Chapter 1: Breaking Through Glass
Chapter Text
Compared to the bright candle lit streets of the district, the alley maze covered in shadow feels like another world. But despite the darkness Cassiopa focuses on the fleeting target. The one she's following is a recent acquaintance, that's what she labeled the relationship at least. A real simple lady at heart, if anyone had saved her from a building sized soulless, that was at least a top tier first impression. She would have liked that to be the only reason, but it wasn't, no it was something much more calculated.
Cassiopa kept her quick pace through each turn of the alley. (“I basically crawled my way here to get to that tower, and if what I heard is true, I'll need all the help I can acquire!”)
The Snobium, a place that holds the pinnacle of knowledge. The last chance of you finding a cure for your cursed touch. You came here for the Snobium, you'll get to the Snobium, is what she pressed into her head throughout the journey. Sadly almost every person and monster she came to have said a similar opinion. ‘Stay away from the Snobium, their trouble.’ to summarize it.
But has Cassiopa ever listened to the warning signs in her path? When has that helped in her life, it's her own which got her out her cage and set a path to freedom. All she has to do is set herself free from this curse.
If ONLY she could catch up to this slippery acquaintance!
(“How can an individual be so quick in a place like this! Maybe growing up in the grand halls of a castle has its disadvantages…”) As Cassiopa cursed the one's agility she finally stopped in front of the wider alley leading into an open area. But no hooded figure to be found. No hiding places or hidden shadows found and no signs of a passerby.
Yet she doesn't frown or curse, she grins huffing a short chuckle. She turns around with a smile. (“Color me intrigued, not many people can sneak up on me like that.”)
“Didn't you learn your lesson earlier?” Said the hooded figure with an eyebrow raised and arms crossed.
“This very encounter will be worth plenty for the danger that might come, Mihn.” Cassiopa twirls around facing them.
“And when that danger inevitably comes I'm sure you expect me to save you AGAIN. Here I was thinking almost getting eaten would teach you not to wander alone at night.” They sneer.
“Good thing I'm not alone.”
After a few seconds of confusion they stiffen their posture back. If Cassiopa was an inch farther from Mine, she wouldn't notice the blush creeping across their cheeks. “Are you always this persistent?”
The gap between Mhin’s mood switches astounds Cassiopa every time, yet it brings a certain charm to them. In her opinion of course. “In this situation all I can be is persistent. Do you know how hard it is to follow you-”
“Then don't follow me.” Mhin passes Cassiopa and reaches the end of the alley. They peer their head around the corner and glancing at another tavern - according to the sign - for a few seconds. Then turn back to me. “Look, you've gotten lucky so far, but to think that anyone will save you again is stretching it thin…You can't trust anyone here.”
“Even you?”
“Especially me.”
Cassiopa pauses, that didn't sound like a threat, more like a warning, and it wasn't clear if it was meant for herself or Minh. “I would beg to differ.” She smiles.
“Why's that?” Mhin glares.
Before she could answer, a slam of a door colliding jumped into the conversation. Mhin glances back at the tavern. Cassiopa frowns at the lack of attention then walks to peer over the corner as well.
A small crowd of drunks dressed in white walk out the building. Cassiopa tilts her head, she recognizes the emblem on their coats, the same emblem on the Snobium’s guard that kicked her out. (“Snobium students having a night on the town.”)
Before she could finally comment, Mhin dashes across the street in the crowd's direction. Cassiopa’s frown furrows a bit more, then follows close to Mhin’s heel to their chagrin. “Why are you still following me?” Mhin whispers
“You said not to wander alone at night.” She whispers back.
“Oh now you listen to me?” They whispers louder.
“I don't like being interrupted, AND you haven't heard my answer.”
The students soon trip into another bar. Both the stalkers stop and hide around another corner. Mhin sighs then looks back at Cassiopa. “Tell me this first: Why are you here, why are you following, and what is so important to risk running around with me?” They lift their chin to glare right into her eye.
“...You were there earlier today weren't you?” The question wasn't very specific, but it still shook Mhin nonetheless. She grins, finally getting their attention.
“You seem to be the only one I've met that isn't exactly opposed to the Snobium. The only one that sticks close to their heel.” She could see them slowly figure out what the question meant and they didn't look happy.
Mhin sighs, looking down sullenly. “You must have heard of the biggest source of knowledge in the world, the Snobium. You have a question no one else can answer, they can probably give you a solution.”
“Yet they're gates are closed shut.” She adds
They continue, “Whatever solution you crave, the price might be higher than you think.” Mhin glances at Cassiopa’s bandaged hands. Their eyes hold curiosity and precision as sharp as a knife.
“Many have said ‘knowledge is a base currency here’, when in Eridia do what Eridians do.” She opens her arms in confidence.
Mhin crossed their arms, “Didn't seem like you were willing to trade when we first met.” They look in to Cassiopa grinning face.
“What info are you looking for?” she inches closer. Mhin quickly shrinks back at the sudden saucy tone, a tint of pink creeps back up on them.
“I-It just doesn't seem like you know the gravity of the trade you want to deal in.”
Now that really ticks her off. In the life of Cassiopa, her number one pet peeved is bystanders underestimating her wit and topped with the hypocrisy of Mhin's words seem to really grind her gears. “You still speak of this nonsense when you're doing the exact same thing as me. What solutions are you looking for in those towers? What are you willing to trade?”
“I-That's personal.” They step an inch back.
(“So they do have something to solve, to fix. Now we're getting somewhere!”) She inches closer. “We might be in a more similar situation than you think. Everyone else won't even question the thought of seeing the Snobium for a solution. But not you.”
The gaze of curiosity coats Mhin's eyes once again. But now Cassiopa doesn't know why, was it her ever lasting persistence, her mystery hands, or her surprisingly observant takes caught their eye. Whatever it is she can't let this opportunity slip through her cursed fingers.
“Please excuse my assumptions but from what I can tell there's something you can't figure out, and maybe not even Leander or Kuras, to be specific, won't tell you about the Snobium.” Cassiopa clenches her fists. “There's something they're not telling you…which means you might be an outsider like-!”
In one breath Mhin is the one closing the gap between the two. Then in one swift motion, a hand grabs Cassiopa's collar, then sends her against the wall behind the poor lady. Quickly shutting up by the unwarranted change of position. They're slender fingers tightening their hold by each second, after the shock, Cassiopa notices the smaller ones strength, easily picking them up on her tippy toes.
(“Oh shit-”)
The sudden action leaves Mhin's hood gliding off their dove white hair. Giving a good view of their ignited rage. A shiver runs down Cassiopa’s spine. It's been a while since she saw so much…passion, it took a lot of will to suppress her adrenaline.
She ignores her cold sweat and breaks the stare down, “May I ask what I misconceived this time-?!”
“You don't know shit about me and you definitely don't know what the fuck you're talking!”
“...” The snark in Mhins tone drew Cassiopa's gaze to the beauty mark next to their lips. Without that damn hoodie she would describe they're looks as a delicate beauty, like admiring a flower garden at midnight. But their gaze held a sense of danger and mystery. She was trying to find something there, anything that could explain the feeling in her gut. It was new, it was exciting, it was frightening all at once.
If it wasn't for her annoyance rising in her throat she would be speechless, “Then please enlighten me how stalking Snobium students and loitering across their walls helps you?”
Mhin clicks their tongue, “Your line of questioning aren't helping you either. I would expect a bit more of a subtle approach.”
“Subtly is not my strong suit.” Cassiopa averts their gaze.
“I can tell, and I can also tell that all this has something to do with your hands. You think you can prance around and expect to get into those walls using me? Well that's not how life works!”
As Mhin continued their verbal assault Cassiopa soon realized the lump in her throat. Its not hard to annoy and even enrage this lady, but to bring that rage out is an astonishing feat. Her life has been built off of pleasantries and social status, self expression was a forbidden code less said. Something Mhin seems to pry out of her quite often.
“So you think you can get anywhere like this?!” She grabs the leather cuff on Mhin's gripping arm. “You're stuck! Yet your head is far up your ass you can't even ask for help, and that's your own damn fault.” She grits her teeth before letting anything else slip out.
To her surprise Mhin is quite, their grip loosening, gaze dropping to the side avoiding Cassiopa’s gaze. Frustration and misery is contagious, her thinking she went too far with her attack, as Mhin is stunned.
(“Oh shit…”) This wasn't her plan, she wanted to make an alliance not an enemy, another lesson learned in being overtaken by emotions. Nothing came out of anger and she knew that. Maybe she was naive. Maybe they were right, they were all right.
“…I know…” Mhin’s voice trembles. Cassiopa couldn't help it as her gaze grew wider. Mhin's head droops down inches away from her aching chest. “This city takes everything you can give, and spits you out with nothing. Information. Power. Connection. Yet after everything you wound up with nothing…”
This rang in Cassiopa’s ears, a taste of nostalgia tingling on her tongue. The walls of a castle and the ins and outs of Eridia might not be so different.
Mhin continues, “If you're an outsider here, there's no one to help you. No one to try and reach out to you. You-”
“Don't belong.” Mhin looks up to meet her soft gaze, the grip holding their cuff softens, her fingertips only grazing the leather. She feels her feet lay flat on the ground. “If that is the case, then please allow me to help, allow me to reach you and try. Please?” Then places her hand on her chest. (“Maybe if I heard these words before, maybe my home would've felt so lonely as well.”)
Now Mhin is the one surprised as they're gaze widens, brow furrowed upward. They look away. Have they always looked so fragile? Like me.
