Work Text:
They had been on their way to the annual Class A reunion party. Most of the young heroes wanted to spend Christmas with their families and the others had to be on watch on the holiday, since most heroes tried to get the day off, so they decided to hold a meeting with their whole class one day before the year ended, on December 30th.
It made sense to everyone and somehow they all always managed to spend the evening on this day together with their old class. (Shinsou suspected that All Might knew about their meetings and talked to everyone’s agencies so they’d get the evening of the 30th off.) They went drinking or to a restaurant, caught up on each other’s lives.
Something always happened at one of these meetings. Two years ago Kirishima had proposed to Kaminari, last year Jiro and Yaoyorozu talked about their plans to adopt a child…
Wondering what would happen this year Shinsou had walked along the snowy streets, his cold hands hidden in his coat pockets, his boyfriend at his side.
And then the “event” of this year had happened. To him.
A body crashed into the shop window next to them. Immediately Iida was in front of him, shielding him from the glass shards. For a short moment Shinsou felt like he was watching the scene from above, he saw himself close his eyes and duck behind his boyfriend, shielding his own face with his arms. Then everything returned to normal. He lowered his arms and took a step forward, the glass crunching beneath his feet.
The person had probably been launched off the rooftops of one of the houses nearby. Were they a villain? A civilian? Did they need to call an ambulance or the police or both? The answers to these questions came quickly.
Two heroes came rushing towards them; Shinsou knew those two from his second and third year in U.A., they were underclassmen of them.
”Senpai!”, one of them – a cat mutation type – greeted, “What a nice surprise to meet you here! What are you up to? We were just about to capture this guy.”
Shinsou smiled at the significant “nya” his kohai added at the end of every sentence. As the cat person he was he had always liked this guy.
His bespectacled partner clicked his tongue. “This is no time for chit chatting, ´Apawcalypse´. Let’s get this over with and hand him over to the police already.”
“He should be unconscious, at least he hasn’t moved until now”, Iida remarked from behind Shinsou, “It should be no problem for you two to capture him.”
“You have the capturing device, Darling”, ‘Apawcalypse’ said with a smirk.
Grumbling something about “It’s ‘Brain’, we said to refer to each other with our hero names on the job”, the other went inside the shop and returned with the unconscious villain on his back.
The police arrived shortly after and took the unconscious villain with them. After Iida and Shinsou convinced the ambulance that arrived with the police that they were alright, the four heroes were left alone again.
”Hey, do you two know how ‘Sunshine’ is doing?”, Shinsou asked the younger heroes, remembering the kohai he had been the closest to in high school.
”She works for a different agency than ours, but she is doing quite well, if you ask me”, ‘Brain’ answered.
”She’s popular!”, ‘Apawcalypse’ butted in, “there are a lot of sunny fan pages!”
Shinsou smiled. He hadn’t been worried about her exactly, but it was nice to hear she was doing well.
“Well, we’ll be on our way then. We have a class meeting to be at”, he said, grabbing Iida’s hand. It felt different from normal, he noticed. Why was that?
His boyfriend had been unusually quiet too.
”A class meeting?”, ‘Apawcalypse’ smiled, ”say hi to Kouda-senpai for me! And my ‘Brain’ over here wants to greet Kaminari-senpai too!”
“Sure”, Shinsou nodded and turned around. While walking away he heard the two of them talking.
“You do realize how you sound when you refer to me as “your brain”, right?”, ‘Brain’ asked.
”I know, but what I’m more concerned about is… why did Iida-senpai ask for ‘Sunshine’?”, ‘Apawcalypse’ whispered back.
Shinsou frowned. He asked for his kohai, didn’t he? What were those two talking about?
He turned to look at his boyfriend, but what he saw wasn’t the face he expected. Instead he looked right into his own eyes.
Shinsou turned the other way to look at his own reflection in the store window next to him. The face he looked at, the hair and the hand touching the glass were incredibly familiar, just not his own. They were his boyfriend’s hair, face and hands.
“What the fuck”, he said, the only reasonable question to ask at this time.
Iida sighed. “It must have been the quirk of that villain.”
Shinsou nodded. That seemed legit. He tried to pinpoint the exact point at which it happened. ”I felt like I was thrown out of my own body and was forced to watch the scene from a third person point of view for a second when he crashed into the window. He probably activated his quirk in a panic and we were the unlucky bystanders”, he said.
Iida looked uncomfortable. Seeing his own face in such distress made Shinsou dizzy. It was a very confusing situation they were in.
”What do we do now?”, his boyfriend asked.
“Maybe it’ll wear off after some time? Let’s just go to the meeting place. We’re late already”, Shinsou answered and started walking again.
When they finally arrived at the restaurant they were meeting up this year, everyone else was already present.
Midoriya and Uraraka came running towards them and attempted to hug him, but he pointed at his boyfriend in his own body and said: ”This is Iida. We met a villain on our way here and our bodies got swapped.”
Silence. Everyone needed a second to come to terms with the fact that their classmates weren’t exactly the same people at the moment, but they seemed to handle the situation with professionalism, nobody made a big fuss. They were pro-heroes after all.
