LYANNA
August 27th, 2010
Grimes-Walsh Residence, King County, Georgia
THE THIRD DAY after Rick was shot, had surgery, and was placed in a medically induced coma. The day was normal until it was nearing noon and Shane called telling them to lock themselves inside until he arrived as things were getting worse outside.
It sent Lori into a panic and Lyanna into planning overdrive. "Calm down." Lya told Lori softly. "We'll hope for the best and prepare for the worst."
"Right." Lori said dropping onto the couch beside her sister. "How do we prepare for the worst."
"Well," She began thoughtfully. "Home might not be safe for much longer."
"How will we leave? What do we pack?" Lori asked panicking, though she wasn't pacing yet.
"The Starhome." Lyanna said reminding Lori of the semi-truck motorhome parked behind the house. It had been considered an unnecessary expense, but they spent holidays travelling so it was considered a useful luxury expense. It had sixteen beds, a full kitchen, and three bathrooms.
"Home on wheels." Lori said recalling fond holidays spent living and traveling in it.
"It's got a thousand-gallon water tank, a thousand-gallon fuel tank, a hundred-and-twenty-six solar panels, a large fridge-freezer, two dual-zone fridge-freezers, a washer-dryer combo, and plenty of storage space." Lya agreed with a wide smile.
"We should only bring necessities and sentimental things." Lori said softly looking at the house with sadness.
"Anything useful or meaningful." Lyanna agreed with a slight adjustment. "Don't we have short rectangular storage containers?"
"Yeah. We got them for seasonal clothes and spare bedding. We have a dozen rectangle and two dozen square." Lori answered and then shrugged. "They had a deal for buying bulk."
"We'll pack in those then. Each person gets a square for clothes. We can use a rectangle for shoes, each person can choose three pairs of durable shoes they can run in." Lya said writing what she said down on the list.
"If stores close, where will we get food? Or medicine? If stores close, then will the doctor's office even be open?" Lori asked fidgeting.
"We'll send Shane to the store when he gets home." Lyanna said soothingly. "We'll have him grab different first-aid kits, medicines, sewing kits, fabrics, educational books and stationery, food, drinks, powdered food and drinks, hygiene supplies, and cleaning supplies. We'll have him get as much of everything on our list as he can."
"Ok." Lori said softly. "What do we do if in a year the stores are still closed?"
"We'll hook up the trailer and take it with us." Lya said calmly. The trailer was forty-feet long with eighty solar panels and had a twenty-foot greenhouse of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and a small section of medicinal plants. It had a moonshine still, a smokehouse, a dehydrator, a freeze-dryer, a pelt processor, a biodiesel producer, two two-hundred-gallon water purifier, and ten floor to ceiling fridge-or-freezers.
The trailer is what they used when they went on long trips or camping as they hunted large game like black bears and white-tail deer. They also hunted rabbit and fished with the kids. Though they did hunt bobcats for their pelts.
"Okay, what about weapons?" Lori asked causing Lya to sigh. She knew what Lori was doing. Worrying about something else to not worry about Rick.
"Lori everything will be fine. Shane and I will pack all of the weapons in the house." Lyanna told her sister while rubbing her brow. "Let's just get to packing. You pack the sentimental things and I'll pack the useful."

HOURS LATER there were seven square containers of clothes, seven square containers of bedding, one rectangle container of shoes, two rectangle containers of sentimental things, a large box of dry food, a medium box of drinks, and nine rectangle containers ready to be filled along with ten square containers.
The house looked to be in the beginning stages of moving residents, but despite their sadness Lori and Lya felt more prepared and secure.
Shane walked into the house and looked around with confusion. "What's going on?" He asked as he relocked the door and made his way over to the couch where Lyanna and Lori were looking over the extensive list they had made.
"We've spent the day planning." Lya told him looking him over with worried eyes.
"I'm okay." He assured her. "Now, what plans?"
"Planning for the worst while hopping for the best." Lori said giving Lyanna a grin, he knew she was where those words came from having heard them a few times before.
"We each have a packed square of clothes and are sharing a rectangle with three pairs of durable shoes for each person. Everything sentimental in in two rectangles." Lya explained as Shane dropped into the seat next to her. "The large box is dry food, and the medium box is full of drinks. Nothing that's going to expire this month."
