Chapter Text
When Percy saw the two lines on the white stick, the first thought that came to mind was “fuck”. He immediately grabbed the other sticks off the bathroom counter and saw they also had the same two lines. His hand automatically went to his stomach as he tried to process the two lines on the white sticks.
“This can’t be happening,” he muttered to himself, his heart racing in trepidation.
As much as the omega loved children and had always wanted to have his own, Percy wasn’t sure if he was ready right now—not at this point in life. Two weeks ago, he just barely finished his sophomore year of college. What was he going to do?
Hours later, Percy was sitting at the kitchen island, still pondering what he would do with his pregnancy while he stared down at the test. That was how his boyfriend of five months found him.
In all honesty, Percy wasn’t sure what to make of his boyfriend. He had met Kyle at the beginning of the school year. They partnered up for a project, and since then, they have started hanging out outside school.
When Kyle had asked Percy out five months ago, he hesitated. Kyle was a cool guy, but Percy couldn’t see himself as more than just friends with him. He told the alpha this, but Kyle was insistent, telling Percy to give him a chance, and if it didn’t work out, he'd leave Percy alone.
Percy decided to give Kyle a chance. It was fine at the beginning. Kyle was really sweet, and the sex wasn’t bad, but their relationship still felt off. It just didn’t feel right. Even his omega knew it didn’t feel right. Percy could only think of one reason why they wouldn’t last as a couple: their different opinions on kids.
Kyle didn’t want kids. He never outright told Percy, but Percy knew. Whenever the topic of children came up, either through a reel he saw on Instagram or a post he read on Twitter, Kyle would laugh and say things like, ‘Man, I’m glad I don’t have kids. They’re annoying, and they ruin everything’.
Another proof of Kyle's dislike for children was whenever Percy volunteered to babysit his niece. When he would have his niece over, Kyle would make up an excuse to be away from the apartment or just distance himself from interacting with her. There was also the one time when Percy caught Kyle glowering at his niece disdainfully when he thought Percy wasn’t looking.
That was a sure sign of their relationship’s expiration date. Percy planned to break up with Kyle, but finding out he was pregnant threw a wrench into his plans. He wasn’t sure how this would pan out once Kyle found out about the pregnancy.
“I’m back! What’s for dinner?” Kyle called out. Percy didn’t answer, too lost in his thoughts. “Percy?”
Percy heard Kyle walking toward him but still didn’t look back to greet him, his eyes still on the pregnancy test.
“Percy, why aren’t you—? Oh.”
He took a deep breath and finally looked up at Kyle. The alpha’s eyes were glued to the pregnancy test sitting on the island. A long silence filled the kitchen as Kyle kept staring at the test, and Percy waited for him to speak up.
“How is that possible? We used protection, and I haven’t spent a heat with you yet,” Kyle managed to voice out.
Percy wanted to laugh. “Using protection isn’t always a hundred percent guaranteed, and it’s possible to get pregnant outside of heat,” Percy explained softly.
Silence took over again. With each passing minute waiting for Kyle to process the situation, Percy’s anxiety started to build up.
Finally, Kyle stepped over and wrapped his arms around Percy. “Oh, Percy. Don’t worry. Go get dressed, and I’ll take you to the clinic.”
Percy raised a brow. “What clinic?”
“To the abortion clinic, of course. Everything will be fine once we get rid of it.”
Dread immediately filled Percy’s stomach. The omega tore himself away, needing a safe distance between them. He stared at Kyle in disbelief. Percy didn’t know what to expect from Kyle, maybe breaking up with him, but he definitely didn’t expect this.
“You want me to get an abortion?”
“Yes,” Kyle replied, his brows furrowed. “We can’t have a child, Percy.”
Percy shook his head. “I’m not going.”
“Percy—”
“No,” Percy said, unyielding. “This isn’t up to you. I’m not getting an abortion.”
Kyle glared at him before pinching the bridge of his nose, clearly trying to reign in his anger. “Think this through, Percy. If you have the baby, you will lose your swimming scholarship.”
“I still have my other scholarships, and it’s not like I can’t afford the tuition,” he retorted stubbornly.