Then in one second Mhin backs away, releasing their hands, making sure to not slap Cassiopa's hand away. The lady looks to Mhin, trying to figure out what went wrong this time.
The poor hunter stepped back cautiously, they blush more prominent than the last time. This helped her realize how close they were and how strange her response was. (“T-that was a lot on my part huh?”) She looks back up at Mhin, they can barely look at her in the eye, a hand rubbing the other that held and threatened her a moment ago. That pink blush appearing once more.
("But...") Cassiopa decides this time to slowly approach Mhin, making sure to be conscious of their expression, posture, and movements. “Mhin…”
Once the hunter notices her walking up to them, they back up to the wall. “Why…why go so far here, why reach out like this. The Snobium won't let you in so easily-”
“I'm not reaching out to those closed gates.” Cassiopa makes sure to stop a few feet away from them. “I want to reach you, I need you Mhin, and I know you need help as much as I.”
“...” Mhin angles their head down, closing their eyes. “What do you think you can get out of me, you definitely aren't the first.”
There it is again something in the pit of her stomach, but this is different. She hates this feeling, loathes it really, yet she's felt it a hundred times more. “So you think I don't realize the risk, despite everything, I'm still here. Don't assume that I'm doing this on a whim.”
“...If you get too close, you'll get hurt.” Mhin concludes.
It was a matter of fact a warning, but in the back of Cassiopa's mind she felt it wasn't meant for her but for the one conveying it. (“It seems you're the one scared of getting close, of getting ‘hurt’.”) She sighs. “Then let's try it out before ‘I’ get hurt!”
“What?”
“A ‘Trial Period’ people call it. Give me a specific amount of time and I'll show what I can do.”
A brow is raised in response, “You WANT to put yourself on trial.”
“I haven't committed anything yet!”
“No that's not what I-”
“Look aside from all the many crimes we can commit together, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, just think it over for a little while.”
This time another slam of a door rings out, and even politely waited for Cassiopa to finish her sentence, how nice of them. The crowd of students burst through the doorway, seeming more intoxicated than the last. This time heading towards the Snobium.
(“Are all the students this carefree?”) Cass sighs. Then notices that Mhin slips away from her before she realizes. The hunter pulls up their hood and is walking out the alley. “Mihn!” Cassiopa yelps.
The hunter turns around with impatience in their step.
“Please think about it.” She says, a tint of desperation, that she would rather hide, slipping out.
“Hm.” The sound is quick and quiet, as their lips pert lips form a small pour. Then they're gone. Leaving Cassiopa a red mess, she slaps her palm over her eyes then runs it through her hair. As she glides over her eyes patch she takes a deep breath. (“That could've gone waaaaaay better…”)
~
Soon enough Cassiopa finally finds her back to the Wet Wick, the chatter less prominent but bustling nonetheless. She opens the door to see Leander still managing the bar, talking to a few bloodhounds. The whole bar accompanies crowded booths, tables, and clinking drinks, it was like they were each celebrating for their own day.
(“The parties here are more welcoming than back home. It's more warm and bright.”) She walks by the tables basking in the warm light, realizing how cold she was in that alley, shivering from the change in climate.
“Cass.” She knew just by the he nicknamealone and there was a select few that used that nickname, whether she liked it or not.
Leander waves her down as she's about to head up the stairs. She huffs and turns, walking to the bar.
“I see you're still working well into the night.” As she approaches, Leander waves the others down. He sets his forearms on the counter leaning towards Cassiopa.
“Well I couldn't help but notice that our new guest went out for a stroll.” He says with a big smile, squinting his sunken eyes.
“Ah, well, there was something I wanted to ask one of my new friends, I get awfully curious. Especially in a town so…unique.” Cassiopa knew better than mentioning the Snobium here, and she wasn't willing to try that again. Of course the leader of said group wouldn't be happy with a newcomer getting involved with the enemy. Even though she could feel it in her gut that this man knows ...something!
“Well someone has already scolded me for letting you out at night without warning, so please be a little mindful of where and when you take a stroll through this city.”
Cassiopa ignored his concerned brow and charming glamor. “Don't worry I got another ear full from them, trust me I learned my lesson.” She says, grinning.
Leander tilts his head “Huh really, you met up with Mhin again?”
“Of course.” She stretched her grin and squinted her eyes. “Is something wrong?”
“Ah, no of course, I'm just surprised you lasted an hour long conversation with them. I don't know if you can tell but their not the most ecstatic when it comes to social interaction.”
“Then I alone am the exception.” She grins, turning toward the staircase on a high horse.
After a hearty chuckle, Leander waves his hand, “Good night Cass.”
“Good night.” She replied, her back facing him.
It was quite and the only source of light was the 2 windows in front and to the right of Cassiopa. The moon shines down in the dim room, helping assess her surroundings. The room isn't half bad actually. The room was placed in the corner of the Wet Wick so the ceiling was slanted on the roof side, but it felt spacious.
A sigh of relief escapes the ladies lips. “I'm glad I'll have more than enough room for this.” She reaches into her deep cloak pocket, metal clinks as she gathers every piece.
Her hands form a sphere around the items and dashes to the roof window in front of her. Then dropping the contents in a messy pile.
She breaths once more, and after the rise and fall of her chest, she takes out a piece of charcoal.
Cassiopa assumed everything in her possession was gone after her first near death experience today. For the most part it was true but there are always remnants of carnage. On the journey from the Sea spring and a not-so-friendly monster, she was able to find pieces of her valuables on the way back. Thanks to a dog? Princes? Soulless to help protect her.
And it will soon prove Cassiopa’s efforts fruitful. She kneels down. Whispers as if she's trading a secret with the utmost importance. Yellow cracks begin to glow on her arm shining through the bandages. She quickly tugs her eye patch, she closes her right eye and opens the other.
A yellow iris and black pupils shine, accompanied with a charcoal black surrounding it. Black skin surrounds the eye with yellow cracks circling around it. Just like her arms.
Cassiopa draws a circle around the pile of scrap with the charcoal. Her hands hover above the scrap. A sphere of connected yellow particles begin to manifest, like a mini diagram of constellations.
“It seems I'll need more than this.” She focuses on the constellations with missing stars, some didn't even have stars to connect. There was something missing. “Ughhhhhh!”
The alchemist falls on her back, relaxing her aching body. (“Mhin I pray to the stars that you are the missing piece.”) She stretches her hand towards the moonlight. (“You've given everything you have to this, haven't you? The solution can be in the palm of these hands. All you have to do is reach towards me. Help me. Please?”)
That's what Cassiopa wanted to say to the hunter, yet she choked when falling into they're piercing gaze. How could such eyes falter her words so easily?
Chapter 2: The Music Box
Summary:
Cassiopa grows every oimpatient after that night, deciding to look and take anything she can find. It's only when she finds the potential of a pristine music box in her grasp is when Mhin finds hujer true intentions of being in Eridia now.

Chapter Text
A bright light hits Cassiopa’s closed eyes, the sun making her face wince in annoyance, she curled upwards. Finally opening her eyes she noticed, “Ugh really?!” She rested on the hard wooden floor, ignoring the perfectly suited bed right next her. “One month of living in the dirt and I can't even use a bedroom right?”
The poor lady with now a terrible ache in her back stood up, stretching arms, back, and neck. Her head turned towards the metallic mess on the window frame, the magic faded and disappeared with the night.
“What should I do now? Maybe I should go out for some essentials, or- a job…?” The planning period was abruptly interrupted by a few light knocks on the door. A few seconds later a new familiar voice peeks through the cracks of the door.
“Hey Cass you've been stuck in there all day, you okay?” It was Leander.
Shit it was Leander! Cassiopa quickly picks up her eye and sweeps up the pile. “I'm a-okay!” Then slips on a loose screw that slipped through her fingers.
BAM!
Thankfully she landed on her butt and not her skull. The Gods know she's had enough head trauma these days, unfortunately though the man behind the door could only imagine what caused such a ruckus.
“Uh y-you okay there Cass?!” Leander knocked a few more times.
“Owowowowowww… Of Course!” She quickly gets up and bolts towards the door. After a few fumbles with the copper key in hand the door swings open, “Good morning, wait grants me your gracious presence today.”
“...What?”
(“Shit!”) Her privilege is showing.
“It's the afternoon Cass.”
“Oh.” She twists her head towards the window, the sunlight glow did seem a bit afternoony (she describes) when she woke. “Damn that floor must have been pretty comfortable after all.” She mutters to herself.
The charming witness chuckles lightly under his fist, “I suggest you get something to eat, I’m glad you're already getting comfortable.” He starts to walk away.
Cassiopa quickly steps back into the room, grabbing her vest coat and belt. As soon as she takes the first step downstairs a crowd is already forming around the Wet Wick. Then by the 10th step she notices a few glances from the bloodhounds.
(“Wonder what that's about?”) All she could do was to wave Leander goodbye and leave the crowded space only looking straight ahead.
Now in the wilderness (Outside in Eridia) Cassiopa’s next step is to snoop around and find (or steal) anything she could use. (“First is the Low town, rather check the most dangerous part of town while the sun is out.”) She faces the sky, about 3 more hours until night time arrives.
It took only five minutes to reach her destination. It was quiet. Just quiet, few bystanders here and there, but no chatter or conversation.
(“A calm before the storm.”) Cassiopa wasn't that naive to sense something was coming. Through the many escorts she's traveled for civilians always cleared the way of royalty or military. Whether it was out of respect or fear to the ones more powerful than them. But it was obvious the later was the case here.
