Sonic X: Worlds Cross

Summary:

A reimagined/adaptation of the first Sonic X episode.

Notes:

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read this. I appreciate it and thank you for your time!

I wrote this screenplay a few years ago when I was first learning the format. At the time I believed it would be a series (hence the ending) but have since decided not to continue it.
That said, I thought it a shame to just leave it collecting virtual dust and so published it here for anyone who is interested.

Work Text:

Eggman's Base, Planet Mobius, Night

Darkness surrounds the base, nothing but a few metal fences can be seen with keep out signs, small face stickers on them with bushy moustaches and goggles, resembling the likeness of Doctor Eggman.
A tower's silhouette looms in the night's mist, shadows of robots move about below completing various tasks. No mortal life in sight.
In the distance, a lone creature stands on the edge of a hill looking down at the tower. Obscured in the darkness, his blue fur and green eyes are only slightly visible, a black mic piece near his mouth.
In a burst of speed he zooms down the hill, hops over the fence and into the base, leaving a trail of blue energy behind him.
The robots, peaceably going about their business seconds earlier, spring to life. Some take on animal shapes, wolves and bears. Others transform into hulking forms of lizards.+
Doctor Eggman comes through on the intercom, sending commands to his metal troops.
Eggman; Destroy the Hedgehog!
Sonic laughs and spins into a ball, his spikes turning into a chainsaw like killing machine, shredding any robot he comes into contact with. Bolts and other parts fly, sparks and smoke replace the night's mist.
Sonic; This the best you got Egghead?!
Landing on his feet the Hedgehog stares up at the tower, taking in it's steel body and yellow mushroom shaped top floor.
A man's outline is seen at the window, shaking his fist.
Behind Sonic two more robots appear. Red in colour, both aiming their guns and demanding his surrender.
Sonic; (Throws his white gloved hands up and turns) Come on now boys, no need for violence. I just wanna talk with Doctor Egg carton.
Shots ring out, Sonic zig zagging out of range and ripping into the robots, his spikes sawing them in half.
Eggman; You fools!
More robots fall and Sonic runs for the Doctor's tower, busting his way through the door.

Eggman's Tower, Night

Inside of Eggman's tower Sonic races from room to room searching for the Doctor, knocking over electronics, test tubes, and janitor robots as he goes.
Static from the mic erupts, the Hedgehog stopping and holding the piece in place as he listens.
Tails; Hey Sonic, do you read me?
Sonic; Loud and clear little buddy. Whatcha got for me?
Tails; It looks like Eggman has all the Chaos Emeralds stashed at the top of the tower, from the frequencies I'm picking up, he's charging something with them.
Sonic; Time to see what it is. Chat with ya later Tails.
Clicking the mic off Sonic burns up the corridors of the tower bypassing elevators in favor of speed, reaching the top in seconds, busting in the door with his spin dash.
As the dust clears he strolls out, a smirk on his face.
Sonic; Alright Eggy, where are you?
Eggman; Your too late, my cannon is almost powered up.
The Doctor, dressed in a red jumpsuit, goggles and light brown moustache prominent, stands by a switch on top of a platform, several crab like robots guarding him.
Eggman; All I have to do is turn it on and I'll blast Paradise city to ashes.
Sonic; You couldn't scratch your butt before I stopped you let alone pull that switch.
Eggman; Why you crude...GET HIM!
The Crab bots roll down the platform their machine guns firing, bullets spraying across the room hitting pieces of equipment and busting windows, but failing to hit the Hedgehog.
Sonic ducks and spins, landing on top of one Crab, using it as a shield moving closer to the platform. Bullets ping and smash into the malfunctioning bot, wire and smoke appearing.
Throwing it aside getting close enough Sonic moves up the platform ramp and lands a solid punch on Eggman's face, sending the round man tumbling backward smacking his head on a wall.
Eggman; Shadow now!
From the side door on the platform a black Hedgehog with red streaks down his spikes emerges, slamming his body into Sonic throwing him back down with the Crab bots.
Eggman; Pull the switch! Pull the switch!
Sonic sits up groggily being greeted by machine guns in his face. He watches the black Hedgehog pull the lever down.
A white flash envelops them all.

