years late, but because of the strides she's made and the people she helped. One could be the scum of the world and she'd still find some way to help all while getting justice. He’s heard rumors of her swindling someone in Hogsmeade with a Venomous Tentacula as she just walked away smirking.

She doesn’t deserve to be thrown to the mongrels.

Ominis just hopes someone can obtain justice for her just once.

Keziah almost trips as the minister hurries her along to be amongst the other selected champions. Her mind is still back in the other room. She doesn't know what happened and she surely can’t come up with a valid explanation either. Someone had to have been playing some sick joke or selfish thought that the only person Hogwarts could have as its champion was her. She’s not laughing. She’s tired and just wants some peace, but apparently it’s too much to ask for. Getting an explanation for all this also seems like a tall order.

Did the cup even allow someone to put a name in that wasn't their own?

She didn't think such a powerful item could be fooled in an attempt for unfairness, but yet here she was. Perhaps there was a way out of this. There’s a chance she might have a choice, but then it starts her next step in finding out who did this and why. As she reached the room they were gathered in, she saw Astrid and Jarek staring at her. Both of them were eagerly waiting to see their competition.

“You're the Hogwarts champion?” Astrid snorted as she put her flawless nails to her mouth to giggle. “Oh, this will be a piece of cake. I'd bet you'd die in the first round.”

Keziah narrowed her eyes on her.

Instead of saying anything, Jarek simply walked up to Keziah as he looked down at her. Keziah awkwardly looks up at him as he's roughly a good head taller than her. He then grabbed her hand and placed a soft kiss on top. Keziah’s face went red as she pulled it back almost like it burned. No one has greeted her that way before! She's certainly flattered, but her heart belongs to someone else. She’s honestly speechless at such a bold move. However, Jarek didn’t seem bothered by her reaction and chuckled.

“Don't listen to her. She doesn't realize she's in the presence of one of the most powerful witches of our generation. It's an honor to compete in these trials alongside someone as pretty and famed to be the Hero of Hogwarts.” Jarek said sweetly as he smiled at her and winked.

“Excuse me?” Astrid scoffed as she thought the chosen champion was such a laughing stock. This girl was so easily knocked over in the hallway. There was no way this was the same witch that’s been whispered about in the halls. “No way. You're the witch who stopped that goblin rebellion a few months ago? I don't believe it. Even if so, guess I'll just have to see if you're worth the challenge.”

Astrid reminds Keziah of Imelda. Well, at least when they first met on the Quidditch field. Such arrogance that just needed to be taken down a peg. Keziah would be more than happy to do so. Eventually Imelda became something akin to hair for Keziah, meaning she grew on her and couldn't get rid of her, but Keziah already knows this will be different. They won't be somewhat friends when this is all over.

Before anyone could say anything, more so Keziah’s rebutting that she didn't want to face any of them, the door was swung open as the minister, headmaster, and Professor Weasley. Hopefully this means things will get sorted out. Professor Weasley immediately heads toward her, but Keziah doesn’t wait to hear what she has to say.

“Minister Spavin, there has to be a mistake. I didn’t put forth my name.” Keziah said as soon as he appeared.

“And how do we know you’re telling the truth?” Black asked as he looked down at her before anyone else could say anything, especially Professor Weasley, who looked like she was about to intervene.

“Please sir. Why would I lie if I initially put my name in? You've all made it clear that whoever puts forth their name must mean it. I don’t mean it. Professor Weasley, please. I wouldn’t lie to you.” Keziah said, internally biting her tongue from giving him a piece of her mind.

Keziah looks to her and she hopes her eyes tell her what she’s conveying. She’s extending her hand, to an adult, and hopes she’ll help her or at least protect her like she said she would. Keziah is trusting her and wants to know if that trust is granted.

“I know, dear.” Professor Weasley said as she put a comforting hand on her shoulder and gave it a comforting squeeze. “I spoke with Ms. Velho earlier this week and she detested putting her name in. I trust my student as this suspiciously looks to be foul play. Someone had to intentionally put Ms. Velho’s name without her permission. Not to mention being powerful enough to allow the cup to accept it. We can even prove her innocence if we must, but I guarantee you’ll find these claims to be truthful. Mr. Spavin, can’t we just choose a new champion and figure this out? ”

“I say too bad! She is of age so she must compete! A redraw is unheard of! It’s against the rules!” the headmaster from Durmstrang, Angus Harvey, shouted. A rather tall and burly man with quite a bit of facial hair who Keziah thought could pass for a lumberjack or a blacksmith. She’d really hate to be on his bad side or in his way. He definitely reminds her of the Poacher Executioners she met.

