Chapter Text

Xie Lian sat under the pavilion by the lotus pond while he read, the morning sun keeping him pleasantly warm. It had become one of his favourite areas around the manor, when he couldn’t be with his two mates, or simply when he felt like getting some fresh air.

He heard the sound of running on wooden floorboards and raised his head to see Ban Yue sprinting towards him with a basket, with San Lang not far behind. His eyes widened.

“Your highness! Save my chestnuts!!” Ban Yue cried.

Ban Yue! Don’t go running to Xie Lian for everything!” San Lang shouted, “And those are for dinner!”

“But I wanted to share them with his highness!!” she wailed.

Xie Lian’s hand twitched. He wanted a snack, but not if they were meant for dinner.

Ban Yue skidded to a halt and dropped down behind Xie Lian, using him as a shield from her father.

San Lang came to a stop and threw his hands up in the air. “Oh, whatever! It’s not like we can’t get more.”

Ban Yue grinned and settled down next to Xie Lian with the basket, uncovering the contents to reveal a bowl of chestnuts and some biscuits.

“Are you going to join us, San Lang?” Xie Lian asked, setting his reading materials aside.

“Of course.” San Lang smiled, taking a seat across from him.

Xie Lian was eyeing the chestnuts and biscuits, his hand itching to grab one, but he didn’t want to be rude. During his time at Paradise Manor, San Lang hadn’t observed this sort of behaviour in Xie Lian before, so it was rather intriguing.

“You can eat, my love.” San Lang smiled with amusement.

Xie Lian jumped, startled. “What? Oh.”

He picked up a chestnut and popped it in his mouth, chewing slowly.

Ban Yue was nibbling on a biscuit. “What do you think of the chestnuts? Are they good?” she asked.

He nodded, swallowing. “Did you really take the ones meant for tonight’s dinner?”

She looked sheepish. “Maybe?”

Xie Lian smiled with amusement, “Somehow, I get the feeling this happens more often than not.”

Ban Yue scoffed, waving her hand. “No,”

“Yes.” San Lang narrowed his eyes at her.

“Daddy.”

Ban Yue.”

Xie Lian put another chestnut in his mouth.

“Okay, okay, I’ll make dinner tonight.” Ban Yue sighed in defeat.

San Lang smiled smugly. “Very good. And you’ll replace those chestnuts.”

“I know.” She mumbled, shoving the rest of her biscuit in her mouth.

San Lang glanced at Xie Lian, who was onto eating his fifth chestnut, holding onto a sixth, rolling it between his fingers.

“You seem to be enjoying those chestnuts, your highness.” San Lang chuckled.

“They’re nice and sweet.” Xie Lian replied, “I like them.”

San Lang hummed.

“These chestnuts are the best.” Ban Yue sighed in bliss as she popped one in her own mouth.

“You think all chestnuts are to die for. They could be rotting and you would eat them.” San Lang snorted, reaching for one.

Xie Lian slapped his hand, then looked at him with a startled expression. San Lang raised his brow, looking more amused than anything else.

“I’m sorry! I don’t know what came over me!” Xie Lian apologised.

Ban Yue blinked, trying to process what just happened.

“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it.” San Lang assured him as he pulled away, no chestnut in hand.

Xie Lian looked deeply troubled by his sudden behaviour, to the point where San Lang reached forward and scented him.

“Ah…”

“Don’t think about it.” San Lang said, squeezing his hand. “It’s nothing to stress over.”

Because it wasn’t. It was a little confusing-and kind of funny-but nothing to worry over.

“Ah, here you are.”

Xie Lian glanced over at the sound of Hua Cheng approaching and smiled. Hua Cheng threw San Lang a questioning glance, to which the twin shook his head with a warning. Hua Cheng raised his brow with amusement.

“Oh my goodness-speak out loud! His highness can’t use communication arrays!!” Ban Yue chastised her two fathers.

“It’s okay-I don’t mind. Besides, they might want to discuss something in private.” Xie Lian said.

Ban Yue groaned. “Your Highness, you are far too good to these two.”

Hua Cheng made his way over to where Xie Lian was sitting and sat behind him, winding his arms around his waist.

“She’s right.” He said, then kissed Xie Lian’s cheek.

“Oh-I forgot to mention.” Ban Yue suddenly piped up, “The city residents are throwing a festival tonight to welcome his highness. Word spread about him being your fated mate.”

“Of course they’re throwing a festival.” Hua Cheng muttered.

“Nosy bastards.” San Lang added.

“Can we go?” Xie Lian asked.

“If you’d like to go, then of course we can.” Hua Cheng smiled, watching Xie Lian’s hand twitch.

“Gege?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you want another chestnut?” he asked.

Ban Yue handed over the bowl of chestnuts, deciding she didn’t want to relive the incident earlier, and watched as Xie Lian ate them happily.

“Will you come with us, Ban Yue?” Xie Lian asked, referring to the festival.

Ban Yue shook her head quickly, “Uh-uh, there’s no way I’m intruding on your date.”

San Lang narrowed his eyes. “You already have plans with Pei Xiu.”

Ban Yue diverted her eyes elsewhere, looking rather guilty.

“You better come home tonight, you understand?” Hua Cheng warned.

“Oh my lord-FATHER!” she shrieked, face red at the implication.

Xie Lian ate another chestnut.

“I’m serious Ban Yue. You need to be home on time.” Hua Cheng pressed.

“Okay, I get it.” She mumbled, stuffing another biscuit into her mouth.

When Xie Lian reached for another chestnut, he was disappointed to find that there was nothing there, and looked down to find the bowl empty. The corner of his mouth twitched, but he made no fuss as he placed the bowl to the side.

“Did you want anything else, your highness? I could have the servants bring you something else, if you’re still hungry. Or perhaps something to drink?” Hua Cheng suggested.

Xie Lian hummed in thought. “Some tea sounds nice. And maybe something else to eat.”

“It will be here soon.” Hua Cheng replied.

“Your highness, if you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?” Ban Yue suddenly asked.

Xie Lian laughed. “I just turned 25.”

“Oh? How long ago??” she asked, curious.

“About two months ago.” He replied, then a sour look appeared on his face, his scent tinged with agitation.

“Gege?” Hua Cheng murmured, concerned.

“It’s nothing, just…an unpleasant memory.”

“Did something happen on your birthday?” San Lang dared to ask.

Xie Lian grimaced. “Court isn’t always pleasant. I had a run in with an… Alpha prince… who I have been turning down since childhood. His new hobby is slandering me.”

Hua Cheng’s gaze turned dark.

San Lang looked like he wanted to murder someone for a moment, his eyes flashing red, but then his face softened. “You won’t have to deal with that kind of thing anymore.”

Xie Lian’s eyes widened.

“We won’t let them.” Live, that is.

Ban Yue stood up and stretched. “I better go to the human realm, I suppose. I’ll be back later with the ingredients for dinner.”

“Make sure to take your guards.” Hua Cheng called after her, as she was already making her way towards the manor. “Ban Yue!”

“I know!!” she yelled back.

Xie Lian giggled. “You truly worry about her, don’t you?”

“She is my daughter, even if we aren’t related by blood.” Hua Cheng smiled.

“Of course. Blood doesn’t matter when it comes to family.” Xie Lian agreed. “Although, my father would say otherwise.”

Servants approached with a pot of tea and some snacks for Xie Lian. They placed them next to him and then promptly left.

“Your father wouldn’t know the meaning of the word family even if it hit him.” San Lang muttered as he moved to pour Xie Lian a cup of tea.

Xie Lian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“Do you…still…” Xie Lian didn’t know how to ask the question.

“Gege?”

“What’s on your mind, your highness?” San Lang asked.

Xie Lian gnawed at his lip. He was agitated, as he turned the cup around in his hand, wondering how he should even ask the question. They might not even want to raise another child.

“Would you want…more kids in the future…?” He finally managed to get out, although it was awkward.

Both San Lang and Hua Cheng looked surprised for a moment, then schooled their expressions.

“Yes, that is something I would like-especially with you.” Hua Cheng said softly.