Which was true. His dad had the money and had offered to pay for his college tuition, wanting to lessen the burden on Percy and his mom, but Percy turned it down. His dad was already paying for his apartment. Percy was determined not to rely on his dad for everything.
“Percy, if you decide to have this baby, I will leave,” Kyle threatened. “I won’t help you raise it.”
“Okay,” he replied. Percy raised his hand, his palm facing up. “Give me your key.”
Whatever Kyle was thinking, he probably didn’t expect Percy to agree with him as his glare melted away and his eyes widened in astonishment. “You’re choosing it over me?”
“Yes, I’m going to keep my child.” Percy brought his other hand to his stomach. He was afraid, but Percy loved children too much to get rid of his own child. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and slowly exhaled. Percy might as well have ripped the bandaid off, too. “Before I found out I was pregnant, I was already planning to break up with you.”
“You what?” Kyle’s voice was like a crack of a whip, echoing in Percy’s apartment.
“I’m sorry, Kyle, but it wasn’t working. From the beginning, I tried to tell you that I couldn’t see you as more than a friend, but you wouldn’t listen.” Percy felt guilty with every word, but it had to be said. “I’m really sorry. I tried to make our relationship work, but it just didn’t feel right.”
Before Percy knew it, the alpha had pushed him, his back hitting the wall hard. Percy let out a pained whimper.
“You didn’t try hard enough!” Kyle growled angrily. He grabbed Percy’s arms and pinned him against the wall.
“Kyle—”
“I love you, Percy.” His grip on Percy’s arms tightened, making him wince in pain. “We could make this work. It’s all that thing’s fault. We need to get rid of it, and then we’ll—”
Percy saw red. He immediately pushed the alpha away and struck him in the face with his fist. There was a sickening crunch from Percy’s hand; pain started flaring, but he ignored it and glared down at his now ex-boyfriend lying on the ground, clutching his jaw.
“Get out. We’re through.” When Kyle tried to speak, Percy walked over to the island and picked up his phone. “Get out now, or I will call the police.”
Seeing that Percy was serious, Kyle got up from the floor and reluctantly headed to the door.
“Leave your key.”
The alpha glared at him and begrudgingly pulled out Percy’s spare key from his pocket, throwing it on the ground.
Percy let out a breath when Kyle slammed the door shut behind him. He slowly slid down onto the ground, cradling his injured hand to his chest.
Guilt tried to claw its way up Percy’s chest, but he pushed it down. It had to be done, and right now, Percy wasn’t in the wrong. Percy had expected Kyle wouldn’t be happy about the pregnancy, but it still stung.
He unlocked his phone and immediately dialed one on his speed dial.
“Percy?” Nico’s voice came through the receiver after the second ring.
“Can you come over?” Percy asked quietly. “And please bring Will. I think I might’ve broken my hand.”
Thirty minutes later, Percy was sitting on the couch with Nico and Will worriedly fussing over him.
“What happened?” Nico questioned as his mate examined Percy’s hand.
“I punched Kyle in the face.”
Nico and Will shared a look.
“I’m guessing he didn’t take the break up well,” Nico said.
His fellow omega and childhood friend knew about Percy’s feelings towards his relationship. Nico didn’t judge Percy when he shared his thoughts. He listened to Percy intently and offered him advice. Percy was grateful to have Nico in his life.
“That, and…” Percy trailed off. He winced as Will started to wrap his hand with bandages.
“Sorry,” Will mumbled.
“Perce?” Nico said, drawing back his attention.
Percy sighed and crooked his head towards the kitchen. “On the island.”
While Will finished wrapping up Percy’s hand, Nico walked over to the island. Percy resisted from cringing when Nico gasped. The younger omega quickly walked back to the couch, the pregnancy test in Nico’s hand.
“Is this what I think it is?” Nico’s brown eyes stared back and forth between Percy and the white stick in his hand.
“Yeah,” Percy confirmed quietly. “I’m pregnant.”
“Oh, Percy…” The younger omega immediately sat down on Percy’s other side, engulfing him in a tight hug. “It’s going to be okay. We’ll help you get through this.”
After everything that happened today, from him finding out he was pregnant to his confrontation with Kyle, Percy finally let his tears out.