”For real?”, Kaminari then said from behind Midoriya’s back, ”that’s so cool! It’s like in that one movie, you know which one I mean, babe?”
“I know which one you mean”, his husband, Kirishima answered, “but I don’t think it’s that cool for the victims, look at them. They don’t seem happy.”
Shinsou looked over at his boyfriend, who seemed more and more uncomfortable with every passing minute. He himself wasn’t all that bothered by their body swap, it didn’t feel very different than his own body, sure his legs were a little heavier thanks to Iida’s quirk and he was a little taller than normal, but… Wait, was that it?
“Is it your quirk that’s making you so uncomfortable?”, he whispered to his boyfriend.
A small nod. “It feels like I lost a part of me. I am incomplete. I feel so naked, vulnerable. It’s horrifying. And…”, Iida whispered back.
”What?”
“Your quirk. What if I accidentally activate it and brainwash someone into doing something they don’t want to do?”
”That won’t happen, don’t worry. We’ll find a way to undo this before it comes to any of the horror scenarios you’re imagining right now, okay? I promise”, a hand caressed his boyfriend’s hair, like he knew Iida liked it. Even though it was his own, way longer, purple hair instead of Iida’s short, blueish black hair under his fingers, the gesture felt familiar.
“What’re you fucking whispering over there, nerds? Just call your damn old man, he’ll fix it for you”, Bakugou interrupted their moment.
“What does my father have to do with this?”, Shinsou asked, confused.
”What Kacchan is saying”, Midoriya translated hurriedly, “is that you should give Aizawa-sensei a call, so he can erase the villain’s quirk. That should cancel the quirk’s effect.”
“That’s a great idea”, Uraraka said, “You have Sensei’s contact info, right Shinsou? You two were close.”
”We were, but he’s not my father”, Shinsou shot a pointed glare at Bakugou.
“Let’s go inside before calling Sensei”, Todoroki proposed, “it’s cold.”
”Why are you fucking cold, Icy-Hot?”, Katsuki began to argue, but was grabbed and pulled inside by his boyfriends. The rest of the class followed the three of them, only Tsuyu stayed with the two of them, Iida was still looking very uncomfortable. She patted his back encouragingly and went inside then too, leaving the two of them alone.
“You have my phone”, Shinsou said, a smirk forming on his lips. Their situation was so absurd, he just had to smile.
Wordlessly Iida gave him the device.
”Don’t worry too much. I never “accidentally” brainwashed anyone, did I?”, Shinsou said.
”No, you have not”, Iida mumbled, “I still do not know how to feel about this. I am sorry.”
”Don’t worry too much. Look, you’re going to go inside and then I’ll call Sensei, he’ll go erase that guy’s quirk and we’ll be fixed, yes? Now let’s just enjoy our evening. Why don’t you go and tell Kaminari and Kouda about ´Brain´ and ´Apawcalypse´?”
Iida gave a small nod. Then he raised his chin and straightened his shoulders. “Alright!”, he said, his eyes having regained some of their usual sparkle.
”That’s the Tenya I know and love”, Shinsou said and kissed him on his nose. It was a bit weird, kissing his own nose, but since he knew it was his boyfriend it was alright.
Iida went inside to talk to their friends. Shinsou saw him talk to Kouda and the happiness in their classmate’s eyes, as he undoubtedly told the story of how they met ‘Apawcalypse’, someone Kouda had been close with in high-school.
He dialed the familiar number.
”Hello listener!!!”, a voice that was certainly not Aizawa-sensei’s screamed into his ear, ”I picked up Shouta’s private phone first!”
“What are you doing, Mic?”, a sleepy voice said, farther away from the phone.
Shinsou rubbed his neck nervously. Phone calls weren’t his favorite way of communication. ”Hello… Mic-sensei? This is Shinsou Hitoshi, one of the former students of Aizawa-sensei. Can I speak to him for a moment?”
”Sure!”, the pro hero answered, still way too loud for a phone conversation, ”Shouta, Shinsou Hitoshi wants to speak to you!”
Without another word Aizawa Shouta took the phone. ”Shinsou. What is it?”
“Hello Sensei. We have a problem and would like to request your help.”
”It’s my day off.”
”Iida and me got hit by a body swapping quirk and he’s extremely stressed, close to breaking down I’d say. The rest of the class is distracting him at the moment, but we really need you to erase that villain’s quirk.”
A sigh on the other side of the line. Shinsou knew he’d won. Their sensei had always had a soft spot for their class and especially him.
”Where is this villain?”, Aizawa asked over a confused Mic who was asking where his husband was going.
”‘Brain’ and ‘Apawcalypse’ captured him and handed him over to the police. We didn’t notice we’d been swapped until he was gone already.”
Another sigh: “Mic, call your brats. We need to know where the villain they captured went. He body-swapped my brats.”
Shinsou listened to the teacher’s discussion as Mic called ‘Apawcalypse’, as he had been the homeroom teacher of their underclassmen.
“The villain’s at the police station near the ‘Lemillion’ agency”, Present Mic said, “but they aren’t there anymore.”
He sounded a little upset. Maybe he had wanted to meet up with his students.