“I am the same,” San Lang added, “Do you want children, your highness?”

Xie Lian nodded. “For as long as I can remember.”

“Then, we can think about it in the future.” Hua Cheng nuzzled his neck, and Xie Lian relaxed contentedly in his hold whilst he drank his tea.

San Lang smiled, glad that the prince finally seemed to be a bit more settled now compared to earlier, and he relaxed, looking out over the pond.

With the king away from the palace to oversee some matters in a nearby town, the queen decided it was a good opportunity to go and search for the contract-and anything else her husband might be hiding from her.

Their relationship had always been strained. They may have been fated mates, but even so, they often never agreed on matters to do with Xie Lian.

Marching down the corridor with purpose, she kept her head held high as she passed servants on her way to her husbands office. She pushed open the door, closing it behind herself, and then walked over to his desk. Knowing her husband, he would probably keep the contract somewhere close, so she started going through his drawers, taking out the documents and briefly looking through them.

Nothing in the first drawer.

Or the second.

But the third… had a box.

“Hmph.” She looked at the lock, discovering it was a combination lock, and rolled her eyes as she put in their anniversary date.

It popped open.

“Sentimental fool.”

She peered inside and found a few documents, furrowing her brow. She read each and every one of them, including the contract that was now null and void, and finally pieced together some of her husbands intentions-though she was even more enraged than before.

She took the documents, but closed the empty box and placed it back in the draw and closed it. Then, hiding the documents in her sleeve, she left the office and headed back to her wing.

Xie Lian looked around at the vibrant city that was lit up with lanterns strung across the streets, with market stalls all set up, along with festival games and performances.

Hua Cheng had his arm wrapped firmly around Xie Lian’s waist in an almost possessive manner, while San Lang walked on his other side, holding his hand with their fingers entwined.

“It’s so lively,” Xie Lian smiled as he watched everyone around them.

“Is there anything in particular that catches your eye?” Hua Cheng asked with a smile.

Xie Lian hummed, looking back and forth. He wasn’t sure.

“It’s their majesties!” Someone called out from within the crowd, “And they’ve come with their mate!”

Suddenly, they were surrounded by citizens all bearing gifts for the prince, overwhelming him.

“Tsk.” Hua Cheng called forth a few servants to take the gifts from Xie Lian as he received them in abundance.

Xie Lian tried to thank everyone, but it was almost impossible-there were too many and they were being shoved at him from every angle.

“Get back to your own business, now.” San Lang growled, and the crowd instantly dispersed.

“I’ll make sure they leave you alone when you’re out with Ban Yue next.” Hua Cheng added.

“It’s okay-they mean well. They’re just…excited.”

San Lang made a noise of indignation, but said nothing as they continued on.

They stopped at a few stalls, mostly just to watch what was going on. But what caught Xie Lian’s eye the most was probably the performances; Xie Lian found the performances of the dances to be beautiful-the dancers moved in strange and unnatural ways, and he could only assume that the dances being performed were native to the demon realm.

“Do these dances originate here, in your realm?” He asked the two kings beside him.

Hua Cheng nodded. “These dances are for celebrations, typically. I don’t remember when they originated.”

Xie Lian’s eyes widened. “How long have you been ruling for?”

“…A while.” San Lang replied cryptically.

“Oh.”

Hua Cheng smiled.

They stayed until the performance was over, then moved on to the next attraction. Xie Lian spotted Ban Yue watching another group of performers with a young alpha male, and San Lang spotted them too.

“I’m glad she’s enjoying herself.” Xie Lian smiled.

“Me too.” San Lang agreed.

Walking around for so long had tired Xie Lian out a bit, so they found somewhere to sit down and have something to eat.

“I’ll go get something. You wait here.” San Lang let go of Xie Lian’s hand and headed off, leaving him alone with Hua Cheng, who squeezed his waist gently.

“How do you like the festival so far, gege?”

Xie Lian smiled. “It’s wonderful. Everyone really put a lot of effort into it. They all seem to love you and San Lang a lot, as well.”

“They’re certainly a rambunctious lot.”

The prince laughed.

Hua Cheng rested his cheek on top of Xie Lian’s head while they waited; the prince resisted burrowing into comfort whilst in public, even though his instincts where itching to do just so.

But with resistance came agitation, which seeped out into his scent.

“Don’t resist, gege.”

Xie Lian burrowed into his neck, inhaling his scent, and immediately calmed. He turned his head, though, when he heard San Lang approaching, but didn’t move away from where he was burrowed into Hua Cheng’s side.

“I got some of those buns you seem to like.” San Lang spoke as he sat down beside beside him.

“Thank you, San Lang.” Xie Lian replied gratefully.

“Enjoy.” San Lang smiled as he handed over the bag.

And he did.

While Xie Lian ate, San Lang and Hua Cheng were discussing Ban Yue’s lessons from earlier that day.

“She can probably move on to more advanced spell weaving techniques soon.” San Lang mused, “She catches on to that sort of thing fast.”

Hua Cheng furrowed his brow. “Has she mastered the first?”

“Yes. She just doesn’t use it for conventional means.” San Lang muttered.

Xie Lian looked at him with a confused expression. “What do you mean?”

“It’s how she found those fucking chestnuts today.”

Hua Cheng burst out laughing.

“What’s the spell?” Xie Lian asked.

“The spell she cast today was one that basically let’s the user search for something they’re looking for within the area around them. If something shows up, then you’re in luck.” San Lang explained extremely simply.

“Ah.”

“Do you know much about magic, gege?” Hua Cheng asked.

Xie Lian shook his head. “I’ve read a few scrolls, but I’m afraid I don’t know if they’re even accurate in information.”

“Oh? Curious.”

“Honestly, your library probably has more scrolls on magic than the palace does.” Xie Lian confessed.

“Not surprising.” San Lang mused, “This is the demon realm. Very few humans can use magic-and even then, it’s only ever in strange circumstances.”

“Have you ever met a human who can use magic?” Xie Lian asked.

“Once,” Hua Cheng admitted, “But the power was borrowed. They could only use three spells.”

“Oh.” Xie Lian furrowed his brow.

“As for Ban Yue’s other lesson today-how did that go?” San Lang asked his brother.

“She did quite well. She’s learning to navigate politics quite quickly, as well as when she needs to be diplomatic. She’s growing fast.” Hua Cheng replied.

“That’s good to hear.” San Lang smiled.

Xie Lian finished off his bun, and then they all stood.

“Do you want to continue to look around?” Hua Cheng asked Xie Lian.

Xie Lian was starting to feel tired. It was late, and they had been out for a very long time already.

He shook his head. “I’m quite tired. I think I’d like to head back.”

“Then let’s go.”

Xie Lian woke in the morning feeling irritable and restless, rolling over to seek the comfort of his mates but found none. He opened his eyes, frowning when he found he was alone, a small growl rumbling in his chest.

He sat up and looked around, finding a robe placed at the end of his bed as usual, so he got out of bed and got dressed into the ivory robe with plum blossoms embroidered on the sleeves. He combed his hair, leaving it down, and then left his room in search of someone who could tell him where his mates were.

“Your highness?”

Xie Lian’s head whipped around at the sound of an unfamiliar voice, seeing a young man dressed in black robes. He wore his black hair in a high ponytail, and his face, while handsome, was forgettable.

“Who are you?” Xie Lian asked.

The man bowed. “I am Yin Yu, Your Highness.”

Oh. OH.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Xie Lian smiled, although it was strained. He didn’t mean for it to be, but he was just so agitated and he couldn’t figure out why.

“Is there something I can help you with, Your Highness?” Yin Yu asked.

“Where are San Lang and Hua Cheng?” Xie Lian asked.

“His Majesty San Lang is in the human realm tending to an important matter. His Majesty Hua Cheng is at the gamblers den.” Yin Yu replied.

“Can I see him?” Xie Lian asked.

Yin Yu looked uncertain, but he could tell from the agitation in Xie Lian’s scent that he was probably going to go feral.

“I’ll ask him.”

