Morgana only intended for Merlin to show his true colours. She most certainly didn't intend to bite more than she could chew.

Morgana is already the priestess of the old religion when she is found and brought back to Camelot after Merlin poisons her, which makes her more adept at magic and most of all finding out Merlin has magic.