“Keziah!”

That voice!

Keziah knew that voice as her eyes widened. She couldn’t believe it and was certainly surprised when she turned around to see Sebastian storming into the room. He had an expression of panic and concern as he immediately found her. She didn’t understand why he was here. Certainly she was aware that all her friends, not to mention the entire bloody school, were going to question her. This conversation could wait until a better time, especially when she knew more information and got it all sorted out. The emotions flashing through his face and eyes told a different story. Was he here because he was worried about her?

“Sebastian, what are you doing here?” Keziah asked as he ran up to her.

Sebastian looked into her equally chocolate brown eyes to see a flurry of emotions through them. Internally he could see as clear as crystal that she was panicking. She was scared. She was worried. She was conflicted. She was staying strong despite everything piling on top of her again. He did however feel a sense of pride and smugness at the fact upon seeing him a flash of relief appeared. He wants to put a hand on her shoulder and give a comforting squeeze hoping to convey what he wants to say, but won’t out loud. He was there for her. He wants to take her hand.

“She didn't put her name in willingly. Allow me to take her place.” Sebastian said after sparing a glance at her and turning toward the officials.

Keziah sharply inhaled.

Sebastian would protect her. He wouldn’t let anything bad happen to her. Not again. There had been too many times that he just stood aside and almost lost her. He remembers after their disagreement last year that she was hurt after he recklessly charged ahead to defeat Goblin Loyalist. She had been too busy yelling at him when one of them got the jump on her. She wasn’t able to cast Protego in time and he struck her. She had a gash on her forehead that was luckily healed with Wiggenweld. He still had to look at the blood on her clothes all night.

Not to mention every trial made him anxious when she eventually explained them to him. This would just like that all over again. Charging ahead into the unknown into potentially life-threatening battles completely alone for the sake of someone making her. The puzzles weren’t too difficult, but the giant armor ancient sentinels or the Graphorn was another story. He didn’t know if she would ever come back. He regrets fighting with her about her goblin friend because apparently she had another trial soon after and he couldn’t find her to apologize to her face. He remembers following her to Professor Fig’s office to catch when they were done speaking, but then Professor Black comes out without her. He searched the castle all day for her and finally gave up and sent her an owl.

Then there was the moment he heard Rookwood had kidnapped her in order to kill her and almost succeeded. And then Harlow and finally Ranrok in the span of just one night! The worst feeling was when a couple students came back screaming about how the new fifth-year had been kidnapped in Hogsmeade and he didn’t know she was alive until she dragged herself to Fig’s funeral. Apparently a couple of those nights were at the Hospital Wing where no one but the teachers were allowed to see her. He almost snuck in if he hadn’t been persuaded by Ominis that if she wasn’t alright then they’d know.

And now he’s learned her life hasn’t always been simple and she’s the one who is truly in pain having to face hardship after hardship all alone. A pain he can’t take away no matter what he does. All he can do is be there and take some of the load off. He’ll beg he has to. Let him take this from her. He couldn’t stand the thought she could die during this contest, these new set of trials.

“This can't be something we’re agreeing to.” Black scoffed. “It would seem in the school's and the game's best interest to have our most heroic student be our champion? It would also be dishonorable to the other competitors. It only makes sense! I say she’s our champion as headmaster!”

Keziah really wished she could tell her ‘headmaster’ to shut it, but she was being respectful. Briefly she considered speaking out of turn to see if he'd expel her then maybe she won't have to participate because then she technically isn't a student. Logically, she doesn’t think it’d go over well and decides it’s best to keep her mouth shut. She considered blackmailing him considering her little galivant around the school as him last year, but for the moment that’s her little secret and the poor soul who had to deliver those remedies. Despite her reservations, she couldn’t help agreeing with the man at least on a basic level of not allowing Sebastian to take her place.

“Sebastian, no. I won’t let you.” Keziah said as she reached out and put a hand on his shoulder.

“Why not?” Sebastian countered, staring directly into her eyes as his eyes blazed with determination. “I put my name in Goblet of Fire so why can’t I?”

“The rules are absolute. You were not chosen.” a voice cut through belonging to the minister. “The Goblet of Fire constitutes a binding magical contract and it has made a decision. Ms. Velho has no choice. The moment that slip of parchment was chosen, Ms. Velho became the Hogwarts Champion. Whether she wants to or not.”

