Work Text:
“You’d better have a really good reason for being out of bed.”
Cody really should be tested for some small amount of Force sensitivity, Obi-Wan thinks to himself. The commander has a sixth sense for any time Obi-Wan is about to do something Cody would disapprove of, even when they’re supposed to be on opposite ends of the Negotiator. Right now, for instance, Cody should be on the bridge and Obi-Wan has been placed on bedrest, but instead, they’re both in the corridor outside Obi-Wan’s quarters.
Or maybe Obi-Wan is just getting predictable after all these years.
“Really, Cody, I’m fine,” he huffs in indignation. It might have been more convincing if it hadn’t triggered another coughing fit. Cody certainly doesn’t look impressed.
“All due respect, sir,” he begins, knowing full well how much Obi-Wan hates sentences that begin that way. The latter half is never respectful in the least. “That’s clearly a load of banthashit.”
Obi-Wan levels a weak glare at his commander, but lets the comment stand otherwise.
Last week they were on Molavar searching for what turned out to be an abandoned Separatist outpost in the northern hemisphere when they were caught off guard by one of the planet’s famous dust storms. The men were fine – the filters in their helmets blocked most of the dust – but Obi-Wan inhaled enough to leave him wheezy and with coughing fits severe enough that he started coughing up blood. Cody fussed over him the whole ride back to the ship after the storm passed and the shuttles could reach them.
After Helix declared Obi-Wan would make a full recovery, Cody immediately shifted from worrying to lecturing. Apparently, this never would have happened if Obi-Wan wore armor and a bucket like Cody has been trying to get him to do since they were first assigned to each other. Or at least, that’s what Cody has told him no less than six times in half as many days. Obi-Wan has different opinions on that.
“C’mon, back to bed with you, General,” Cody says he places his hands on Obi-Wan’s shoulders to gently guide him back to his quarters. “Helix will have my hide if he finds out you’ve been ignoring medical orders again.”
“Cody, I have work to do –”
“No, you don’t. You’re officially on medical leave until the day after tomorrow. Your schedule has been cleared and we’ve already divvied up any work that can’t wait that long. The only thing you have to do now is rest.”
“Some of that requires a general to sign off on it,” Obi-Wan tries again as Cody punches his access code into the door panel. Obi-Wan regrets ever giving him that code. He narrows his eyes in another glare but the commander isn’t looking at him so it’s a wasted effort. Pity.
The door opens and Obi-Wan finds himself being pushed into his own room like a prisoner into a cell. Cody, his ever-unsympathetic jailer, swiftly confiscates the datapad Obi-Wan carelessly left out on his desk as the door hisses shut behind them.
“How long have we been working together? You think I haven’t figured out how to forge your signature by now?” Cody only raises an eyebrow at the noise Obi-Wan makes in response, which absolutely would never be described as a squawk. “Relax, I’m kidding. General Skywalker has already agreed to sign off on anything I can’t sign myself.”
“You told Anakin?” That noise probably could be called a squawk. Obi-Wan winces.
Cody gives him another unimpressed look. Honestly, if Cody’s expression were any drier, it could be mistaken for Tatooine. He nudges Obi-Wan towards the bed.
“Get some rest, General.”
Obi-Wan allows himself to be guided down onto the bed and tries valiantly to suppress a yawn. He has more luck pointedly ignoring Cody’s amused smirk.
“You know, if you’re going to boss me around like this,” he says instead, “you really should call me Obi-Wan.”
Cody chuckles and shakes his head fondly.
“Goodnight, sir,” Cody says automatically. Then softly, more deliberately, “Obi-Wan.”
Obi-Wan smiles and Cody quietly retreats from the room.
As he falls back asleep, the last thing Obi-Wan thinks is that he quite likes the sound of his name when Cody is the one saying it.