"We have a list of things we want to get as much as we can of." Lori said handing it over to him.
Shane looked it over and felt relief. He had spent the day filled with worry after the attack, but his family had listened to his worries and planned while waiting for him. "I can get this, but we'll be dipping into savings."
"That's fine." Lya told him with a soft smile as she leant over and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "We also want you get grab anything that you think could be useful which is why there is a general list on the top."
He looked at it and nodded. It was a logical list of useful or necessary things. "Anything else?" He asked curiously.
"Take the truck. We never removed the ten-foot trailer last time we used it." Lori said softly and he nodded looking at his sister with worry in his eyes.
"Buy gas cans and fill them all. Buy all the five-gallon water jugs." Kaya told him and he nodded. That wasn't on the list, so he grabbed the pen and wrote it down. "Also grab all of the more neutral bed sets."
"Right. This shopping trip will take a few hours and cost more than three-months' rent." Shane said and the two women nodded in agreement. "When I get back, we can start loading the Starhome, but if you're going out there you need to have a weapon."
"I'll start carrying my G17, G19, and G26 with a dozen magazines for each." Lya said easing the worries of Shane. He knew his wife could handle herself, they served six years and regularly trained together, but he would still feel better if she had her weapons on her at all times. "I'll also have my ring daggers on both forearms and calves."
"Good." Shane said and then hesitated. "Should we give the kids weapons?"
"Carl won't be touching a gun." Lori declared fiercely before deflating. "He also doesn't have any training."
"What about a pocketknife?" Lyanna asked the woman softly. "I'll give him a few lessons in the morning, he'll knows safety, that it's no toy, and how to protect himself."
"Alright." Lori agreed, if only because she wants her son safe and knows Lya will teach him right.
Lyanna looked at her husband and gave him a soft smile. "We'll give Arden and Rowan four pocketknives and two G26s each." She told him easing the rest of the worry out of him. Arden and Rowan have been training in martial arts and weapons since they were five, they were deadly when they needed to be.
He pulled her into a fierce kiss before heading out with the list, surer of his family and their safety than he was before. They had an escape route, supplies, moveable home, and weapons on their person so they can keep themselves and each other safe.
While Shane was shopping, Lya explained the situation to the children, that there was an unknown danger getting worse and that they were preparing as best they could. She told them to keep the agreed upon four pocketknives and two G26s on their person at all times before she gave them their locked weapons boxes and the key to their box on a chain that went around their necks.
After making sure the children understood the situation, she told them to empty their backpacks and to pack their favorite stuffed animal, art supplies, books, blanket hoodie, second favorite throw blanket, and bathroom bag. While the children went to do just that, they dragged Carl along to help them pack his own when they were done with theirs.
Lya grabbed her weapons box and unlocked it, pulling on six guns and forty ring daggers. She then relocked her box and put it in her own backpack which would be filled with her own art supplies, books, blanket hood, second favorite throw blanket, and bathroom bag.
Grabbing her other weapon boxes, she opened the tenth one and offered six pocketknives and two G26s to Lori. "One is for Carl tomorrow and the second is when you eventually decide to allow him a backup." Lyanna explained causing Lori to take the holstered guns and knives. "One gun on your hip, one on your calf. One knife in each shoe, one on a forearm, and one in a pocket."
"Thank you." Lori said putting them all on, putting the extra knife on her other forearm and Carl's in her other pocket.
"No problem. Why don't we gather all the locked boxes and then pack our backpacks. I have two dozen extras we'll bring. You can pack one for yourself and one for Rick." Lya said and at her raised eyebrow, she shrugged with a smirk. "Bulk sale."
They laughed as they walked up the stairs. It took half an hour to bring all the locked boxes and hidden weapons downstairs and put each weapon into a locked box. Lori was in disbelief at the dozens of weapons and locked boxes hidden in her home until Lyanna reminded her that she lived with three ex-military of which two were now cops.
Another half hour was spent packing their bags. Lori and Rick didn't have blanket hoodies or second throw blankets, so Lya pulled out two of her and Shane's for them. Lyanna and Shane had matching black blanket hoodies and white rabbit fur throw blankets, Lori got a light green blanket hoodie and dark green throw blanket, and Rick got a light tan throw blanket and blanket hoodie.