Keziah looked at Professor Weasley as she looked at her with saddened expressions as her breath shook. She bit her lip as she tried to keep everything in check. She couldn't bear to look at either of the two people on her side and their pitying expressions. She felt like she was drowning. She couldn’t breathe and couldn’t think. Everything just seemed to be muffled.

She knows that it wasn’t Professor Weasley’s fault. Again, magic had bound her to a responsibility she didn’t ask for and she couldn’t help thinking about how it could end the same way. Someone she cared about, as a mentor and parental figure, had died for her. What if someone else dies? What if she dies? And why would someone force her to play their sick games? The Triwizard Tournament just felt like another version of the Keeper Trials again. She couldn’t do it. Not right now. She needed time and everyone staring at her wouldn’t give her. She needs to figure this out the only way she knows how, alone. Get her thoughts together and come back to this once things have calmed down.

“Well then, I think this Triwizard Tournament will be our most exciting yet! Good luck to our champions and your headmasters will be in touch as we move forward!”

Sebastian bit his lip as he turned to one of his best friends. He doesn’t know what to say to her to make all the pressures, worries, and dreadful feelings go away. He isn’t like her and just knows what to say. He usually makes a snarky comment and sometimes gets her to laugh. He knows this isn’t the time for jokes. He wants to take her into his arms and hold her tight, but he knows she’ll just fight him. She’s always the one to initiate any physical contact and she tenses whenever he does it. Maybe this will be the time as he steps toward her and reaches out. What he doesn’t expect, upon barely touching her arm, is for her eyes to widen like a deer in Lumos and bolt out of the room.

“Keziah! Wait!” Sebastian yelled as she ran up the stairs. He hears a couple people comment behind him, but he can’t listen to him. He can only listen to his heart pounding and his desire to chase after her. Before he could move he felt a light hand touch his shoulder. He turned to see a red-haired professor looking at him with soft eyes.

“I think it’s best to give her time, Mr. Sallow.” Professor Weasley said in a gentle tone. “She’s got a lot weighing down on her and needs time to sort it out herself. While I say she’ll eventually need her friends, right now she doesn’t need them badgering her. Let her come to you unless we need to reach out to her.”

“Fine.” Sebastian agreed reluctantly although he felt like he had a choice. He could chase after her and tell her that he’s going to be with her every step of the way, but he understands. Right now, she doesn’t want to hear any of that. She won’t listen to anything, but the weights of her own responsibilities. She wants to be alone. He just hopes she doesn’t do anything rash.

Keziah just kept running. She ignores anyone who tries to talk to her in the hallways and corridors. Just because she ignores them doesn’t mean that she can’t hear them. She hears their shouts and whispers calling her a liar, glory-hog, and even those who congratulate her, wishing her the best of luck and that she'll do Hogwarts proud. She thinks she might hear a couple of her friends call her name. She doesn't dare go back to the common room knowing her housemates would corner her. She just needed to be alone. She needed a safe place, away from prying eyes to just not be anywhere that reminds her of everything inside these great walls.

There was no one to stop her as she ran her way up the Astronomy Tower from the Great Hall. As soon as she entered the hallway, she pleaded as a set of metal doors appeared and opened by themselves. They started to appear as she reached the hall as if the school knew she needed to escape. In seconds, Keziah found herself in her own space within the Room of Requirement. No one knew about this place but her, Professor Weasley and Deek and she was beginning to think she preferred it that way.

“Ms. Keziah! Deek is surprised to see you!” Deek said happily upon seeing her come in. He’ll always say he’s happy to help out a witch like her and is glad to call her his friend. She takes such good care of the beasts and oftentimes helps him clean. He’s grateful.

He told Professor Weasley that Hogwarts should be proud to have such a positive student walk around its halls. She was so kind to every living being from her fellow classmates, house-elves, and to the beasts she rescued. She did him favors, for his own selfish peace of  mind despite her claiming otherwise that she was helping a friend, and never asked for anything in return. It was fascinating to watch her interact with her saved magical creatures as they all ran toward her the moment she stepped into their vivariums.

However, her arrival does confuse him. He had thought she’d be at the selection ceremony to cheer on her classmates and further immerse herself into their world that she had only been a part of for a short while. She even mentioned hanging out with friends afterward and had been excited to do so. It makes him happy that she looks happy considering their kindred spirits. While he wasn’t told the truth, she alluded to that she had a less than pleasant upbringing. He hopes to know the truth one day as he confided in her, but he knows how hard it is to trust. He felt sorry for her and is glad she’s with them now.