Cassiopa enters the alley close to the main road, and soon enough marches of a crowd echo down the street. “Snobium again?” She mutters, yet why would they bother with a desolate area like this. The lady shuffles down the alley and walks in the same way the march is going. These alleys went in every direction on the compass, it was like the buildings were an after the thought. In Eridia who cares about being a homeowner, being able to sneak and steal is the way to go!
There are two reasons to follow a dangerous and powerful crowd in a suspicious way, one: The attitudes of these people seem a bit more serious and professional, the opposite of what she saw last night. And these guys seemed older than the average student. This leads to info that she can trade and maybe to a specific lone wolf mysterious beautiful hunter. Leading to the second reason: MHIN! (That's it…)
A few minutes pass when the crowd stops at a shabby building, moss and vine creeping into the brick. (“A shabby place like this is perfect to hide someone or something important.”) Cassiopa sneaks to the window at the side of the building. The inside was surprisingly cleaner than the outside, the walls still looked rotted and dusty but there was barely any furniture.
A strong kick soon rang through the street, the men soon stomping in on the creek boards. These bastards sure didn't have any class for robbery, drawers being forced open, rooms being barged through and even cushions being thrown off the couch. Cassiopa ducks and crouch walks to the next window at the back. She peers up and looks through the dusty window.
A singular music box rests on a low table, it's pure white and baby blue paint untouched by dust and dirt.
“Now we're talking.” She quickly kicks the lock on the window in time with the climax of the ruckus inside the building. After that it wasn't hard to pry open the window. Once the now-certified-robber takes a step in the room she immediately analyzes the strange box.
She's seen music boxes plenty of times, they were quite popular with the children that reside in her home. With these things alone, music would resonate in those halls 24/7. This box was no different from her memories, embroidery on every corner, but no emblem of its creator.
BAM! Now the ruckus is growing closer she can't didn't want to waste any more time. She takes the mechanic box and places it in her coat pocket. She holds the pocket itself in place and leaps out of the window, preparing for a safe (and cool looking) landing. If only there wasn't a meat shield protecting the ground under her. And if that meat shield wasn't the lone-wolf-mysterious-beautiful-hunter she met yesterday.
“Huh?-” They both gasp in unison and right before they clash heads.
“Owowowow!” Still clutching her pocket with one hand, the other trying to soothe the ache on her head.
“Again…really?” Yet the other victim of the collision stands up without a scratch looking irritated as ever.
“Again indeed, lovely seeing you again this fine afternoon.”
“Ah yes, the perfect afternoon to rob the same house the most powerful organization in the city is investigating.”
“...Exactly!” She says jumping up on her feet. “But please excuse me, the room is yours for the stealing now.~” She bows and makes way for the frowning samaritan, motioning her hands towards the now broken window.
“Insinuating that I'm here to steal anything…” they cross their arms and smolder their beauty mark in the process.
“Oh I apologize, I should've never assumed your important business in this shabby and dangerous alley!” A (fake) quiver rests over her brow as she covers her mouth in (fake) astonishment. “May I ask what brings you here then?”
“...”
“...”
“You may not.”
“Thought so.”
Unfortunately this questionable banter couldn't last very longer as a shake of the door knob alerts the sneaky looking individuals. Mhin moves past Cassiopa and towards the open window, closing it shut. Then turns toward the lady the next second, in a moment they pull the her hood towards them.
The door swings open, slamming the wall behind it. Cassiopa flinches, not from the sound, but the sudden close proximity between her and Mhin. She lays on her hands and knees as she sits between the hunters legs. The lady is for sure a couple inches taller than them, and yet she felt so small now in this position.
(“Why is it that I’m always the one getting dragged around?!”) Forced to keep her body still and her head down, she could only push her head down even further, praying Mhin doesn't see the growing heat rushing to her head.
Mhin's right hand still grips on Cassiopa's hood, tight enough for her to not make a run for it and get them caught, but loose enough to not threaten and scare the woman into making a run for it and getting them caught.
Wooden boxes and objects being tossed to the floor rang throughout the room seconds later. A perfect time to start a conversation.
Sigh brushes Cassiopa's hair. “You know, I would think that you would wait for my answer, before sneaking around the Senobium?” Mhin tugs the hood an inch closer.
(“Huh, did they actually think about it.”) Cassiopa opens her eye and slowly lifts it to their chest. “I…I had a feeling you would be here…but personally I grew restless doing nothing at all.”
Mhin shifts their gaze to the vest pocket, long fingers still bracing the cloth and what's inside it.
“Grew tired of the Wet Wick already.”
There was something strange about this conversation, personally Cassiopa was expecting snide remarks, back-and-forth banter, and a bit of scolding here and there. Yet Mhin seemed calmer and more…approachable? Why?! Did they find something last night that would have affected their mood? “I of course appreciate Leander's patronage, but something feels wrong staying there.”
“Trying to find your own two feet I see?” Gradually moving her gaze upwards, until they can see Mhin's face only at the corner of her eye. “Here I thought you were getting comfortable.”
Another tug pulls her down. “You have quite a lot of assumptions?” Despite their subtle efforts, Cassiopa shifted so now their face is completely in view. “Besides I want to talk…”
The poor hunter, no matter how collected they may sound, the face of a blushing maiden will always be more powerful than words. Especially when they were trying to avoid the ladies' gaze by pulling their hood, it can't be better than this. Until she notices them pouting their lips, showing off that beauty mark once again. She was wrong, it got so much better!
Both of them would love to continue the conversation a bit more, but the ‘investigation’ in the room grew quiet.
Cassiopa immediately ducks her head, going so far down she can see her chastity (her chest) being displayed by the loose fabric of her dress. Her left hand grips her loose collar up to her neck. (“Shit I forgot to tie the back collar again!”)
“Hey could you-” Mhin whispers.
“I'm sorry!” She whispers louder
“...I was going to ask if you could check the room…” They said, letting go of her hoodie
“Oh.” Cassiopa begins to shuffle upward, still holding her collar up.
“Both of them left the room.” She gets up with the help of the wind pane. She backs up a few steps giving Mhin some space.
A sigh escapes their lips. A crowd is heard from a distance, synchronized march grows quieter with every step. And only silence is left behind
“Do they usually barge into abandoned buildings like that?” Cassiopa picks up her dress and sits down on her knees.
“Abandoned or not, the Senobium can go anywhere they want, in exception to gang territories they’re affiliated with.” Mhin melts onto the brick wall.
“And I was just about to ask if anyone can do something about it. I assume this part of low town isn't owned by anyone at the moment.”
“Yes…”They don't say anything further than that.
“...Mhin?” An unattended shift in tone reflects out of her voice, as Cassiopa realizes that this was the first time today she said their name. It's not like she didn't like the way its sounds, it was quite the opposite actually.
“... Cassiopa?..” They cross their arms once more.
“Will you help me investigate this house before sundown?” She leans an inch in with a smile.
“What?”
“It's just, I would hate to be out here at night fall, and thank goodness a nice samaritan warned of the danger so I clock the time more often.”
“...” It took a second for the Samaritan in question to notice the compliment, “Hmph, I wouldn't say that's nice behavior.” Despite their harsh ‘correction’, they stand back up and offer a hand to the lady.
Just like last night, Cassiopa takes their leather cuffs, but this time is slightly pulled up to her feet. “Is that a yes?”
A sigh escapes Mhin's lips, their face heats up and shifts to the left. “...Let's go.” They begin to walk away towards the window. She follows.
A sound of a window opening and a thump of leather boots on the floor boards. Mhin steps further in the room, completely trashed. Cassiopa once steps in the room as well, she races to the exit door. The hallway was just as trashed as the other.
“I'll check the rooms on the right.” She announces before checking the first room she saw.
“I’ll check the rest of them.”
Both of the affiliated robbers split up for the remaining 2 hours, having more patience to really investigate their surroundings thoroughly, but once Cassiopa was finished with the third room on her side Mhin was already looking through the living room ahead.
“How can I compare to an expert like them?” She mutters, walking towards the concentrated thief. “Done stealing I presume.”
Mhin turns with a box in one hand and a piece of paper that's being stained and torn.”What makes you so sure anyone owns this junk.”
“Well…” She flips through her own papers in hand, “These letters are written by someone, and the writer wanted to get a message across somehow.” A sullen cover reflects in her hazel eyes, “We're just the ones that happen to read it.”
Mhin reflectively loosened they're tight grip on the paper, unwrinkling it in the process. “It’s plausible that the Senobium took what looked most valuable, this letter seems to continue to the last space of the paper, but I couldn't find the continuations.”
“Same for these, each one is mis-mashed and there's no solid order I could follow.” Cassiopa takes a seat on a semi-stable looking table. “What about the box?” She motions her lips to the box of rips and tears on every corner. “If you don't mind me asking?”
Mhin turns to completely face her, presenting the box with one hand and opening the lid with the other. “Just junk and screws.” A pile of metallic scraps in various shapes and sizes fill the box halfway.
“How dare you…” Cassiopa grips her pocket.
The threat was quiet but the change in her tone helped catch Mhin's attention. Surprise and irritation is displayed on their pale face. “Huh…”
“I said…” She quickly grabs the box on the other end of Mhin's hands, inches apart. “How dare you call this junk!” A fiery passion twinkles in her eye, her cheeks blushing from excitement.
“...wow…”
“LOOK at all the types of screws in here! A bangle, a flat, quarter and- Oooohhhh a star screw, THE STARS ARE MY FAVORITE!” She specifically names every screw she points at.