Xie Lian watched as Yin Yu placed two fingers to his temple in a gesture to contact his boss, then lowered his hand.

“I’ll take you to him. Would you like to eat something first?”

“No.”

Yin Yu nodded, making note to bring something for the prince later. They set off, leaving the manor and heading into the city. People greeted him as he passed and he responded in kind, until they came upon a rather large building. It was beautiful, in its own way, with it’s traditional architecture and blood red colour scheme.

Inside it was loud and lively, with bets being placed and people shouting when they lost, sometimes begging for mercy.

It was obvious it was no ordinary gambling den.

“What’s the currency used?” Xie Lian asked as he followed Yin Yu down the stairs.

There was a distinct smell of blood in the air.

“We don’t use any kind of currency here.” Yin Yu explained.

Xie Lian made a noise of confusion, until he heard a round of bets go off.

“I’ll bet my firstborn daughter-she’s a beauty!” Came the voice of a man standing at the end of a table.

“I have no need for such things.” Hua Cheng replied. “And that wouldn’t be a major loss to you, now, would it?”

“…my farmland.” The man gritted out.

“Oh?”

Xie Lian realised Hua Cheng was sitting behind the sheer red curtain; he could just make out his silhouette, and he was sitting on what almost appeared to be a throne.

“Very well. Play.”

The croupier explained the rules. Rolling high was a win, while rolling low was a loss.

And unfortunately for the farmer, he rolled low. He was dragged kicking and screaming from the scene, while Xie Lian stood there feeling only a little sorry for the guy.

Now that that was out of the way, Yin Yu continued to lead him up to the front, everyone staring and whispering among themselves.

Hua Cheng stood from where he sat and walked up to the curtains, his hand parting them, and he held it out for Xie Lian to take.

Xie Lian felt his heart race as he took his hand and was led behind the curtains.

What he found was not a throne, but an extremely ornate divan that could be easily lounged on. There was a table, though it was clear for the moment.

Hua Cheng lead him to sit down with him, his gaze searching his expression. Though instead of sitting beside him, Xie Lian chose to climb onto his lap instead.

Hua Cheng raised his brow in surprise, smiling at Xie Lian as he reached up to tuck a stray piece of hair behind his ear.

“Yin Yu said you seemed agitated,” Hua Cheng murmured, “Is something wrong?”

“I just needed to see you and San Lang.” Xie Lian replied.

“Ah.” Hua Cheng smiled, “I’m afraid it’s just me for now. Is that okay?”

Xie Lian nodded. Of course that was okay-it would be better if they were both with him, but he couldn’t fault them for having an entire realm to rule over and duties to tend to. He knew he was being entirely selfish-more irritable than he usually would be-and he felt a bit guilty about that.

“Thank you for letting me see you. I know you’re busy.” Xie Lian added.

“You’re welcome to come here to find us whenever you’d like.” Hua Cheng assured him, and that seemed to put him at ease.

“Can I visit the demon realm whenever I want, as well?” Xie Lian asked.

“Naturally.” Hua Cheng stroked his cheek, his thumb brushing over his bottom lip.

Xie Lian’s eyes shifted to his lips, which curved up into a knowing smile. When Xie Lian lifted his eyes back up to meet Hua Cheng’s again, he had unknowingly leant in, their faces mere centimetres apart.

Hua Cheng was the one to close the gap between them, in the end. Xie Lian sighed into the kiss, allowing the alpha to take the lead. As he parted his lips, Hua Cheng took the initiative to deepen the kiss, exploring his warm cavern with his tongue.

Xie Lian clutched the fabric of Hua Cheng’s robes tightly in his fists, until Hua Cheng took one of his hands in his own and threaded their fingers together, while his other hand ended up tangled in Xie Lian’s hair.

When they parted for air, Xie Lian’s lips were pink and swollen, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he tried to catch his breath.

“As much as I’d love to keep kissing you, gege, you should eat.” Hua Cheng smiled with amusement and adoration.

Xie Lian snapped out of his stupor and turned his head to the table that now had an assortment of food on it.

“You haven’t eaten, right?”

“No, I haven’t.” He confirmed with a red face.

“Have as much as you like.”

Not daring to think about who came in while he and Hua Cheng were kissing to place the food on the table, Xie Lian served himself a bowl and began eating.

He was a bit surprised when Ban Yue appeared from somewhere off to the side.

“Father, I finished going through those reports you gave me.” She spoke.

“Good. Let me have a look.” Hua Cheng held his hand out for the papers she was carrying, taking the small pile she had, and flicked open to the back page of the first one to read what she had written as a proposal.

Xie Lian watched him do that for a while, until he stopped.

“What made you decide to spare the man instead of having him held accountable for his debt?” Hua Cheng asked.

“I felt he could be useful to use later.” She explained. “If he betrays us, I’ll kill him.”

“As you should.” Hua Cheng replied, “I’ll entrust him to you, Ban Yue.”

“Thank you, Father.”

“Everything you’ve proposed here is good.” Hua Cheng said as he finished reading through everything, “I could add a few things, though, but I’ll go over that with you later. You’re doing well.”

Ban Yue lit up at the praise. “Thank you, Father!”

“Are you hungry?”

“Starving.” Ban Yue complained.

“Then join us.”

“Thank you!” Ban Yue then proceeded to fill a bowl with her choice of dishes, and sat down on the divan to eat.

“Your highness, did you enjoy the festival?” She asked between a mouthful of food.

Xie Lian nodded. “It was beautiful. Everyone really put a lot of time and effort into it. I think the performances were my favourite.”

Ban Yue beamed. “I’m so glad to hear that! The dancers were beautiful, weren’t they? If only my own dance lessons were as fruitful.”

Hua Cheng chuckled and Ban Yue glared at him.

“Hm?” Xie Lian looked baffled.

“She’s terrible, gege.” Hua Cheng replied.

“Father!” Ban Yue whined.

“I’m not very good either.” Xie Lian confessed, “I can do a variety of sword dances, but dancing in general is not my strong point, I’m afraid.”

“You’re just saying that to make me feel better.” Ban Yue complained.

Xie Lian looked confused, but Hua Cheng cut in before he could ask.

“Ban Yue, he can’t hide his scent the way we can.”

Ban Yue’s eyes widened for a moment as realisation settled in. “Oh.”

“I was never taught how to hide my scent, just my emotions.” Xie Lian confessed. “Which is…”

“Rough.” Ban Yue finished, understanding.

“As for why I’m terrible at dancing-I may have ignored my lessons in favour of practicing sword forms or martial arts.” Xie Lian confessed, scratching his cheek.

Hua Cheng laughed and so did Ban Yue.

Then, Hua Cheng turned his attention back to what was happening behind the curtain for a moment and hummed. As Xie Lian placed his empty bowl and utensils on the table, he couldn’t help but wonder what was happening.

There was shouting, something about a human entering the premises. It was not unheard of, but it was extremely rare.

“My, my.” Hua Cheng mused, “This is a rare sight indeed.”

Xie Lian looked at him with confusion, as if he wasn’t a human sitting on his lap. But then, Hua Cheng followed it up with:

“A human with both Angel and Demon blood running through your veins. What have you come here for?”

“I’ve heard you offer sanctuary to fallen angels who pledge their allegiance. Will you offer it to someone who has part demon blood in their veins?” came the voice of the man beyond the veil.

“If you turn on my people, I won’t hesitate to kill you. Demon or no.” Hua Cheng warned. “But I can offer you asylum. What are you willing to offer up?”

“My blood.” They responded.

There was silence as Hua Cheng thought it over. Ban Yue watched her father as she chewed her chopsticks, awaiting the verdict.

“Very well. Play.”

Ban Yue went back to finishing her meal. She had a feeling she knew how this would end, and smiled a little.

“Oh, I lost.” Hua Cheng shrugged.

Ban Yue tried to suppress a snicker behind her hand.

“Appropriate accommodation will be made for you within the city.” Hua Cheng added.

“Thank you, your majesty.”

Xie Lian furrowed his brow and looked at Hua Cheng, who gave him a rather innocent smile.