Keziah didn’t trip, but she might as well have collapsed in the middle of the floor onto the rug. She ignored the sting in her palms as said rug caused carpet burns. Instead, she crumpled, grasping the sides of her hair as she finally could just sob like she's been wanting to since her name was picked. She lays her head on the floor. She knows she must look like a damn fool or she’s overreacting, but she doesn’t know what to do. For the moment, she doesn’t care.

She’s scared. She feels like she has to go into this alone or someone could end up dead.

Her sobs echoed throughout the main area reaching each of the vivariums. Unknown to the witch and house-elf, the anguish cries weren’t silenced as every beast raised their head looking toward the exit to their safe homes at the sound of the echoing pained cries of their friend and unspoken master.

Did she need them? They were ready to peck, scratch, stick their tongues at, and trample anyone who hurts her.

What did she do to deserve any of this?

Why couldn’t her safe haven leave her that way?

Gaia, the Lord of the Shore, roared. His friend showed true strength and compassion to earn his loyalty and he wouldn’t allow her to get hurt again. He remembers as they rode toward some secret destination that a poacher shot her right off him knocking her unconscious. He showed them why he shouldn’t be trifled with and laid next to her, protecting her, until she awoke. She didn’t question what he did, she just thanked him for staying by her side. He just wished he could see if she needed him. Hopefully the other creature that comes to check on him will see to her needs.

 “Oh my! Are you alright?!”

Keziah didn’t say anything but further curled in on herself as she cried. This unexplainable fear she couldn't name. Was it because this adventure could end the same as her last? Was she scared for herself? It truly cemented when Professor Weasley called it foul play. This seemed like it would be much more dangerous than fighting off loyalists, Ashwinders, and Ranrok himself.

She felt a gentle hand touch her shoulder and she jumped.

“Oh. Deek is sorry for scaring Ms. Keziah. Come on, Deek will help you sit up.” Deek apologized as he helped her get up from the hard floor. While he always made sure they were clean, they certainly couldn’t be comfortable.

Keziah was sitting on her knees just staring at nothing around as tears continued to stream down her face. She’s feeling worse than she did moments ago. She knows the room has an echo and she’s probably spooked all her beasts. She hates that she scared Deek too. The house-elf has been nothing but kind and now it's her turn to cause an issue. She hopes he doesn’t feel obligated to help her. She should have just gone somewhere else, left the castle if she needed to, for she knows plenty of places, but this place made her feel so welcome and loved. A small hand entered her line of sight.

“Come on now. Deek will help you up and get to the couch.” Deek said as he gently took her hand and helped her stand. Slowly they walked hand in hand as their feet shuffled toward the corner Keziah created to just relax and even nap in. A black couch with a lamp and a small stool in front of it. There were several pillows and a soft blanket as well. Sometimes her Kneazles, Mooncalves, Nifflers, or Puffskeins will come out just to cuddle with her. She has a personal favorite, but won’t say, not wanting to upset the others. Some of her larger beasts have certainly tried as well, but of course they don’t exactly fit.

As they walked to the corner, Keziah just cried harder. She didn’t think she had that many tears left to give. She felt so weak right now having been a sobbing angry mess all week. She snapped at Sebastian and Ominis, sobbed in front of Professor Weasley as she reluctantly shared her deep rooted dreadful origin. Bloody hell, she even got sympathy from Professor Sharp which was apparently unheard of. Apparently all it took was one little note to make it happen. She didn’t think she could face anyone, especially her friends, right now as she was. Not that the thought mattered too much as a friend was here too.

Deek was always so nice and helped her with anything she might need. It took a little while, but she finally convinced him to call her Ms. Keziah rather than Ms. Velho. She never could get him to drop the ‘Ms’. He said it was respectful and she responded that friends call each other by their given names. Seeing a spark of joy in Deek’s eyes was worth it. She wonders now if she had stayed in the room over the summer, would Deek have told anyone? Would he have protected her secret or be conflicted with loyalties? She was glad she didn’t try it as she would have hated to put him through that inner turmoil.

Deek felt his heart breaking for her as he felt conflict within himself as he helped Keziah sit on the couch. His heart quickened as she just simply fell over with head plopping on the cushion and her blank stare with tears slowly leaking out. Not even bothering to openly cry out whatever frustrations and grief plagued her anymore.

