The two of them were going over their supplies with the TV playing in the background. They could hear the newscaster talking about the Z virus which was quickly spreading. People were being urged to stay indoors and remain vigilant. Those who were infected with the virus were extremely aggressive and spread the disease through saliva.
The only way to kill an infected was by aiming for the head. The people who were infected were essentially dead and it was the virus taking over their corpses and controlling them.
There had already been a few cases in their area and it wouldn't be long before there were more, given how aggressive the virus was. The two of them had gone to the grocery store and stocked up along with the rest of the town. The shelves had been empty with everyone buying things and it had quickly become chaos. Fighting had broken out and someone had ended up getting shot.
He tried not to think about it and focused on the first aid kit he was going through when they suddenly heard shouting. They both stiffened and looked over at each other to see if they heard the same thing.
When the screaming continued his eyes widened and before he realized it he was rushing to the door with a bat in hand. Soundwave chased after him worried about him getting hurt and trying to stop him.
"Hot Rod you heard what they said? We need to stay inside and not engage unless necessary."
"I know those screams, It's Daniel he's in trouble."
Soundwave looked at him in shock.
"Are you sure?"
He nodded and Soundwave pulled out his gun. They rushed to their neighbor's house across the street and he tried to open the door but found it locked. Looking in the window he could see Carly standing near the kitchen. Her back was turned to them and when he banged on the door she looked over.
He gasped because there was blood all over her favorite dress. Her once neat blond hair was a mess with blood smeared about and her face had a large chunk missing out of it along with her arm.
She snarled and rushed towards them. Her teeth snapped with hunger when Soundwave shot her in the head. He flinched because even though he'd never liked Carly she was still his neighbor and he knew Daniel would be devastated if he was still alive.
He felt a spike of fear terrified they were too late and that he'd been infected like his parents. The noise drew Spike downstairs who snarled at them. Soundwave shot him through the head as well and he easily picked the lock.
They walked inside weapons raised. his heart was pounding in his chest because he didn't know what he was going to do if Daniel was infected. He didn't know if he could kill him especially because he loved him like he was his own.
"Daniel!"
"Help me!"
They both carefully walked upstairs and looked around. They could see blood on Daniel's door and when he tried to open it he found it was locked. Daniel made a sound of fear and he tried to reassure him.
"Daniel it's me. It's okay you're safe now."
"Are you hurt?"
Soundwave glanced at him and he knew he was just as worried about Daniel being infected.
"No."
"Can you open the door?"
It was quiet for a moment and then Daniel opened the door. He immediately looked him over checking for any bite marks. He didn't have any blood on him which was a good sign.
"Are you okay? What happened?"
"My parents were at a party."
"What?"
"We're supposed to be on lockdown."
"They said that it was fine and that everyone was blowing things out of proportion. I begged them not to go but they left anyway and they told me that I wasn't allowed to visit you two because they knew you'd be mad."
When he didn't see any bite marks he sighed in relief and held Daniel who clung to him looking terrified.
"They came home early because my father wasn't feeling well."
Daniel gave them a guilty look.
"I was arguing with my mom because she wasn't taking this seriously and I might have said some things... I shouldn't have... Then my dad started acting weird and I knew he was infected. I tried telling my mom but she didn't listen and he attacked her. I ran to my room and my dad chased after me and tried to bust down the door when you two got here."
He glanced at Soundwave who put a hand on his shoulder.
"I know you're scared but we need to get out of here."
Daniel nodded grabbing a familiar bag that he always brought to their house whenever he stayed overnight.
He held Daniel as they left the house and blocked his view not wanting him to see his parents like that. They took him back to their house and he let Daniel rest while they boarded up the house not wanting anything to get in through the windows or doors.
Daniel shivered in distress and wrapped a blanket around himself. When they finished making sure the house was secure they cuddled on the couch and held Daniel as he cried.
"I'm sorry Daniel."
He kissed his forehead as he clung to him.
"How are you feeling?"
Soundwave held the both of them and he leaned on him for comfort.
"I can't believe they are gone. It feels unreal right now like their away on some business trip and you two are watching me right now until they come back."
"We're here for you and if you ever want to talk we'll listen."
"I know you two always listen to me and take care of me. Part of me feels guilty because they are my parents but I never felt like they cared about me. It was always the two of them and what they wanted. I could have died because of their actions and I feel angry at them but I also feel guilty for yelling at them."
Daniel began to cry as he talked and the two of them held him. He felt his heart squeeze painfully in his chest and he wished there was more that he could do.
Daniel ended up crying himself to sleep as the two held him making sure he knew he was safe and that they loved him.