“No time for that, Mic. We’ll go there as fast as possible, I’ll erase this guy’s goddamn quirk and then I’m going to sleep. It’s my day off.”
“Thank you, Sensei”, Shinsou said relieved.
”I’ll shoot you a text message as soon as I erased his quirk.”
”Say hi to the class for him! He misses you guys!”, Mic screamed in the background, before Aizawa hung up without saying goodbye.
Shinsou smiled. Their teacher hadn’t changed much since he last saw him.
He went inside then, sat down at the table with his friends and boyfriend. Iida had already ordered for him.
“Hey Kaminari, ‘Brain’ says hi!”, Shinsou said.
Kaminari’s face lit up: ”That boy? Is he still with his cat-boyfriend?”
Shinsou nodded: “They work in a team. They’re adorable, really.”
“Well, he learned from the best”, Kaminari said, a smug grin on his face.
”Don’t get cocky, socket”, Bakugou grumbled, “you aren’t the fucking love guru you think you are.”
“Hey!”
While the two of them began to playfully argue (even though he wasn’t so sure about the “playful” part on Bakugou’s behalf) Shinsou remembered what Present Mic had said before Aizawa hung up.
”By the way, Sensei says hi, he misses us”, he said, loud enough so everyone could hear him. His ex-classmates stared at him for a second, baffled.
”There’s no way Sensei actually said this”, Sero said what everyone thought.
“Well, actually Present Mic said that before Sensei hung up”, Shinsou answered, rubbing his neck.
”If his husband says so…”, Mina began the sentence and was interrupted by Hagakure, squealing happily: “…that means Sensei really misses us!”
The former classmates started laughing and many others also smiled about the thought of their teacher missing them. It really was amusing.
All of the sudden Shinsou felt dizzy, only for a moment, but the dizziness had definitely been there. First he thought it was the warmth of the room and all the people around him, but then he realized that he wasn’t looking at himself anymore, but instead at Aoyama, very passionately talking about the new design of his hero costume.
”Wait a second”, he shushed the blonde’s talk about fabric and sequins and how the colors would have a calming effect of civilians he would rescue, and turned around to his boyfriend, who was finally his boyfriend again, ”Hey babe, could you give me my phone, you still have it, I left it-“
He was interrupted by a hug knocking the breath out of his lungs.
Iida was extremely relieved as it seemed, Shinsou thought as he patted the other’s back.
“You’re back to normal?”, Kaminari asked, a little disappointed, “How anticlimactic.”
”What did you expect? Sparkling and rainbows as their angel shaped souls swapped places?”, Jiro deadpanned.
“I don’t know what I expected, but definitely something more than… nothing?”, the blond said.
With a newly straightened back Iida faced Kaminari: ”The procedure was exactly the same as it was when we got swapped in the first place. It makes sense that it is pretty ‘underwhelming’ if you want to call it that, because Shinsou didn’t even notice in the first place.”
”That really makes sense”, Kaminari nodded and with that the subject was almost forgotten.
Shinsou turned to his plate and realized that Iida’s favorite food was standing in front of him. ”We have to swap”, he said with a grin towards his boyfriend who in turn smiled back. They swapped their plates and after that was all done, everyone could finally enjoy their dinner.
After they were all full of food and dessert, Shinsou remembered that he had missed his chance to ask Iida for his phone.
”Can I have my phone now?”, he mumbled, as to not disturb the quiet and calm atmosphere.
”Sure”, his boyfriend responded and gave him his phone. Shinsou checked the text message he had received about two hours ago.
‘Done’, the text said, no punctuation, no emoticons, nothing else. He smiled. Not even their teacher’s texting style had changed.
He showed the message around and gained a few laughs here and there, but everyone was tired, so there was no big fuss made over that message, something Shinsou was glad about. He was tired too, exhausted from today’s events.
Luckily Iida noticed his distress (he himself must have been very tired as well) and asked him if he wanted to go home. Of course he wanted to and so they said goodbye to their classmates and began their way home.
”I can’t believe we were the ones with something special happening to us this year”, Shinsou said as he walked alongside Iida, hands clasped together tightly.
“You wouldn’t think of it unless it happens”, Iida nodded, “but, you know Hitoshi… even though the whole body-swap matter was deeply disturbing for me, losing my engines had a deeper impact on my psyche than I ever thought it would, as well as the responsibility of carrying a quirk that is not mine did, it wasn’t that bad, because it was with you. If I had been swapped with anyone else… I would not have known what to do. I apologize for my uncharacteristic behavior.”
Shinsou squeezed the hand he was holding. “Don’t worry, I understand. I was glad it was you too”, he answered, “I’m thankful you were with me today.”
“I am always thankful when you are with me”, Iida said, a red hue dusting his cheeks.
Shinsou smiled. “I feel the same”, he said, “With you I feel at home. You are ‘home’ to me.”
A dark red dusted Iida’s cheeks now, his embarrassment clearly visible.
”I… me too”, he mumbled into his scarf and squeezed Shinsou’s hand.
Each other’s home, Shinsou thought, that didn’t sound so bad.