“Don’t be fooled, Your Highness. Father can manipulate luck to his advantage.” Ban Yue explained in a low voice.

Xie Lian raised his brow. “Really?”

“It’s true.” Hua Cheng admitted.

“Interesting.”

“Your highness, may I do your hair?” Ban Yue asked, “Daddy usually does it, but if it’s okay…?”

Xie Lian smiled. “Of course.”

Excited, Ban Yue hopped to her feet. “I came prepared!”

She pulled a comb out of her sleeve, and gently began combing through his long hair, humming softly to herself as she did so. It was very soothing, despite where they were, and Hua Cheng watched with a loving gaze.

Ban Yue had opted for a somewhat elaborate braided half up-do, consisting of about three different braids of different thicknesses.

“All done.” She smiled.

“Thank you, Ban Yue.” Xie Lian smiled.

“Thank you for indulging me.” She replied, “I better be going now. See you both later.”

Hua Cheng nodded, “Have fun.”

She smiled, “I will.”

As she bounded off, Xie Lian looked at Hua Cheng, his hand reaching up to finger the bead in his hair.

“Where is she headed?” He asked, leaning his head against his shoulder.

“To meet with her mate.” Hua Cheng replied. “I’m worried about her getting hurt. I don’t trust her partner. He already left her once-he could do it again.”

Xie Lian smiled softly. “But he’s here now, and Ban Yue is clearing things up with him. At least try to get to know him?”

Hua Cheng looked pained. “You’re right. Ban Yue’s feelings come first in this matter.”

Being a parent was rough.

“You seem quite tired.” Hua Cheng observed.

“Mm.” Xie Lian was very comfortable where he was, resting against the demon king.

Hua Cheng smiled. “Sleep.”

San Lang had returned in the late afternoon, finally having finished his work in the human realm. He was more than a little pissed off at having to be dragged out of bed and away from his mate so early in the morning for such nuisances, which he just wiped out in the end for trying his patience-or lack thereof. Then, he had to clean up the mess the idiots made of the human town, ensure their safety, as well as assuring them that no, he was not there to wipe out their stupid little town-he just wanted to go back home, so could he get on with his fucking job?

He stopped in his tracks when Yin Yu appeared in front of him, looking rather perplexed.

“If you tell me that another demon has rampaged another fucking human village-

“No, it’s not that.” Yin Yu swallowed. “It’s His Highness.”

“What?” San Lang thought he was about to stop breathing. Was he hurt?

“It’s better if you see for yourself. He’s in his room.” Yin Yu replied.

San Lang made his way quickly through the halls towards Xie Lian’s room, where he heard loud banging noises and growls coming from inside.

He frowned. “Xie Lian? I’m coming in.”

San Lang opened the door, finding the room to be a chaotic mess. Clothes everywhere, a chair thrown to the side, and amongst it all, Xie Lian on the floor looking absolutely miserable.

Carefully, San Lang made his way over to him and crouched down next to him.

“Xie Lian? What’s wrong?”

“It’s not right.” Xie Lian’s voice was small. Broken.

“What’s not right? Talk to me.” San Lang was starting to become more worried.

“The nest. It’s not right, San Lang.” he cried.

Oh. Oh.

San Lang gathered Xie Lian up in his arms and pulled him into his lap, cradling him against his chest.

“What do you need?” San Lang asked, “Pillows? Blankets?”

Xie Lian nodded.

“I’ll contact Hua Cheng.”

While he did that, he wasn’t paying attention to how restless Xie Lian was in his arms, until he felt teeth sink into his bare shoulder.

Xie Lian sobbed, confused as to why he had just bitten his mate, but San Lang hushed him gently.

“It’s normal behaviour for when you go into pre-heat with your mate. It’s okay-it doesn’t hurt.” He assured him, rubbing soothing circles on his back.

Xie Lian couldn’t help but let his instincts take over in that moment as he bit him again-a possessive trait unique to omegas during heat.

San Lang glanced at the door when he heard a knock.

“It’s me. I’m coming in.” Hua Cheng called out before opening the door.

San Lang watched as his twin took in the state of the room, understanding the situation immediately. He was carrying an assortment of pillows and blankets that Xie Lian might like, all covered in their scent.

“I’ll just put these over here. Feel free to use whatever you want, gege.”

Xie Lian unlatched himself from his third bite, his lips smeared with blood, which San Lang wiped away with his thumb. He ran his fingers over the bleeding bite marks sadly.

“I’ll be fine.” San Lang assured him again. “Go make your nest.”

“Are you sure?” he asked quietly.

“Of course.” San Lang gave him a chaste kiss before letting him go.

Xie Lian stood, still looking rather guilty, but he was drawn towards the bedding Hua Cheng had brought in and driven by the need to build the nest. San Lang looked entirely unbothered, watching him as he looked through the blankets and pillows for ones he particularly liked, and set to work.

He spent about an hour working at a steady pace, slowing to a stop as he looked over his work, feeling satisfied. All the right scents and textures were there, this time.

Xie Lian turned to look at his two mates for approval. San Lang stood and walked over with a smile, while Hua Cheng came to stand next to him.

“It looks great, gege.”

“Very cosy. It’s lovely.”

Xie Lian smiled, feeling proud. He had never shown his nest to an alpha before, let alone built one while they were both in a room, but he didn’t want them to leave-their presence was comforting. Reassuring. It set him at ease.

“Gege, do you want a bath? Or do you want to rest in your nest?” Hua Cheng asked.

“…Will you both come with me?” Xie Lian asked, referring to the bath.

“If that’s what you want.” San Lang smiled.

Xie Lian nodded. He could use a bath.

San Lang took his hand and led him to the bathroom, with Hua Cheng following behind. While San Lang checked the water temperature and found some appropriate scented oils to add, Hua Cheng took the liberty of undressing Xie Lian layer by layer.

“How are you feeling, gege?” Hua Cheng asked as he folded the next layer, before moving on to untying the final layers.

“Warm. Tired.” Xie Lian replied.

“No pain?” Hua Cheng finished untying the robe and slipped it off his shoulders, leaving them bare.

“Not yet.” He said, “I…shouldn’t be in heat yet.”

“It’s likely a reaction to me and San Lang. You’re our mate, and we’re both powerful alphas. It’s probably sped along your cycle a bit.” Hua Cheng explained gently as he removed his pants.

“I see.” Xie Lian relaxed visibly.

“The water is ready.” San Lang spoke.

“Ah, thank you, San Lang.” Xie Lian replied gratefully, a blush dusting his cheeks as he stood fully bare in front of his mates.

“Get in the water first and we’ll join you in a moment.” Hua Cheng added.

He nodded, and made his way over to the pool while his two mates undressed themselves. The water was the perfect temperature, making him sigh in bliss as he entered, sitting down near the edge.

A few moments later, he felt San Lang’s hands in his hair, unraveling the elaborate braided hairdo Ban Yue had done earlier that day. He could feel his body heat next to him from the edge of the bathing pool, and he wanted to turn his head to look at him, but San Lang was still in the midst of unraveling his braids.

“Ban Yue had a field day with your hair today.” San Lang murmured as he worked swiftly.

“You could tell it was Ban Yue?” he asked incredulously.

“I’ve seen her do this hairstyle before.” San Lang explained.

“Oh?”

“On me, gege.” Hua Cheng chuckled as he stepped into the water.

“Oh! Of course.” That made sense.

San Lang let the final few strands fall through his fingers, then slid into the water beside him.

“Can I help you wash your hair, gege?” Hua Cheng asked.

“I’d like that.” Xie Lian admitted sheepishly.

Hua Cheng grabbed some soap and San Lang poured water over the prince’s head, wetting his hair, so that the demon king could wash it thoroughly. Hua Cheng made sure all of Xie Lian’s hair was clean, giving his scalp a good massage in the process, and San Lang washed away the soap suds by pouring water over his head once more.

“That feels good…” Xie Lian murmured, enjoying the treatment from his mates.

“I’m glad.” Hua Cheng smiled.