“...wow…” Mhin looks to the side.
“Wow indeed! A screwdriver AND a bradawl?! A two in one deal!” She picks both of the tools in each hand.
“Do you even know what that means-actually nevermind…”
“Mhin, from the letter I've read and this box of treasures, this person must be an engineer of some sort, did your letter tell you anything?”
“The writer was a middle aged man by the time he wrote this letter. I read some details about him working on a…music device? The last part is a bit smudged.” Mhin’s gaze switched down to Cassiopa’s vest.
Her finger flinched, still rummaging through the contents. She sighs and moves her right hand to the vest pocket, bringing out the music box.
“If that's true, I'm truly impressed with his craftsmanship.”
“...what is it?”
“Y-you've never seen a music box before?” She sets the box down between them.
“Tch- so you have?”
“Many times, I've always wanted to make one actually.” She reaches for the box, “Here let me show you…” Her finger turns the knob at the front side, a tune begins to play faster and faster. Just like in her memories, a pretty tune echoes in the room, clicks off the locks releasing the lid and slowly opens.
What was unfamiliar was the electricity building up in the case, Cassiopa quickly pulls back to avoid the shock. The knob keeps spinning though, the song going faster by the second.
“Does it usually pulse electric shocks?!” Mhin quickly gets up, stepping back from the box.
“No!”
The box begins to shake and hum, blue sparks spin around, Cassiopa jumps up as well amazed by the spectacle. Fortunately Mhin notices and grabs her hood again running for cover. The music tunes out, only the hum left, as a white light begins to shine, the particles spinning at a lightning pace. The two bystanders hide in the next room crouching next to each other.
Then silence… then BOOM!
The explosion deafening and the pure white flash blinding, but Cassiopa was fine with both senses, she slowly opened her eyes and realized a pair of hands on each side of her face. It was Mhin's hands, the hunter kneeling down in front of her, they're cloak covered in them both.
“Mhin!”
“Yes?” They raise a brow at the sudden shout.
“...Can you hear?!”
“I'm responding aren't I?!” They quickly stand up, pulling Cassiopa to her feet as well.
“Good point!” She moves to the living room once again, but these blue sparks stand still in the air, electricity crackling throughout the room as blue scars are embedded in the walls. “Whoa…this is…”
“We need to go!” Mhin yells.
“Wait!” Cassiopa responds, running towards the box. The culprit of the explosion sits still, u affected by the powerful blow. It sits open and inside a blue stone, as small as a piece of candy, hovers in the case, cracks covering the glowing orb.
She inches closer so as not to trigger any other surprise mechanics, her fingers gently closing the case, then the floating sparks fall instantly as the cracks lose their blueish glow, electricity escaping the air.
Mhin opens the window in the room they came in through, they check the alleys from side to side. Cassiopa enters the room seconds later, carefully holding the music box in both hands.
“It seems to be in a stable condition now!”
“Let's go then!”
They both jump out the window, their hoods pulled over they're noses. It was night time already, no sign of the sun to guide their way. A large sum of footsteps were heard coming in closer, fortunately Mhin was guiding Cassiopa through the maze of alleys. She concludes that they slowed down for her, she's seen how fast the hunter could run.
Then Mhin suddenly stops, resulting in Cassiopa bumping in behind them, “Ugh! Ow, is something wrong?” She whispers but it suddenly stiffens by the time she sees what they see.
A soulless dead on the street in front of them, its corpse missing its abdomen and torso, every limb on its body twisted in an abnormal degree. Mhin's arm pushing Cassiopa back behind them, slowly backing away them self. A small crowd of Senobium soldiers surrounded a certain familiar silhouette. It was a man adorned in silk and blood. A tall pair of fluffy ears twitch, then a pair of eyes quickly turns to they're direction.
Before she could make eye contact with the monster, Cassiopa is shoved to the wall by the hunter's right arm, hidden from view and in shadow. Only Mhin's hooded face peers over the corner of the alley.
(“It's Vere! Did he see us?! Can he see Mhin- Ugh why is he here of all places?!”) She holds her breath and hugs the music box for dear life. The first time she met the fox man, she could tell how powerful the monster was, his eyes especially made quite the impression. After that she made sure not to cross paths again, at least not in a situation like this, he was actually quite the interesting company at the Wet Wick, a nice crowded, lighted room, with at least 7 ways to exit in case of an emergency. So yeah very safe company back then and there.
Yet Mhin's tense posture and strong hold on her torso told her it wasn't the case anymore. Cassiopa didn't dare to speak, she tugs they're sleeves. Mhin ducks back and looks at her, she mouths a simple sentence, [We need to go.] Still holding tight to that white sleeve.
Mhin looks back at the carnage on the street, closes their white and red iris eyes… contemplating maybe? Then nods.
They both slip away from the scene, taking every step with the utmost caution. Cassiopa face forward, a pit stagnating her throat, praying that a monster was, his eyes especially made quite the impression. “I'm sorry…” The tense silence is broken by a broken whisper, Cassiopa couldn't dare face the hunter. “I didn't know this would be such complicated, I shouldn't have gotten you involv-
“Another thing about this city…” Mhin pulls her once again, but this time is cornered by the wall and their body. “There will always be danger at every corner.” Their right hand shifts up from Cassiopa's outer thigh, but not towards her waist but to the pocket to the vest pocket.
A light gasp escaped her lips, pale fingers dug into the pocket and brought out a stained and wrinkled paper.
They're pricing gaze shifts to the paper and then to Cassiopa's tense expression, “So tell me why you reach out to danger, clinging to me like a helpless damsel, expecting me to work with you.” Mhin’s stabs they're index finger into her waist. “But I don't make deals with liars.”
Mhin's gaze is fixed on hers. Calculating every inch of her expression.
Of course Cassiopa is surprised, but in astonishment, impressed even as her face twists into a satisfied grin. A chuckle bursts through her lip.
She wraps her left arm around Mhin’s shoulder, her hand resting across it. They flinch back, feeling her finger nails brush against their neck, “Mhin everything I said that night was true, but I just look for more - direct - approaches to find the truth.” She leans her head down to touch the other, “I was just afraid to scare you off.”
“You don't know how long I've been working for this. You'd think I would flee so easily?”
“Aren't you the one that said to take a subtle approach, Mhin”
“You think an amateur like yourself can scare me off.” Mhin unfolds the paper with one hand, the contents reveal a detailed blueprint of the music box itself. “Tell me Cassiopa, what do you want?”
She gasped, whether it was relief or astonishment, it was the only response she could give at the moment. This is the first time they said her name, and the first time anyone has ever asked her this question.
“They have it all you know, the Senobium is the beacon of knowledge, I expected powerful, proud scholars, stretching their wisdom to others. I would fantasize about coming here. No matter how foolish it sound...I dreamt of the day I reached this place.”
Cassiopa unwinds her arm, only her hand resting on Mhin’s, her head sits up above theirs. Mhin rest their left hand on the wall behind her.
Her expression twisted in frustration, “But why?! Why close their doors to the outside world, why selfishly March the streets like kings, even enslaving others-” The bloody silhouette of Vere flashes across her mind. He once spoke of enjoying the hunt of soulless, but it didn't look like he was entertained in the slightest, just following a task assigned by his masters. “They don't deserve it, they don't deserve the power and position they have on everyone here!” She squeezes her fist tight, like she was holding something for dear life.
Mhin only stays silent through her claim, analyzing her every move and expression, with those piercing eyes, it was like reading a child's picture book.
“I don't want to just find an answer and run, Mhin.”
A shiver runs through the hunter as she says their name with such certainty. Mhin could only stare into the eye of the other. Those yellow eyes.
“What I want is the Senobium.”
Notes:
I feel like I already learned a lot from the first chapter, and I know I'll keep figuring out on every chapter. I wish I could go back and fix what I personally noticed after posting that first chapter😭, but if I do that I'll just be in this loop of fixing what I don't like😔. I HOPE ENJOYED THIS NEW ONE THOUGH 😁😁😁.
Chapter 3: Night of the Hunt
Summary:
After the day 2 of Cassiopa living in Eridia, she's able to strike a deal with Mhin -despite the hunters reluctance- but weeks past and their no where to be found.

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Mhin was a so-called ‘Certified Skeptic’, throughout their time in Eridia the hunter grew to be inquisitive and question every detail. But people were the exception of this lifestyle. Mhin's been hurt enough by individuals that nothing inspires them to connect or reach out to anyone.
A specific talented doctor - Kuras - was a refresher from the daily bastards of this place, but deep down Mhin knew there was a wall that separated him from the world, including them, that no one could reach or cross through. But they really didn't mind at all, for some reason they were okay with not getting too close to the man.
The leader of the Bloodhounds - Leander - have had their attempts to destroy the shell of Mhin's rough exterior. He's tried - and almost succeeded - but failed many times before, yet he still acted like the both of them were close friends anyway (which always got under Mhin's’ skin). Their patience would eventually run thin, escaping that cesspool of a bar the minute the business between the two was done and paid for.
Today though it really tested the hunters patience, a newcomer, Cassiopa, seemed to enjoy messing with Mhin's plans and operations. They finally had some free time to investigate the Senobium, especially with such an occasion that the Senobium would personally arrive at low town themselves. Of course they would be there, but deep down the conversation the night before was stuck at the back of their brain. Mhin would never admit it but they had the smallest expectation that Cassiopa would be here, after such declarations how could they not be swayed by the wave of ambition, at least for only a little bit.