Station Square Draw Bridge, Planet Earth, Night

A large draw bridge comes into view, a line of cars of various kinds and makes backed up, horns and shouts blaring in unison at whatever is blocking the way.
Two police cruisers are seen going down the bridge passing the cars and pulling up close to the problem, getting out with pistols drawn.
A red headed man is leading them, hair bright orange. Unlike the rest he keeps his weapon holstered, a curious look crossing his face.
Coming into see what they are looking at we see Sonic sprawled unconscious, his face towards the sky.
No one else is around him, Doctor Eggman or that black Hedgehog is nowhere to be seen.
The red head police Sergeant gets closer to him, suspecting it's a dead animal of unknown species.
Tamara Jenkins, the Sergeant's African American partner, comes up next to him.
The shocked look on her face says it all.
Tamara; Jesus...Is it dead do you think?
The Sergeant bends down examining Sonic, tilting his head this way and that hoping to get a better view.
He spots the Hedgehog's chest rising and falling gently, a positive sign of life.
Tamara; Sam?
Sam; It's alive.
Sonic stirs, causing Tamara to aim her gun but Sam quickly puts her arm down and shakes his head.
Sonic; (Mumbles) Extra chili dogs please, hold the onions.
Both fall back, Sam finally whipping out his pistol and pointing it directly at Sonic's head.
Slowly the Hedgehog comes to, eyes flickering open and looking around in a confused daze, unable to recognize where he is.
He seems to not notice the humans at first his mind so clouded, standing and stretching. It is only when he is fully awake that he sees the lineup of cars and the police staring at him.
Sonic; Uh, hi?
Voices of dismay carry from the traffic jam, a woman screams, followed by dead silence.
Sonic sees flashbacks of the black Hedgehog pulling the switch, remembers the white light covering him, and it's warm heat putting him under.
It clicks.
This isn't Mobius.
Sam; How can it talk?
Sonic; Hey pal I'm not an it, I'm a Hedgehog OK? Mind telling me where I am?
Sam and Tamara back away from him, each having their hand on their firearm.
Sam; (Clears his throat) Take aim!
Sonic; Whoa, wait---
Orange cracks light up the night littering the ground with shell casings, civilians scream in disarray.
In the chaos the Sergeant and his partner never notice their prey escape, zooming down the bridge to safety.

The Thorndyke House, Night

Christopher Thorndyke, a boy in his late teens, medium brown hair, blue eyes, sits by his family pool reading a Shannara novel, unable to fall asleep inside.
Wearing a white housecoat with blue pajamas underneath Chris is lost in the world of the book, not even bothering to look up as police sirens blare past his home.
His concentration is only broken by the sudden yelp of something falling into the pool from above, hitting the water with a hard splash.
Throwing the novel aside Chris runs to the water's edge and peers down trying to make out the figure of whatever fell in.
Seeing what appears to be an injured animal he throws off his housecoat and dives in, reaching for the creature, wrapping a hand around one of it's legs and managing to haul it up, placing it along the pool's edge.
The animal, to his surprise, is alive, spitting up water and wiping at it's mouth.
It's then that it dawns on Chris that this is no ordinary pet of a neighbour or stray cat.
Blue spikes cover it's black, white gloves on what should be paws, and red shoes with white straps on it's feet.
The creature turns to face him, a smile on it's face.
Sonic; Thanks for the save, I owe you one bud.
Chris shouts and stumbles back, which seems to irritate the creature.
Sonic; I ain't going to hurt you jeez. Why is everyone so scared of me?
Sonic moves over to Chris who shrinks back, extending his hand.
Sonic; The name's Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog.
The boy, realizing he's in no danger, accepts the strange creature's hand and stands up, towering over it.
Chris; It's..nice to meet you. I'm Christopher.
Sonic; (Winking) Right back at ya. Say Chris, would you mind telling me where I am? I tried asking a bunch of guys in blue earlier buuuut they kinda got freaked out and started shooting at me.
Chris; You were the one the cops were chasing?
Sonic; Yeah. I woke up on this big bridge with them surrounding me and when I asked where I was, pop pop (mimics holding a gun and shooting) so I dashed off in a hurry.
Chris; How did you end up in my pool?
Sonic; Wrong turn. Mistook this place for my buddy Tail's garage back home and hopped over. You know the rest.
Chris fetches a towel and Sonic dries himself off, looking like a blue puff ball once he's finished. Fur and spikes sticking up.
Chris can't help but laugh.