San Lang cleaned the excess blood off of his shoulder, leaving just the bites, then glanced over at Xie Lian.

“Are you finished?” he asked softly.

Xie Lian nodded tiredly, just wanting to rest now that he was clean, but his body felt weak and heavy.

Standing, the twins helped Xie Lian out, dried him off and combed the tangles out of his hair, using spiritual power to dry his hair, and when they were dry themselves, headed back out into the bedroom.

Not even bothering with clothes, Xie Lian climbed into his nest and burrowed into comfort. He looked up, though, when his two mates didn’t immediately join him.

They both stood at the edge, either side of the bed.

“May we enter your nest?” they both asked.

“Always.” Xie Lian replied.

Careful not to disturb the nest, they both climbed in to lie down beside him, pulling the blankets up over their bodies.

Xie Lian was facing Hua Cheng and gravitated towards him and his scent, finding comfort in it in his preheat state as he did with San Lang earlier.

He nuzzled his neck, his mind hazy with hormones and instinct as he moved slightly and bit into his shoulder.

Hua Cheng chuckled. “I didn’t know gege was so possessive.”

Xie Lian growled and bit him again, as if to say “You’re mine, everyone else can fuck right off.”

Hua Cheng didn’t mind, though.

“How are you feeling, Xie Lian?” San Lang asked, checking in.

Xie Lian pulled away from where he had bitten Hua Cheng a second time, blood smeared over his mouth, which Hua Cheng cleaned away with his thumb.

“Still really tired. My body feels heavy and hot.”

San Lang checked his fever, finding it was only just developing. “Sleep. We’ll be here when you wake, my love.”

Xie Lian hummed contentedly, and soon his breathing evened out-a sign that he was in a deep sleep. San Lang decided to take the opportunity to take a nap as well, exhausted from his work that morning. Hua Cheng wasn’t tired, but he didn’t mind the extra rest. It was probably going to be a long night, after all.

Xie Lian woke a few hours later covered in sweat and his stomach twisting in cramps. His floral scent was more intoxicating now that he had entered straight into heat, his temperature high and slick running down his thighs. He whimpered in pain, causing both of his mates to stir beside him.

“Gege?” Hua Cheng reached out to check his fever, then rubbed his wrist over the scent glands on Xie Lian’s neck while San Lang worked on his wrists.

Xie Lian sighed in bliss as his body took in the alphas’ scents, the cramps lessening briefly.

“You both smell good…” he murmured, nuzzling Hua Cheng’s neck.

“Hmm? Gege smells good too. It’s my favourite scent.”

“I agree. No field of flowers can compare.” San Lang added.

Xie Lian smiled against his skin. Hearing that made him pleased.

“Is there anything you need?” San Lang then asked.

“I need both of you.”

Well.

“Are you sure? We don’t want you to regret anything.” Hua Cheng spoke, clearly trying to hold back.

“Just because I’m in heat, doesn’t mean I’m not lucid. I know exactly what I want and what I’m asking for.” Xie Lian replied.

San Lang chuckled. “Of course. We just thought we’d make sure it was what you wanted.”

They had explored quite a few things already in the past week or so, but they had yet to explore intercourse together.

Hua Cheng sighed into Xie Lian’s skin. “The things you say and do to me…”

Xie Lian pulled back from where his face was buried in his neck so that he could see his mates face, caressing his right cheek in a loving manner as he ran his thumb across the bottom of his eyepatch.

San Lang was curious if his brother would allow him to remove it-he never took it off around Xie Lian, after all.

Or maybe Hua Cheng was just messing with their mate, and would only take it off once he asked. He had no idea. His brother was just as chaotic as he was.

“What…happened to your eye?” Xie Lian asked hesitantly.

Hua Cheng smiled as he leant into his caresses. “Nothing. I wear this for a different reason.”

Xie Lian’s eyes widened for a moment. Then he looked conflicted.

“Are you curious?” Hua Cheng asked, and Xie Lian nodded.

“It might be scary.”

“No part of you or San Lang could scare me.” Xie Lian said with conviction.

San Lang chuckled. With a small smile, Hua Cheng reached up behind his head and undid the knot keeping the strings of his eyepatch secure around his head, and took it off, setting it aside.

He blinked his eyes open, unused to the light after keeping the patch on for so long, revealing a scarlet iris. Xie Lian was mesmerised by the colour, and the longer he looked, the more he noticed more shades of red swirling around in the iris, like a pool of red water.

Before he even registered what he was doing, he leant forward and placed a kiss on the corner of his eye. Hua Cheng looked briefly surprised, but the expression was quickly replaced by love as he moved to capture his lips with his own. Their kiss was slow, laced with desire but there was no rush. Xie Lian parted his lips in an open invitation for Hua Cheng, who immediately deepened the kiss, sliding their tongues together in a slippery dance. While he was lost in the kiss, Xie Lian could feel San Lang running his hands over his skin, making him shiver and goosebumps rise on his skin. He moaned.

Hua Cheng pushed him onto his back, parting from their kiss in favour of kissing down his neck, leaving blooming purple marks as he went. He stopped at his chest, lifting his eyes up to meet Xie Lian’s as he took one of his hardened nipples in his mouth, teasing it gently with his teeth and soothing the sting with his tongue. He teased the other with his hand, rolling and pinching the sensitive bud between his fingers, relishing in the breathy moans coming from the prince’s mouth.

Xie Lian threaded his fingers through Hua Cheng’s dark hair, wanting him closer-needing him closer-and it seemed like Hua Cheng understood that as he started to pepper kisses further down his body, stopping occasionally to leave a love bite before continuing. Once his face was level with his hardened member, Hua Cheng took it in his hand and ran his thumb over the tip before sliding his hand down, earning another moan. Then, he proceeded to wrap his mouth around the tip of his cock, swirling his tongue over the slit before taking him fully into his mouth. Xie Lian struggled not to thrust his hips, his body and mind driven by heat and primal need.

Hua Cheng pulled back, lifting his heavy lidded gaze up to meet Xie Lian’s. “Don’t hold back, beloved.”

Then, he took him in his mouth once again, all the way to the base and then back to the tip, bobbing his head, feeling Xie Lian’s body trembling beneath him as he edged closer to orgasm. He took him all the way to the back of his throat as Xie Lian let out a silent scream, coming down the back of his throat. Hua Cheng swallowed all of it before pulling back, giving Xie Lian a few moments to come down from his high while he arranged himself between his legs.

Xie Lian blushed when he realised Hua Cheng was situated between his thighs, his fingers rubbing soothing circles on his heated skin. Hua Cheng smiled devilishly. “I’m afraid you’ll have to allow me to indulge myself a little, gege.”

Xie Lian reached out for him, wanting to be embraced, and Hua Cheng obliged. “If that is what you wish, then I’ll indulge you.”

“That could be dangerous.” San Lang chuckled from where he was laying.

“Don’t listen to him gege, he’s just sour because he has to wait his turn.” Hua Cheng murmured.

“Go suck an egg.”

“Gege tastes better, though.”

Xie Lian turned bright red.

Hua Cheng kissed Xie Lian, lingering over his lips for a moment before pulling away. Eyes locked, Hua Cheng slid his hand up Xie Lian’s thigh, his fingers tracing teasing patterns over his skin until he reached the soft mounds of flesh.

“Relax, beloved.”

All the tension in his body melted away at Hua Cheng’s words. Xie Lian might be in heat, but he was still nervous, and both of his mates understood that well.

Hua Cheng parted his cheeks and slid his fingers along the crevice, gathering the fluid that had been leaking from the tiny hole, and was still coming. Fingers coated in slick, he slid one finger easily into the tight cavern. Xie Lian wiggled his hips, as if wanting more inside but dared not to ask.

“Hmm? You seem to be a bit impatient.” Hua Cheng smiled.

“I need you inside.” Xie Lian gasped as Hua Cheng added a second finger, stroking his walls and feeling around until he hooked his fingers, finding the bundle of nerves that sent jolts of pleasure straight up Xie Lian’s spine and into his gut.