Finally, when they were done, Lya made a decision and she and Lori grabbed four square containers and rolled all of the blanket hoodies and throw blankets in pairs. When they finished with the throw blankets and blanket hoodies from everywhere else in the house, the went to the twins' room.
"Hey." Lyanna greeted the laughing children.
"Hey mom." Rowan said with a wide smile. "What's up?"
"I was wondering if you'd be up to donating the blanket hoodies and throw blankets you were going to leave?" She asked and the twins shared a look before nodding. They got blanket hoodies three sizes too big so Lya could wear them comfortably. The colors were bright or pastel.
"Sure." Arden answered for them with a shrug. The three children helped the two women roll all of the blanket hoodies and throw blankets in pairs before them went into the squares. "Can we keep our body pillows too?"
Lya looked at the soft pillows and signed, nodding. "We'll bring all of the soft pillows." She said getting a cheer for the children. "But I'm going through your closets and taking all of the durable clothes you're leaving behind to be donated."
"Deal." Rowan agreed shaking his mother's hand with a wide smile.
"What are we going to pack the clothes in?" Lori asked as they walked downstairs to deposit the four squares with the rest.
"Storage totes. We'll put them under the raised bunk in the last cabin. We'll do one for male and one for female." Lya told her with a smile. "That's where we'll put the new neutral bed sets as well. We'll put the paired throw blankets and blanket hoodies under the opposite bed with all of the spare backpacks."
Quickly, the two totes were filled with clean and durable clothes from summer shorts and tank tops to winter jackets and jeans. The final thing they did was fill a square with clean towels. That left five squares and nine rectangles for all that Shane would bring home.
Already Lyanna was mentally mapping out where each square and rectangle would go.
The nine rectangles would go into the two cabinets of the first cabin. The four squares would have smaller kits of the stuff in those eight rectangles and go in the storage bay storage next to the stairs. Their bedding and clothes boxes would be in the small closet at the foot of their top bunk in the first cabin.
The two sentimental rectangles would be underneath the first-left and first-right bottom beds. The shoes rectangle would be under the back-right.
The locked boxes would be in the entertainment center and behind the rectangles under the three beds while the larger ones would be in their top-bunk bedrooms or under the bottom back-left bed. Most of the food and drinks Shane brought back would be going into the trailer while the fuel would go into the storage bays.
Settled with the mental organization, she voiced the layout to Lori who would be helping her organize and put everything in their spot. Once both women had a method to the coming chaos, they began to converse about how much of the planning was similar to when they were planning an extreme camping trip.

SHANE WAS RELIEVED when he parked behind the house and walked through the door to see his wife and sister both armed. He shared a kiss with his wife and was filled in on the organization and placement everything would take before they began to put what was already packed away.
Once everything from the house was stored in the Starhome, they put all of the drinks into the trailer, they filled half a fridge, stacked a dozen cases of water, and put two dozen five-gallon jugs on the two racks that were in the trailer specifically for that type of jug. Shane connected the hose to the purifier and turned the water on before helping the women bring the food into the house to be organized.
While Lyanna worked on the food, Shane brought everything into the house for Lori to sort into rectangle containers. Then, when Shane had finished, he moved the gas cans into the storage bays before checking on the water purifier. Seeing that it was near full, he turned off the hose and hooked the trailer up to the Starhome before dumping the two-hundred-gallon tank of purified water into the thousand-gallon water tank and turning the hose back on.
As Shane entered the house again, he made a mental note to fill the Starhome fuel tank the next morning. He gave his wife a kiss and asked her where she needed him. "Put these in the smokehouse?" She asked pointing to a large tray of seasoned cut meat before pointing to the next tray with more racks. "And this one in the dehydrator?"
"Sure." he agreed getting a soft kiss on the lips. She got back to work and by the time all of the meat was ready to be put into the smokehouse or dehydrator, Lori was done and helping Shane on his trips back and forth, the rest of the food was stored away, and the smokehouse and dehydrator both had another five full rounds before it all would be done.
On the plus side, everything was done except the meat and the fuel tank. Exhausted, an alarm was set and the three fell asleep on the couch.
