Chapter 1: The Mission

Chapter Text

“I presume Harry knows what he’s doing,” Lucas North said.  He was sitting in a small ferry cabin with Adam Carter.  “This is hardly the quickest way of getting there.”

“I don’t think he’s expecting anything to happen until the early hours of tomorrow morning and this way we should be into the country without any suspicions arising,” Adam replied.  “Although I agree, overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam isn’t how I’d have chosen to travel.”

“How much do we know?”

“Not much.  I don’t think Harry’s keeping anything back from us, he was complaining to Ros that he feels like he’s operating in the dark.  What were you told?”

“Very little.  I had an urgent message from Ros, telling me there was a change in priorities and asking me to leave Jo to finish up where we were and get the train back to London, while I drove to Hull where I was to meet you.”

“And meanwhile I receive a message from Harry telling me to meet him at King’s Cross station, which I did, to be presented with a ticket for the next direct train to Hull.  He also gave me a letter, telling me not to open it until I was on the train.”

“Ooh, classic spy stuff.  I didn’t think Harry would resort to real cloak and dagger intrigue.”

“I presume it was because King’s Cross station isn’t the ideal place for a conversation where there isn’t a risk of being overheard,” Adam said with a laugh.  “All the letter told me was that we are acting as backup for Section G and to do whatever we felt was necessary.  He’s also given me a phone, so I presume they’ll contact us via that.”

“Hmm, it sounds like Section G haven’t yet found their mole and are expecting trouble in that direction,” Lucas said thoughtfully.  “It might well tie up with something Jo and I found.”

“Does Harry know about it?”

“I assume so, we reported it to Ros this morning, so she’ll have passed it on.”

“What was it?”

“Just a few names which have cropped up more often than we’d have expected.  Neither of us recognised any of them, so I’m not really any the wiser.”

“But if Harry relayed the information through to Section G, it might have sounded alarm bells, especially if they have something major on at the moment.”

“And so you and I are on the overnight ferry to Rotterdam heading into goodness knows what,” Lucas said.

“Precisely!”