The lady herself was quite eccentric when it came to trying to strike a deal with them. Straight forward and clumsy obstinance was the opposite of what Mhin needed to find a cure. And the sirens wailed in their head the moment Cassiopa announced her true intentions.
(“ To ‘want the Senobium’- a statement worth treason already - what does she mean by that? To control it? To use for power in knowledge - if that was the case the rule in Eridia “knowledge is wealth” was being taken a bit too literally?”) Just from that claim alone, they couldn't possibly think it over in a dark alley potentially surrounded by the enemy.
So here they both are in a one story cabin, a place Mhin had settled in for about a while now. It was the safest place they could think of, and they sure as hell didn't want Leander pestering over that music box if Cassiopa went back to the Wick.
Moments ago she was proudly announcing her new plans in Eridia, but she was a nervous mess when she stepped in the candle lit cabin, she held the music box a bit tighter behind Mhin. The hunter themselves took off their navy cloak, uncovering their dove white hair and leather brace. Cassiopa does the same, her long ponytail sweeping over the left shoulder, reaching down to her thigh.
“Sit down wherever is available.” The cold welcome blended in the suspenseful silence blankets the cabin, Mhin's monochrome gaze lingered on the lady, she set down her coat on a nearby empty chair. Then sits down on the same cushion.
“Thank you for the invitation.” She fiddled with her index fingers with the fabric of her dress. The music box resting between her forearms. “May I ask why we rushed here specifically?” A cold sweat drops from her neck, her gaze shifts around the room.
(“I still need to know what she plans to do? Such ambitious objectives need careful consideration…I need to tackle this with caution.”) The main room of the cabin had cushioned chairs facing each other that Mhin sat down, a low table sat in between them.
Cassiopa herself realized the position she was in as soon as Mhin sat down, she crossed her legs and straightened her back. Her hands still in a fidgeting manner and tense furrows in her brow. “Actually I think I have an idea of why now.” She moved the music on the table between them. “To be more clear…I want to take over the Senobium.”
Seconds of silence emerged once again, Mhin held a contemplative look, then responded “What makes you think you can convince me to join now, were you planning on hiding your intentions throughout the deal as well?”
“Of course not! I assumed you would take more time to even agree on the trial period. I would've told you everything once I had a solid idea of what to do next - and especially after what I found today, I thought I could use it to convince you in a way.”
Before she could ramble off, Mhin sets down the blueprint paper on the table. “So you were planning on studying this device, using that knowledge to bring me on board, hm?”
“Yes, you saw how powerful this thing truly is, a device like this could give us both an advantage-”
“No, it could've given you an advantage!”
Cassiopa choked, Mhin's expression did not look entertained at all, she was sitting on thin ice here, ‘I don't make deals with liars’, was truly their motto. All she could do now was be honest.
“I truly didn't know what else to do, Mhin, I have nothing else worth anything in Eridia…” She pauses, “I was only following your advice…” She mutters.
The last part struck a chord in the right spot of Mhin's brain, a sigh escaped their lips before they continued, “You've been doing that more often now, I could give you that…” They lean in. “If you want this trial so badly, I need everything on the table,”
Cassiopa flinches, “Everything…”
“Don't get ahead of yourself, we're still strangers, I'm obviously not asking for a life story. If there is something we can use to our advantage, I expect that we both inform the other for the sake of this operation.”
Cassiopa was stunned, then mumbles “You're…still considering it…?” She leans in. “Of course, I won't pry if it's not necessary.”
“We definitely have different end goals, and honestly I have to take your word for a few things to convince myself.”
“I understand.” She rummages through her right pocket and takes out the same papers from before, “Before the explosion, I was able to grab a portion of what we collected - it has a few creases now - but I think they could still help to understand this thing.”
“Hm.” Mhin rummages through their pants pocket, screws and bolts are tossed on the table, the same ones that resided in that old box earlier. “I think this is a good enough trade then.” Cassiopa's eye twinkles once again. It shines so brightly that Mhin has to avert their eyes to avoid the light.
“M-Mhin!” A squeak of sentimental tone brought a blush to their pale cheeks. “I’ll try my best to figure this out. As you said this is a trade, so I will make this worth your time.”
Mhin rises up, and turns to the next open room. “...I thought that was a given.” they're face still blooming red.
“Really though! I plan to use everything I got!”
She quickly follows them in suit. “It might not look much but I prooooooo~”
She was unable to finish her sentence as she realized what was inside the room in front of her.
An area covered in research, a Research Room, so to speak. Two boards covered with pinned papers, some of the pins connected by a red string, like in those detective stories! A desk is covered with stacks of books and small bottles of non-identifiable liquids. Inferencing from Mhin’s hyper fixations, some of this has to do with the Senobium. Another desk that resembled more of an operation table, a bag, a small chest, and a few analytical and surgical tools are spread across the platform. The room was busy, and cluttered, but messy isn't how Cassiopa would describe, actually she felt more nostalgic than anything. From the little time she had to herself back at home, she was always able to find time to conduct experiments and collect essentials for said (prohibited) experiments in her room. Of course she had to find several ways to hide this from the servants and nosy relatives. But here and now, it felt so private and secluded, safe from prying eyes, a place she's always desired.
“~Oooooooooooooo” Cassiopa gave up on finishing her sentence entirely. Her gaze eyeing every nook and cranny of the room, the Research Room. “M-Mhin?!”said with the same high pitch squeak.
“What do you think I've been doing all this time?” They stand to the side, arms crossed.
She quickly runs to the center of the room practically spinning to get a look of everything, with her dress flowing in 360 degree angle. Her hair was no longer resting on her shoulder, following behind wherever she went.
Mhin was still standing to the side watching her every move, this was the first step of their deal. A trial period needs the essential prep to even begin, and they were willing to give at least a bit of their privacy - for now. “You may use this room to store any or all items that can prove essential to the operation.” They make their way to the board closest to them, their left hand grazing over the many papers plastered on the surface. “Everything displayed in this room is temporarily yours as well as mine.” They look back at Cassiopa, the abrupt silence from her was more uncomfortable than they thought.
Unexpectedly so for Mhin, a bitter taste in her mouth twisted her gleeful expression, cringing to the sourness of it all yet still trying to keep that eager grin. She knew where this was going, but her ego seems bruised nonetheless. It has only been two days since the two individuals knew each other, yet she should’ve already gotten a good sense of how Mhin did things. And why.
Cassiopa wanted to say…something, but as her gaze shifted to her surroundings - avoiding the person in front of her - Mhin on the other hand took their time to continue, mulling over their words carefully. “In exchange, you leave the music box here, I don’t know about your opinion, but I wouldn't want the bloodhounds (especially Leander) catching the scent of a particularly powerful object.”
“I was just about to suggest the same thing.” She looked their way with a wide grin, spinning to face directly towards the hunter. “Do you also suggest I leave the Wet Wick as well?”
Mhin’s brows furrowed, why would she ask for her opinion on this as well, either she was stupidly naïve or trying to get something out of them. “Of course, but abruptly leaving might cause suspicion among the others-”
“I’ll leave in about a month.”
The sheer confidence and matter-of-fact tone caught Mhin’s attention. “Why a month?”
She tilted her head slightly “I still got business with Leander. Hell, it might help with our curse situation if I play my cards right.” She sat down the music box on a nearby table, her fingertips grazing the embroidery. “I’ll just have to figure out what he wants…That’s it really!”
Mhin couldn’t respond or refute, they had no right if their potential business partner wanted to explore her options for a bit, no matter how stupid or fruitless it (definitely) would be (and the fact she said our curse tugged a string at their brain).
“Okay then, I've said what I need to say.” Mhin walks to the exit, grabbing their cloak on the way.
“Uh, are you going out for bounties?” sounding like she was rushing to say something.
They open the door but stop at the barrier of the door frame. Their head shifts to Cassiopa's direction, “Maybe.”
Mhin doesn't know why but they waited an extra second longer before moving to leave. It seemed like there was more to say for both the individuals, will this work, can we work together, and why did you agree to this? Yet they stayed quiet. Mhin turned their head away, but then heard footsteps getting closer.
“Um! I-I really-” She clears her throat, “Thank you, I truly am grateful for all of this, I will use my utmost ability to give my equivalent exchange to the deal.” She quickly backs away, she seemed so confident and playful just a moment ago, yet she seemed so awkward in the moment.
“Equivalent Exchange huh, you sound like a newbie student alchemist now. You solidified the deal the moment you put that music box on the table, its really as simple as that.” Then Mhin leaves the moment they finish. Closing the door behind them.
Now Cassiopa was left to her devices.
-
The Study is what Cassiopa call this place now, a secluded oasis of learning and research, the perfect paradise that she always craved. It's no manor with butlers and maids, but she also didn't have nosy relatives and annoying gossip. Having a peace of mind, the privacy she never had in her grand chamber. That's pretty much I she hesitated receiving this gift in the first place, it all seemed like too much all at once.
That's why she blissfully spent those 2 weeks spending everyday in that study (the exception getting side jobs every now and then). Studies -safe or not- on the music box were…interesting, but slow and steady wasn’t a choice in this case.
-
Log #4 -The stone is sensitive and can react to the slightest touch. This could explain what happened 4 days ago, but when I opened the second time it didn’t react the same -the opposite really- it only hovered in the case. The same star-like sparks fluttered around the room though.
I sometimes just sit there awestruck by it all.
I’m starting to think these past days that the stone grows to tolerate and dislike a few ways of how I touch it.
