Work Text:
Alec eyes widen as his breath catches in his throat. He almost drops the tablet he’s holding, thankful for his quick reflexes that he didn’t have to explain to the clave exactly how he managed to smash it.
On shaky legs he makes his way over to Magnus on the sofa and stiffly sits, unable to bring himself to look at Magnus. His mind is going a hundred miles a minute trying to process what he’d just been asked. He rests his elbows on his knees, interlocking his fingers together and leans forwards, legs bouncing in anxiety.
His logical brain pops into the forefront of his mind, scrutinising each and every pro and con. Weighing them up and coming to a well thought out conclusion so that he can answer Magnus. His mind stalls on many of the cons, each con his brain puzzles out an easy enough solution to them, or they simply don’t hold enough weight over the pro on the other side of his imagined list.
Fear is the biggest con that his mind flags up. So many insecurities and worries fill his mind. But that’s all they are. And Alec is acutely aware of just how much he has grown and developed since meeting Magnus. Of how many fears he had faced and overcome. Magnus being by his side makes everything so much easier. A hand to hold, someone to breathe through the anxiety with. A true partner and equal.
The man who has stayed silent and still since posing such a loaded question, giving Alec all the time he needs to make up his own mind without Magnus influencing his decision. He loves him a little more, however that is possible, for that.
He runs a hand through his hair and rubs the spot on the back of his neck that always soothes him in times of high stress or anxiety. He leans back a little, eyes still cast downward.
And as for the positive, Alec’s lip twitches by itself into a crooked smile. Images flashing before his mind causing a warmth to spread through his body. His heart flutters and he knows that his mind is pretty much made up. He honestly can’t think of one single, valid, unsolvable reason against the idea.
Besides, what is the alternative? Sure it may not have any real effect on Alec. But it would have a huge impact on others, not just Magnus. He uses his periphery vision to study Magnus’ face, turning his head just a little to get a better look. It doesn’t help, Magnus is still wearing a completely unreadable expression, determined not to bias Alec’s decision.
He blindly reaches a hand across and grips Magnus’ hand the second he finds it. Slowly he turns his body and face to meet Magnus. He knows he’s not imagining the hope hidden in warlock's eyes.
Decision made, Alec knows he needs to put Magnus out of his misery. “Yes, I think we should adopt this baby.”
