Werewolf by Dawn

Summary:

After fighting a werewolf, Marc enlists Dawns help to find a missing Steven. Khonshu had assured them creatures of the night obey his commands and wouldn’t hurt his avatar. But, trusting Khonshu is never a good idea… right? (Reviews are welcome!)

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

“Marc! You needed he-“ Dawn paused when she appeared with Anubis. The sight she witnessed caught her off-guard. Marc was holding a Wolfman in a half-nelson on the ground.

“Polly, you ever fight a werewolf before?”

“ can’t say I have.” She replied. “have you?”

“Well-“ Marc began to say before the creature kicked itself out of the position, and caused Marc to stumble back.

Dawn used the wrappings from her costume to tie the wolf, but he ended up grabbing the pieces of bandage and pulled Dawn closer. He tried to bite her, but ended up biting the handle of the spear, she quickly summoned. She used the small time of confusion and kicked the creature away from her. Trying her wrappings again, this time succeeding in tying him up.

“ do you know him?” Dawn asked

Marc looked at the struggling Wolfman. “ yeah, I do. His name is Jack Russell. We had a bit of a misunderstanding a while back. But we cleared it up. He thought of me as an enemy because of my ties to the moon. The wolf in him was jealous. But I thought we were passed that.”

“ evidently not.” Dawn said.

Marc leaned closer to the monster, and noticed something around his neck “ it could be that. That’s new.”

“ you want to try to get close enough to take off that necklace?” Dawn chuckled. “ Good luck. I doubt my wraps will last for long.”

The Wolf used his claws and ripped through the bandages.

“ right on cue.” The girl quipped.

Steven had taken Marc’s place so when the wolf tried to scratch his face, it got blocked by one of Steven’s truncheons. Then Steven smacked the werewolf in the face.

“We’re at this again, Jack?” Steven look to aside and waved at Dawn.

“Hi Paulena!”

The Wolf tried to attack Steven when his back was turned, but ended up getting hit again by the rod. Steven didn’t even turn around.

“Steven we need to distract it! We need…” Dawn noticed Anubis witnessing the battle, then reached into a pocket in her shorts. Out she pulled one of Anubis’ dog treats.
Steven blocked a punch by the wolf, but the animal used his foot while Steven was leaning and tripped him, causing him to fall on the floor. Steven covered his face with the truncheons, while wolf tried to scratch him.

Dawn yelled “ Hey, Air Bud!”

She held out the dog treat.
The wolf looked over just a second which left Marc (who replaced Steven) to grab the pendant from the monsters neck and pull it off. It proved a little difficult it as it seemed to be attached to the wolf, but Marc did it. The wolf howled until the necklace was gone.
Then he fainted and almost landed on Marc but Dawns bandages made it to him in time to cradle him and lay him down gently.

Marc stood and looked at the half-naked man.
“ that’s not Jack.” he pointed out.

“ how do you know?”

“ well, Jack isn’t white. This guy looks like his favourite spice is sugar. This guy…” he looked at the face of the man again “wait, I know this guy. I’ve seen him on the news. It’s that astronaut guy.”

“ Neil Armstrong?”

Marc blinked at her comment “what?”

She shrugged “I don’t know any other astronauts.”

“Jameson. That’s his name.” Marc remembered.

“ oh! That guy on YouTube that’s like Alex Jones and probably voted for Trump? Can’t be, that guy’s ancient.”

“ this has to be his son. Let’s get him home before he wakes up.” Marc cut the wrappings with his Crescent dart, and lifted the man over his shoulder.

Dawn handed the biscuit, still in her hand, to Anubis.
“ you know what to do.” She ordered.

Anubis howled and transported all four of them to J. Jonah Jameson’s house.

The man who was dressed only in a robe and boxers, sprang up from his reclining chair and grabbed his cell phone to record.

“ these freaks in costumes just appeared in my living room. They are trespassing! Isn’t a man’s own home safe anymore?”

“ we aren’t here to hurt you. We’re just bringing something back.” Dawn said, as Marc set the unconscious man on the recliner.

“ is that… Johnny? My boy? What did you freaks do to him? I’m calling the police right now! You are going to—“

“Hey. We found him like that. We know he’s a hero. We are heroes, too. We wouldn’t hurt him.” Dawn smiled.