“I’m scared,” he sobbed.
“We know,” Nico said comfortingly. “We’re here for you.”
Percy tucked his face into Nico’s neck, seeking comfort from his friend. When Will was done bandaging Percy’s hand, he put his arms around them, joining their hug.
They sat silently, only the sound of Percy’s sniffles filling the apartment. Nico was letting out his pheromones, the scent calming Percy down as he murmured comforting words.
A while later, Will got up and told them he would step out to get dinner for them. Will bent down to kiss Nico on the forehead and softly squeezed Percy’s shoulder.
After the alpha left, the two omegas shifted around on the couch, moving into a more comfortable position. They were now sitting facing each other, Nico holding Percy’s hands in reassurance.
“I need to tell my parents,” Percy managed to say, his voice hoarse from crying.
“Do you think they will be mad?”
Percy shook his head. “Mad? No. Disappointed? Maybe.”
“Do you want me to be there?”
“Please.”
He wanted to take painkillers for his aching hand, but Percy didn’t want to risk anything happening to his baby, so he opted to power through the pain.
Nico helped him book a doctor’s appointment scheduled for the next day. Percy wasn’t sure how Nico found an appointment so quickly, but he was thankful nonetheless.
Once Will returned with their dinner, they spent the next hour talking about the couple’s upcoming high school graduation. They were also excited to be attending college in the fall.
Percy was happy that they decided to attend the same university as him. He had really missed them, and he was grateful they would support him through his pregnancy.
Before the couple left, they helped Percy gather Kyle’s belongings and pack them into a box. Percy had drawn the line when Kyle suggested moving in together, so luckily, there wasn’t much to pack.
Nico had made Percy promise to call him so that he would be there when Kyle came to pick up his stuff, worried that the alpha might harm him. Percy promised, giving Nico another tight hug, and said goodbye to the mated pair.
Sometimes, Percy was envious of Nico. He and Will have been together for four years: three years of dating and one year of being mated. It was love at first sight for the young couple.
Growing up, Percy wanted to find the one that was meant for him and only loved him. He didn’t want to end up like his parents, especially his dad.
When they first met, his dad, a married man with three children, fell in love with his mom. Not knowing about his dad’s marital status at the time, Percy’s mom spent one night with him. The next day, Amphitrite, his dad’s wife, confronted them.
When his mom found out that she unknowingly had an affair with Percy’s dad, she was livid. She slapped his dad, scolded him for cheating on his wife, apologized to Amphitrite, and walked out.
She went looking for him a month later after discovering her pregnancy. Unexpectedly, Amphitrite was okay with the pregnancy even though she was still angry with his dad for cheating on her. What was even more unexpected was the fact that his mom and his now stepmother became best of friends.
Percy’s stepmother cared for his mother throughout the pregnancy and cared for him as if he were one of her own. His stepmother was the reason his half-siblings came to love Percy, too. His sisters Kymopoleia, Benthesikyme, and Rhode doted on him, while his brother Triton was overprotective of him.
It took a while, but his mom finally forgave his dad and became friends with him under the condition that they would never be more than that. Because Percy’s dad loved his mom, he readily agreed.
Percy’s family dynamic was strange. He loved his parents and his dad’s family, but he couldn’t imagine going through all of that. His dad was forever in love with two people: his stepmother and his mom. Even if he were to separate from his wife one day, he would never be more than a friend to Percy’s mother and the father of her child.
Now that Percy was pregnant, would he even be able to find the right person for him? Would they even want an omega who was impregnated by another? Would they care for his child like they were their own?
Percy took a deep breath and exhaled. He shouldn’t be worried about that right now. His main concern should be the baby in his stomach. All the fear was rushing back, but Percy knew he would be fine. He had Nico and Will to support him, and even if his family might be disappointed, they would still support him.
Getting ready for bed with his dominant hand wrapped in bandages was an issue, but he somehow managed. When he was finally lying in bed, Percy rested his hands on top of his stomach, caressing it.
“I’m sorry your dad won’t be a part of your life,” he whispered, “but I promise you that your life will be filled with love.”
Percy continued to rub his stomach until he slipped into dreamland.