Chris's Room, Night

A bedroom comes into view, clothes and books scattered across the floor, a soda bottle filled garbage can by the door.
By the bed a window slides open, Chris and Sonic stuffing themselves through quietly, the Hedgehog scrambling to lift himself up and over, needing a bit of help from the teenager.
Once both are in, the boy puts a finger to his lips and goes to his door, gingerly opening it and looking out.
Satisfied no one heard them come in, he closes it back up and looks at Sonic.
Chris; We should be OK, my grandpa and Mr. Tanaka and Ella are all asleep.
Sonic nods and jumps up on Chris's bed, kicking his feet up.
Sonic; You never told me where I am yet.
Chris; Oh right, sorry. Station square.
Sonic;(Looks confused) Never heard of it.
Chris; Uh, it's right next to Toronto?
Sonic; Where?
Chris; Toronto Ontario? In Canada?
Sonic; What's Canada?
Chris; (Growing frustrated) It's where we are now, the country we live in.
Sonic; Eggman really screwed up this time.
He traces an imaginary line with a finger on the mattress, becoming lost in thought.
The teenager joins him, sitting on the edge of the bed.
Chris; Who's Eggman?
Sonic; A bald headed, bespectacled loser who fancies himself a scientist. It's his fault I'm here.
Chris; How? Where are you from?
Sonic; It's a long story Chris, but the short version is I'm from Christmas island, born and raised. From a planet called Mobius. Eggman's latest invention messed up, and instead of doing it's intended purpose, sent us to your world.
Chris; This Eggman person is here too?
Sonic; Not just him, his robots too. And that black Hedgehog.
Chris goes to ask something else but movement outside the door stops him.
Quickly he ushers Sonic into his closet and slides it closed.
A knock comes.
Going to his bedroom door, Chris puts a sleepy look on his face and opens it. A thirty something year old Japanese man in a white shirt and lounging pants is waiting on the other side.
Tanjiro Tanaka, his butler.
Chris; (Rubbing one of his eyes) What is it Mr. Tanaka?
Tanaka; I heard noises coming from your room, master Chris, and wanted to make sure you were alright.
Chris; I'm OK, just must've been sleep talking is all.
Tanaka nods, bows, and goes back down the hallway. Chris watches him enter his room then shuts the door and retrieves Sonic from the closet.
Sonic; Next time give me a heads up will ya. Smells like feet in there!
Chris; Sorry, I couldn't risk Mr. Tanaka seeing you. God only knows what would happen if anyone found out you were here.
Sonic; Hopefully not a replay of the bridge episode.
Chris; Tomorrow I'll show you around downstairs. Everyone will be busy so it'll just be us in the house.
Sonic smirks and gives a thumbs up in approval as the scene fades out.