“Soon, beloved.”

Xie Lian moaned his name. Hua Cheng continued to tease the bundle of nerves until his mate was a writhing, moaning mess beneath him, begging him.

“Please,” Xie Lian begged with tears at the corners of his eyes.

“Please what?” Hua Cheng asked.

“You know what!” Xie Lian complained, but moaned halfway through as Hua Cheng teased his prostate.

“You’ll have to be a bit more specific, beloved, or I won’t know what you want.” Hua Cheng smiled with a devilish glint.

“Please! Fuck me-breed me! I need you inside me-please, alpha!” Xie Lian begged, almost sobbing.

Hua Cheng removed his fingers and he positioned himself at his entrance, using some of the slick to lubricate himself. “Tell me if it hurts, or you need to stop.” Hua Cheng said.

Xie Lian nodded.

Hua Cheng gently pushed inside his tight cavern, entry made easy by the amount of slick Xie Lian’s body had produced. Xie Lian moaned when he felt Hua Cheng was buried deep inside him and allowed his body time to adjust to the intrusion.

After a moment of absolutely no movement, Xie Lian wiggled his hips for some kind of friction, but Hua Cheng held him down. Xie Lian was about to protest as he felt his mate pull out to just the tip, but before any words could leave his mouth, Hua Cheng’s hips snapped back to his with startling speed and precision, hitting that bundle of nerves deep inside him. He aimed for the same spot with each thrust, making Xie Lian moan loudly as he clutched him closer to his body. Xie Lian wrapped his legs around Hua Cheng’s hips and lifted his hips to meet Hua Cheng’s with each thrust.

“Fuck,” Hua Cheng cursed under his breath.

Hua Cheng buried his face in Xie Lian’s neck, both their breathing ragged. Xie Lian turned his head to catch his lips-it was clumsy, but it worked somehow. Hua Cheng shifted so he could kiss him properly, which ended up being sloppy, open mouthed kisses.

“I-I’m close-“ Xie Lian gasped between one of their kisses.

“Fuck. Me too.” Hua Cheng replied breathily, kissing his neck.

Hua Cheng reached between them and curled his long fingers around Xie Lian’s once again hardened member, stroking it in time with his thrusts. The tension in Xie Lian’s stomach was building up into a crescendo, winding tighter until it finally burst and he spurted white come all over his stomach and Hua Cheng’s hand, screaming his name.

Hua Cheng fucked him through his orgasm, his thrusts growing more erratic the closer he got to his own release. Before he could pull out, Xie Lian locked him in with his legs wrapped tightly around his hips and a death glare.

“Inside.”

Hua Cheng swore. It was enough to make him come undone as he came inside Xie Lian, not daring to knot him in case he fell pregnant. Xie Lian moaned in bliss at the feeling of being filled.

Hua Cheng gave a few more stilted thrusts before coming to a complete stop and pulling out. Xie Lian whined at the loss but Hua Cheng kissed him softly to help soothe him, stroking his cheek in a loving manner. Xie Lian kissed him back as he came down from his high, his mind clearing slowly.

“How are you feeling?” Hua Cheng asked as he parted.

“Good. Tired.” Xie Lian murmured sleepily.

Hua Cheng chuckled. San Lang passed over a piece of damp cloth that he seemed to have gone to get while they were busy; Hua Cheng took it and cleaned off Xie Lian’s abdomen and himself. Then, he climbed off of Xie Lian to lay beside him.

Xie Lian shifted onto his side so that his back was pressing against Hua Cheng’s chest and reached out for San Lang, who happily slid into his arms.

“San Lang, you’re…” Xie Lian trailed off, feeling guilty as he felt his mates arousal against his thigh.

“Don’t feel guilty. Just enjoy yourself.” San Lang murmured as he kissed the corner of his mouth.

“But what about you?” Xie Lian frowned.

San Lang smiled, “If you really want to do something about it, I won’t stop you, but I’m not going to fuck you just yet.”

His vulgar words sent a small shiver down Xie Lian’s spine. There were other ways he could pleasure his mate, as he had learned over the last week and a half. He wrapped his slender fingers around the base of his weeping cock, San Lang’s breath coming out in a shudder as his eyes fluttered closed.

Xie Lian ran his hand down, twisting his wrist and rubbing his thumb over the slit before sliding his hand back down the shaft and repeating the motions again, alternating pressure.

“Fuck, Xie Lian.” San Lang cursed, a few strands of his hair sticking to the light sheen of sweat coating his skin.

Xie Lian used his free hand to bring his face closer and kissed him fervently; San Lang wasted no time deepening the kiss, devouring his mouth hungrily as he thrust his hips into Xie Lian’s hand until he spilled his seed with a low groan.

San Lang continued to kiss him for a bit, nibbling on his lower lip, then parted, his eyes heavy lidded and swirling red with love and desire and devotion.

It was mesmerising to watch.

“Get some sleep, my love.” San Lang murmured, placing a chaste kiss to his forehead.

Finally, Xie Lian succumbed to slumber, resting his body for the next heat wave, the twins following soon after.

When the next wave arrived, Xie Lian woke to the familiar feeling of his mates scenting him against his neck and wrists, his fever having spiked again and the heat more intense. He didn’t know how long he had slept for, but judging from the candles having been lit around the room and the silver butterflies for extra effect, it must be dark outside.

San Lang’s hands wandered over his hypersensitive skin, his nails lightly grazing the skin. Xie Lian gripped his shoulders tightly as he gasped.

San Lang took the opportunity and closed the gap between them, kissing him hungrily as he threaded his fingers through the hairs at the base of Xie Lian’s neck.

San Lang parted in favour of placing a bruising kiss against his neck, trailing further kisses down until he reached his collar bone and bit down, making Xie Lian elicit a breathy moan in response.

The hand that wasn’t tangled in his hair traced down over his spine at a torturously slow pace, grazing his skin with his nails as he went. San Lang gripped his ass, giving it a firm squeeze before pulling away entirely.

Xie Lian looked up at him with confusion, once again seeing his eyes swirling red with desire. San Lang smiled down at him. “Get on your hands and knees.”

Xie Lian complied, though he was a bit wobbly. San Lang gripped his hips gently, rubbing his thumbs over the skin, before gathering some of the slick running down Xie Lian’s thighs and lubricating himself. Xie Lian shivered, then felt the first press of the head of his member against his entrance, easily entering him with a smooth thrust.

Xie Lian’s arms gave way beneath him and he collapsed, still on his knees but being supported by San Lang.

“Are you alright?” San Lang asked as he ran his hands up and down his sides.

“Y-yes,” Xie Lian barely managed to reply.

San Lang leant forward so that his chest was touching Xie Lian’s back, placing soft kisses along his shoulder. Then, he took his earlobe between his teeth, nibbling lightly.

“That’s good.”

Then, he let go. Xie Lian felt him pull out almost all the way before slamming back in, making Xie Lian cry out in pleasure. He continued to fuck him without mercy, knowing by now that Xie Lian enjoyed a bit of rough treatment in bed-he had picked up on it over the last week and a half that they had been exploring sexual intimacy, after all.

Tears pooled at the corners of Xie Lian’s eyes as he was overwhelmed with pleasure pain, but it wasn’t enough. He needed his mate closer-to feel skin on skin contact.

As if sensing his desire, San Lang pressed his chest against his back, entwining their hands together as he continued his unrelenting pace.

“S-San Lang,” Xie Lian moaned his name, unable to speak any other coherent words in the moment.

“Come for me, my love.” San Lang gave a particularly hard thrust, making Xie Lian scream his name.

White come spurted out onto the sheets beneath him while stars danced behind his eyes. San Lang continued to fuck him through his orgasm, following not long after.

After a few stilted thrusts, he came to a stop and leant forward to place a few kisses to Xie Lian’s shoulders and back before nuzzling against his neck.

“You should eat something, and have a bath.” He murmured, kissing his neck.

Xie Lian was exhausted and wanted to sleep but he knew San Lang was right.

“Okay.”