J. Jonah Jameson looked at Dawn up and down, then asked “ aren’t you a little fat to be a hero, kid?”

Then, Marc punched him in the face. The man stumbled and dropped his phone. Steven, who took Marc’s place, also punched him in the face. This caused J. Jonah Jameson to fall to the floor. Jake then took Steven’s place and began kicking the man until Dawn told him to stop.

Jake agreed, then looked at his hand, which was still holding the gemstone. He noticed it was beginning to meld with his hand. It was glowing red as he tried to take it off. Once it was actually removed, the stone lost its shine. His hand, however, still contained the glow.

“ Dawn.” he showed the girl his glowing hand.

“ that’s not good.” She said, then turned to Anubis. “ take us to Khonshu.”

The god nodded, and howled again.
They were transported to a field of rye with Khonshu sitting atop a boulder, looking off a cliff .

“ do I interrupt you when you’re relaxing?” Khonshu asked.

“ Marc and I were fighting a Werewolf and—“ Dawn began to explain

Khonshu interrupted “ugh I hate werewolves.”

“You do? Why?”

“ they abuse the power of the moon.” The god looked at Jake, who is holding out his glowing hand. “ what happened to you?”

Jake shrugged “ninguna pista.”

“ if you were fighting a werewolf, then you probably came into contact with a moonstone.” Khonshu sighed, “ Normally, it turns humans into werewolves. But since you’re an avatar of me, the god of the moon, you should be fine. Creatures of the moon should obey me. If it did contain a Werewolf spirit, it’ll perish with my command.”

“ if it’s that easy, why didn’t you help us earlier when that thing was fighting us?” Dawn placed her hands on her hips.

“ couldn’t be bothered.”

“ you son of a—“ Dawn tried to take a step forward, but Jake held her back.

“ no, niniata. This is not your war.”

Dawn sighed “ can you let me know when your hand gets better?”

Jake nodded.

“ I’ll see you soon, Jake. Hey, Khonshu!”

The god turned to look at her “ yes?”

“Eat a dick!”

Anubis howled and the two disappeared.

Jake smiled at her comment, and said aloud “Ella me gusta.”

Khonshu shook his head “ I know. I do too.”

Dawn and Anubis were sitting at the kitchen table, playing chess. The girl moved her knight and put Anubis’ king and check.

“Check.” She called then the song Eye Of The Tiger began blaring out of her cell phone. “Hi Marc.”

She stood from the table and began pacing the hallway “ what’s up?”

“ hey Polly, uh… I have a question for you.”

“ shoot.”

“ have you… uh… have you seen Steven?”

She thought for a second “ not since last week, why?”

He sighed “ that’s what I was afraid of.”

“ why?” She repeated.

“ it was after the werewolf thing, right?”

“ yes. Now, again, why?”

He paused. “ that’s the last time I saw him, too.”

“ whoa.” She stopped in her place. “ yeah that’s bad. What do you need me to do?”

“ remember how you messed with my brain, and I said to never do that again?”

“ yeah?”

“ I need you to do that again.” he sighed, “ just make sure Steven is still in there. Maybe that glowing rock did something.”

“Oh, your hand stopped glowing?”

“ my hand was glowing?”

Dawn had to think fast “ well, the rock that was… uh… in your hand was glowing.”

“ oh yeah I have that rock here. It’s kind of a dull red now. It’s like it lost its juice.”

“ keep it with you, Marc, I might need it. Have you talked to Khonshu about it?”

“ yeah, him and I aren’t really on talking terms right now.” Marc admitted.

“ why?”

“ he’s a dick?”

“ if you’re just figuring that out now…”

Marc sighed, “ he wanted me to go back to the astronaut, and beat the shit out of him for damaging the moon.”

“ didn’t you already beat the shit out of him?”

“ that’s what I said! But he wanted me to make a statement. No more moon travel. The more it gets hurt, the weaker Khonshu becomes.”

“ good.”

Marc chuckled “ I also said that. Then he just… Left.”

“ OK Marc, Anubis and I will be right over once we finish—“ Dawn stepped back in the kitchen, and noticed the tables flipped upside down and chess pieces scattered on the floor. Anubis was off in the living room, pretending to read a book.

“ our game…”

Chapter Text

When the two found Marc in his apartment, he seemed disheveled. He was sporting sweatpants, and a wife beater, which was unusual for him. His face which was normally clean-shaven, had been growing a weeks worth of stubble.