Thorndyke Living room, Day

Daylight shines through the window, the morning rays of sun lighting up the Thorndyke living room. A simple affair, a black sofa and flat screen TV, a small oak coffee table separating them.
Sonic, a blanket wrapped around him, is sitting watching the news, a red headed woman appearing with Sergeant Sam standing outside the local police station.
Scarlet; This is Scarlet Garcia for Station Square Today. I'm standing outside the Station square police precinct with Sergeant Samuel Ashmore. Last night the Sergeant and a team of officers came upon a strange creature on the draw bridge connecting Station Square with Charleston Bay blocking traffic. Sergeant, can you tell us about your experience?
Sam; We responded to a traffic jam caused by an unusual disturbance, thinking it was a drunk driver or perhaps an abandoned car. But when we got there, we were surprised to find a blue animal blocking the way.
Scarlet; What kind of animal was it?
Sam; A Hedgehog. It was bigger than average and became aggressive, so I made the decision to put it down. Unfortunately it escaped.
Scarlet; Are you saying it's loose in the city?
Sam; We can't be one hundred percent certain, but it is a likely possibility yes.
Sonic shakes his head and turns it off.
Sonic; Aggressive? So pulling out your guns and trying to shoot me first doesn't count as aggressive Mr. Police man?
Chris; (O.S) What are you saying Sonic?
Sonic; Nothing! Just saw something on TV that bugged me.
Chris; (O.S) Do you want something to eat?
Sonic; Sure, got any chili dogs?
Chris walks down stairs, wearing a black hoodie and grey jugging pants.
Chris; We have hot dogs in the fridge, but no chili dogs.
Sonic; Ketchup?
Chris; Yup, we got ketchup.
Sonic; (Giving a thumbs up) OK, I'll have three.
Chris goes off into the kitchen. Sonic turns the TV back on and starts to flip through the channels when Scarlet Garcia pops up again.
Scarlet; This is Scarlet Garcia reporting live. We have just received word that the military has caught a creature resembling a child sized yellow rabbit near Central Park.
An Anthropomorphic rabbit pops up onscreen in a brown dress, locked in a cage surrounded by armed guards.
Sonic drops the remote, recognizing her.
Sonic; Cream!
Chris; (O.S) You want cream on your hot dogs? Really?
Bolting from the couch Sonic is out the door in a flash.

Central Park, Day

Hiding behind a car Sonic scouts out the park, the same armed soldiers he saw on the news patrolling the area, their rifles at the ready.
Twenty men guard Cream, whose cage sits on a patch of grass in the middle of the park grounds. The rabbit, eight years old, looks out sadly from behind the iron bars.
Sonic; Don't worry Cream, I'm gonna bust you out of there.
The Hedgehog steps out from the car and walks slowly to where the closest soldier stands guard, waving at her enthusiastically.
Sonic; Excuse me miss, but uh, could we chat?
He dodges the woman's rifle butt attack and spin dashes past her, making a run for Cream's cage, avoiding the other soldiers.
Female soldier; Intruder!
All the troops turn in the direction of Sonic, some exclaiming their shock, others scrambling to fire, he smirks.
Sonic; It's never easy.
Ducking and jumping over the bullets he uses his spin dash attack to bust open Cream's cage, snatching her up in his arms and rushing across the park to safety.
Cream; Sonic! It's you!
Sonic; Hang on, we aren't in the clear yet.
Three soldiers come out of nowhere, their rifles trained on the Hedgehog and rabbit.
Sonic, thinking on his feet, throws Cream into the air above their heads and slides in between one of their legs, catching her as she is about to hit the ground and blasts off into the brush, the soldiers going after them.

Station Square, Day

Breaking onto the street Sonic holds Cream close to his chest as he swerves around oncoming traffic, behind him comes police cruisers and military cars.
The chase leads both parties throughout Station Square, passing schools, restaurants, a train station, and a postal worker delivering mail, Sonic knocking his bag to the ground, letters spilling out onto the pavement.
Sonic; Sorry!
We hear the mailman yell a curse that is quickly swallowed up by the police sirens and car horns. Cream holds tight to Sonic's back fur as he hops over a soccer mom van and swings into an alleyway.
The police and military men slam on their breaks, colliding with one another, the smashed vehicles blocking off Sonic's escape route.