For example
Pliers - no
Brushes - yes
Gloved hands - no
Uncovered hands - yes
It seems to be in favor of natural gentle contact. But that can waver by any minute. I was personally reluctant to use my bare hands, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'll need to get an agreement with my partner to test if alchemic methods could find similar results-
-
Cassiopa paused her shorthand. She tilted her head upward away from the paper, looking up to the wooden ceiling. The sun was settling in the horizon - late noon maybe - and she sure wasn’t ready to sleep just yet.
(“Oh! I almost forgot?”) She goes to a smaller piece of paper.
-
Dove, I would like to conduct a designated spot for the music box. It would be much appreciated if I got your input on this. It's also been a few days since we met up, there's so much I want to tell you, I hope that you're able to see this.
Any sign of you would be much appreciated.
-
Cassiopa would never admit her impatience today, she would never admit the feeling of being ignored even though this was supposed to be a partnership…she would never admit how alone she felt in this cabin. She takes the small piece of paper and tags it on the stone wall. This wall accompanied many other notes, some with short or long sentences and paragraphs, some with sketches of the music box and stone.
She steps back, sighing at the mess, where would Mhin be able to begin with all these, how would they feel facing all this. She's been thinking that a lot lately. She was bless with this room, but the isolation was part of the blessing nonetheless.
“Wait the time?!” Her head turns as soon as she notices the lack of light in the room. “I forgot - AGAIN?!” The sun was about to retire from the day.
Cassiopa quickly grabs her cloak and leaves the journal on the table. Once she was in the main street she makes her way to the district, almost knowing the exact twist and turns of the alleyways.
Almost.
By the 15th right turn, it was nothing like the district, a few lights barely Illuminated the street, dark windows covered almost every building along the path.
(“What part of town is this?”) She asks herself, pulling out the makeshift map - a bunch of paper stuck together, with different patterns of the city on each piece - checking if she has recorded such a place.
She hasn't.
Cassiopa bolts to the nearest alley next to the main street, bringing out a pencil to blueprint. She only stops when a familiar name-
“DAMNIT AIS!!!”
A rough and calloused voice calls out, sending shivers down her spine, causing the pencil to slip on the paper. Then following up to the shout was a commotion of several individuals.
Her impression of AIS was not positive, he was half right about the bad impressions but he was actually the most honest about the giva and take of the Sea Spring. Knowing the reward and the cost, made it of course plan z, but she still appreciated the honesty. But no matter how honest the oni was, he was still trouble and seemed to thrive in it.
(“Well let's hope he can get out of this one?!”) From the half dead body she found that braced the full brutality of the monster the night she arrived Cassiopa concludes he was a skilled brawler.
As she was about to leave the alley in the opposite direction she came in, through the cracks of the buildings, a bright yellow eye - the size of a window - flashes past her. Cassiopa stops her breath, clasping her hand over her lips, silencing her gasp. Back away slowly to where she came from. She turns her head towards the horizon. The sun wasn't gone yet but the night would soon take over.
(“A SOULESS, NOW! I thought they only came out at night time, I should've been back alreadyyyyyyyyy!”) screaming internally, she holds her head in a panic.
Cassiopa turns toward the sound of the commotion once more, there's nothing she can do but wait until the grotesque creature gets distracted by it all. She finally peers around the corner, getting a sneak peak of the battle. Several men with red sashes on their arms surrounding a man - Ais - with furious looks and fire in their eyes.
Ais still held that deadpan stare from before, but a smirk on his lips (flashing his canines in the process) stood there with two limp bodies next to him. Blood hugged his knuckles and forearms and a pinch on his cheek.
(“Well if Ais gets out of here alive, I could ask him to escort me?”) But was that really a good idea? I mean the guy is covered in blood and looking pretty maniacal right now.
(“But do I want to be seen with him in the street? People might think I'm associated with a freak like that…”) Cassiopa slumps down on the floor. She brings out the map again and continues her map work, ignoring the fight-noises? -of it all.
But a certain monster was sure taking their time though, Cassiopa was expecting some screams and chewing sounds about now, what kind of Soulless is this?! 4 minutes had already passed and impatience was settling in. She gets up and peers around the corner once again.
This time there were only a few men standing -including Ais- but he wasn't even paying attention to them, he looked to the side of Cassiopa’s blind spot. The look in his eyes was calculating, like an animal trying to figure out a weird plant, even tilting his head slighting narrowing his crimson eyes. That's when Cassiopa noticed a gargling sound coming from the direction he was looking at. The sound was deep and raspy, almost unnaturally.
The curious lady cemented her gut, and shifts her position to the other side of the alley. There she sees a figure -much smaller compared to Ais- covered in monster blood and guts, the back was heaving up and down, clutching a grim knife. She recognized the handle and the gleam as it shines in the moonlight despite the blood. That figure was standing in front of a giant soulless, punctured in the same way she saw one her first night here.
(“Mhin?!”)
-
The night was still young, the moon beginning to rise, the perfect time for a hunt. And both the monster and the monster hunter could agree, for different reasons of course. The monster was enjoying it much more than the hunter was, a fire still crackling in his eyes.
Mhin was exhausted. Job after job, slowly deteriorating their mind and their will. They can feel the feathers build up against their blouse sleeve (through the night they would continuously tug the sleeves making sure to conceal them). But now they just couldn't care less, a fresh kill and the tense air weighing heavy on their psyche. Days of dried blood covered their clothes, face, and hair. The order radiated from their being, every muscle in them aching from combat. The hunter turns their bloody head, breath heavy.
Why should they care though, only another monster stood before them, horns and fangs like any other. What so bad about killing one more.
They're full body was now facing the monster, a step was taken by each individual, slowly inching towards the other. The air grew dense and thick, the stench of both human and inhumane floats in the air. Their paces quicken every second only, from a walk to a run, ten centimeters away then-
BOOM!-
A gust of yellow smoke consumed the area, heavy winds now separating the two of them, white sparks buzzed through it all.
Mhin bolted back to their senses, their surroundings covered by dust.
“HEY?!”
The hunter turns to the sound of the shout, a shadowy figure jumps from a building. Long hair flows and follows the silhouette, layers of cloth flowing as well. They soon land with a grunt and that was the last noise they made.
Silent seconds passed, Ais was nowhere to be seen, simply stepping more in the smoke to hide his vast frame. Mhin's heartbeat rang in their ears, all they could do was look down at the carnage on those pale hands, black specks embedded in the skin. At the hem of the sleeve is where the black feathers peak through. Their breath quickens all the weight of bloodshed settling in.
(“It's…getting worse...”)
It's growing.
And grow it grew. The tremor of the hunters' nerves sure didn't help it, especially the dizzy feeling at the front of their head.
The heart drumming was so loud they didn't notice a set of light steps growing closer at a quick pace. Soon enough a gloved hand grasps theirs, pulling them in the same direction.
“Dove!”
The familiar honey glazed voice is panicked and filled with concern. Quicken breaths create a symphony, the rush of footsteps, almost matching Mhin's heartbeat.
They both began to ran as fast as they could, no destination, no other goal, but up ahead.
-
The moon settles mid air, as the escapees catch their breath, one hand embracing the other. For some reason neither of them want to let go.
Cassiopa steels her grip - feeling the trembling hold of the pale hand - to gain strength within.
Mhin tries but fails to do the same.
Both silent for a moment then-
“...Dove?” A breathy remark cuts the atmosphere.
“Oh!” She straightens up. “W-well you were gone for quite awhile, and I thought of a way we could use code names…”
“So you thought you could try it out - now?” Mhin says with a deadpan tone with a deadpan face is
“...” Cassiopa turns her gaze, warmth blossoming on her honey colored cheeks. “No good?”
Mhin puts his weight on the wall next to them, the trembling is weakening. The hunter can't help but eye the clasp hands. “What hell are you doing here Cassiopa?” The question came out more accusatory than they intended. They continue “Does your research involve traveling to soulles infested streets at midnight.”
“Well…if I did intend on doing so, you would've been informed about it if you came by at least once!” The frustration and adrenaline was getting to her head now. “It would've been nice if you gave some inkling that you would be gone for 15 days!”
Mhin clicks their teeth, “God's forbid I get caught up in work.”
“Work?! You look like you just went to the butcher's den!”
The drastic claim was definitely not an exaggeration, as the hunter involuntary checks themselves. Mhin never really paid attention to appearances - especially on the job - for a majority of their life, but even they had a standard of display. And now that it was pointed out the murkiness of blood and bits of guts was getting to their head.
“...Damn…” They say under their breath. The icky feeling on they're hands is interrupted by a warm and silky sensation. It's Cassiopa's’ hand still gripping theirs. Despite her correct descriptions of Mhin's appearance, she still grips the pale, bloody hand. Then realizes that they stop shaking. It felt nice. They look down a bit on their forearm to see the black feathers and specks retreating from their hands.
A sigh escapes their lips, “Tacky-”
“What?!”
“And the animal nicknames are Ais’s thing, how unoriginal.” They roll their eyes.
“The nickname -I mean code name? Really?!” The lady was absolutely astonished, she potentially saves the ungrateful hunter, now is getting harsh critiques like nothing happened. “I've seen this type of thing in so many literature, thank you. It's practically in the official process to conduct investigations!”
“You mean those detective books, I assume.” They scoff. “Let me guess, are you those types of fans that constantly make stupid references from detective series?” A small grin covers their lips.
“...” A Huff echoes from Cassiopa, “You're quite crude, you know that.”
“You can add that on the list too if you want.” Their grin grows wider.
