Chapter Text

Today is the day, the one day that both Tim and Lucy wanted to put off forever. The day of Grey's funeral. As the morning gets started Tim is finishing up the words that are to be spoken at Grey's service. Lucy is cooking them a small breakfast, something to hold them over til mid-afternoon. They've both have delte with death, Tim more than Lucy. He has lost men overseas during his time in the Army and on the force. A year ago his monster of a father had finally passed. Luckily, Lucy had been there to help him and Genny, through the planning and execution of the procession. No matter how much Tim hated the man, he still lost his father. Laura, their mother, came into town for the service.

“Hey babe,” Lucy broke Tim out of his mind.

“Yeah?” Tim responds, placing his pen next to the piece of paper.

“We’ll need to start getting ready soon,” Lucy hesitated.

“Okay,” Tim agreed. He moves off the stool and heads into the bedroom. Since he and Lucy moved into her apartment, there's been an ease, “Hey babe?”

“Yeah?” Lucy said as she walked into the room.

“Where is our class a’s?” Tim is looking in the closet.

“They are in the back, with everything we might need,” Lucy expressed, Tim starts to move her dress out of the way to reveal two dust bags, and above it are their hatboxes, and below are their shoes.  Tim gathers everything and places it on the bed.

“I’m going to hop through the shower, you are more than welcome to join me,” Tim spoke.

“ I will, once I finish cleaning up the kitchen,” Lucy agrees.

“Okay I’m going to go shave,” Tim leaned down and kissed her cheek. He walks off into the bathroom as Lucy goes into the kitchen.

Once they got out of the shower, both of them dressed. The last time that they wore their class uniform was for Jackson. Tim puts a handkerchief in his pocket just in case.

Once they got to the church, they found their seats, they were sitting on the opposite side of Luna and Dominque.  Wesley, Angela, Nyla, James, John, Bailey, and Aaron are sitting in the same pew. The casket is in the center, with an American Flag over it and a Grey’s picture standing next to it. Lucy’s eyes start to well, Tim stiffs his poster.

Luna and Dominique are sitting there. As soon as the church choir starts to hum a hymn, the congregation stands up. Father Lopez walks out in his ceremonial garb.

“Heavenly Father, we come before,” Father Lopez announces, the whole church goes silent, “ You may be seated. You today in sorrowful times honor and remember the lives of all the police officers who have fallen. We thank you for these brave men and women's ultimate sacrifice, which they gave us.” Wesley instinctively grabs Angela’s gloved hand, “ Let’s bow our heads,” James grabs Nyla’s hand, Father God, we come before you now and lift our fallen comrade in uniform who gave his life so valiantly for us. He paid the ultimate price in his service and dedication to protecting us. We are forever grateful for his sacrifice, courage, and valor.”Tim brushes his fingers on Lucy's thighs. John clap’s Bailey’s hand, “Guard over those left behind- the wife whose tears can no longer be contained; the loving family who will grieve every day until they join with him; the child who has lost a hero. We thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for being our Savior from darkness's worst days- whose blood was spilled as a servant carrying a cross in another world more than two millennia ago. May he be glorified always? Amen,” The congregation repeats after him,  “ Now I would Like to invite the Mayor of Los Angeles to say a few words,”

Father Lopez steps aside, as a woman in a black suit walks up to the podium. She clears her throat, as she is speaking Lucy is doing everything in her power to keep the tears in. Wesley takes his focus off of the mayor and looks at his wife, tears are streaming down her face, and he unclasps his hand from Angela’s. Reaches into the pocket of his suit and grabs a handkerchief, then hands it to her. Angela daps the tears and claps their hand. After the Mayor, the chief of Police walks up to the podium. As soon as she gets there, there is a knot in Tim’s stomach. The next thing that Tim knows is that the Chief of Police walks off. He stands up and takes a folded-up sheet of paper out of his pocket. He walks up to the podium and unfolds the paper and places it on the podium.

“Sergent Wade Grey,” Tim clears his throat, while he looks out at the congregation, “He was an amazing leader, friend, mentor, husband, and father,” His eyes fall to Luna and Dominque, “ Grey was a man of honor, he was loyal. I’ve worked under Grey for the better part of my career, I wouldn’t be half the cop I am if it was for Sergeant Grey,” He looks up from Luna and Dominque and looks to the right pew, “When you become a member of the Mid-Wilshire station, you are part of a family. Grey’s family. He made sure that you learned from your mistakes, and celebrated your wins. To be quite honest, he was the father that I needed,” he looks to a photo of Sergent Grey, “ I know without a doubt he left a legacy,” Tim walks back to the pew and sits down, he folds the paper back up and places the paper pack into his pocket and grabs the handkerchief and hands it to Lucy. Father Lopez stands up and walks over to the podium.

“Oh dear brother, your tour of duty has come to a close,” Father Lopez announces, “ You have done more than could be asked for in service to your brothers-in-arms. Just take a few more steps, and the danger will soon pass, knowing that others are here to help guide you. Your dedication and bravery have not gone unnoticed; you have answered. the call for courage and bravery. Take your deserved place of honor among those who served before you, and know that your memory lives on through ours forever more,”

Father Lopez closes his folder, and the church choir starts the same hymn from before. Tim, Percy, John, Nolan, Dickson, and Smitty all stand-up and head over to the casket. The whole congregation stands up, the pall bears pick up the casket and with the order from Percy West, they carry out the casket. While every official is saluting, Luna and Dominique follow them. Once everyone has exited the church, the pall bears place the casket into the car and slide it in. Everyone goes to the respected cars. The drive over to the cemetery is quiet for everyone.

Once they get to the cemetery the pall bears grab the casket and place it on the thing. Luna, Dominque, and a few of his cousins are sitting in the chairs, and the Mild-Wilshire station officers are behind them. Tim and Lucy stand beside each other, he takes a deep breath and walks over to the end of the casket. He takes out his radio and clicks it.

“Control,7-adam- 200 ... This is the last call for radio call for 7-adam-200. No response from Sgt.Wade Grey, 7-adam-200 is out of service after 25 years of police service. Although you are gone, you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, our friend.” Tim announces on the radio, once he finishes he steps back next to Lucy, and a tear run down his cheek.

Two men who are dressed in formal military attire, are on the left and right sides of the casket. They pick up the flag. They move from over the casket to the backside of the coffin, and start to fold, as they fold the flag. From the distance, the familiar sound of taps begins to play.  Once the men finish folding the flag, the trumpets stop playing. A Farley young man stands in front of Luna with the flag waist high and the straight edge facer her. He leans forward.

“Ma’am, on behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Army, and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service,” the young man exclaimed/.  Luna takes the flag, a tear falls from her eyes.

“Thank you, sir,” Luna responds to the man.

Father Lopez says a couple more words as the casket is getting lowered.