“ whoa. Hey Marc, sit down, eh.” Dawn said, as she grabbed the arm of the pacing man, and led him to his bed.

“ I don’t need to sit. I—“

“ have you eaten anything?”

“ that doesn’t matter! We need to find Steven!”

“ Steven won’t want to come back to your body if it’s starving.” she looked to her God companion. “ can you warm up the soup in the fridge back home? I’ll give you three—“

He held out of hand in a ‘stop talking’ gesture “ you need not reward me for aiding the sick.”

With that he howled and left.

“ I’m not sick.” Marc insisted.

“ really? Because this house smells like the France pavilion at Disney World.”

He raised a brow to that comment.

“ cigarettes, Marc.”

He sighed, “ I’m stressed out, Polly.”

“ where’s Layla?”

“ doing a job for a friend of hers back in Egypt. I’m not going to trouble her with this.”

Dawn shook her head “ you know she’d want you to, right?”

“ yeah, I know.” he replied. “ I know.”

“ so why do you bring me here?”

Before he could answer, Anubis returned with a bowl of soup and handed it to Marc who downed it, as if he was stranded alone on an island.

Once he was finished, he took a breath “ I want you to make me go inside my head and find Steven. You can do that, right? You did it before.”

“Oh! Send you into that afterlife thing? I guess I can—“ Dawn remembered about Jake. If Marc goes inside his own head and find out about Jake, it would be all her fault. “ actually, uh… if Marc goes missing, it leaves the werewolf, spirits or whatever, to possess him. And, no offense, you’re a jerk when you’re possessed.”

Marc place to hand on her shoulder “Polly, you’re not going in my head, you don’t know the shit that goes on in there. It’s dangerous. I wanted you to help ME find Steven. Not you. You won’t survive inside my head.”

Dawn began to giggle “ do you listen to yourself? You sound like you should buy coloured hair dye and the new My Chemical Romance album at a local Hot Topic.”

“ I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

“ I won’t.” Dawn walked to the kitchen table and grabbed the necklace resting there, “ I’ll take the moonstone with me. Trap the bastard back inside. Anubis told me how.”

Marc looked to the God “ you know about this shit?”

Anubis shrugged “ We are entitled to hobbies, Marc Spector. Dawn, to get trapped you must touch the stone to it and chant an oath. You need to trap it in the name of the moon.”

“ in the name of the moon. Got it.” She nodded. “ anything else?”

Marc scratched the back of his neck nervously “ if you uh… if you see a kid running around in there, can you tell him I’m sorry?”

Dawn stood silently and nodded empathetically.

Anubis grabbed Dawn’s hand and faced Marc. The man hesitated when Anubis’ pointed finger touched his forehead. The God drew an Ankh on Marc’s head as if his finger was a pen with magical, glowing ink. Once drawn, Anubis took Dawn’s hand and placed her palm on the Ankh.

She vanished.

Chapter Text

Dawn found herself in a psychiatric facility. Instead of a hospital gown, she wore the sphinx shirt and jeans Marc bought her when they first met.

She saw her reflection in a mirror attached to the corner of the ceiling.

“ really Marc? This is how you see me?” She sighed, “ At least it’s not the pyjamas.”

Just then she heard a wolf howl, and began to run towards it.

There was a room she passed with its doors wide-open. She paused, walked back, and looked inside.

Jake Lockley was laying on a bed and throwing a hacky sack in the air and catching it.

“ Jake?”

He didn’t look away from his activity “ hi, niniatta.”

“ aren’t you… there’s a Werewolf somewhere here, aren’t you worried?”

“ not really.”

“ not really?” She huffed. “ What if it’s after Steven?”

“ even more reason to stay here. He sees me and my life is over.”

“ well, if Marc dies, or gets taken over by this Wolf thing then your life really will be over.”

“ that won’t happen.” he assured.

She placed her hands on her hips “ and how do you know that, Jake?”

He smiled and tossed the ball in the air again.

Dawn sighed “ Do you want me to close the door?”

“ Gracias, niniatta.”

She shook her head and closed the door behind her.

“ Steven!” She called out “ Steven!”

“ in the cafeteria!” She heard a response from the end of the hall.