The next moment is hit with realization, Cassiopa notices the shaking stop but they're still hand in hand, they both jolt away from the contact. Mhin holds their own hand - a certain itch on their palm - hugging it tight. Cassiopa on the other hand could only think of one thing-
“...Where…where were you?” The question was subtle and quiet but Mhin froze all the same. Cassiopa pauses for a few seconds, the last thing she wants is to scare them away. “I don't want to weigh you down…I-I just want to know if you're even reading my notes…”
Mhin's eyes widen, still silent.
“Do you know what I've been doing this whole time…Do you know how long I've waited for a response?”
“I- well…” Mhin stutters
“-Don't get me wrong though!” She cuts in. “I don't want your entire life preoccupied on this, I-I can be a bit impatient - but I know you have a life here and I don't expect you to be available 100% of the time!”
“Right…?” They question.
“I mean who has all the time in the world to do questionable experiments on a highly sensitive, highly explosive, highly dangerous magic stone!”
“Please say that louder, I don't think the entire neighborhood got that.”
The banter continues for a small portion of the night, it was most of Cassiopa rambling about the past 2 weeks of research. Every last detail was related to Mhin and they just listened. The both of them started walking halfway through the conversation. Mhin finally says something.
“Nice glove.” A certain amount of sarcasm positions their tone. They had a feeling of where she got it from - the texture and color reminding them of a certain someone. Was it a gift?
“Hm? Oh, thanks I found it in my room at the Wick, I only found one glove of the pair though.”
Unwelcome relief unclenches their chest. “You checked it right?”
“Indeed, I found no enchantments attached in the threads, it's just nice fabric.”, Cassiopa takes the glove off and puts it in her vest pocket. “I try not to use everyday to wear it out though, I have a feeling it's Leander's-”
“Or from one of his many escapades. A stranger might be missing their nice glove.”
A gasp escapes her lips, “Oh my Mhin, is that a hint of shade and a sprinkle of jealousy I taste.” Then a mischievous grin forms.
“Ugh as if, I don't understand how people could live like that really.” They walk faster up ahead, “You should know I loathe loud crowds, you think I would cater to participating in one night escapades.”
“I do understand the animosity for crowds - trust me I understand - but people have their own way of fun. No matter how much we can't comprehend why.” She takes a look at her right hand, a part of the bandage at her palm is coming loose. She clutches it into a fist. “I've been embraced, kissed and touched, but there's still so much I want to do, so much out there to experience. But with these hands It feels like I'm stuck in one place.”
“...” Mhin slows down a bit. “...If it means anything, I understand the feeling.”
Tears tickle Cassiopa’s eye, blinking rapidly to keep them at bay. How long has she been wanting to hear those words? To receive that reassurance only for her. She would never expect a blood covered, small tempered, grumpy, lone wolf hunter to be the first to console her, but she will cherish it nonetheless.
Speaking of blood covered - “Gods you smell.”
“...” Their nose scrunches up like an angry cat and their pert lips contort into a snarl. “Fucking asshole.”
She chuckles, “My apologies but I speak the truth, I think I can reach the Wick from here, go clean yourself, Dove.”
Mhin clicks their teeth, “Fine. Try not to be a soulless’s midnight snack, Cassiopa.” They turn in the opposite direction of her, hiding the small grin on their lips.
“Good night to you too.”
After the short and sweet goodbye Cassiopa turns towards the district before her, but her smile disappears, brows furrowing, and a spark of determination in her eyes. Before reaching the doors of the Wet Wick, tension settled on her shoulders.
Inhale, exhale~ she soothes her gut momentarily, then plasters a small smile on her face. She opens the door…
The light and sound from the interior hit her senses. She adjusted both as she steps in the bar, she didn't know what she was looking for, but kept an eye out nonetheless. Leander wasn't seen by the bar or any booths-
(“That's one less thing to worry about.”) Relief settling -but only for a moment. Two familiar monsters sit at the end of the bar, one stool sitting in between them. One of the men - foxlike ears twitching- forms a twisted grin stretching on his lips, and his eyes soon fixate on her Cassiopa The man next him, was the same one she saw early tonight, holding a beer with his right hand. He took one more sip before side eyeing her. The three individuals didn't wave or make any friendly gesture, just stared in an endless standoff between them.
She walked towards in that stalemate, the monsters both break their gaze off of her once she sits in the seat between them.
Ais takes down the remainder of his drink -he exhales, “So Sparrow,” He throws his cup on the counter, his forearm set on the surface, “What are you willing to exchange.”
Notes:
For some reason this took longer to make than usually, but I finally got the story planned out so far and written the 3 Chapter!!! I also had to organize and delete a few things when I went to upload the chapter (just some avoidable technical difficulties) but everything's sorted through! THANKS FOR READING!
Chapter 4: A Deal and A Plan.
Summary:
As Cassiopa lives another, now holding a deal with an Oni, and under the watchful eye of a fox, she awakes with one goal; actually making a plan.

Chapter Text
The Wet Wick for the past two weeks has been a home for Cassiopa, a place to dwell in the night and withdrawal in the morning. She's grown used to the crowd's and commotion. Some times when it's not as crowded she would pick an empty seat or booth and take random notes.
In the manor’s grand banquets her past self loathed the polite whispers and dialogues, some were pointed at others and most to herself. Yet the cheerful chatter and powerful laughs in the crowd brought a new kind of comfort to her ears.
That sentiment still stands, even if the lady sits between two monsters that can kill at any moment, it especially helped that she knew this moment would come a mile away.
(“With the Senobiums connection -or possession- with Vere, it would only be a matter of time before they crossed paths again.”)
“So Sparrow…what are you willing to exchange?” Ais’s crimson gaze shifts to her. But Cassiopa only closes her eyes…thinking.
A monster's hunt cannot be interrupted with sacrifice. Those are the only worlds she could think of before taking her seat at the bar, but could she possibly exchange for something she doesn't have.
(“What would Ais want from me?”) And from the looks of it the oni was expecting an answer. Now. She glanced at Vere next to her. His hands connected -his elbows on the bar table- as his jaw rested on his fingers. That grin still plastered on that punchable face. (“Of course, why would Vere give any hints.”)
She opened her mouth, “How about drinks to start it off.” She taps her index finger to the table. “On me of course.”
The five seconds of silence are eternity to her ears, a hidden cold sweat gliding along her neck. Ais tilted their head slightly.
“Hmmmm…I'll have a beer.”
She finally took a breath, “How about you Vere?”
“Wine.” His tail sways behind his stool. “I'm surprised you can afford it, have you finally found your coin in this dump~”
“What else can I do when I'm stuck here?” She grabs her coin pouch, as the other two raise their hands to get the bartender's attention. “Besides, I can finally show off my hard work.”
“Oh please, we've seen a lot of it already.” The silk voice almost blankets the buried truth of those words. “Honestly, how could anyone not notice?”
What could the fox possibly be referring to, Cassiopa assumed there would be watchful eyes among the streets, but who and why. I mean it withholding a magically powerful object could catch a few eyes. And she was ready to make any deal possible, but when her accomplice is not here to verify their corporation, things could get tricky.
(“I don't think Mhin is in any sort of state of mind to make such a deal.”) She grimaced for only a second. “Well with my dashing self running the streets, I would expect a few stalkers here and there.”
“Be careful Vere, you might expand her ego even more.” Ais soon receives his cold brew of beer, as Vere receives his bottle of wine.
“I'm only stating the truth.” Cassiopa sets down the appropriate coin on the table in front of her. (“Let's ease the atmosphere a bit before anything, how grateful am I that 90% of the people here are drunkards.”)
“Aw not getting anything?” Vere leans a bit over the counter.
“Hah, and get drunk around you two no way!” She claims.
“Who said anything about getting drunk?” Ais stats.
“And who said about getting multiple drinks…unless…” Vere adds.
“You’re a lightweight.” As if it was a matter of statement, the monster both conclude simultaneously.
She holds up her hands claiming innocence. “Now let's not hop on assumptions here.”
They were right though, those said banquets always had fancy wine glasses with so called Fancy alcohol in every cup. But those were mostly props, an object used to keep the rich’s hands full. She never particularly enjoyed those drinks so she never indulged herself period.
“Well aren't you a fresh patch of daisies.” Vere's grin widens playfully.
┈
The banter and relentless teases persisted, when the sun was slowly peeking its head at a window, it was finally time to call it quits, with the other bloodhounds returning to their homes.
Cassiopa gets up from her seat, “Well my circadian rhythm is ruined enough, time to hit the hay.”
Vere hummed in acknowledgement, but Ais remained silent. Cassiopa couldn't see his face to gauge his mood, leaving her unsettled. Yet all she could do was continue to walk upstairs -reluctantly turning her back to the both of them- heading to her room.
Of course the lady would love to turn around and check every 5 milliseconds on her way to bed. But in a city like this you have to be stealthy, alert, and every other trait opposite of her. She paid every sound to the closest detail, the creaking of stools against the wooden floor, creaking footsteps on wooden planks, or a particular pair of rubber boots walking behind her.
Fortunately she reaches ‘her’ room, in the quiet hallway. She rushes to get her keys out of her pocket (silently praying Vere didn't steal them again), when she grabs it and unlocks it.
But she can't open it.
She's already made 2 hypotheses in about 3 seconds. The door itself is a bit broken opening towards the outside of the room instead in the room it leads to. It's creaky and old but it still works, of course her realization meant the other hypothesis was definitely true. The strong looking forearm at the corner of her eye was evident enough. That arm had a leather brace at the wrist and rings hugging the calloused fingers indicated it was the Oni.