Should he comfort her?

He didn’t know what was wrong and wondered if he should get Professor Weasley. He hated not knowing how to help this kind soul. One of the kindest witches he had the pleasure of working for. Or as she told him, with her. Seeing her so distraught wasn’t something he ever wanted to see. She had done so much for him from venturing into a spider infested cave to look for Tobbs to rescuing the phoenix to help not only this majestic creature, but help his guilt. He snapped his fingers as a blanket moved to drape on her as he then snapped again to disappear.

This time he’d help her.

Professor Weasley looked on at the group she gathered not long after the champion selection ceremony. Immediately as it ended she said they could no longer wait and called them to her office. The way the event ended was highly unsettling and needed to be brought to their attention. A group she gathered many times before and was planning to meet in the near future. She just dreaded that they had to meet under such unfortunate circumstances.

“Thank you all for coming.” Professor Weasley said as she looked at Professors Sharp, Hecat, Onai, and Ronen. All these professors had one thing specifically in common. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust the others, like Garlick, but they had seen first hand the perils their special interest student had faced and triumphed. However, it wasn’t without sacrifices.

“What is the meaning of this, Matilda?” Professor Onai asked.

“I’m sure you’re aware that Keziah Velho has been chosen as the Hogwarts Triwizard Champion.” Professor Weasley stated.

“I’m sure she’ll do a fantastic job in representing our school.” Professor Ronen said happily. He was quite surprised to find out she had chosen, but the child had always been to tackle any challenge put in front of her.

Professor Weasley sighed which didn’t go unnoticed and caused a growing concern.

“What is it?” Professor Sharp asked, noticing something wrong.

“Ms. Velho did not put her name into the Goblet of Fire.” Professor Weasley revealed and she could see the various shocked expressions. “I had spoken with her a few days prior and she confided in me what we already knew. That’s also another reason why I wanted to speak to you all. What Professor Fig informed us about is true. The child has no home to return to and I have confirmed my suspicions she spent her summer in hiding. However, that is a matter for later. She’ll need our support as she’s still reeling from the events of Ranrok, but that will be as we go. We need to focus on providing whatever aid the ministry allows for the tournament. Professor Sharp, I have a task for you and I do hope you’ll see through with whatever means.”

“What is it?” Professor Sharp asked.

“As I stated, she didn’t willingly enter. I want you to find the person who put forth her name and why.” Professor Weasley instructed.

“Understood.” Professor Sharp answered.

“If any of you have any information, please let me know. I would like to get to the bottom of this before whatever reason for this unfortunate circumstance is revealed.” Professor Weasley said.

Everyone nodded as they looked at their head of charge. Since the end of last year they all gathered and created their own order. A selected group of professors who would protect this student. The student who all year, right under their noses, was single handedly saving the world while trying to catch up in her studies. This student who literally carried the weight of the world on her back and the least they could do is put their hands behind her and support her.

Professor Weasley nodded. They make sure this time she wouldn’t be completely alone and from what she’s heard from her friends, they wouldn’t allow that either. Before she can dismiss them a sound interrupts them of someone Apparating in.

“Professor Weasley! Deek is sorry to interrupt, but Deek comes to you on an urgent matter!” the house-elf cried as he ran toward her.

In all her years of knowing Deek, Professor Weasley thinks she’s never seen him in such a frantic state. She can’t possibly imagine what could have happened to make him this concerned.

“What’s the matter, Deek?” Professor Weasley asked.

“It’s Ms. Keziah! She came bursting into the room in tears! Deek left her to get you straight away as Deek was unsure of what to do!” Deek explained frantically.

“I'm not surprised, Deek. She's been through a lot this week. Please do keep a watchful eye on her for the time being.” Professor Weasley asked.

Professor Weasley sighed. She isn't surprised that the moment Keziah ran from the champion's selection she went straight to the Room of Requirement to be alone. She honestly didn't know what to do. She can’t possibly begin to understand what’s going through that child’s head. They’re just going to have to take this as it comes, one day at a time. For the moment, making sure she was alright and kept well was all she could think of. Also making sure she attended her classes. She didn't think that'd be an issue. She was a studious girl who never skipped class unless for a good reason. Her heart bleeds for the girl as she keeps getting pulled into predicaments she didn't ask for. At least this time they'll do everything within their power to help her.