She ran towards the voice and found Steven atop a lunch table with a stack of metal trays. Circling under him was a Werewolf with an odd red hue.

“Paulena! Stay back!” Steven warned.

The wolf looked at the girl but yelped, when Steven hit it on the head with a tray.

“Why isn’t it attacking you?” Dawn asked.

“Guess you missed that bit. Took me a while but these seem to hurt it. Maybe there’s some silver in the metal or some thing.”

Steven through another tray at it, then looked at Dawn, puzzled. “wait a tic, what are you doing here?”

“ let’s get to that part later. I need to touch it with this.” She held out the moonstone.

“ just grab another one of those Scooby snacks you’ve got.”

“ I would, but I’m not really dressed for the occasion.” She gestured to her outfit.

“ that Sphinx shirt still throws me off. It’s horrid.”

“ throws you…” she sighed “it can’t be that easy, can it?”

“ whatever you’re thinking do it fast!”

She pinched the bridge of the nose “ Steven, if I say something a little lame, will you judge me?”

Steven looked to the snarling wolf blow him “ yeah, I’m not really in a position to judge right now.”

Dawn took a breath and began swinging the moonstone necklace like a sling “ in the name of the moon…”

She threw it, and it hit the back the creatures head “ I’ll punish you!”

The beast yelped as it was sucked into the gemstone, causing it to glow once more.

Dawn offered a hand to Steven to help him off the table, and once he was face-to-face with the girl, he burst out laughing.

“ yeah, yeah, go ahead. I did save your ass, but whatever.”

Steven teased “ please next time when you put on your costume, can you do a little magical girl transformation?”

“ You know what, Steven, I’ll do it if you do it.” She shrugged. “ I guess this is… actually, there’s something I have to do first.”

“ here? What do you have to do in here?”

Chapter Text

She returned to Jake’s room, and when she was in the doorway, he threw the ball at her.

“ thank you.”

“ for what?” Jake asked.

“ for telling me how to trap the wolf.” She gestured to the ball.

“ I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“So, how’d you know it would be that easy, huh? Khonshu told you? Better yet, maybe he was controlling the wolf to just go after Steven. Probably as collateral for Marc disobeying him? You can correct me if I’m mistaken. But I’m not.” She leaned confidently in the doorway, throwing the ball in the air.

“ you think Khonshu would let something that dangerous in here and hurt me?”

She stopped throwing the ball “ but it didn’t, did it? It didn’t even go after you. Even when Steven was hurting it, it kept it gaze on him. It didn’t even go after me and I’m not exactly a light snack for it. So, it was just trying to go after Steven. That’s how you knew Marc wasn’t in danger. Steven wasn’t either, really. Just a little form of lame punishment.”

Jake smiled “ What a good theory.”

“ try to anticipate your opponents moves. Like chess.”

“ we should play some time.”

She nodded “you’d kick my ass.”

He laughed “ I probably would.”

Dawn began to close the door on her way out, but Jake stopped her.

“No, Dawn. I want it open.”

Chapter Text

Dawn reappeared in front of Marc in the flat, and when she did the mark on his forehead finished.

“ did you get it?” Marc asked.

She held out the glowing necklace “ yep! Hey, Newby, can you-“

The God took the stone and held it firmly “ it will be safe with me”

“ Polly, what’s that in your other hand?” Marc pointed.

She looked at the ball Jake had given her “ why is this here?”

“ what is it?”

“ it’s just a ball. It’s nothing. But… I brought it out of your head.”

Marc tried to comprehend that statement “ so, like Freddy Krueger? Could you bring Steven out?”

She shook her head “ I don’t know. Based on your state, I don’t think that’s a good idea. Are you able to find him?”

“ let’s see.” Marc paused, then blinked his eyes a few times, looked around, then covered his nose.

“Blimey, what crawled in here and died?”

“Steven!”

“ what has Marc been doing? Besides not bathing or…” Steven breathed into his palm and smelled his breath “brushing his teeth.”

“ he was worried about you. He couldn’t find you. He was scared. He lost his comfort blanket. Which is why I don’t think it’s a good idea to try to take you out of his head.”

“ whoa!” he exclaimed “ When was that an option?”

“ when I was there, I brought something in and took something out. I think you two should think about it. Don’t make any—“

“ I want to stay with Marc.”