“Sorry Sparrow, but I'm gonna need the rest of that payment. Now.” Irritation tinted Ais’s voice, it was low, lower than the last time she heard it.
He wasn't directly behind her, not to the point that they were touching, but she still felt him closing in, feeling a gaze at the back of her neck. She had to give something NOW. THINK OF SOMETHING-
“Two days!” She refuses to let her voice tremble, sounding as concrete as possible she continues, “I'll have your hunt by then- heck it might be more challenging than the last one!” She twists her head towards Ais, forcing a proud grin on her lips, trying to hide the cold sweat near her chin.
Ais had a deadpan look, gazing right in Cassiopa’s eye.
3 seconds pass and he closes his eyes.
2 seconds pass and he opens them again.
He forms a grin.
“See, isn't that easy enough.” He backs away a few steps.
“Easy, huh?” This exact order of events reflected the first time they met, Ais’s way of getting info out of people is surely effective but Cassiopa would very much appreciate it if he would try other tactics. “If you're done cornering me for any other . ‘payments’, I believe this is a goodbye.”
“For now.”
“Right…for now.” She crosses the door frame and closes the door behind her.

The next morning was surely filled with dread and panic over the ‘deal’ made with an Oni, but now that it was almost brunch she had to get her wits in order. She thinks best at brunch anyway.
She traveled to the cabin once more, and off to her usual routine. Find the key in the bin next to the other building, open the door and start studying that damn stone.
But there was a pleasant surprise waiting for her in the study room. A clean and freshly dressed Mhin analyzes the wall of notes meant for them. They had another white blouse on, but this one had loose frills at the chest and wrists. Except for the usual wrist braces, bandages wrapped under the sleeves.
(“Truly, what a refreshing morning!”) She covered her mouth to cover the creepy wide grin on her face.
“Um, you okay…?” Mhin noticed the lady just standing there looking at them.
“Me am!” She paced forward -ignoring the stupidly embarrassing mistake- a few feet closer to the hunter. “It's truly a wonderful surprise to see you. I assumed you would be on break or out hunting once again.”
“Well…” A tint of pink spreads across their cheeks, they cross their arms, “You’ve followed my advice on a few occasions, so I might as well listen to one of your requests.”
“M-my request?” She raises an eye.
“Last night you wanted me to see your notes.” They say it almost to a whisper, their head tilting downward, the tips of their fingers grazing papers.
If Cassiopa was any farther away from Mhin she wouldn't be able to grasp the way the sunlight touching their pale skin, a brisk herbal smell radiating from them and of course the sentimental tone cemented between Mhin's words. Truly a lovely morning.
“Well if you don't mind, I'm free until the afternoon, how about reviewing my findings together.”
Mhin looks squarely at her face, the turns to the notes on the wall-
“I-I was referring to my data logs that are NOT on that wall!”
“That makes more sense” They sigh moving towards the table on the other side of the room.
“Oh before we start I would like to show you something!” She sang with excitement as she reached the top of a shelf. A few shuffles later and she brings out a small tea set.
“When did you…”
“I've been working on a multitude of jobs for the past 2 weeks, I just so happened to help this elderly woman in exchange for this treasure.” She sets down the set on the table, but then jolts to another shelf and brings out an organized cubby, layered with cases for different kinds of tools. “You'd be surprised at the kind of things I found in the marketplace!”
“Hope you didn't spend all of your money at once.” Mhin looks over the cubby.
“Hey you live and you learn, make mistakes, make the same one again, and then learn.”
“I don't know where you're from but that statement is so wrong in so many ways.”
-
Cassiopa learned a plethora of new things from her and Mhin's morning tea time. First off Mhin seemed pretty interested in the act of alchemy, studying it before they even came to Eridia. Which didn't surprise the lady in the slightest, the first she was here, when Mhin saved her from that damn demon of a soulless, their moves were precise and thorough. It was especially adamant once Mhin took care of it, striking the beats where it could kill it easily and look over its body like a surgeon.
Those could certainly cut glass, yet Cassiopa can't help but admire their beauty. (“I wouldn't mind them being fixated on me!”) She squealed internally.
That wasn't the only thing though, Mhin was particularly familiar in alchemic experiments, specifically with the autonomy of non-human subjects. Their references on the stone structure were a bit… morbid. Using the words skeletal and pulsing metaphor in said references. And kept comparing the times where they looked through monsters themselves.
Cassiopa concludes that maybe the hunter got lost in their explanations, sometimes going into much detail. Cassiopa was never sensitive to gore but even at some point she was quite flabbergasted. Yet Mhin was able to connect these anecdotes to the main topic at hand.
“For an individual that doesn't partake in crowds or…people, you seem like you know how to keep a conversation going.”
“W-well, ugh, if you want me to shut up than just tell me..”
“Oh no no no, the opposite really, your insite has helped me before and definitely does now.” Cassiopa sets down her teacup and plate then jumps towards the board, flips it and grabs a piece of chalk.
“You personally said that you know every part of the border of the Senobium.” Cassiopa proceeds to draw a small (semi-crappy) sketch of the white tower.
“People can't get in, or get out- Except for that gods’ forsaken gate.” Mhin snarls as they sip their tea.
“Exactly, so why are we wasting our time trying to get in.” She sketches little stick figures with dumb faces in the ‘Senobium’.
“Because they might definitely hold the knowledge we desperately need.”
“Well yeah, but since we can't get in how about we bring the Senobium to us.” Cassiopa sketches an arrow from inside the ‘Senobium’ and points to the other stick figures that resemble Cassiopa and Mhin.
Mihn tilts their head. I mean there are many ways to interpret these ideas, so many routes to pick, so many plans to map out. But from the few days Mhin got to know Cassiopa, she seems like the type to conjure up the most outlandish ideas for somewhat simple problems.
“Go on…” Is all the hunter replies with.
“Gladly!” Cassiopa circles the miniature sketches of the two of them. “We could spend weeks, months, years even, to try and plan and operate ourselves in the Senobium! But they're already too many risks with just that, the main one being on the target list of those white robes lunatics.
“I'm pretty sure just being remotely involved with them risks that outcome.” Mhin takes another sip.
“Exactly! So I was thinking we should take the Senobium into our own territory.” She grabs her bag and pulls out a pile of paper. She spreads the sheet out on a table.
Mhin walks up and admires the contents, “This is…”
“I hate not knowing where I am, so I make sure to record and remember everything I go. Which fortunately leads me to the next step.” She turns to Mhin, “Have you noticed any patterns when the Senobium folks go out into Eridia.”
Mhin nods, then points to a few areas on the map, “You saw yourself on your first night here that Senobium students take part in drinking as well.”
“Oh yeah! So that wasn't just a time thing.”
“Indeed, but that's not the only thing I noticed, even if they hold so much knowledge that they don't have everything in the world, they still need a source of supply.”
“These sources…if we could track a pattern through their transactions across, maybe a magic or alchemic market, we could find a lead.”
Mhin nods approvingly to Cassiopia’s surprise, “Sounds like a first step, but I'm hoping you know what to do once we find an unexpecting victim.”
“...How deep do you think the thread of loyalty runs through Eridia, is it really so Important when knowledge is worth so much more here…” Her voice ran cold and harsh. Mhin only glanced at the shiver of her words, “Knowledge is what is gained and sought for in the Senobium, students from most likely power bloodlines or rich families come to seek it. But what if they found something better, something that can give them more power than they ever imagined in that tower.”
“Cassiopeia, what's your point-”
Suddenly Cassiopa leans in to Mhin, a breath stands between both of their faces, “If someone offered you the cure you were looking for…but you had to betray me, would you take it?”
“Yes.” That's all Mhin says, “...Sorry.”
Her cold gaze turns to a smile in an instant, “No that's great, your preservation is what charmed me in the first place.” Ignoring the knot in her stomach, she wraps her forearm with Mhin's then rests her head on their snowy white hair.
She pretty much expected Mhin to retaliate against the close proximity, but they just stood there and let her rest against their body. Whether it was out of reluctance or pity the lady would take advantage nonetheless.
All the hunters does is speak, glancing away from her, “Using such unfathomable knowledge to get what you want, but what do we ask and what can we exchange.”
“Ughhhhh,” Cassiopa groans, nuzzling more in white threads, “Why ask me all the questions, I believe you've at least thought about it once when we collected a specifically magic induced stone.”
Mhin clicks their teeth, “I had an inkling you'd say something like that-”
Cassiopa lifts her head to face Mhin. “So let's try it, hm, point it out on the map and I'll take a look myself.” Mhin gives a look, “AND I'll notify you of everything and anything.”
“...It won't hurt to try and it won't be any different from my usual nights of sta- investigations.”
Cassiopa hums (“They were about to say stalking weren't they.”) I mean that conclusion isn't wrong in the slightest, she had a feeling from the start that this was the case.
But now they can actually do something, and if Cassiopa wasn't so close to the Wilshire haired hunter, she might have missed the excitement in their eyes. Ever since Cassiopa got to this city called Eridia so much has happened in so little time.
Yet she's all the more grateful.
Notes:
HELLOOOOO, ITS BEEN FOREVER SINCE I UPDATED, but I'm FINALLY DONE. Since this was gonna be my first finished fanfic, I wanted to keep it short and not stretch my myself out too thin. THEN I decided I want to continue this little story of mine so there will be a separate fanfic made as a continuoasin , with a few changes.