“It would be an honor for Deek!” Deek said as he snapped, disappearing back to the room.

Despite Professor Weasley telling him to give Keziah time, Sebastian didn’t listen. He searched everywhere in the castle for her and nothing. She wasn’t in her dorm, which he didn’t expect her to be, and didn’t blame her for not returning, but asked anyway. Better to be safe than sorry.

Everyone in the Ravenclaw common room was in a frenzy. They were either looking for Keziah or trying to convince everyone to leave her alone wherever she may be. Only Amit, Samantha, and Everett seemed to be the only ones not wanting answers and fending off ravenous vultures. Some of the others just wanted to get close to her just because her name will now go further down in the history books. He can see why she rarely returns to her room. He’d imagine no matter which house she got sorted into, the students would be all the same.

Although their houses are like their families, Keziah is probably just reminded about how she wasn’t really wanted by her own. Or in this case, the family just wants something from her. He almost lost his temper and screamed at them, but he left before that happened. Stomping away before he hexed them, but at least the three told him if they saw her they’d let him know.

He honestly didn’t know where else to check so he took a couple shots to see if they paid off.

Sebastian doesn’t tell Keziah that he knows this, but at the end of last year, after the death of Professor Fig, he knows Keziah liked to sit in his office. She did so alone surrounded by all his books, sitting in the chairs by the fireplace. He remembers her once talking about how they’d sit there and just talk about anything that came to mind. Granted it was usually about her studies or Ranrok, but it was still enjoyable to just relax and have a conversation with someone she could truly be honest with. He doesn’t think she’ll go there now, especially with Professor Eugenia taking up the space, but it doesn’t hurt to check she might be in the area on one of the benches just wanting to feel close to him.

That was a bust.

While he’s in the Defense Against the Dark Arts area of the Astronomy Tower, he checks the Undercroft to find it completely empty. Considering only three people in the entire school know about the secret location, that would have a prime spot for wanting to be alone. Although it’s not as comfortable, it does the job. Before leaving, he can’t help looking at the blank canvas with the pensive in front of it and thinking about how much trouble that all really caused. So much has happened and the scene of their fight sometimes keeps him up.

He truly is sorry. Sorry for everything. She probably figured he and Ominis would come looking for her thus avoiding the place. She wouldn’t be wrong; she’s hardly ever wrong.

He’s run out of ideas and offhandedly thinks that perhaps Natty or Poppy might have snuck her into their common rooms. However, he figures it’ll just be the same mess that the Ravenclaw one was in so sums it up to not be plausible. He does however make a note to owl each of them to see if they’ve seen her and if they do, to let him know. He also plans to send her an owl as well and bribe Ajax to be nice to her. He’s aware how much the owl adores his owner, but he’s a little cheeky bugger. The barn owl likes to see her smile as much as he does.

In the end, Sebastian trugged into the Slytherin common room right before curfew. School has just started and he doesn’t need to start racking up detentions. As he slowly trudges down the stairs he hears quite a few voices talking and he recognizes what they’re talking about. It’s everywhere. It’s what everyone is talking about.

“Do you think she lied?”

“Probably didn’t want to scare off any competition. I mean, come on, who would want to go up against her. Rumor is that she’s the Cross Wands champion and no one can beat her in a duel.”

“The scariest thing they did was put a wand in that girl’s hand.”

Sebastian bit his lip trying to control himself. Yes, he’ll agree that Keziah Velho is a force to be reckoned with. He won’t confirm the rumors since Cross Wands is a secret, sort of, but they’re true. Keziah is unmatched and has never lost as she’s been titled champion. He should know since he’s always her partner. He’s seen firsthand how deadly her spell combinations can be, especially since she’s learned how to fully master each spell and infuse her ancient magic into each one. However, he wouldn’t say she’s scary. Anyone should be thankful that she’s their ally and has such compassion in her heart.

“Do you think she’s doing it just to be noticed? Isn’t being the ‘Hero of Hogwarts’ enough? So selfish.”

“I agree. I bet she didn’t want to tell anyone, afraid we’ll call her out for wanting all the glory. I mean it’s obvious. Ever since she’s gotten her, she just wants everyone’s attention. Just wanted to make sure she wasn’t forgotten about again–”

“Shut your damn mouths!”

