Work Text:

Kai and Jesse have found themselves on a stakeout together. Again. To be honest, Kai does appreciate the alone time with his boyfriend except said boyfriend is obviously not in the best of moods at the moment.

“This is the best,” Jesse says in perhaps the most sarcastic way ever to exist, “follow Frank Howell all the way from his apartment… to his work… where we’ll sit and wait for the next twelve hours.”

Now, Kai loves Jesse and he understands him really well but truthfully, he has no idea what’s causing him to act like this. “Alright, what is going on, Jesse?” Kai intervenes. Jesse leans against the car door, acting nonchalant. “Nothing. Living the dream.” Kai resists the urge to roll his eyes.

“Do you want to talk about it?” He asks because usually, Jesse loves to talk. He’s the people person in their relationship: a solid, reliable communicator. “Do you want to talk about your Canadian girlfriend?” Jesse retorts back, turning to look at Kai.

The younger man’s cheeks darken a little and he looks down at his lap, embarrassed. “I panicked, okay? Lucy clocked me for having personal experience with hotels and dating and not wanting anyone to know. Besides, she didn’t believe it anyway. And not everyone knows you’re Canadian, right?”

Jesse reaches over and grabs Kai’s hand. “You’re so stupid, Kai.” The mentioned man whips his head up fast, staring at Jesse in confusion. “We don’t… go to hotels because I don’t want anyone to know. I just don’t want Gracie or Jake walking in on us and potentially scar them for life. Plus, I like treating you to room service and free breakfast.”

Kai twists their hands around so their fingers are clasped. “You mean that?” He asks softly. “Yeah, babe, I do. I wouldn’t mind telling people. I just don’t want anyone, especially the team or my kids, finding out in a way that’s not us telling them. I think we… you deserve better than that.” Jesse explains further and squeezes Kai hand, immediately reciprocating the bright grin Kai gives him.

Listening to a sudden impulsive thought, Kai leans over the console and kisses Jesse quickly. Usually, they don’t do PDA while they’re on-duty but both of them are fine with this being a minor exception. “Now, seriously, what’s up?” Kai asks, letting go of Jesse’s hand and reeling his own back in.

Jesse sighs in defeat and looks out the window next to him. “It’s just that this is our team: our case. Sam Hanna is searching the victim’s plane for kilos of illicit narcotics and we’re surveilling a parking lot.” Jesse gestures to the area in front of the car. “They’re both important jobs.” Kai says back. “They’re both our jobs.” Jesse mutters.

“Anyway, I thought you were avoiding planes these days.” Neither of them have forgotten about Jesse’s recent kidnapping. Kai had been proud of his boyfriend for landing the plane but still felt guilty that he wasn’t there for Jesse. Jesse said there was nothing to be guilty about, that Tennant was there to talk him through it, but it didn’t help Kai feel much better.

Jesse turns and glances at Kai with a knowing look. “Not when they’re on the ground.” He reasons. “Anyway, that’s not the point, alright? It’s just… I’m saying, lately, it feels like everywhere we go, Sam Hanna’s there.” Kai goes to respond when he notices the giant figure looming over Jesse’s window. Speak of the devil.

“Uh, Jesse.” He says and Jesse picks up that he’s staring past him at the window. He turns to look and is jump-scared by the man himself, Sam Hanna. He nods, trying to act like he wasn’t just talking about him. “Hey, Sam.” Sam nods back and goes to get into the backseat.

Jesse looks over at Kai in the passenger seat immediately, sporting a “what the fuck” look on his face. Kai tries not to react outwardly at that. “Hey,” Sam greets Kai and Jesse and accepts the fist bump that Kai offers him. “fellas.”

Though Jesse doesn’t know the man, he’s still a conversationalist and they should learn about Sam’s findings. “Figured you’d, uh, break the case by now. No drugs on Brookes’ plane?” He asks. He misses the look Kai gives him; Sam may not know Jesse too well but Kai does and he can detect that hint of attitude in his tone.

“Not so far. MCRT took everything back to the workshop to give it a once over in the morning.” Sam replies and Kai turns to look at the man to ask a question. “And the Commander at Atsugi was convinced Brookes was smuggling?” “Her flight records matched up with an upswing of cocaine abuse at the base. He opened an investigation, she was put on notice.” Sam explains.

“Well, considering she was still flying two days ago, clearly they couldn’t prove it.” Jesse deducts. “If I’m under investigation for drug smuggling, I’m gonna lay low: keep my nose clean.” Kai reasons. “Unless I’m being forced to keep going. In which case, I’m caught between the cops and the bad guys.”

“Or maybe buy a digital recorder, try to get leverage.” Sam is assessing their surroundings, turning back and forth in his seat. “Still leaves the question, who was she trying to get leverage from?” Jesse’s gaze meets Kai’s, which reminds Sam of something.

“Oh, congratulations by the way.” He says curtly, changing topics completely. Jesse’s eyebrows furrow and he turns to look back at Sam. “For what?” Sam meets his eyes for a second before turning to Kai. “On your relationship.“

Kai resists the urge to hide his face in his hands. “This is exactly why I said no PDA.” Jesse murmurs to him, genuinely embarrassed by the fact that the first person to find out about them is someone he doesn’t really know. Sam nods again. “That’s a good rule, Jesse. As long as you keep it out of the workplace, I don’t see a problem with it.”

Jesse groans quietly at that. “Also, I don’t care that you’re both men. My daughter, Kamran, she likes girls. I don’t have any problem with it.” A little bit of tension escapes the air and Kai recovers first. He turns to give Sam another fist bump. “Thanks, man.” It’s reciprocated with a small smile included.

“Please… don’t tell anyone.” Jesse pretty much begs, not wanting an outsider to completely ruin what they have at NCIS. “Sure thing.” Sam agrees. “But you should let Tennant know as soon as possible. Get that paperwork for HR done.” Jesse sighs in relief, glancing over at Kai who gives him a smug grin. Jess rolls his eyes at that, albeit fondly.