He ended up bathing first. All three of them needed a bath, and they would probably need another one later. Xie Lian’s heat would last for a few days, at least.

They cleaned the sweat and body fluids off, then wrapped themselves in light sleeping robes so that they were at least somewhat decent. Hua Cheng opened the door to find the tray with their meals as he had asked and picked it up, closed the door, and walked back over to the nest where Xie Lian and San Lang were.

The next few days carried on much the same. No one dared to interrupt them, and Xie Lian could only guess that was because the two kings had ordered they be left completely alone. Threats were possibly involved too. Xie Lian was more concerned about whether or not Ban Yue had been scarred for life, though.

As the twins helped Xie Lian get dressed, Hua Cheng clicked his tongue, making Xie Lian raise his brow.

“Sorry gege. There’s an unwanted pest here that I need to go deal with. You and San Lang can come out when you’re ready.” He sighed apologetically.

Xie Lian smiled and gently caressed his cheek.

“It’s alright.”

Hua Cheng scrunched up his nose. “It’s not. It’s taking time away from my beloved, and that’s a crime.”

Xie Lian smiled and shook his head before leaning up and kissing him. “Hurry up then.”

Hua Cheng turned and left the room, leaving Xie Lian with San Lang.

“Come sit.” San Lang gestured to the stool in front of the vanity, and Xie Lian complied.

“How was the herbal bath this morning?” San Lang asked.

“It was nice. It helped with the fatigue and with my muscles.” Xie Lian replied with a smile, enjoying having his hair combed by San Lang.

“I’m glad it helped.” He said as he detangled some strands.

Xie Lian smiled to himself, simply enjoying the feeling of having San Lang do his hair.

“Where did you learn to do this?” Xie Lian asked after a while.

“Hm? Having a daughter makes you learn all sorts of new skills.” San Lang replied with a smile. “I don’t let anyone else do her hair, unless I trust them.”

That made Xie Lian smile with amusement. He could feel his hair being braided, but couldn’t see what San Lang was doing, so he’d have to wait.

San Lang wrapped the first braid around his head, almost like a crown, and pinned it into place, repeating the process with the other smaller braids, weaving them in a pattern. He decorated the prince’s hair with gold accessories that chimed when he moved his head.

“All done.” San Lang smiled as he leant over his shoulder.

Xie Lian turned his head so that their faces were close, allowing San Lang to close the distance in a sweet kiss.

He parted when he heard Ban Yue’s footsteps pelting down the hallway at top speed, skidding to a halt outside.

“DADDY! It’s urgent! Father is arguing with some moron human from the palace in the receiving room! Send help!!”

San Lang snorted and straightened. “Well now. Someone from the palace? It could only be one of your attendants, if not both.”

Xie Lian furrowed his brow in confusion.

“Shall we go see what they have to say?” San Lang asked softly.

Xie Lian nodded and stood, walking with San Lang over to the door and opening it to see a frantic looking Ban Yue. Her eyes lit up upon seeing the pair.

“Your hair looks beautiful today, your highness.” She smiled.

“Thank you.” Xie Lian blushed, while San Lang looked rather smug.

Ban Yue gasped. “There’s no time! Hurry up!”

“Yes, yes. Lead the way, daughter of mine.” San Lang muttered as he followed her down the hallway with Xie Lian at his side.

Along the way, their hands curled together; San Lang squeezed comfortingly, providing silent support in the moment before they approached. Sure enough, there was the scent of two irate alpha’s-neither of which were Hua Cheng.

Xie Lian sighed heavily, while San Lang looked visibly pissed. He wrapped his arm around Xie Lian, as if wanting to shield him from the pheromones, and calmly opened the door.

Ban Yue hurried inside and up to Hua Cheng’s side, ignoring their uninvited guests, while San Lang and Xie Lian calmly made their way up to the top of the stairs where the black jaded divan was and sat down with them.

When Xie Lian lifted his eyes to meet his attendants, he saw shock and disgust.

“Your highness-“ Feng Xin started.

“You didn’t.” Mu Qing’s face was contorted, “It’s not proper!”

“What I do during or outside my heat cycle with my mates is strictly between myself, San Lang and Hua Cheng. I don’t need counsel from either of you on the matter, thank you.” Xie Lian replied calmly, but his tone said not to argue on the matter.

But, his two attendants were stubborn (or stupid) and argued anyway.

“Your highness, you were in heat! You hardly knew what you were doing!” Feng Xin argued.

Xie Lian could feel both of his mates bristling beside him at the implication that Xie Lian couldn’t make his own decisions, but Xie Lian was furious for a different reason entirely.

“Feng Xin, do you realise the implication of your words?” Xie Lian asked sharply. “I can assure you, I’m quite lucid during my heats and I can relay all of the dirty details if you so desire. Do not ever imply that San Lang or Hua Cheng took advantage of me ever again or I will dismiss you from my service.” He hissed.

Ban Yue hid her laugh behind her long purple sleeve, trying not to make a sound, but it was comical how uneducated these two men were.

“Perhaps it’s time you educated yourself properly on omega heat cycles.” Hua Cheng drawled.

“Asshole.” Feng Xin muttered.

“I could have sworn I told the queen to reign you two in.” San Lang mused, narrowing his eyes.

“Why are you here?” Xie Lian demanded, fed up. His heat had only just ended and he was exhausted.

Hua Cheng wrapped his arm around Xie Lian’s waist, giving it a gentle squeeze before kissing his temple, letting out calming pheromones.

Feng Xin and Mu Qing both tried to ignore the public display of affection and returned to their task at hand.

“It’s Lang Ying. He’s made demands.” Mu Qing spoke. “If you aren’t delivered to him by sunset tomorrow, he’ll attack XianLe. Your father wants you to come home now to… prepare.”

“For the wedding, you mean.” Xie Lian smiled ruefully.

“Yes.”

San Lang leapt from his seat, his hands curling around both of the attendants throats as he slammed them into the wall, eyes red with fury. “And where the fuck is Xie Lian’s agency in this?!”

“He’s the Crown Prince and an omega. He doesn’t get to choose.” Mu Qing gritted out.

Xie Lian flinched. He never thought he’d hear his supposed friends say that. Well, apparently that’s all he was to them after all.

An object to be traded.

“Give me one good reason not to crush your throat here and now.” San Lang growled.

“San Lang, leave them be.” Xie Lian said quietly.

San Lang’s grip faltered briefly, but then tightened again as he tossed them halfway across the room before walking back to Xie Lian’s side.

Xie Lian wasn’t even looking at his two attendants anymore, too hurt and broken by the words they had spoken. He swallowed his emotions and lifted his eyes once more, showing his resolve.

“Go back to the palace and tell my father the three of us will be there to meet with him tomorrow morning. That’s an order.” Xie Lian ordered.

“But-“

“Are you deaf? Get on with it.” Hua Cheng waved his hand and sent them on their merry way, kicking them both out of the demon realm.

“Good Lord. Can we eat breakfast now? I’m starving.” Ban Yue complained.

“That…would be good.” Xie Lian agreed, already exhausted.

“Then let’s go.” San Lang spoke softly.

Xie Lian was relieved the whole confrontation was over. It was exhausting-draining-and words spoken had been heartbreaking to hear. He wasn’t an object to be used as a bargaining chip-he was a person with feelings.

“Xie Lian.” Hua Cheng called his name, catching him by surprise.

Xie Lian looked up, eyes wide as Hua Cheng took his face in both of his hands.

“Your feelings will always come first. Ignore what those two said.”

“Thank you,” Xie Lian said softly, “Both of you.”

….

….

The next morning was calm, despite the incoming storm. Xie Lian dressed in a set of white robes with red trim, a somewhat obvious statement by his mates that made him feel giddy inside.

San Lang finished his hair, pinning it up with the matching silver butterfly hair pin that both twins were sporting that day, and stepped back.

Xie Lian smiled. “Thank you, San Lang.”

San Lang kissed the top of his head. “Of course.”

Xie Lian turned to face him, fidgeting nervously. San Lang removed a small box from his sleeve, opening it to reveal a pair of silver and gold earrings with crystal plum blossoms hanging from them.