Everyone in the common room stopped and looked toward Sebastian. His eyes flared with anger. How dare they all sit there and talk about her that way? She helped save all of them and they gossip about whether or not she’s worried about being left behind. Keziah isn’t worried about any of that. Her concerns are valid. She’s worried about having a place to sleep, having a home to return to, and whether or not she’ll get to spend time with her friends. While Sebastian wants to hang out with her too, he does have a slight ulterior motive in hopes she notices that he wants to be more than friends.

She wants to be a normal girl. Well, as normal as a powerful witch, with a rare ability to wield a lost form of magic, can be.

Sebastian wondered something though. If he didn't know what did, about her life before, would he be this protective? He thinks so. No, he knows so. She's done so much for him and he only wants to help keep her safe from the demons she's had to push away for the sake of other people. She is one of his best friends and has always stood by him. He snorted thinking it was just time for him to pull his head out of his ass to return her kindness.

“It’s alright lover boy, I was about to tell these knuckleheads the same thing.” Imelda said as she came to his side.

“You’re not helping.” Sebastian deadpanned.

“Sebastian.” Ominis said, as he pulled his friend’s arm. “Just let them. They’re going to talk whether we intervene or not. There’s no point in causing a scene.”

“Ominis–” Sebastian tried to argue.

“I know. Let’s not give them more to talk about.” Ominis said as he nudged him to come back to their room. It seems like Sebastian’s search was in vain and he hopes they’re able to locate her soon. Like him, like all her friends, they’re worried about her.

Sebastian really didn’t want to just let it go. However, his friend was right as usual. People were going to talk no matter what he or anyone said. He was just so angry. He hadn’t got a chance to talk to her, but he understood Keziah had not entered willingly. Once he found out who did so, he was going to make them regret it. How dare they toy with someone, someone he cared about, like that? He would make it part of his personal mission to find out.

“Hey, lover boy.” Sebastian rolled his eyes at Imelda’s most recent nickname. She started calling him at the end of last year when she caught him staring at her from the Slytherin to Ravenclaw table. Why doesn’t she just tell the whole school about his crush on her? Save him the trouble of telling her himself.

“What? And stop calling me that.”

“Um, no. You man up and tell her how you feel and we’ll talk. Now onto my question. Is it true?”

“Is ‘what’ true?”

“That she didn’t put her name in?” Imelda clarified.

Sebastian bit his tongue not to turn around and yell at her too, but he sees that her question isn’t in any form of malice. Keziah and Imelda have an odd friendship from what he’s been told. When he questioned Keziah about it she said it was random and just came out of nowhere after she beat all her times in the flying trials. Something about proving herself which Keziah didn’t think she had to do. She explained it as Imelda just had to grow on her. They have friendly competitions and push each other to do better, but don’t necessarily go out of each other’s way to hangout. Imelda isn’t asking because she’s bitter that she wasn’t chosen; she’s asking because she’s concerned for someone she sees as her friend.

“Yeah, it’s true. She didn’t enter and they’re making her compete whether she wants to or not.” Sebastian confirmed.

“Well then why aren’t you being her shoulder to cry on?”

“If I knew where she was, don’t you think I’d be there?” Sebastian asked instead, answering her question. He isn’t quite giving her the satisfaction with her subtle comment.

“She’ll come around and then you can be her knight in shining armor.” Imelda said as she laughed to herself as she walked toward her dorm room smirking at her now less subtle comment.

Knight in shining armor, huh? Sebastian wanted to be that so badly for her. She’s certainly come to his rescue enough times. He tried to, but was only spat in the face. While he wanted to compete to challenge himself, taking on this burden would mean that he would be giving up the chance to protect her. Maybe even show that she could depend on him. He can still do so, even if it’s not how he planned. He’d do whatever he could. For now she was the knight going up against any battle that was tossed her way. That just meant he’d be her armor, shielding her from what he could, no matter what it is.

Notes:

She's having a rough day and is experiencing such confliction. Don't worry, she'll get her hug! After the next chapter I hope to pick up into a few things like what the others are up to and eventually...the first trial!

Next chapter is where I'm going to change something up and it's also the last of the previous written stuff so it might be a little slower. I also wanna work on my others works too since I'm off for a couple days. Here's to hoping to get somethings done. I'm also happy announce that each house will have it's own character and story to go along with it! They won't be up for a while, but something to share along with some ambiguous character story which are more reader-insert/not named.

Anyway! Hope you enjoyed the chapter and the overall story! Hope you're all doing well!
Thanks for reading and hope you'll stay tuned for the next chapter! See you! (o´ω`o)
