He wants to figure it out, Eddie realises. It’s been haunting him since it happened two years ago — that chittering, whispering that emanated from the woods. From that first time he heard it, when the crickets were deathly silent, predator-ready, to when he heard the thundering, soldiers of the earth screaming and howling into the trees.
Eddie doesn’t know what he thinks he’s gonna find, but whatever it is, he wants to know. Those whispers hadn’t been back since that rumble beneath the ground — the soldiers — but that steady beat, like a giant mass running closer on the 4th of July? It has to be the same. There’s no way it can’t be connected.
And nobody has mentioned it. Nobody has even hinted at knowing what he’s talking about.