“For you.”

“San Lang, did you make these?” Xie Lian asked, awed by the fine craftsmanship.

“I did,” he replied, a bit shy.

“They’re stunning. May I wear them?”

San Lang smiled, “Please do.”

Xie Lian picked up the delicate pieces of jewellery and put them in his ears, smiling up at San Lang when he was done.

“Beautiful.” San Lang smiled.

Hua Cheng walked into the room with Ban Yue, who gasped.

“The earrings! You made them!” she exclaimed.

“Of course I did.” San Lang scoffed.

“When did you find time?” Hua Cheng frowned.  “I haven’t seen you part from his side unless absolutely necessary.”

Ban Yue’s jaw dropped. “That’s what you’ve been doing during my lessons!”

“Bit slow noticing, love.” San Lang sighed.

Ban Yue glared at him briefly before smiling at Xie Lian. “They look great on you, your highness.

“Thank you, Ban Yue.” Xie Lian replied, returning her smile. “Thank you for letting me get to know you while I was here in the demon realm. I had a really nice time.”

“I was really happy I got to meet you. Promise you’ll visit again, won’t you?” Ban Yue looked hopeful.

“Of course. I’d really love that.”

Hua Cheng turned to Ban Yue, “I’ve left orders that you’re to rule in our stead while we’re gone for the next few days. Contact us should anything arise.”

“I understand. I’ll do my best.” Ban Yue spoke with conviction.

Hua Cheng smiled and placed a gentle hand on her head, before turning to Xie Lian and San Lang.

“Are you ready to go?” he asked softly.

“As ready as I can be, I suppose.” Xie Lian grimaced.

“It’s okay to be scared. Confronting your parents isn’t easy.”

“We’ll be right there with you.” San Lang added.

Xie Lian released a shaky sigh and nodded, standing up. It was time to end this farce for good.

They arrived just outside the gates of the Palace of XianLe, giving the guards quite the fright upon seeing the three materialise from amidst a flurry of silver butterflies. Xie Lian walked straight past them with both twins either side, heading up the palace steps and through the doors. A servant immediately came to greet them, bowing low.

“The king and queen will receive you in the throne room, your majesties, your highness.”

Hua Cheng hummed. “Hmm? Oh good, we can cut straight to the chase, then.”

“Thank you. We can head there on our own.” Xie Lian replied.

The servant bowed once more, recognising they had been dismissed, and left in a hurry.

Holding his head high, Xie Lian walked through the palace halls, ignoring the stares he got from the palace staff and other nobles, likely wondering why he was in the company of the twin demon kings of all people.

Xie Lian stopped at the large doors to the throne room, waiting to be announced. The doors opened for him, granting the three of them entry.

When Xie Lian came to a stop in front of his parents, he gave a polite bow, however neither of the demon kings beside him moved.

“Your majesties, I have returned.” Xie Lian spoke.

“Welcome home, my son. You look well.” The queen smiled warmly. “Thank you both for taking such good care of him.”

“Of course, your majesty. It was our pleasure.” Hua Cheng replied with a polite smile.

“Xie Lian.” The king’s voice cut through the air, winding up the tension like a vice. “You were ordered to return to get ready for a wedding. Not return with two demons.” He spat.

“With all due respect, father, these two men beside me are royalty and should be treated as such. They also happen to be my mates.” Xie Lian said, “You and the council also decided that I had a month to find my fated mate, and I’ve found them-but the reason you thought you could get away with that is because you thought I wouldn’t be able to find them.”

The king’s eyebrow twitched. “What nonsense are you talking about?”

San Lang laughed. “You’re dumber than I thought.”

“Really, dear, don’t pretend to hide it.” The queen sighed, covering her face with one hand.

“Why did you break the contract?” Xie Lian demanded. “Do you know what you’ve done?”

“You wouldn’t understand.” The king growled.

“Then help me to.”

“You were better off in Yong’An, than being stuck in a war between the demon realm and heaven.” The king answered.

“How dare you.” San Lang hissed. “You don’t get to make that decision.”

“That’s my choice to make, father.”

“You are the Crown Prince and an Omega. You don’t get to make these choices!” The king repeated.

San Lang’s eyes swirled red with fury. Hua Cheng chuckled.

“That’s cute, considering you’re talking to the two most powerful demons who can completely annihilate you on the spot. Or did you forget that we were the reason that your borders were safe from harm-from demons, humans and heaven alike?”

Xie Lian was certain there was more his father was hiding, or maybe his father just hated demons that much that he refused the idea of him being fated to the twins.

“We’re willing to overlook the fact that you thought we were stupid enough not to notice you had broken the contract. We can help with your situation with Yong’An, but it requires a new contract. Our trust is broken, however, so I’m afraid our conditions will be much different.” Hua Cheng explained. “The only reason we have shown any kind of mercy to you, is because you are Xie Lian’s father.”

“I’m sure our forces can-“

“Don’t kid yourself.” San Lang laughed bitterly. “Yong’An has a much larger army. They will squash you.”

The king looked visibly annoyed at having been cut off. “And how do you know this?”

“We keep intelligence on everything, and have since before you were born.”

The queen placed her hand very firmly over the king’s. “This has to stop. Let our son be happy. You know he’ll be miserable with that alpha in Yong’An. All you are doing is pushing your son away.”

The king let out a resigned sigh. “What do I have to do?”

Hua Cheng smiled. “Shall we talk somewhere a bit more private?”

The contract had been written up, tying the security of XianLe to the two demon kings once again. As expected, Xie Lian wasn’t to be marked until his 26th birthday, however Hua Cheng and San Lang were allowed to stay by his side as much as they pleased.

Xie Lian stood in the palace courtyard to see the twins off while they dealt with Yong’An.

“Did you get all of the answers you wanted?” San Lang asked.

Xie Lian shook his head. “Father is still hiding something, and there are some questions I might never get answers to.” He replied.

Hua Cheng lifted his head by his chin. “I told you-you will get your answers. I promise you. It might not be now, but it will happen.”

Xie Lian smiled, “Thank you, Hua Cheng.”

Hua Cheng leant forward and gave him a chaste kiss before stepping away.

San Lang kissed Xie Lian on the cheek before joining his brother.

“We’ll be back soon, gege.”

“Stay safe, you two.”

Then, they were gone.

Feeling more lonely than he had in weeks, Xie Lian headed back inside the palace, headed for his room. Outside his room, though, dutifully waited Mu Qing and Feng Xin. Feeling angry, he made his way forwards.

They spotted him, but noticed his mood and didn’t say anything, not certain what to make of it. Xie Lian opened his bedroom door and walked inside, and when his attendants moved to follow, he stopped them.

“Do not come in. I don’t want to see you, or talk to you right now.”

Then, he closed his door in their faces before they could respond.

Lang Ying sat idly in his throne, awaiting the news to arrive that the Crown Prince of XianLe had finally arrived. He was bored, and he was looking forward to seeing his bride.

He heard a flurry of wings, but thought he might have imagined it, until he saw several silver butterflies in the room.

“Oh. So you’re the king of Yong’An?”

Lang Ying jumped at the sound of the unfamiliar voice next to his ear, turning to see the younger of the demon king twins assessing him.

“San Lang, don’t play with your prey.” Hua Cheng laughed from behind the throne.

“Who the hell are you?” Lang Ying demanded.

“Your death sentence.” San Lang grinned, his eyes flashing red.

“W-wait…”

San Lang unsheathed his sabre, and with one smooth swing of the blade, decapitated the man’s head.

“What a boring job. Wiping out an army and killing a king is too easy these days.” San Lang sighed.

“Weren’t you bitching about having to clean up after demons the other day?” Hua Cheng asked.

“Oh fuck off.”

“I’m just saying, be careful what you wish for. You might bite off more than you can chew.”

“Bring it on.” San Lang grinned.

“Idiot.” Hua Cheng sighed fondly. “Let’s go home, to our mate.”

“Yes, let’s.”

Home, to where Xie Lian was waiting for them.
