The battle at the prom had taken a turn for the worse, and Fig did not know how they were going to recover. She was too hurt to even stand; Kristen was unconscious but breathing, up in the rafters, Riz was hiding somewhere and badly hurt, Adaine was (hopefully just) passed out on the gym floor near where Gorgug was barely keeping on his feet, a worrying pool of blood under her, Jawbone checking on her from where the dragon had spit him out. Fabian was trying to draw the dragon's attention, pull Kalvaxus away, but they would need a miracle to not all be dead within the next few moments, some other hero to arrive to save the day.
The gym doors slammed open. The hero of the hour had arrived. Only...
"Gilear, nooo.." Fig whined out as loudly as she could, because she knew he could do nothing to even scratch a dragon and was just condemning himself to die alongside herself and her friends. His eyes looked over to her, then over to the red dragon, even as he strode forward with a confidence she hadn't seen in him even before the divorce.
"Goldenhoard!" He demanded, his voice as stern as it ever got, the high elven accent he had affected her entire life slipping just a little bit as he raised his voice in a demand. It was only ruined slightly by his complete lack of martial ability and the yogurt stains running down the front of his shirt. "You do not wish to do this!"
"And what would you know, Lunch Lad, about what the mighty Kalvaxus wishes to do?" Kalvaxus asked, turning away from Gorgug, who hesitated as though uncertain if he should interrupt since the dragon had stopped attacking.
"I have watched over you, lo these many months since you hired me, and I have seen that you have made a sincere effort to be supportive of the students, to be a good Vice Principal. To be a good person." Gilear said, and now every set of eyes in the gym was on him, even those of the student who was chowing down at the buffet table as though no dragons had appeared.
"A mere cover! I would not have thought you so foolish as to believe it." Kalvaxus replied, the bass of his laughs rattling the gym, the cold stage under Fig vibrating. "Now, I am free, free to do whatever I wish, free of being trapped at this school under the thumb of that lunatic."
"Free, then, to do anything you desire?" Gilear asked.
The dragon seemed taken aback by the very question. "Why yes! That is the whole point of all of this, to be free to acquire things of value, land and servants and money and.."
"..and love?" Gilear interrupted. "For I have seen your heart, and I do not think that this is what you really want. Mayhaps it was, once, but you have grown fond of this place and these students, I think. And I have grown fond of you."
"You.. you have?" Kalvaxus asked, a claw scraping along the ground. "Only, I never really thought.. I mean, you have a daughter. I didn't realize you would be interested. And it's also kind of inappropriate, since I am your boss."
"I do have a daughter, but I am also most interested! And you need not be my boss any longer, for I will resign this job to pursue your heart. And I do not wish to ask too much of you, to keep you from other things you love. I only ask that you find a small portion of your heart for me, and for this place, and together we can go conquer other places. Fallinel, perhaps, or the Baronies. Please do not harm Figueroth, for if it goes as my heart doth desire, then soon she shall be your daughter as well." Gilear said, clasping his hands and holding them against his chest, eyes looking pleadingly up at the red dragon.
"Are you.. just after me for my money, or to stop me from eating your daughter?" Kalvaxus asked, but now he sounded fearful and worried, as though hoping those things were not true.
"I care not for money. I only wish to gain that which I desire to hoard the most, your heart." Gilear said, and the tension in the air grew. Some wordless message seemed to pass between them, Fig could tell, for Gilear started climbing up onto Kalvaxus' back, needing only three tries and a little help from the red dragon twisting in just the right way to make the scales more of a staircase.
"The Baronies ARE nice this time of year." Kalvaxus declared, lashing a claw out and smashing a hole through the roof, starting to dig it wide enough to fly out, rubble raining down; Jawbone dragged Adaine and Gorgug away, and Fig was relieved to see that the elf was breathing after all. Fabian was starting to applaud and cheer, always a romantic.
Fig wasn't sure how to feel about this, but she wasn't up to any kind of applause at the moment anyway.
"Do not wait up for me, my daughter!" Gilear called out, and then they were gone, a comet of red passion flying through the air chasing after the setting sun towards the Baronies.