The Thorndyke Living Room, Day

Sonic and Chris stand in front of the couch while Cream sits on it, drinking a glass of milk and eating a chocolate chip cookie.
The Hedgehog is surprisingly relaxed, just grateful to have a friend of his safe and sound. Chris looks anxious and worried.
Cream; (As she chews) How did you find me Sonic?
Sonic; A news reporter broadcast it on that TV there (points behind him to the flat screen) and I kicked it into overdrive to get to you.
Chris; You nearly got both of you killed.
Sonic; Sometimes risks are necessary.
Chris; Even when they put others in danger?
Sonic; If I hadn't done anything Cream would have been taken away, and I may never have found her again.
Sonic moves to join Cream on the couch, the rabbit snuggling up close to him.
Chris sighs, knowing he is right, and goes to look out the window, pulling back the blinds.
Chris; At least no one saw you come here. The attic has enough space for Cream to stay for now, I'll prepare a bed with some blankets.
Sonic; Thanks Chris. (Looks at Cream) How did you get here? Where are Tails and Amy? You guys weren't near Eggman's base when that black Hedgehog pulled the switch.
Cream; We were all crowded near the X Tornado listening to you battle Eggman's creeps and then all of a sudden a big light broke across the sky (she motions with her arms for effect), eating us up. We woke up in someone's yard and men came and took us away.
Sonic; Where did they take Tails and Amy Cream?
Cream; I..I don't know. (She starts to tear up). They separated us into different cars. I haven't seen them since yesterday....
Sonic takes her in his arms and consoles her.
Sonic; Don't cry. I'll find them, I promise. Chris, come here.
Chris walks over and sits on the opposite side of the couch, his facial expression giving away that he knows what Sonic is about to ask.
Sonic; I know you already saved me, and I owe you big time, but you gotta help me save my friends, there's no one else I can turn to here.
Chris; Sonic, the military has probably taken them to a secret base by now. There's no way I could find that information out.
Sonic; What's the closest military base to Station Square? If they aren't there, there has to be info about them.
Chris; Think about what you're saying. You are asking me to help you break into one of my country's military bases, to commit a crime against Canada. Do you understand the magnitude of this?
Sonic; I do, otherwise I wouldn't ask it. Tails and Amy have been my friends since we were kids, how can I abandon them now? Tell me where it is and I swear we won't come back. We'll run and you'll never see us again.
This upsets Chris. He shakes his head angrily and glances off to the side.
Chris; I don't want you to leave.
Sonic; Then please help me save my friends.
Chris; The base is called Fort Warren. It's just outside of Station Square near Lake Richardson.
Sonic gently takes Cream off his chest and gets up off the couch.
Sonic; (Grinning) Thanks buddy, I'll owe ya a double favor after this.
Chris; I'll look after her while you’re gone.
Cream; Be careful Sonic.
Sonic; No worries. Be a good girl for Chris, I'll be back in a few.
He smiles confidently at her and races out the back door, jumping over the Thorndyke fence.

Deserted island, Day

In the rubble of the tower Dr. Eggman struggles to salvage equipment, his aids Orbot and Cubot assisting the best they can.
The base ruins, now located on a deserted island, sit overlooking the sea, white sand burns in the afternoon sun.
On a rock near the shore Shadow stands looking out into the ocean, arms crossed in concentration.
The Dr. glances over at him and grumbles.
Eggman; Why aren't you helping?
Shadow; I'm not your slave.
Eggman; You are my creation.
Shadow; I am, in fact, your grandfather's creation.
Eggman; You miserable android....
Shadow turns, stepping off the rock and walks over to where the others work pulling tech from the tower's corpse.
He bends down to eye level with the scientist.
Shadow; Grandfather did not pass down his intelligence I see. Gerald Robotnik would have destroyed that Hedgehog long ago.
Eggman; You--
Shadow grabs him by the collar and his eyes flash red.
Shadow; You gave me your word we would be equals. Now treat me as such, or I'll end your life here and now.
Powerless to do anything beyond sneer, Eggman nods. Shadow pushes him away.
Shadow; How long until we go in search of Sonic?
Eggman; A day at least. I need time to rebuild the Egg carrier.
Shadow; Good. I'm itching to explore this new world.
The black Hedgehog goes back to his rock and resumes his position.
The scene fades.