“Oh.” She stopped “ OK then. Yeah. That’s probably for the best.”

Steven tried to explain his reasoning “ I was made for a reason. To help him. If I opted to try and make me a real boy, I’d be… I’d…”

“ you’d be abandoning him. I get it.” Dawn smiled. “ nobody wants that.”

“ thanks for your help, Paulena. Please keep the moonstone safe. We don’t want to go into your head and fight a werewolf.”

She shrugged “ You might like my head. Less crowded.”

“ I’ll take a crowd over a blank chasm of nothingness.”

Dawn laughed “ At least I’m not the one that smells like a skunk.”

Steven squinted his eyes and glared “ in the name of the moon…”

“Alright I can take a hint. Newby, do your thing! Bye Steven!”

Anubis howled and teleported him and his avatar away from Steven.

Steven paused and smelled the collar of his robe “ugh. It is a little skunky.”

Chapter Text

While Anubis was curled up on the foot of Dawns bed, he heard something downstairs and alerted her.

She told him to stay behind her then quickly summoned her spear and ordered wrappings to engulf the intruders legs so they couldn’t escape.

Then, she nonchalantly made her way down the stairs and began threatening the robber. “You think you can come into a girls house and steal her shit? Well you picked the wrong-“

She held her spear to the man’s neck and got a better look at his face “wait, I know you. You’re that astronaut guy. Why are you breaking into my house?”

“You live in Detroit, I thought you’d be used to it.” He joked “I wanted to find my necklace.”

“How did you find me?”

“I saw you on the video from my dads phone. I deleted it before he could post it anywhere, so don’t worry.” He assured.

“Yeah, that didn’t really asnwer my question.” She dispersed the wrappings from Johns legs.

John fumbled as he walked to a chair, “I saw you were wearing an Anubis mask. I know a guy who knows a guy who knows Death. Death knows Anubis.”

“Why did you need to find me?”

“Well, first of all, I’d appreciate my moonstone back.”

“To turn you into a werewolf again? Why?”

“I can control it. I know I can. When I do, I can really make a difference in the world.”

Dawn huffed “you’re an astronaut. You already make a difference.”

He shook his head “not to the little guys. I want to help the… the woman getting cornered in a back alley, or, or the guy getting mugged on the street. I want to swoop in and save the day.”

Dawn smiled “you want to be Spider-Man.”

He laughed “ironic, isn’t it?”

“What if you can’t control it?”

“Actually, that’s why I’m here.” He replied “that guy you were with, the guy in white. He kept calling me Jack. That’s all I remember. Jack. Why?”

“Oh, he thought you were a different werewolf?”

John stood up in excitement “a different… there’s another werewolf?”

Dawn shrugged “I guess so. My friend said they used to fight but they’re friendly now.”

“A friendly werewolf? No kidding. Maybe he can help me! What’s his name?”

Dawn scratched the back of her neck, “look, I don’t know him so I don’t think I—“

“Come on, I’ll find him eventually. I found you and in Canada, you’re dead and buried.”

“Jack Russell.”

John blinked “is that… are you serious?”

She sighed “that’s all I know. Honest.”

“Maybe your friend knows more. We can ask him, right?”

She shook her head “yeah, no. You’re gonna have to beat his name out of me.”

“Pack loyalty, I can respect that.” He nodded “I also thank you for your information and my necklace back.”

He held out his hand.

Anubis, who was witnessing the exchange, reached into a pocket in his vest and handed the moonstone to Dawn who gave it to the man.

“Thank you, Paulena.”

“Actually, I go by Dawn now. Dawn Dekay.”

“Guess Jack Russell is not that strange then.”

She placed her hands on her hips “well what do you call yourself?”

“Man-Wolf.” He asnwered.

“Man-Wolf? Not wolf-man?”

“N…no. Man-Wolf.”

“Okay. Good luck. Man-Wolf.”

He shook her hand “thank you, Dawn. I’ll try to put in a good word for you with my dad.”

“Don’t bother. If he publicly endorses me I’ll be cancelled so fast.”

John laughed “funny. That’s exactly what Spider-Man said.”

He exited the house and began to drive away in his rental car. Dawn closed the door when she realized

“Wait, he knows Spider-Man?”

She opened the door “you know Spider-“

He was already out of sight before she could find out her asnwer.
